Start date: 1994
History:
The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Student volunteers from a Portuguese university (N=217) completed two inventories: Personal Belief System and Attitudes towards Meditation. A subset (N=78) completed a laboratory study of physiological response to meditative prayer. Half of the subjects meditated with a neutral, sub-vocal, mental device, then shifted to a mental device consistent with the individual's belief system. Half reversed the order. EEG and skin conductance data were recorded as well as subjective reaction to the meditation.
It was theorized, following the work of Benson (1996), that the use of a belief system-consistent device would elicit states of repose more profound than those elicited with a neutral device.
In the second half of the experiment, the group using the belief system-consistent device showed a marked increase in alpha activity. Both subjects with strong religious and non-religious components in their personal belief systems reported more positive feelings toward the meditation experience.
Correlational evidence suggests an individual difference factor: A possible trait of high and low alpha-emitting groups emerges after a period of 8-9 minutes in the relaxed state brought on by the Benson technique. The high alpha group displayed externality of causality and a greater religious component in their belief systems.
The evidence suggests that the technique of meditative prayer may be a useful therapeutic tool to assuage the cognition-emotion-stress link. The existence of a strong personal belief system—religious or non-religious—seems fundamental to the efficacy of this coping mechanism. Major limiting factors may include the necessity to practice the technique and a possible trait predisposition for the benefits of the technique.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Two cognitive DMILS studies were carried out in Bali to pursue the question of whether a controlled experimental test could achieve positive results in a non-industrial culture. The task was to see if one person could help another person be more successful in focus meditation. In the first study, half of the participants were trained in meditation on a lit candle to see if meditation training affected the results. Overall, there were significantly fewer button presses in the Help period as opposed to the Control period, t (34) = 2.16, p < .02, one-tailed, Cohen's r = .35, power = .55. Since the most successful condition resulted from Helpers trained in meditation and Helpees who were not trained and who said that they were easily distracted, we pursued this set of conditions in Study 2. Again, we achieve significant results in the predicted direction, t (52) = 2.24, p < .02, one-tailed, Cohen's r = .30, power = .59. These results suggest that experimental parapsychology can be pursued productively in a nonindustrial culture if carried out in a culturally sensitive way.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
INTRODUCTION:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an exercise program, meditation or both combined, on mental stress levels of Cypriot men and women. The group chosen for this study is the working population between 30 and 50 years old, relatively recently urbanised and in a situation of rebuilding their lives following war which displaced them from their traditional homes and way of life. For this group the culture of physical exercise and of deliberate relaxation techniques had not taken root.
METHODS:
40 subjects were committed to participate in the study and they were assigned to: Group A, the exercise group, Group B, the meditation group, and group C, who received both exercise and meditation. A control group D was matched for age and background. All subjects were assessed for physical fitness. They were also given psychometric questionnaires assessing quality of life (WHO-Bref) and stress (STAI form X-2).
An individual exercise prescription was given to groups A and C, 3-4 times per week. Groups B and D attended a meditation session once per week, with instructions to continue the program at home. Group D was not assigned any kind of exercise.
RESULTS:
The groups did not differ from each other at baseline, either on physical fitness or quality of life measurements. There was however a very high drop-out rate of 60% with very few completing their assigned program. This made it hard to draw solid conclusions concerning the effects of each type of intervention. The combined approach, exercise and meditation had a more positive effect than the other interventions.
COMMENT:
The high drop-out rate raises the question whether this working generation of Cypriots needs more preparation to comply with such a program and this merits more sociological investigation. Another question concerns the better results in those who adhered to both exercise and meditation. This group may be self selected, having more faith and expectation from these methods.

Final report - Effect of intuitive observation on light intensity in an optical interferometer: A pilot study
Publication year: 2006
URL:
http://www.bial.com/imagem/Bolsa%2010404.pdf
Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
This experiment investigated the effect of a distant observer on a quantum optics system. The question was whether this form of “psi observation” would cause a change in the photons’ quantum wave-functions. A Michelson interferometer was located inside a sealed, light-tight, double steel-walled shielded chamber, and participants sat quietly outside the chamber with eyes closed. Interference patterns were recorded by a cooled CCD camera once per second, and average illumination levels of these images were compared during counterbalanced “mental blocking” vs. non-blocking conditions. A lower overall level of illumination was predicted to occur during the blocking condition due to partial collapse of the quantum wave function.
Based on 18 experimental sessions, the outcome was significantly in accordance with the prediction (z = -2.82, p = 0.002). This result was primarily due to nine sessions involving experienced meditators (combined z = -4.28, p = 9.4 × 10-6); the other nine sessions with nonor beginning meditators were not significant (combined z = 0.29, p = 0.61). The same protocol run immediately after each test session with no one present revealed no hardware or protocol artifacts that might have accounted for these results (combined z = 1.50, p = 0.93). Other conventional explanations were considered and judged to be implausible. This study supports the idea that psi is a direct means of gaining knowledge, because knowledge of which-path information in a quantum optics system will cause the wave function to collapse.

