Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Previous research in the field of lucid dreams has produced several techniques which are claimed to be a means of inducing lucid dreams, but there have been only a small number of reported studies which have evaluated their effectiveness. The present study investigated the effects of one of the most promising of these, the reflection-intention technique, which is specifically designed to increase the frequency of dream and lucid dream recall. The sample here consisted of 20 participants whose frequencies of normal dream recall and lucid dream recall were recorded before, during and after a two week training program by using a dream questionnaire and a dream journal: A one-way repeated measures analysis of variance showed a significant increase in both dream recall frequency (F2,38 = 22.09, p<.05) and lucid dream recall frequency (F2,38 = 5.96, p<.05). Because there are some reservations concerning the small sample size and a possible subject bias, the findings here concerning the efficiency of the lucid dream induction program are regarded as only suggestive.

In the last two decades considerable progress in brain imaging techniques have led to increasing interest into the neurobiology of sleep stages and dream contents. However, this fascinating research field poses several methodological challenges. The aim of this article is to discuss these challenges and to suggest novel approaches for probing the neurobiology of dream contents. Most of all, I suggest (i) to overcome the correlative limitations of neuroimaging techniques by applying transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) during different sleep stages in order to provide causal evidence for the role of specific brain regions in different dream contents, (ii) to control for possible perceptual and cognitive biases in dream reports such as hindsight bias, (iii) to combine computer assisted qualitative data analyses of dream reports with quantitative psychometric scales by applying logistic regression analyses and (iv) to consider possible implications for psychotherapy and neuroethics.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The neural mechanisms underlying lucid dreaming have recently been investigated using brain imaging techniques such as electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging, which produce insightful but merely correlative results. We propose that research on the neurophysiology of lucid dreaming, for instance concerning the exact relationship between the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and metacognitive insight into the fact that one is dreaming, should be complemented by methods allowing direct causal interference with neural functioning during sleep. To achieve this aim, several stimulation methods are proposed, i.e. transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial direct current stimulation, and galvanic vestibular stimulation. Given the broad range of cognitive and metacognitive processing in dreams, which support a continuous view of lucid and nonlucid dreaming, we further propose that certain aspects of dream lucidity and its neural mechanisms can be investigated in so-called ordinary, nonlucid dreams. This would allow for phenomenologically more comprehensive and practically more efficient experiments in this field of dream research. Such experiments would also provide a solid ground for understanding self-consciousness in lucid and non-lucid dreams, as well as for integrating dream research into more general neurophilosophical theories of consciousness and the self.

