BACKGROUND:
Music training is a well-established model of brain plasticity. Most studies compare professional musicians with non-musicians or examine effects of individual instrumental training in childhood. Effects of collective music training conducted in regular schools remain poorly understood.
AIM:
To determine near and far transfer effects in behaviour and neural correlates of a relatively short collective Orff-based music training program in school-age children, as compared to an analogous program in sports and to a passive control group.
METHOD
Longitudinal training study with pre-test (T1), training, post-test (T2) and follow-up (T3), in three groups of 8-year-old children: music, basketball and no specific training. Children were matched on major cognitive and demographic variables and pseudorandomly assigned to one of the groups. Behavioral measures on musical and other cognitive abilities, and on brain structural MRI and resting-state fMRI, were collected at T1, T2 and T3.
RESULTS
Learning effects were found for all groups. Specific behavioural benefits driven by music training were mostly near transfer effects in the music domain and fine motor abilities, but far transfer effects in simple arithmetics and phonological decoding were also found. Music training induced plasticity on gray-matter volume of the left cerebellum that related to rhythm discrimination at T1 and correlated with gains in motor performance; it also lead to higher connectivity between the auditory and sensorimotor networks suggesting enhanced audio-motor coordination.
CONCLUSION
A resource-lean music training program was sufficient to induce specific behavioural benefits associated in part with plastic changes in gray matter volume and functional neural connectivity.

Abstract/Results: Most neuroimaging studies of post-stroke recovery rely on analyses derived from standard node-centric functional connectivity to map the distributed effects in stroke patients. Here, given the importance of nonlocal and diffuse damage, we use an edge-centric approach to functional connectivity in order to provide an alternative description of the effects of this disorder. These techniques allow for the rendering of metrics such as normalized entropy, which describes the diversity of edge communities at each node. Moreover, the approach enables the identification of high amplitude co-fluctuations in fMRI time series. We found that normalized entropy is associated with stroke lesion severity and continually increases across the time of patients’ recovery. Furthermore, high amplitude co-fluctuations not only relate to the lesion severity but are also associated with patients’ level of recovery. The current study is the first edge-centric application for a clinical population in a longitudinal dataset and demonstrates how a different perspective for functional data analysis can further characterize topographic modulations of brain dynamics.

ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Research investigating links between paranormal belief and reduced well-being has produced inconsistent findings. The most reliable outcome being an association between superstition and stress vulnerability. Accordingly, this project used a range of analytical techniques to further explore links between paranormal belief and reduced well-being.
AIMS
To identify profiles combining paranormal belief and psychopathological symptoms.
To develop and test models examining how emergent profiles relate to well-being over a sustained period (6 months).
METHOD
This project comprised six studies, using cross sectional and longitudinal methods. These surveyed participants via online self-report measures. Alongside the Revised Paranormal Belief Scale, participants completed a range of cognitive-perceptual, psychopathology-related, and well-being (e.g., Perceived Stress, Somatic Symptoms, Life Satisfaction, Depression Scale, Meaning in Life) measures.
RESULTS
A range of statistical procedures was used: Latent profile analysis, indirect effects, network analysis, longitudinal analysis.
Generally, findings indicated that general paranormal belief in the absence of high scores on cognitive-perceptual (i.e., transliminality) and psychopathology-related factors (i.e., schizotypy and manic-depressive experience) was not associated with lower well-being. Additionally, transliminality was a connecting variable between paranormal belief, positive schizotypy, and psychopathology. However, with regards to perceived stress, Traditional Paranormal Belief predicted higher distress and lower coping.
CONCLUSIONS
Paranormal belief, in the absence of related cognitive-perceptual and psychopathology-related factors, was not detrimental to well-being.

Background:
Currently, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is dependent on the investigative team to manually prescribe, or demarcate, the desired tissue volume-of-interest. The need for a new method to automate precise voxel placements is warranted to improve the utility and interpretability of MRS data.
New method:
We propose and validate robust and real-time methods to automate MRS voxel placement using functionally defined coordinates within the prefrontal cortex. Data were collected and analyzed using two independent prospective studies: 1) two independent imaging days with each consisting of a multi-session sandwich design (MRS data only collected on one of the days determined based on scan time) and 2) a longitudinal design. Participants with fibromyalgia syndrome (N=50) and major depressive disorder (N=35) underwent neuroimaging. MRS acquisitions were acquired at 3-tesla. Evaluation of the reproducibility of spatial location and tissue segmentation was assessed for: 1) manual, 2) semi-automated, and 3) automated voxel prescription approaches RESULTS:
Variability of voxel grey and white matter tissue composition was reduced using automated placement protocols. Spatially, post- to pre-voxel center-of-gravity distance was reduced and voxel overlap increased significantly across datasets using automated compared to manual procedures
COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHODS:
Manual prescription, the current standard in the field, can produce inconsistent data across repeated acquisitions. Using automated voxel placement, we found reduced variability and more consistent voxel placement across multiple acquisitions CONCLUSIONS:
These results demonstrate the within subject reliability and reproducibility of a method for reducing variability introduced by spatial inconsistencies during MRS acquisitions. The proposed method is a meaningful advance toward improved consistency of MRS data in neuroscience and can be utilized for multi-session and longitudinal studies.
