The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This article explores historical and sociological shifts in understandings of healing at the popular Marian pilgrimage site of Lourdes. Using extensive survey and fieldwork data, it moves away from existing pilgrimage studies which concentrate on the sick, contested medico-miraculous narratives and cures, to approach this space as a site for the exploration and negotiation of embodied, communal and holistic aspirations. It contends that modern pilgrims, both female and male, conceive of forms of suffering and the need for healing on a holistic spectrum and use a variety of devotional practices and a ‘therapeutic landscape’ to address physical, emotional and psychological concerns. Using a methodological approach centred on ‘belief’ and ‘lived religion’, it charts a well-observed shift in contemporary spirituality (within and outside religious affiliation), which prioritises self-realisation, connectivity and embodied well-being – a therapeutic spirituality augmented by newer forms of ‘religious thermalism’. As such, it contributes to the ongoing debate in the sociology of religion about the relationship between holistic spirituality, secularisation and ‘traditional’, institutional mainstream religiosity.

BACKGROUND
Lourdes is a Catholic pilgrimage site in France, best known for the occasional miraculous cures of disease which occur there. Our interest is in healing of the whole person, rather than curing of physical disease. We hypothesised that transcendent (noetic) experiences resulting from healing rituals in Lourdes would facilitate healing.
AIMS
We undertook research in Lourdes to ascertain whether pilgrims have transcendent experiences there, what might facilitate these and their effects on individuals.
METHOD
A team of 5 researchers spent 10 days interviewing pilgrims and others, obtaining pictorial representations of peoples’ perceptions of what is happening there, and observing the various rituals and events that take place in Lourdes. We transcribed all interviews and undertook a thematic analysis of the data.
RESULTS
We obtained transcripts from 67 interviews (people aged 15-87, 72% female). ‘Change’ resulting from being in Lourdes was the biggest theme. 26 of them described some out-of-the-ordinary ‘transcendent’ experience whilst in Lourdes. Being alone in the grotto was the commonest stimulus. These experiences were often very intense, leading to feelings of immense joy, peace or love, and a sense of connection with something outside the self. Some respondents described lasting health benefits.
CONCLUSIONS
Being in Lourdes changes people. Transcendent experiences are relatively common in pilgrims visiting Lourdes, and they can lead to improved health and wellbeing, altered meaning, and the healing of symptoms (in the absence of disease cure). Perhaps this is the true ‘miracle’ of Lourdes.

Millions of pilgrims visit Lourdes each year, often seeking revitalisation rather than miraculous cures. We sought to understand the phenomenon of transcendent experiences. We spoke with 67 pilgrims including assisted pilgrims, young volunteers and medical staff. About two in five reported a transcendent experience: some felt they had communicated or had close contact with a divine presence, while others reported a powerful experience of something intangible and otherworldly. Transcendent experiences are an important feature of pilgrimage to Lourdes and the place offers the faithful a means of connecting with the divine, with nature and with the self.

Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This chapter explores healing, rather than curing chronic health problems, at the Marian pilgrimage site of Lourdes in South West France. Significant shifts in contemporary expressions of spirituality, with a focus on self-realization, connectivity and well-being, have led to a new emphasis in scholarship on lived religious experience. Recent studies, in order to separate themselves from the prior medico-miraculous narratives, quite rightly stress a holism of mind, body and spirit. However, in so doing, they have left healing as a generalized concept often synonymous with well-being. Such generalities encourage the naturalized assumption that we all ‘know’ what healing means. Yet careful examination reveals complex nuance: to understand its efficacy healing requires a thorough investigation. To address this, our transdisciplinary, international team, draws on ethnographic observations and 2017 fieldwork data with 67 participants, including recorded in-depth interviews (n=33 people); focus groups (n=10 pairs or groups); and pictorial representations of what people thought was happening to them in Lourdes (n=19 pictures). To analyze this material, we take a methodological approach which is underpinned by phenomenology centred on context, interpretation, and relationship. We identify a nexus of beneficial factors which enable the healing process and couple this with a working definition of healing as a beneficial whole-person interpretive response to and within a context. Through a nuanced examination of our work and exploration of how healing might be understood, we have developed a new model – nourishing exchanges – to consider how the ‘low-tech/high-touch’ environment of Lourdes might provide a new and transferable model for care and holism in a time of chronicity.