INTRODUCTION:
Although there are some questionnaire studies that have explored the relationship between parapsychological experiences and dissociation, there are few studies involving depersonalization experiences. Purpose: We conducted a survey to determine if there was a relationship between parapsychological and depersonalization experiences
PARTICIPANTS:
The study included 256 residents of Charlottesville, Virginia. 62.5% were female and 37.5% were male. Their mean age was 49.29.
METHOD:
Participants were selected in terms of the proportion of residents in the different postal codes of the city. These persons received questionnaires via the mail. Questionnaire: The questionnaire had items about demographic variables, parapsychological experiences (waking and dream ESP, apparitions, out-of-body experiences, and auras), and dreams (disturbing, lucid, and dream recall frequency), and the Cambridge Depersonalisation Scale (CDS).
RESULTS:
Those participants that reported having parapsychological experiences had higher CDS scores that those that did not have those experiences. An Index of Parapsychological Experiences formed by the number of experiences each person had was significantly and positively correlated with the CDS.
DISCUSSION:
The results show significant and positive relations between parapsychological and depersonalization experiences. This does not necessarily indicate pathology. There are individuals that have depersonalization experiences without having a psychiatric diagnosis.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Objectives: The project had its starting point in the paper in Science 1976, on State Specific Sciences by Charles Tart and the work on shared dreams by Robert Waggoner. Its objective is to document the frequency of lucid and shared dreams and to find ways of producing potentially shared states of consciousness in the laboratory.
Method 1: involved surveys of the student population to establish the frequency of the lucid and shared dreams and select suitable participants.
Results: The major survey found that about 80% of students reported experiencing a least one lucid dream with 24% of them reporting one or more per month. The frequent lucid dreamers were more likely to report more content and communication with dream figures. Shared or mutual dreams were reported by 13% of the respondents and occurred most often amongst those having one or more lucid dreams per month. A survey of students sleep habits indicated that so-called “power naps” are used purposively by 60% of students with 21% of students using them regularly.
Method 2: The use of a special form of stroboscopic stimulation has been reported by Winkler and Proecki to facilitate the occurrence of lucid dream-like states. Volunteers reporting lucid dreams and related experiences were located in separate laboratory and each was given a half hour of stroboscopic stimulation. A randomly selected melody was played to one of the participants during each session. The task for the other participant was to try to successively identify it from a sample of 4 control decoys.
Results: were exactly at chance expectancy. All the hits came from the sessions in which one of the experimenters was a participant.
Method 3: The third study worked with participants selected on a volunteer basis via this survey for their potential at experiencing lucidity during dreaming. Pairs of participants took part in a telepathy type experiment with one of them taking on the role of sender and the other receiver. Both of the participants were encouraged to have ”power naps” during the session, which lasted 45 min. To facilitate the induction of power naps, participants listened to seashore noise supplied to them through earphones. The participant in the role of the sender received at regular intermittent periods the sound from music clips relating to specific environmental scenes. The participants in the role of sender received only seashore noise. REM monitoring masks (the REM Dreamer) were placed over the eyes of both participants located in separate rooms at 30 metres distance. The purpose of the masks was to reduce visual stimulation as well as to facilitate lucidity during any REM periods that might occur. (According to previous research power naps usually contain short REM periods.) The target music clips were randomly selected, 3 - 4 minute extracts from music videos with a positive and visually striking content and exposed only to the sender so as to give the receiver the task afterwards to identify the target film from a set of four films. The film clips were shown to the sender before relaxation and then played at a semi-subliminal level to the sender during the relaxation period.
Results: Most participants reported having ”dreamlets” (short dream-like experiences) but only one reported having a lucid dream during the experiment and this did not relate to the sender’s imagery. The results of this, the power nap study, were close to chance expectancy. There were 5 hits in 17 sessions (Exact binomial P = .43).
Conclusions: None of the techniques seem to work with a wide range of participants. A suggestion for further work would involve modification of the Real Time Digital Ganzfeld using auditory feedback from the lucid dreams of the receiver. We may need also to work with more highly selected individuals in a home environment and, given their frequency in the population, this is feasible.

OBJECTIVES:
The relationship between time in dreams and real time has intrigued scientists for centuries (cf. Schredl, 2000). In a recent study by Erlacher and Schredl (2004) it was shown that the required time to perform a motor task in a lucid dream was significant longer than the required time for the same task in the waking state. In contrast, the time intervals for counting were quite similar in lucid dreams and in wakefulness. In this experiment a simple cognitive task was used to investigate the relationship between the time needed in a lucid dream and the time needed for the same activity performed in the waking state.
METHODS:
Two experiments were conducted whereas in experiment 1 the participant’s task was to count to 10, 20, and 30 and in experiment 2 to walk 10, 20, and 30 steps in their lucid dreams. The lucid dreamers were instructed to mark the events by LRLR: the onset of lucidity, the beginning of each sequence and the end of the lucid dream task. The LRLR are clearly visible in the EOG recording and the interval between two LRLR can be measured. Sleep was recorded by means of standard procedures (EEG, EOG, EMG) by the standard recording device Trex Longtime EEG recorder (XLTEK).
RESULTS:
For the first and second experiment the results showed that the absolute duration of counting or walking in the lucid dream takes more time than for counting or walking during wakefulness. The relative timing, however, revealed for both conditions quite similar percentages for the two conditions (lucid dreaming and wakefulness).
DISCUSSION:
The results showed that in lucid dreams a tendency exists to overestimate durations for simple cognitive and motor tasks, but, that those differences are not visible for the relative timing of the tasks. In general the statistical analysis has to face the problem of testing for equivalence, because the alternative hypothesis predicts a similar result and not a difference (c.f. Wellek, 2003).

