The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The matrix experiment, presented at the SSE Yale meeting in 2017, is a further development of the standard micro-psychokinesis experiment developed and conducted successfully three times by Walter von Lucadou. We have previously conducted a large replication that was positive and have convened a consensus expert meeting to develop a joint protocol. Now we and others have conducted experiments following this protocol. The difference of this experiment from other psychokinesis (PK) experiments consists in the fact that it does not test directly a deviation from randomness, but only indirectly. This is due to the belief derived from our generalized quantum theory that such PK and other anomalistic effects are not causal and not mediated by signals of any kinds or fields, but that they are non-local correlations set up by systemic variables. Hence attempts to “prove” that there are anomalistic signals are deemd to failure long term, at least in strict replications. We have approached this problem by setting up a large correlation matrix of 45 physical variables that are paired with 45 psychological variables, measured during the experiment. We test the number of significant correlations in this matrix against chance and against a control matrix. While
three experiments by Ana Borges in Edinburgh have been positive, our own replication has been negative. We will present the experiment and its result and discuss both the theoretical consequences and potential alternative statistical evaluation strategies for the future. One criticism that can be raised against this experiment is that the statistical procedure, which follows the logic of a randomization test, destroys the correlations, and hence a different strategy should be sought. A possible solution might be found in a kind of adaptation test that tests the joint distribution of correlations in both the experimental and control matrix against a theoretical expectation, thereby circumventing the potential transfer of information that is prohibited by the No-Transfer-of-Information Theorem of our model.

BACKGROUND
The Matrix Experiment, originally developed by Walter von Lucadou, is a special set-up for a micro-PK experiment in which participants do not target the random output as such. Rather a large matrix of psychological and physical variables associated with the experiment is constructed and the number of significant correlations in this matrix is tested against chance and a control matrix. Previous experiments were positive.
AIM
To develop a consensus protocol for this experiment and pilot test it in order to allow for a wider application in the scientific community.
METHOD
We conducted a Delphi-study and convened an expert group to discuss the protocol. The final protocol was used for a first pilot.
RESULTS
We convened 26 experts and found a consensus on a final protocol. The protocol was made public at Open Science Framework at https://osf.io/cx2tf/. One first pilot experiment was conducted. This experiment could not replicate our earlier findings.
CONCLUSIONS
There is a consensus protocol available that can be used by researchers. The first attempt using this protocol was negative. Thus it seems the Matrix experiment is not as such a simple, fool-proof method but is also subject to a decline effect. Additional analysis and discussions show that the effect seems to be preserved within the experiment, but seems to shift between the experimental and control matrix. It is likely that a new and more sensitive method to document it will be necessary. The agreed-upon method of a Monte-Carlo analysis destroys correlations and thus might be overly conservative.

ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
MicroPK is the phenomenon that people can remotely influence the electronic circuits in random number generators, and thus bias the outcome of random processes. Freedman et al. report that patients with lesions to the prefrontal cortex show an increased capability for microPK, leading them to propose the ‘filter hypothesis’: the idea that the prefrontal lobes somehow inhibit the latent ability for psi in humans.
AIMS
In this project, we aimed to find further evidence for the filter hypothesis, by replicating Freedman’s results in a sample of healthy volunteers, in which the supposed prefrontal filter was inhibited using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
METHOD
Using TMS, we induced a temporary virtual lesion in the prefrontal lobe’s healthy participants (n=20) prior to performing a microPK task, in which they were instructed to influence the direction of an upcoming arrow pointing left or right. The target direction was indicated by a word cue (‘LEFT’ or ‘RIGHT’). Performance in this condition was compared to a control condition in which the occipital brain area was stimulated.
RESULTS
We found no evidence on an increase in microPK performance after TMS of the prefrontal cortex – to the contrary, in the experiment participants showed a significant microPK effect in the control condition, which disappeared upon prefrontal TMS. The lack of result cannot be attributed to a lack of rTMS effects: in the control condition, the detection of arrows was impaired by an incongruent word cue, but this effect disappeared in the prefrontal TMS condition.
CONCLUSIONS
The results do not support the filter hypothesis of psi: rather than increasing psi ability, prefrontal stimulation abolished psi. The results fit into a well-known and notorious pattern of non-replications and effect reversals in parapsychology and may hint towards an experimenter effect or a ‘trickster’ effect at play. At present, it seems that prior to further neuropsychological investigations into psi, it is essential to better understand this broader contextual effect.
