ABSTRACT:
Three models of mind-matter interaction (MMI) in random number generators (RNGs) were tested. One model assumes that MMI is a forward-time causal influence, a second assumes that MMI is due to present-time exploitation of precognitive information, and a third assumes that MMI is a retrocausal influence.
A pilot test and a planned replication study provided significant evidence for MMI, allowing the models to be tested. The outcomes suggest that MMI effects on RNGs are better accounted for by a backwards-in-time rather than a forward-in-time process. Whether this finding will generalize to other experimental designs and MMI phenomena is unknown, but it raises the possibility that teleological pulls from the future may sometimes influence present-time decisions and events. This raises questions about commonly usednscientific methodologies and assumptions.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A double-slit optical system was used to test the possible role of consciousness in the collapse of the quantum wavefunction. The ratio of the interference pattern's double-slit spectral power to its single-slit spectral power was predicted to decrease when attention was focused toward the double slit as compared to away from it. Each test session consisted of 40 counterbalanced attention-toward and attention-away epochs, where each epoch lasted between 15 and 30 s. Data contributed by 137 people in six experiments, involving a total of 250 test sessions, indicate that on average the spectral ratio decreased as predicted (,). Another 250 control sessions conducted without observers present tested hardware, software, and analytical procedures for potential artifacts; none were identified (,). Variables including temperature, vibration, and signal drift were also tested, and no spurious influences were identified. By contrast, factors associated with consciousness, such as meditation experience, electrocortical markers of focused attention, and psychological factors including openness and absorption, significantly correlated in predicted ways with perturbations in the double-slit interference pattern. The results appear to be consistent with a consciousness-related interpretation of the quantum measurement problem.

OBJECTIVE:
This study explored whether drinking tea “treated” with good intentions would enhance mood more than drinking ordinary tea, under double-blind, randomized conditions.
DESIGN:
Each evening for 7 days in a row volunteers recorded their mood using the Profile of Mood States questionnaire. On days 3, 4 and 5 of the test each participant drank 600 cc of oolong tea in the morning and again in the afternoon. One randomly assigned group blindly received tea that had been intentionally treated by three Buddhist monks; the other group blindly received untreated tea from the same source. On the last day of the test each person indicated what type of tea they believed they had been drinking.
PARTICIPANTS:
Stratified random sampling was used to assign 189 adults into two groups matched by age, gender, the psychological trait of neuroticism, and the amount of tea consumed on average per day. All participants were Taiwanese and lived in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and the test was conducted over the course of one week to reduce mood fluctuations due to changes in local weather and other common influences.
RESULTS:
Those who drank treated tea showed a greater increase in mood than those who drank untreated tea (Cohen’s d = 0.65, p = 0.02, two-tailed). Change in mood in those who believed that they were drinking treated tea was much better than those who did not believe (Cohen’s d = 1.45, p = 0.00002, two-tailed).
CONCLUSION:
Tea treated with good intentions improved mood more than ordinary tea derived from the same source. Belief that one was drinking treated tea produced a large improvement in mood, but only if one was actually drinking the treated tea, indicating that belief and intentional enhancement interact. This also suggests that the aesthetic and intentional qualities associated with the traditional tea ceremony may have subtle influences that extend beyond the ritual itself.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACTS:
Objectives: A double-slit optical system was used to test the possible role of consciousness in the
collapse of the quantum wavefunction. The ratio of the interference pattern’s double-slit to singleslit
spectral power was predicted to decrease when attention was focused towards the double-slit
as compared to away.
Methods: Each test session consisted of 40 counterbalanced attention-towards and attentionaway
epochs, where each epoch lasted between 15 and 30 seconds.
Results: Data contributed by 137 people in six experiments, involving a total of 250 test sessions,
indicated that on average the spectral ratio decreased as predicted (z = -4.36, p = 6 x 10-6).
Another 250 control sessions conducted without observers present tested hardware, software,
and analytical procedures for potential artifacts; none were identified (z = 0.43, p = 0.67). Variables
including temperature, vibration, and signal drift were also tested, and no spurious influences
were identified. By contrast, factors associated with consciousness, including meditation
experience, electrocortical markers of focused attention, and psychological factors including
openness and absorption correlated in predicted ways with perturbations in the double-slit
interference pattern.
Conclusions: The results appear to be consistent with a consciousness-related interpretation of the
quantum measurement problem.
Discussion: Previous studies with random number generators (RNG) have provided evidence for
mind-matter interactions, but those effects are difficult to model. The present experiment allows
for direct comparison of the observed data against a theoretical model of wave interference. This
offers the possibility of determining what components of the double-slit system appear to

