The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.

Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
During trace auditory fear conditioning (tFC) rats learned to fear a previously neutral tone that is followed by shock after a brief interval. The mechanisms underlying the association between a tone and shock, that occur separate in time, remain elusive.
Several studies have implicated the hippocampus in tFC. Due to it role in spatial and episodic memory, one possibility is that this area is necessary because it links events that occur within the same spatial context. Additionally, previous studies demonstrated that tFC requires the mPFC raising the possibility that this association could be achieved by a working memory-like strategy,. However, it is possible that these two structures work in parallel enabling the animal with the capacity to resolve the same problem using two different neuronal strategies. As a prior study showed the hippocampus is involved in the tFC acquisition only when the two stimuli are separated by a longer intervals. It is possible that the involvement of one more than the other would depend on the length of the trace interval.
To test this hypothesis we performed temporary inactivation, using muscimol, of hippocampus and mPFC during training where the interval between tone a shcok was either short, 5s, or long, 40s. After the infusion all the rats where trained with a trace single tone-shock pairing using a 20s tone, followed by a trace interval (5 or 40 s) at the iend of which a 1.5mA shock of 1.5s duration was delivered. In accordance with previous findings we found that hippocampus inactivation impaired the acquisition of tFC, for the 40s but not the 5s trace interval. In contrast, the involvement of the mPFC was independent of the length of the interval as the muscimol infused animals from either 40s or 5s trace interval groups were both impaired in the acquisition of fear to the tone.
In summary, rats can learn the association between a tone and shock that are separate in time, within a single training trial. However the circuit underlying this learning changes according to the size of the interval between the two stimuli.

The latency of conditioned fear after delay and trace conditioning was investigated. Some argue that delay conditioning is not dependent on awareness. In contrast, trace conditioning, where there is a gap between the conditioned stimulus (CS) and the unconditioned stimulus (US), is assumed to be dependent on awareness. In the present study, a tone CS signaled a noise US presented 1000 ms after CS onset in the delay conditioning group. In the trace conditioning group, a 200-ms tone CS was followed by an 800-ms gap prior to US presentation. Fear-potentiated startle should be seen at shorter intervals after delay conditioning compared to trace conditioning. Analyses showed increased startle at 30, 50, 100, and 150 ms after CS onset following delay conditioning compared to trace conditioning. This implies that fear-relevant stimuli elicit physiological reactions before extended processing of the stimuli occur, following delay, but not trace conditioning.

The study included 1,068 community-dwelling individuals (736 women, 332 men) aged 18 to 93 years old (Mage = 56 years, SD = 18) who had educational backgrounds ranging from 0 to 24 years (M = 9.8 years, SD = 5.3). The results showed that sex, age, and education were significantly associated with AVLT performance. These demographic characteristics accounted for 24% to 35% of the variance of direct recall trials and for 8% to 39% of the variance of derived recall scores. The normative data for direct and derived recall scores are presented as regression-based algorithms to adjust for sex, age, and education with subsequent correspondence between adjusted scores and percentile distribution. The norms for the recognition correct score are presented as algorithms to estimate the recognition scores for 5th, 10th, and 18th percentiles for each combination of the variables sex, age, and education.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.

Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

ABSTRACT:
This study investigated the effect of learning information that is to be used in the future on sleep spindle production and on sleep-dependent memory consolidation. Subjects trained on a motor sequence-typing task (MST) and virtual maze task (VMT), and then had a period of sleep or wake before being tested on the two memory tasks again. However, only half of the subjects were informed of the testing and half of the subjects did not expect testing. Subjects in the sleep condition were monitored throughout the night using electroencephalography (EEG) technology to measure number of sleep spindles. The current study found that subjects who expected testing had a significantly greater amount of sleep spindles throughout the night compared to subjects who did not expect testing. However, there was no correlation between sleep spindles and performance improvement on memory tasks. The findings suggest that memories with relevance to the future will be consolidated more during the night, which will lead to an increase in sleep spindle production.