Recent studies suggest that lucid dreaming (awareness of dreaming while dreaming) might be associated with increased brain activity over frontal regions during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. By applying transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), we aimed to manipulate the activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during REM sleep to increase dream lucidity. Nineteen participants spent three consecutive nights in a sleep laboratory. On the second and third nights they randomly received either 1 mA tDCS for 10 min or sham stimulation during each REM period starting with the second one. According to the participants’ self-ratings, tDCS over the DLPFC during REM sleep increased lucidity in dreams. The effects, however, were not strong and found only in frequent lucid dreamers. While this indicates some preliminary support for the involvement of the DLPFC in lucid dreaming, further research, controlling for indirect effects of stimulation and including other brain regions, is needed.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objectives: The project had its starting point in the paper in Science 1976, on State Specific
Sciences by Charles Tart and the work on shared dreams by Robert Waggoner. Its objective is to
document the frequency of lucid and shared dreams and to find ways of producing potentially
shared states of consciousness in the laboratory.
Method 1: involved surveys of the student population to establish the frequency of the lucid and
shared dreams and select suitable participants.
Results: The major survey found that about 80% of students reported experiencing a least one
lucid dream with 24% of them reporting one or more per a month. The frequent lucid dreamers
were more likely to report more content and communication with dream figures. Shared or mutual
dreams were reported by 13% of the respondents and occurred most often amongst those having
one or more lucid dreams per month. A survey of students sleep habits indicated that so-called
“power naps” are used purposively by 60% of students with 21% of students using them regularly.
Method 2: The use of a special form of stroboscopic stimulation has been reported by Winkler and
Proecki to facilitate the occurrence of lucid dream-like states. Volunteers reporting lucid dreams
and related experiences, were located in separate laboratory and each was given an half hour of
stroboscopic stimulation. A randomly selected melody was played to one of the participants during
each session. The task was for the other participant was able to successively identify it from a
sample of 4 control decoys.
Results: were exactly at chance expectancy. All the hits came from the sessions in which one of the
experimenters was a participant.
Method 3: A further study is being carried out along similar lines but with participants having
power naps in the laboratory using a REM dream monitor. Participants are selected adepts with
frequent lucid dream and dream recall.
Results: are pending.
Conclusions: None of the techniques seem to work with a wide range of participants although a
modification of the ganzfeld using auditory feedback from the lucid dreams of the receiver,
remains as yet untested. We need to work with highly selected individuals and given their
frequency in the population, this is feasible.

INTRODUCTION:
Nocturnal dreams can be considered as a kind of simulation of the real world on a higher cognitive level (Erlacher & Schredl, 2008). Within lucid dreams, the dreamer is aware of the dream state and thus able to control the ongoing dream content. Previous studies could demonstrate that it is possible to practice motor tasks during lucid dreams and doing so improved performance while awake (Erlacher & Schredl, 2010). Even though lucid dream practice might be a promising kind of cognitive rehearsal in sports, little is known about the characteristics of actions in lucid dreams. The purpose of the present study was to explore the relationship between time in dreams and wakefulness because in an earlier study (Erlacher & Schredl, 2004) we found that performing squads took lucid dreamers 44.5 % more time than in the waking state while for counting the same participants showed no differences between dreaming and wakefulness. To find out if the task modality, the task length or the task complexity require longer times in lucid dreams than in wakefulness three experiments were conducted.
METHODS:
In the first experiment five proficient lucid dreamers spent two to three non-consecutive nights in the sleep laboratory with polysomnographic recording to control for REM sleep and determine eye signals. Participants counted from 1-10, 1-20 and 1-30 in wakefulness and in their lucid dreams. While dreaming they marked onset of lucidity as well as beginning and end of the counting task with a Left-Right-Left-Right eye movement and reported their dreams after being awakened. The same procedure was used for the second experiment with seven lucid dreamers except that they had to walk 10, 20 or 30 steps. In the third experiment nine participants performed an exercise involving gymnastics elements such as various jumps and a roll. To control for length of the task the gymnastic exercise in the waking state lasted about the same time as walking 10 steps.
RESULTS:
As a general result we found – as in the study before – that performing a task in the lucid dream requires more time than in wakefulness. This tendency was found for all three tasks. However, there was no difference for the task modality (counting vs. motor task). Also the relative time for the different lengths of the tasks showed no difference. And finally, the more complex motor task (gymnastic routine) did not require more time in lucid dreams than the simple motor task.
DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION:
The results showed that there is a robust effect of time in lucid dreams compared to wakefulness. The three experiments could not explain that those differences are caused by task modality, task length or task complexity. Therefore further possible candidates needs to be investigated e.g. experience in lucid dreaming or psychological variables.

