    • The Boolean operator AND between the terms is assumed by default. If you enter the words European Union in the search box, the system returns all records in which both words occur, regardless of their order.
    • When entering a set of words in quotes, e.g "european union", all records containing the literal term "European Union" will be retrieved.
  • Search by access fields (e.g. author, title, etc.):
    • To direct your search, choose the field in which you want to search the word or expression.
    • Search in the field assumes by default the expression in quotes, e.g. European union will retrieve all records containing the literal term "European Union"
  • To perform more complex searches, additional words or expressions may be added.
  • If you want to refine the search results, you can always access the link "search" in the upper left corner of the page of search results.
  • The search engine is not case sensitive. For example, the word congress has the same meaning that Congress or CONGRESS.
  • To truncate your search expression, use the $ character
  • You can filter the results of your search by a date or date range, filling the appropriate boxes.

History:
The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between the subliminal activation of emotional stimuli (facial expressions and verbal expressions) and the peripheral physiological activity enhanced during two implicit memory tasks (fragment completion and forced choice phrase completion) and two explicit memory tasks (free recall and forced choice recognition).
The theoretical framework that oriented this research was the discussion that characterizes the memory as a system where there is no discontinuity between implicit and explicit memory and, on the other hand, their opponents that emphasize the distinction (structurally and process-wise) between implicit and explicit memory. This last theoretical position postulates the impossibility of subliminal activation producing behavioural answers in explicit memory performance. And, on the other hand, it is not possible that supraliminal/attention oriented tasks cannot produce implicit memory changes. The processes of retrieval are the base for those postulations.
Results showed that: (1) emotional stimuli presented subliminally induced a clear priming effect in implicit memory tasks (fragment completion and forced choice phrase completion); (2) this effect is independent of the stimuli category (emotional verbal words or emotional facial expressions); (3) the peripheral physiological activity presented in the memory tasks is positively correlated with the task difficulty; (4) there are no statistical differences between the physiological activity and the valence of the stimuli (positive versus negative); (5) implicit memory performance and explicit memory performance are dissociated.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Studies on temporal perception lack a validated method and a consensual “gold-standard” to measure time perception. Evidence suggests deterioration of timing with aging. This study aimed to develop and validate a neuropsychological tool to measure time perception and to study temporal perception along aging.
Eighty-six healthy subjects, aged 15-90 years-old, were prospectively asked to verbally estimate and produce empty intervals signaled by auditory beeps, of 7, 32 and 58 seconds duration. Two tests were used as “gold standards”: estimating the duration to draw a clock (“clock time”) and estimation of the duration of neuropsychological evaluation (“global time”). Results showed a correlation between estimation and production (p<. 01), and a correlation between estimation or production and “global time” (p<. 01). A correlation between either estimation or production and age (p<. 01), indicating faster internal clocks with aging. Comparison between three age groups (15-40 yrs-old; 41-64 yrs-old; 65-90 yrs-old), showed a trend toward overestimation and underproduction with older age, reaching significance between the extreme age groups (p< .05).
The proposed test seems a good tool to measure subjective duration and the results showed an acceleration of internal clock with aging.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
On the basis of results from a special subject who reported information at a distance during exposure to weak, circumcerebral magnetic fields rotating within the horizontal plane, we designed an experiment to discern if the subjective narratives of normal people exposed to these fields could be similar to the comments of emotionally related individuals who were concurrently generating shared memories about a randomly selected stimulus. Blind matching of the comments indicated that the proportions of 44 students who accurately paired the narratives of the field-exposed subject and the comments of the stimulus person as congruent were statistically significant for 5 of the 7 pairs whose narratives were of sufficient length for analysis. The ratings for congruence of the pairs of verbal behaviors for the 7 pairs of subjects were negatively correlated (rho = -.72) with the geomagnetic activity during the 24-hr. interval within which the experiences were conducted. The results suggested consciousness might also be an insulator to myriad stimuli which might be accessible when brain activity is modified by circumcerebral magnetic fields with temporal configurations in the order of 20 msec.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
During 96 nonsequential days over a 3-yr. period, a total of 53 men and 86 women were exposed only once for 30 min. to transcerebral, weak complex magnetic fields while they sat alone within a quiet chamber. They were asked to record the frequency of specific experiences after the exposure was completed. There was a significant interaction between sex and global geomagnetic activity for the incidence of experiences attributed to memories. Women reported more experiences attributed to "childhood memories" when geomagnetic activity was less than 20 nT, while men reported more of these experiences when the activity was more than 20 nT. Re-analyses of a database of "paranormal experiences" reported by 395 separate individuals over a 100-yr. period indicated that more men than women reported "precognitive experiences" on days the geomagnetic activity was above 20 nT while women reported such experiences if the geomagnetic activity was below 20 nT. These results suggest that these experiences, be they veridical or illusory, may be influenced by global geomagnetic activity that affect the neuroelectrical or neurochemical processes associated with memory consolidation or the attribution of the serial order of experiences during retrieval.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Several tests of frontal lobes functions were administered: Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Tower of London, visual working memory task, and verbal fluency. Other tests assumed to rely on temporal lobe function were administered as well: verbal paired-associates and visual recognition.
The measure of verbal reality-monitoring deficit was strongly associated with hallucinations. It was also correlated with measures of frontal deficit (wisconsin perseverative errors: r = .32, p <.08; perseverative errors in visual search: .37, p <. 05; planning errors in the Tower of London: r = .42, p <.025). By contrast, the measure of verbal memory efficiency that did not involve any reality-monitoring function was not correlated with any of these frontal measures, which shows the specificity of the association with reality-monitoring deficit, rather than memory deficit. The measure of verbal reality-monitoring deficit was also associated with one measure of temporal lobe deficit (visual recognition: -.43, p < .025).
The measure of visual reality-monitoring deficit was associated with visual hallucinations. It was not correlated at all with any frontal measure. However, it was correlated with one measure of temporal lobe deficit (visual recognition: r = -.39, p < 05). By contrast, the measure of visual memory efficiency that did not involve any reality-monitoring function was not correlated with this temporal lobe measure. This suggests that it is actually the confusion between reality and imagination that is involved in this association with temporal dysfunction, rather than a mere deficit in visual memory.