Previously reported experiments suggested that interference patterns generated by a double-slit optical system were perturbed by a psychophysical (i.e., mind-matter) interaction. Three new experiments were conducted to further investigate this phenomenon. The first study consisted of 50 half-hour test sessions where participants concentrated their attention-toward or -away from a double-slit system located 3?m away. The spectral magnitude and phase associated with the double-slit component of the interference pattern were compared between the two attention conditions, and the combined results provided evidence for an interaction (effect size?=?-0.73?±?0.14, p?=?2.4?×?10-7). One hundred control sessions using the same equipment, protocol and analysis, but without participants present, showed no effect (effect size?=?0.04?±?0.10, p?=?0.71). A Fraunhofer diffraction model was used to explore various interpretations of this outcome. This analysis suggested that the distribution of light between the two slits and the horizontal stability of the laser beam were the principle components of the optical system that were perturbed. The second experiment used a duplicate double-slit system and similar test protocol, but it was conducted over the Internet by streaming data to participants' web browsers. Some 685 people from six continents contributed 2089 experimental sessions. Results were similar to those observed in the first experiment, but smaller in magnitude (effect size?=?-0.09?±?0.02, p?=?2.6?×?10-6). Data from 2303 control sessions, conducted automatically every 2?h using the same equipment but without observers showed no effect (effect size?=?-0.01?±?0.02, p?=?0.61). Distance between participants and the optical system, ranging from 1?km to 18,000?km, showed no correlation with experimental effect size. The third experiment used a newly designed double-slit system, a revised test protocol, and a simpler method of statistical analysis. Twenty sessions contributed by 10 participants successfully replicated the interaction effect observed in the first two studies (effect size?=?-0.62?±?0.22, p?=?0.006).

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Six experiments were conducted using a single-photon double-slit apparatus to test von Neumann's notion that the quantum wavefunction is “collapsed” by what he called a psychophysical interaction. Individuals were asked to direct their attention toward or away from the optical system while receiving information about the number of photons arriving per second at an interference fringe minimum. Overall the experiments found evidence supportive of an interaction that appears to “steer” the wavefunction to either reduce or to sharpen interference fringes. This outcome informs efforts to unify subjective and objective modes of apprehending the world because it suggests that these two apparently different ways of knowing may be complementary aspects of a unitary phenomenon, analogous to how a Möbius strip appears to have two sides, but when examined is found to have only one. The correlations observed in our experiments can be interpreted in two main ways: as a form of mind-matter interaction, which implies a dualistic model, or as arising from a common source, which implies a monist model. We propose that a monist model is a more satisfying explanation.

A previous experiment suggested that consumption of intentionally treated tea influenced subjective mood under double-blind, controlled conditions. To investigate this effect objectively, we studied whether Arabidopsis thaliana seeds hydrated with intentionally treated vs. untreated water would show differences in hypocotyl length, anthocyanin, and chlorophyll.
DESIGN
Three Buddhist monks were asked to focus their intention on commercially bottled water with the goal of improving the growth of seeds; bottled water from the same source served as an untreated control. Seeds with three variations of the flavoprotein cryptochrome (CRY) were used: the wild type Arabidopsis (Columbia-4), a gain-of-function mutation (His-cry2), and a loss-of function mutation (cry1/2), where “gain” and “loss” refer to enhanced and reduced sensitivity to blue light, respectively. The seeds were hydrated with treated or untreated water under blinded conditions, then placed in random positions in an incubator and exposed to either blue light or blue plus far-red light. The germination process was repeated three times in each experiment, each time using new seeds, and then the entire experiment was repeated four times.
RESULTS
Data combined across all four experiments showed a highly significant decrease in hypocotyl length in the His-cry2 seedlings (treated mean 1.31 ± 0.01 mm, untreated mean 1.43 ± 0.01 mm, p < 10-13), a significant increase in anthocyanin with all three forms of cry, particularly His-cry2 (treated mean 17.0 ± 0.31 mg, untreated mean 14.5 ± 0.31 mg, p < 10-4), and a modest increase in chlorophyll in His-cry2 (treated mean 247.6 ± 5.63 mg, untreated mean 230.6 ± 5.63 mg, p = 0.05). These outcomes were in alignment with the monks’ intentions because a decrease in hypocotyl and increase in anthocyanin and chlorophyll are associated with enhanced photomorphogenic growth. These experiments suggest that the His-cry2 mutation of Arabidopsis may be an especially robust “detector” of intention.