The relationship between time in dreams and real time has intrigued scientists for centuries. The question if actions in dreams take the same time as in wakefulness can be tested by using lucid dreams where the dreamer is able to mark time intervals with prearranged eye movements that can be objectively identified in EOG recordings. Previous research showed an equivalence of time for counting in lucid dreams and in wakefulness (LaBerge, 1985; Erlacher and Schredl, 2004), but Erlacher and Schredl (2004) found that performing squats required about 40% more time in lucid dreams than in the waking state. To find out if the task modality, the task length, or the task complexity results in prolonged times in lucid dreams, an experiment with three different conditions was conducted. In the first condition, five proficient lucid dreamers spent one to three non-consecutive nights in the sleep laboratory. Participants counted to 10, 20, and 30 in wakefulness and in their lucid dreams. Lucidity and task intervals were time stamped with left-right-left-right eye movements. The same procedure was used for the second condition where eight lucid dreamers had to walk 10, 20, or 30 steps. In the third condition, eight lucid dreamers performed a gymnastics routine, which in the waking state lasted the same time as walking 10 steps. Again, we found that performing a motor task in a lucid dream requires more time than in wakefulness. Longer durations in the dream state were present for all three tasks, but significant differences were found only for the tasks with motor activity (walking and gymnastics). However, no difference was found for relative times (no disproportional time effects) and a more complex motor task did not result in more prolonged times. Longer durations in lucid dreams might be related to the lack of muscular feedback or slower neural processing during REM sleep. Future studies should explore factors that might be associated with prolonged durations.

Study Objectives
(1) To critically test whether a previously reported increase in frontolateral 40 Hz power in lucid REM sleep, used to justify the claim that lucid dreaming is a “hybrid state” mixing sleep and wakefulness, is attributable to the saccadic spike potential (SP) artifact as a corollary of heightened REM density. (2) To replicate the finding that lucid dreams are associated with physiological activation, including heightened eye movement density, during REM sleep. (3) To conduct an exploratory analysis of changes in EEG features during lucid REM sleep
Methods
We analyzed 14 signal-verified lucid dreams (SVLDs) and baseline REM sleep segments from the same REM periods from six participants derived from the Stanford SVLD database. Participants marked lucidity onset with standard left-right-left-right-center (LR2c) eye-movement signals in polysomnography recordings.
Results
Compared to baseline REM sleep, lucid REM sleep had higher REM density (ß = 0.85, p = 0.002). Bayesian analysis supported the null hypothesis of no differences in frontolateral 40 Hz power after removal of the SP artifact (BH = 0.18) and ICA correction (BH = 0.01). Compared to the entire REM sleep period, lucid REM sleep showed small reductions in low-frequency and beta band spectral power as well as increased signal complexity (all p < 0.05), which were within the normal variance of baseline REM sleep.
Conclusions
Lucid dreams are associated with higher-than-average levels of physiological activation during REM sleep, including measures of both subcortical and cortical activation. Increases in 40 Hz power in periorbital channels reflect saccadic and microsaccadic SPs as a result of higher REM density accompanying heightened activation.