Title: BIAL Grants

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The role of semantic organization in verbal memory efficiency in schizophrenia was investigated. Patients and healthy controls were administered a free-recall task involving 1 nonsemantically organizable list, 1 list organizable in semantic categories with typical instances, and 1 list organizable in semantic categories with atypical instances. Reduced semantic organization was observed in patients. Regression analyses showed that the semantic clustering score in the atypical organizable list made a significant contribution to recall performance in patients. When semantic clustering was controlled, the effect of diagnosis on free recall was significant. These results suggest that depth of semantic organization is a crucial factor of verbal memory performance in schizophrenia. However, semantic organizational deficit does not account for the whole recall impairment.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Verbal and visual recognition tasks were administered to 40 patients with schizophrenia and 40 healthy comparison subjects. The verbal recognition task consisted of discriminating between 16 target words and 16 new words. The visual recognition task consisted of discriminating between 16 target pictures (8 black-and-white and 8 color) and 16 new pictures (8 black-and-white and 8 color). Visual recognition was followed by a spatial context discrimination task in which subjects were required to remember the spatial location of the target pictures at encoding. Results showed that recognition deficit in patients was similar for verbal and visual material. In both schizophrenic and healthy groups, men, but not women, obtained better recognition scores for the colored than for the black-and-white pictures. However, men and women similarly benefited from color to reduce spatial context discrimination errors. Patients showed a significant deficit in remembering the spatial location of the pictures, independently of accuracy in remembering the pictures themselves. These data suggest that patients are impaired in the amount of visual information that they can encode. With regards to the perceptual attributes of the stimuli, memory for spatial information appears to be affected, but not processing of color information.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Several studies have reported an association between hallucinations and tendency to make false alarms in acoustic signal detection tasks. Previous work on patients with schizophrenia has suggested that false recognitions and other types of memory error were positively associated with hallucinations and inversely associated with certain negative symptoms of withdrawal. In this study, 40 patients with schizophrenia were administered a word recognition task. Mixed lists of high- and low-frequency words were presented, then the target words had to be recognized among distractors in immediate and delayed recognition conditions. Hallucination scores were correlated with an increased bias toward false recognitions of nonpresented words. Affective flattening tended to be correlated with a reduced bias toward false recognitions. Anhedonia was significantly correlated with a reduced response bias. Hallucinations and anhedonia therefore presented an opposite association with the response bias. The influence of word frequency and delay on this association is discussed.