Arabidopsis is a small flowering plant in the mustard family. Its genome has been fully mapped and as such it has become a model system for plant genetics and molecular biology. Arabidopsis contains a flavoprotein called cryptochrome, a blue light receptor found in all plants and animals (including humans). There is evidence that cryptochrome also has quantum biological properties, used for example in avian magnetonavigation. As such, cryptochrome may be a candidate biological receptor for quantum phenomena such as entanglement and observational effects.
To explore possible quantum-mind-mediated effects of cryptochrome, under double-blind conditions we studied whether Arabidopsis seeds would show differences in the length of the stem of a germinating seedling (called the hypocotyl, short for hypocotyledonous stem) when watered with intentionally “treated” vs. identical but untreated water.
A single source of water was divided into two parts; one half was “imprinted” with intention for improved growth by three experienced senior Buddhist monks, and the other half was used as untreated control water. Arabidopsis seeds with three types of cryptochrome mutations were used: normal, gain-of-function and loss-of-function. Gain and lossof-function mutations refer to reduced or enhanced functioning of cryptochrome. The normal seed is known as Columbia (abbreviated Col-4), the loss-of-function seed contains a mutated gene called cry1/2, and the gain-of-function seed contains a mutated gene called His-CRY2. Seeds were placed in dishes inside a temperature-controlled incubator, the seeds were germinated under conditions of blue or blue and red light, and then the hypocotyl length was measured (blind to the treated vs. untreated condition). Three replications of the germination process were conducted in each of three experiments, each replication using new seeds.
When comparing treated vs. untreated water conditions, the gain-of-function His-CRY2 seeds in both the blue and blue and red light conditions resulted in a highly significant decrease in hypocotyl length, which is associated with enhanced growth in the treated water (p < 0.0001, two-tailed). The same statistically significant outcome was observed in three repeated experiments.
Results strongly support the hypothesis that intentionally imprinted water enhanced growth in an Arabidopsis mutation containing the cryptochrome gene His-CRY2. This suggests that cryptochrome may be a component of living systems that is particularly sensitive to intentional influence; it also provides a clue about potential links between qualia (subjective intention) and quanta (behavior of the elementary physical world).

