The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

The relation between religiosity/spirituality (R/S), personal beliefs, and mental health has been extensively studied. However, concerning anxiety disorders (ADs), empirical evidence is scarce. This study investigated the differences in R/S and magical/paranormal ideation among obsessive-compulsive disorder patients (OCD; n = 49), patients with other ADs (n = 36), and healthy controls (HCs; n = 35). Our results suggest negative religious coping as being the only parameter showing significantly higher scores in OCD and AD participants in comparison with HCs. Negative religious coping reflects negative functional expressions of R/S in stressful situations. Logistic regression also suggested negative religious coping as the strongest predictor of group affiliation to the nonhealthy group. Further results show no significant differences between other R/S, magical, and paranormal ideation traits among groups. This study underlines an important role of negative religious coping in ADs yet does not clearly indicate a specific causality. Religious-sensitive treatment targeting cognitive aspects of negative religious coping are discussed.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
95 participants (believers and skeptics) took part in a study comprising a series of 4 visual noise and 4 auditory noise (pink noise) trials. Each participant was exposed to 2 degraded stimuli, 1 ESP stimulus and 1 random trial for each sense. Believers and skeptics did not differ in the number of guesses made regarding target identity. However, believers’ guesses were generally more elaborate and complex; their reaction times to decide that something was present (for the auditory condition) were faster, they were more confident about their first guesses and made more misidentifications than skeptics. Overall, more guesses and misidentifications were made for the visual condition.
Believers and skeptics did not differ in their overt detection of weak visual or auditory stimuli. Overall, reaction times were faster when a degraded stimulus was present compared to the random condition. For judge 1, there was a trend toward a significant ESP effect for the auditory condition (z= 1.93, p =.053) and a suggestive effect for the visual condition (z= 1.65, p =.099). For judge 2, there were no significant effects for either sense. For the auditory sense, more guesses were made for the psi than the random conditions. Believers did not differ significantly from skeptics in terms of ESP scoring.
By exploring schizotypy, this study also found evidence for different types of believer and disbeliever; a healthy and less healthy believer and an equivalent healthy and less healthy skeptic. There were no differences between the two different types of believer on ESP scoring.
Overall, the Magical Ideation scale did not correlate with ESP scoring. However among skeptics, there was a significant negative correlation with auditory ESP.

OBJECTIVES:
Religion is a complex human universality, affecting many different parameters of human thinking and behaviour, suggested to also play a major role with respect to physical and mental human health. Although the relationship between religiosity/spirituality (R/S) and mental health has been extensively studied in general in the last two decades and underlined by many biological studies, a literature review shows that the relation of anxiety disorders to R/S is less investigated, than in other psychiatric disorders. Nevertheless religion has often been thought to play some role in the genesis of obsessive–compulsive disorder. At last there are many findings supporting the thesis that beside R/S, magical ideation (MI) and paranormal beliefs (PB) can also have an influence on psychiatric disorders and especially anxiety and OCD, while R/S seems to also have a
special relationship to magical ideation and paranormal beliefs. The objective of the study is to investigate the relation of R/S, MI and PB to each other and to anxiety disorders in general and OCD in particular. The primary aim is to determine resilience and risk factors for the pathogenesis and treatment outcome of anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
METHODS:
The study sample included unselected inpatient and outpatient patients with OCD and other anxiety disorders, recruited the Department for Anxiety Spectrum Disorders of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf, Germany.
Patients have been equally interviewed and assessed by self-report measures at admission and discharge. All results were compared between two groups and in contrast to a control group of healthy individuals without history of mental illness. Variables of R/S, MI and PB will be analyzed with respect to anxiety and ocd scores, as well as to treatment outcome.
RESULTS:
Preliminary results of the project will be presented.
CONCLUSIONS:
The studied parameters are far more multidimensional as thought so far and their relation to ocd and anxiety disorders is analogically complex but interesting. Plausibility of findings and implications for psychotherapeutical treatment are discussed.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Sub-threshold psychotic symptoms are quite commonly present in general population. Among these, Magical Ideation (MI) has been proved to be a valid predictor of psychosis. However, the genetic and environmental influences on the interplay between MI and personality have not fully been explored. A total of 534 adult twins from the population-based Italian Twin Register were assessed for MI using the MI Scale (MIS) and for personality with the temperament and character inventory (TCI). A Multivariate Cholesky model was applied with Mx statistical program. The best-fitting model showed that additive genetic and unshared environmental factors explain approximately the same proportion of variance in MI, whereas a less strong genetic influence on personality traits emerged. Relevant correlations between MI and specific personality traits (novelty seeking, cooperativeness, self-directedness, self-transcendence) were found, suggesting shared influences for MI and these traits. Both genetic and environmental factors explained these correlations, with genetic factors playing a predominant role. Moderate-to-substantial genetic effects on MI and personality were found. Shared genetic and environmental effects underlie the phenotypic correlation between MI (psychosis-proneness) and personality traits, i.e. self-directedness (negative association) and self-transcendence (positive association), potentially representing predictive markers of psychosis liability related to schizotypy and personality.
