BACKGROUND:
Attribution of agency involves the ability to distinguish our own actions and their sensory consequences which are self-generated from those generated by external agents. There are several pathological cases in which motor awareness is dramatically impaired. On the other hand, awareness-enhancement practices like tai-chi and yoga are shown to improve perceptual-motor awareness. Meditation is known to have positive impacts on perception, attention and consciousness itself, but it is still unclear how meditation changes sensorimotor integration processes and awareness of action. The aim of this study was to investigate how visuomotor performance and self-agency is modulated by mindfulness meditation. This was be done by studying meditators’ performance during a conflicting reaching task, where the congruency between actions and their consequences is gradually altered. This task was presented to novices in meditation before and after an intensive 8 weeks mindfulness meditation training (MBSR). The data of this sample was compared to a group of long-term meditators and a group of healthy non-meditators.
RESULTS:
Mindfulness resulted in a significant shift in attribution of self-agency towards the self in both groups. Novices in mindfulness demonstrated a strongly increased sensitivity to detect external influences in the task after the MBSR intervention. Both mindfulness groups demonstrated a speed-accuracy trade-off in comparison to their respective controls. This resulted in slower and more accurate movements.
CONCLUSIONS:
Our results suggest that mindfulness meditation practice is associated with slower body movements which in turn may lead to an increase in monitoring of body states and optimized re-adjustment of movement trajectory, and consequently to better motor performance. This extended conscious monitoring of perceptual and motor cues may explain the reported shift in the attribution of self-agency by an availability of more self-related cues in the memory upon evaluation of the trial. The reduction of detection threshold in the MBSR group is also likely due to the monitoring of these processes. Our findings confirmed our assumptions about the positive effect of mindfulness on perceptual-motor integration processes.

OBJECTIVES:
Awareness of action involves the ability to distinguish ones own actions and their sensory consequences from actions generated by external agents. It is still unclear if and how meditation enhances sensory-motor integration and awareness of action. The aim of this study was to investigate the motor error, the motor awareness and movement time (MT) in mindfulness meditators in a conflicting reaching task.
METHODS:
Participants were given a visual representation of their reaching movement by a video projector but they could not see their own movements directly. In the reaching task a gradually growing fals feedback was introduced by an angular deviation between the actual movement trajectory and the trajectory fed back to the participants. This task was presented to 11 novices in meditation before and after intensive 8 weeks of MBSR training. This sample was compared with a group of 9 long-term meditators and a group of 11 non-meditators. Dependent variables were (i) deviations of the reaching trajectory from a straight line (motor errors). (ii) angle at which participants got aware of the introduced mismatch (threshold) (iii) movement time to reach the target.
RESULTS:
Long-term meditators had lower motor errors (group x angle interaction: p=.08) than non-meditators. This was accompanied by larger movement time (side x group interaction: p=.056). Compared to non-meditators, novices to meditation had lower motor errors after the MBSR intervention (time x group interaction: p=.068), lower angular threshold (p=.06) and larger movement time (p=.016).
CONCLUSIONS:
Mindfulness meditation is associated with decreased behavioral reactivity and slowing down. These changes lead to better motor performance and to detect lower levels of perceptual-motor conflict. We propose that mindfulness meditation entails a behavioral shift towards an ‘expanded tempo’, which facilitates a broader access to sensorimotor and proprioceptive signals. With this ‘inner openness’ to the movement experience, moment-by-moment monitoring of body states could be realized and online re-adjustment of movement trajectory is optimized. These considerations reinforce the positive impact that mindfulness meditation has on perceptual-motor control and awareness of action.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The default mode network (DMN) has been largely studied by imaging, but not yet by neurodynamics, using EEG functional connectivity (FC). Mindfulness Meditation (MM), a receptive, non-elaborative training is theorized to lower DMN activity. We explored: 1) the usefulness of EEG-FC for investigating the DMN; and 2) the MM-induced EEG-FC effects. To this end, 3 MM groups were compared with controls, employing EEG-FC (mean phase coherence - MPC). Our results show that: 1) DMN activity was identified as reduced overall inter-hemispheric gamma MPC during the transition from resting state to a time production task; and 2) MM-induced a state increase in alpha MPC, as well as a trait decrease in EEG-FC. The MM-induced EEG-FC decrease was irrespective of expertise or band. Specifically, there was a relative reduction in right theta MPC, and left alpha and gamma MPC. The left gamma MPC was negatively correlated with MM expertise, possibly related to lower internal verbalization. The trait lower gamma MPC supports the notion of MM-induced reduction in DMN activity, related with self-reference and mind-wandering. This report emphasizes the possibility of studying the DMN using EEG-FC, as well as the importance of studying meditation in relation to it.