Introduction Based on the Model of Pragmatic Information (MPI) proposed by Walter von Lucadou (1994) and Generalised Quantum Theory (GQT) proposed by Atmanspacher, Römer and Walach (2002) a new paradigm for testing the psi hypothesis has been developed. Both the MPI and GQT approaches arise from a new theoretical model that defines parapsychological phenomena as non-local entanglement correlations. The new paradigm is called the Correlation Matrix Method (CMM). Lucadou & Walach have conducted several CMM studies claiming the results strongly support the psi hypothesis. After introducing the CMM method, we will present the results of two independent experiments that seek to replicate the previous CMM studies and to apply improved statistical methodology. CMM Method The CMM experiment has been developed by Walter von Lucadou with three positive experimental studies that have now been replicated independently three times. It uses a random number generator that drives a fractal display on a computer screen. Participants are seated in front of the computer with the instruction to influence the direction of the fractal to grow or shrink, using their intention or will only. An experiment consists of 9 runs with 3 different instructions to shrink or grow the fractal, or keep it stable. The experiment is moved forward by key-presses. Out of this set-up 5*9 (45) physical variables and 5*9 (45) psychological variables are created. For example, one psychological variable used is the number of right shift keyboard presses and the example of one physical variable is the mean voltage output of one channel from the random number generator. These 45*45 variables are correlated across all experiments, yielding a correlation matrix with 2025 cells. A control matrix is also constructed after each trial where the computer run a new session without participants to simulate the behaviour of the system during the experiment. The psychological variables from the participant are used together in the empty run to construct the control session. The theoretical prediction is that in the experimental matrix there will be more correlations than in the control matrix. The statistical evaluation follows a classical approach using the differences in the number of correlations in both matrices and calculating a Z-score. However, statistician Jessica Utts has noted the Z-score method is inappropriate because the psychological variables used are not truly independent, inflating the Z-score. A monte-carlo method was suggested. As part of her PhD project, the first author has conducted two experiments replicating exactly the CMM study conducted by Walach (2014). Experiment 1 tested the CMM method with 44 participants yielding a total of 213 sessions. Experiment 2 tested the CMM method with 105 participants, yielding a total of 200 sessions. Results: Both experiments obtained significant Z-scores. Further details of these results and the Monte-Carlo analyses will be presented at the conference. These experiments independently confirm the hypothesis that in the experimental matrix there are more correlations than in the control matrix. Different analyses are still being carried out such as using Monte Carlo method, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and others. Conclusion: As hypothesised, more significant correlations were found for the experimental matrix than control matrix. This supports the theory that psi resembles an effect of quantum non-local entanglement correlations. More studies and a deeper analysis is required before drawing final conclusions. Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This study used a custom computer system designed to induce anxiety in participants and determine if people who are anxious produce more errors in an independent working computer network. Participants (N = 130) were asked to complete sixteen tasks on a computer in twenty minutes to receive a reward. Each participant self-rated their anxiety levels during the tasks. In addition, 130 sessions were run without a computer operator. The network ran independent of the tasks, and operated continuously during the sessions. The first hypothesis predicted sessions without operators would produce fewer network errors than sessions with operators, but it was not supported (p = 0.35). The second hypothesis predicted that anxious operators would produce more errors on the independent network than those less anxious. Initial analysis indicated an unsupported hypothesis, but the initial design did not properly identify anxious users. A post-hoc revised grouping based on actual reported anxiety resulted in this hypothesis being supported (p = 0.04, d = 0.45) indicating that anxious computer operators may affect network communication. There may be other electronic effects as a result of human emotions. Additional research is necessary to confirm these results and explore whether the intensity of emotions affects electronics.

ABSTRACT:
A customized computer system and network were designed to induce anxiety in a sample of computer operators while the network was monitored for errors. The study participants were asked to complete a series of simple computer tasks in a limited amount of time. Rewards were provided to increase motivation and potentially induce anxiety. Half of the participants were part of an experimental group where the software was designed to obstruct their ability to complete the tasks by presenting barriers to their progress. A control group completed the exact same tasks, but they were unencumbered in their sessions. Both groups self-rated their anxiety during the tasks before and after the sessions. During the sessions, unknown to the participants, a computer network continuously sent messages between two computers. The network was not associated with the software or tasks being performed, but the network was monitored for errors. Additional sessions were run when no computer operator was present as an additional no-operator control condition. Hypothesis 1 predicted that sessions with participants present would produce more errors than sessions with no operators, but results were not significant (p=0.353). Hypothesis 2 predicted that participants who experienced higher anxiety would produce more errors in the network than those with lower anxiety. The initial experimental and control groups did not correspond to the predicted grouping of anxious and non-anxious participants. The full sample was examined to produce two
groups based on the actually reported anxiety of the participants. The two groups that were created as a result of this regrouping, anxious group and non-anxious group, were examined for difference
in the number of errors recorded during their sessions. The group that reported higher anxiety produced more errors in the unmonitored network than the group that reported lower anxiety (p=0.038, d=0.45, power=0.61). These results indicate that anxious computer operators may affect network communication, and there may be other electronic effects as a result of their emotions. Though these results are exploratory and preliminary, the strength of these results indicates that businesses and organizations that use computer operators or provide technical support should be encouraged to consider the working environment and mood of their computer operators to avoid unintentional effects that could disrupt the network traffic and operation of computer systems.