Testing nonlocal observation as a source of intuitive knowledge
Publication year: 2008
URL:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18194788
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This study explored the hypothesis that in some cases intuitive knowledge arises from perceptions that are not mediated through the ordinary senses. The possibility of detecting such nonlocal observation was investigated in a pilot test based on the effects of observation on a quantum system. Participants were asked to imagine that they could intuitively perceive a low-intensity laser beam in a distant Michelson interferometer. If such observation were possible, it would theoretically perturb the photons’ quantum wave functions and change the pattern of light produced by the interferometer. The optical apparatus was located inside a light-tight, double-steel walled, shielded chamber. Participants sat quietly outside the chamber with eyes closed. The light patterns were recorded by a cooled digital camera once per second, and average illumination levels of these images were compared in counterbalanced mental blocking versus nonblocking conditions. By design, perturbation would produce a lower overall level of illumination, which was predicted to occur during the blocking condition. Based on a series of planned experimental sessions, the outcome was in accordance with the prediction (z = -2.82; P = .002). This result was primarily due to nine sessions involving experienced meditators (combined z = -4.28; P = 9.4 × 10-6); the other nine sessions with nonmeditators were not significant (combined z = 0.29; P = .61). The same experimental protocol run immediately after 15 of these test sessions, but with no one present, revealed no hardware or protocol artifacts that might have accounted for these results (combined control z = 1.50; P = .93). Conventional explanations for these results were considered and judged to be implausible. This pilot study suggests the presence of a nonlocal perturbation effect that is consistent with traditional concepts of intuition as a direct means of gaining knowledge about the world, and with the predicted effects of observation on a quantum system.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Eight experienced meditators were trained to meditate in the hostile environment of brain scanner. There they were presented with, in total, 64 random neutral, erotic and violent visual stimuli during meditation in the scanner. In a separate session they were presented similar stimuli during the resting state. The resting state measurements were also compared to data obtained from 8 control subjects.
Substantial effects of meditation on brain processing of different emotional visual stimuli were found in several brain regions. The relatively largest direct effects of meditation concerned Brodmann areas 18 and 19 in the Lingual Gyrus. Long term effects of meditation, inferred from the contrast between meditators in rest with control subjects in rest, were only found in brain regions that have been shown to be involved in attention.
For the evaluation of the hypothesis concerning presentiment we focused on the analysis of the anticipatory brain signals preceding neutral and emotional visual stimuli in the 36 regions of interest. In previous work with unselected subjects it was found that these anticipatory signals are dependent on the type of the future stimulus, in spite of the fact that at the time the signals are recorded the future stimulus is completely
unknown and will be selected randomly.
Experienced meditators showed stronger presentiment especially when they were meditating. The effect of meditation was quite clearly that the ‘retrocausal’ effect of violent stimuli was reduced resulting in a relative
larger contribution of erotic presentiment.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The oldest Tibetan psychic traditions are those of oracles and Mo divination, a term covering a range of divinatory practices. More recent beliefs include attainment of psychic abilities through meditation; and high lamas called tulkus who consciously choose reincarnation.
A re-analysis of ashram data found that, with participants who completed at least 3 sessions, the advanced practitioners scored significantly better than the other two groups (p = 0.05 and p = 0.04). Psi score was significantly correlated with yogic attainment (Pearson r = 0.57, p < 0.05, 2-tail).
With Tibetan Buddhist meditators years of practice correlated significantly with psi (r = 0.52, p < 0.05, 2-tail). This was due to the monk group: years of meditation, r = 0.75, p <0.01, 2-tail). This result was confounded by significant psi-missing (t = -2.09, p < 0.05, 2- tail) from the tulkus. The 3 participants who scored most strongly in the psi-missing direction all reported childhood memories of previous lives as monks in Tibet during the Chinese invasion, with the subsequent imprisonment and torture.
In the final study, the 2 most experienced meditators gave independently significant psihitting (t = 2.25, p = 0.04, 2-tail). 4 of the 12 meditation variables were significantly correlated with the psi scores, and an additional 3 variables were marginally significant, all in the predicted direction. The strongest correlation with psi was visualisation meditation, (r = 0.734, p < 0.01, 1-tail); followed by time spent in retreat, (r = 0.572, p < 0.05); practicing breath techniques (r = 0.569, p < 0.05); and yoga asanas (r = 0.559, p < 0.05).
This research suggests that psychic awareness begins to manifest more reliably with years of meditation practice.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This study of advanced practitioners of meditation extends our earlier work testing the hypothesis that meditation enhances psychic awareness or "psi" (Roney-Dougal, Solfvin, & Fox, 2008). Ten (male) Tibetan Buddhist monks participated individually in eight sessions, each comprising a meditation period and a computerized test of precognition in which they were asked to rate each of four pictures on a 100-point scale in terms of how likely it was to be randomly selected as the "target" to be displayed at the end of the session. The normalized rating assigned to the target itself was defined as the "psi" score, where a score of zero is chance expectation. Overall, psi scores did not exceed chance expectation, t(79) 0.70, p = 0.49, 2-tailed, r = .08, and the type of meditation (mantra or visualization) did not make a difference. The correlation between years of meditation practice and psi scores was in the predicted direction but not significantly different from zero (rho = 0.28, p = 0.22). Nevertheless, the two most experienced meditators, both Nyingma lamas, achieved significant mean psi scores, t(15) = 2.25, p = 0.04, 2-tailed, r = 0.50, confirming a similar finding from our earlier work.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Many traditional Mahayana, and modern Tibetan, Buddhist texts relate meditation attainment to psychic ability. This teaching served as the hypothesis—that more advanced meditators would choose a psi target correctly, significantly more often than beginners. A basic free-response design was used in which a computer programme (PreCOG) chose a target picture at random from a 4-picture set. There were 25 sets, all pictures of Tibet. PreCOG guided the participants through the procedure, in which they aimed to become aware of the target. 18 participants, Tibetan monks, nuns and Western Buddhist meditators, completed 8 sessions each. Half the sessions used a clairvoyance, and half a precognition, protocol.
Age and years of meditation practice correlated significantly with the psi scores (Pearson r = 0.52, p , 0.05). This suggests that, as one practices meditation, psychic awareness begins to manifest more reliably. This result was confounded by a non-significant psi-missing trend. There was no significant difference between the clairvoyance and precognition trials (t-diff (142) = 0.800). There was, however, significant psi-missing from the group of Rinpoches (t = 2.09, 2tail p < 0.05). The three participants who scored most strongly in the psi-missing direction all reported childhood memories of previous lives as monks in Tibet.