Effects of intentionally treated water and seeds on the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana

OBJECTIVE
A previously reported experiment indicated that Arabidopsis thaliana seeds with cryptochrome mutation His-CRY2 showed more robust photomorphogenic growth when hydrated with intentionally treated water as compared to untreated water. The present study attempted to replicate that outcome, adding a condition where the seeds were also intentionally treated. Arabidopsis seeds were used because they contain a photosensitive flavoprotein called cryptochrome (CRY). CRY has been proposed as a possible “transducer” of intention in living systems because it is thought to have quantum biological properties, and as such, it might potentially be sensitive to quantum observer effects.
DESIGN
Three Buddhist monks directed their attention toward commercially bottled water and Arabidopsis seeds while holding the intention to improve the growth of the plant. As a control condition, no attention was directed at water or seeds from the same sources. Under double-blinded conditions, treated and untreated seeds were placed in an incubator, hydrated with treated or untreated water, and exposed to either continuous blue light or blue plus far-red light. The seed germination process was repeated three times, each time using new seeds. A 2 × 2 × 2 ANOVA, with water, seeds, and light as factors, was used to analyze the results.
RESULTS
Treated water was associated with enhanced photomorphogenic growth, as reflected by a shorter hypocotyl length (p = 0.04) and greater amounts of chlorophyll (p = 0.0005) and anthocyanin (p = 2 × 10-6). Treated seeds resulted in greater amounts of chlorophyll (p = 0.04), but also a longer hypocotyl (p = 0.0004) and less anthocyanin (p = 0.01). Plants exposed to blue plus far-red light were constantly more robust than plants grown under blue light, regardless of the type of water or seed (p < 10-10).
CONCLUSION
Intentionally treated water improved the growth of the His-CRY2 variant of Arabidopsis, confirming results of an earlier experiment. Enhanced growth associated with exposure to blue plus far-red light also confirmed to known effects. A more complex relationship was observed with treated seeds. BACKGROUND
This work is a conceptual replication of a so-called matrix experiment, an experimental paradigm proposed by Walter von Lucadou. The work also comprises a conceptual replication of a correlation-type experiment performed by Jolij and Bierman (2019).
AIMS
To test replicability of the correlation matrix experimental paradigm for two different experiments.
METHOD
200 participants were exposed to a pk-experiment, with the psi-task to ‘influence’ the outcome of a binary random process while feedback was visualised. The main analyses were performed following a strict blind analysis protocol, correlating psychological variables to physical ones and analysing the resulting correlation factors for potentially anomalous correlations. Two different types of random data were used to split results as a secondary analysis.
RESULTS
The main experiment (a conceptual replication of a correlation matrix experiment) yielded no evidence of anomalous correlations in the pre-defined blind analysis. Marginal evidence of p=0.064 for the result (or extremer ones) to occur under a null hypothesis was found for the second experiment, correlating questionnaires to the result of the main psi task. In a post-hoc analysis also marginal evidence for a surplus of hits of the participants was found for the main psi task (p=0.064, same number as above, but independent result).
No differences between the two types of random data were observed.
CONCLUSIONS
The replication of the matrix experiment was not successful in terms of searching for anomalous connectivity and correlations between psychological and physical variables.
A similar experiment was marginal successful. Overall the outcomes and observations seem odd enough to not be dismissed as pure chance altogether. But the observations also make clear how intricate psi experiments can be and the ‘Trickster’ qualities of these observations (as e.g. investigated by Hansen) should be more carefully be observed in work of this kind, while observing strict methodology at the same time.

Mind control of a distant electronic device: A proof-of-concept pre-registered study

ABSTRACT:
This study was aimed at verifying the possibility of mentally influencing from a distance an electronic device based on a True Random Number Generator (TRNG). Thirteen adult participants contributed to 100 trials, each comprised three samples of data each of 15 minutes’ duration: one for pre-mental interaction, one for mental interaction, and one for post-mental interaction. For each of these three samples, at the end of each minute, the data sequence generated by the random number generator was analyzed with the Frequency and Runs tests in order to determine if there were any changes in the randomness of the sequence.
A further 100 trials of three samples each of the same duration were collected during normal functioning of the device, as a control. The only evidence of an effect of distant mental interaction is an increase of approximately 50%, with respect to control data, of the number of samples within which the pre-determined statistical threshold for the detection of a reduction of the randomness was surpassed in both tests. Although the effect of distant mental interaction is still weak, we believe that the results of this study represent a proof-of-concept for the construction of electronic devices susceptible to distant mental influence.