Taboo and belief in Tibetan psychic tradition

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Every culture has its own world-view. Exploring a different culture can often shed light on our own belief systems and help us to see our own concepts. The Tibetan culture is renowned for its psychic practitioners, but there has been no scientific research into their practices. As a preliminary to experimental research with Tibetan monks, this paper presents a brief overview of a selection of Tibetan cultural beliefs involving psychic awareness (GESP). The oldest Tibetan traditions are those of the oracles, which involves deity possession; Mo divination, which often involves a Tibetan deity called Palden Lhamo; and a belief in consciously chosen reincarnation resulting in tulkus who are identified using a variety of psychic practices. There are more recent beliefs regarding attainment of psychic abilities through Buddhist meditation practice. These beliefs are surrounded by many taboos, revealing a certain fear of psi. These are mentioned in the hope that, by studying another culture's beliefs and taboos, we may gain a greater understanding of psi and obtain useful hypotheses for further research.

Yogic attainment in relation to awareness of precognitive targets
Publication year: 2006

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This study explored whether long-term yoga/meditation practice facilitates psi awareness. Data were collected in an Indian ashram setting in 2003 and 2004 from yoga practitioners with three levels of initiation: students (ST) (0.3–15 years practice); sanyassins (SN) (1-10 years practice); and swamis (SW) (4-33 years practice). These preliminary experiments focused on adapting Western laboratory procedures to the ashram setting with a Macintosh laptop serving as a portable laboratory. Each participant had a short meditation followed by an awareness period to precognitively perceive a target video clip that they would see at the end of the session. They then rated four target clips on a 1 – 100 scale for similarity with their awareness experience. A re-analysis (using effect size r) showed no overall significant effect in either year (2003: r = -0.09; 2004: r = 0.08). Advanced practitioners (SW) in both years showed non-significant psi-hitting (2003: r = 0.21; 2004: r= 0.07), whereas the other two groups (SN & ST) were more variable in their scoring (2003: SN r = -0.23 & ST r = -0.38; 2004: SN r = 0.05 & ST r = 0.13). In 2003, in the line with the hypothesis, the advanced group (SW) scored significantly better than SN (p = .05) or ST (p = .04). In 2004 these differences became non-significant. Implications and possible explanations are explored.