Contemporary philosophical and neurocognitive studies of the self have dissociated two distinct types of self-awareness: a “narrative” self-awareness (NS) weaving together episodic memory, future planning and self-evaluation into a coherent self-narrative and identity, and a “minimal” self-awareness (MS) focused on present momentary experience and closely tied to the sense of agency and ownership. Long-term Buddhist meditation practice aims at realization of a “selfless” mode of awareness (SL), where identification with a static sense of self is replaced by identification with the phenomenon of experiencing itself. NS-mediating mechanisms have been explored by neuroimaging, mainly fMRI, implicating prefrontal midline structures, but MS processes are not well characterized and SL even less so. To this end we tested 12 long-term mindfulness meditators using a neurophenomenological study design, incorporating both magnetoencephalogram (MEG) recordings and first person descriptions. We found that (1) NS attenuation involves extensive frontal, and medial prefrontal gamma band (60–80 Hz) power decreases, consistent with fMRI and intracranial EEG findings; (2) MS attenuation is related to beta-band (13–25 Hz) power decreases in a network that includes ventral medial prefrontal, medial posterior and lateral parietal regions; and (3) the experience of selflessness is linked to attenuation of beta-band activity in the right inferior parietal lobule. These results highlight the role of dissociable frequency-dependent networks in supporting different modes of self-processing, and the utility of combining phenomenology, mindfulness training and electrophysiological neuroimaging for characterizing self-awareness.

OBJECTIVE:
There is a growing scientific interest in mindfulness meditation (MM), yet its underlying neurophysiological mechanism is still uncertain. We investigated whether MM affects self-referential processing, associated with default mode network (DMN), either as short (state) - or long-term (trait) effects.
METHODS:
Three levels of MM expertise were compared with controls (n=12 each) by electroencephalography (EEG).
RESULTS:
DMN deactivation was identified during the transition from resting state to a time production task, as lower gamma (25-45 Hz) power over frontal and midline regions. MM practitioners exhibited a trait lower frontal gamma activity, related to narrative self-reference and DMN activity, as well as producing longer durations, these being negatively correlated with frontal gamma activity. Additionally, we found state increases in posterior gamma power, suggesting increased attention and sensory awareness. MM proficiency did not affect the results.
CONCLUSIONS:
Gamma power over frontal midline areas reflects DMN activity. MM practitioners exhibit lower trait frontal gamma activity, as well as a state and trait increases in posterior gamma power, irrespective of practice proficiency.
SIGNIFICANCE:
First, the DMN can be studied non-invasively by EEG. Second, MM induces from the early stages of practice neuroplasticity in self-referential and attentional networks.

According to the cognitive-timer model, time estimation is dependent on the interplay between arousal level and attention. This anticipates that higher attention and lower arousal, two features of meditation, will result in a longer time production (P). We tested this hypothesis by using a time production task in two forms of meditation: Mindfulness Meditation (MM, n = 36) and Transcendental Meditation (TM, n = 10), with suitable age- matched controls (n = 12 and n = 9, respectively). The MM group was comprised of three groups (n = 12 each) with varying expertise level, to enable studying a meditation proficiency effect. We tested trait and state effects by using a pre – post meditation design. All three MM groups exhibited longer P compared to their control, as predicted. This was found to be a trait effect, as condition or MM expertise did not affect the results. No significant changes in P were found following prolonged TM practice.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The project aimed at characterizing the neurocognitive basis of religiousness/spirituality (RS) and its links with the bodily self. First, by using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), we down-regulated neural activity of the inferior parietal (IPL) and prefrontal areas to test possible modifications of implicit RS in healthy subjects. We found that TMS of the IPL increased participants’ implicit RS. Given the role of the parietal cortex in self-awareness and body schema representation, the results suggest that altered parietal activity is a neurophysiological substrate of self-transcendence. Preliminary results on 12 patients with lesion to either parietal or frontal brain regions confirmed the role of the parietal cortex in RS. The links between self-transcendence and bodily self were also investigated in 96 children. We explored how personality traits influence the development of the abilities to mentally rotate bodies and external objects. We found that mental body rotation is acquired later than mental object rotation (from 8-9 vs. 7 years of age) and that personality traits such as cooperativeness and self-transcendence importantly influence the development of these abilities. Finally, we assessed whether training in mindfulness meditation (MM) promotes congruency between implicit and explicit RS and their general increase in healthy subjects. Of note, for MM participants (vs. no MM controls), we found increased implicit RS after MM. Moreover, explicit and implicit RS were correlated, especially after MM. By using different approaches, the present project fostered our knowledge of the neurocognitive processes that allow humans to transcend the spatiotemporal constraints of the physical body increasing their RS.

Neuroimaging has deepened our understanding of meditation-related brain processes. As clinical research on mindfulness meditation has proven the efficacy of mindfulness interventions, a quest for the neural mechanisms associated with these benefits is justified. It has been reported EEG changes during mindfulness meditation in the delta, theta, alpha and beta bands. Nevertheless, the gamma band and cortico-cortical coherence during mindfulness meditation has not been investigated so far. Our aim is to investigate with high-resolution EEG (64 channels) both issues in a sample of longterm mindfulness meditators as well as novices undergoing the MBSR health program. Here we report some results.

Meditation practice can lead to what have been referred to as "altered states of consciousness."One of the phenomenological characteristics of these states is a joint alteration in the sense of time, space, and body. Here, we set out to study the unique experiences of alteration in the sense of time and space by collaborating with a select group of 12 long-term mindfulness meditation (MM) practitioners in a neurophenomenological setup, utilizing first-person data to guide the neural analyses. We hypothesized that the underlying neural activity accompanying alterations in the sense of time and space would be related to alterations in bodily processing. The participants were asked to volitionally bring about distinct states of "Timelessness" (outside time) and "Spacelessness" (outside space) while their brain activity was recorded by MEG. In order to rule out the involvement of attention, memory, or imagination, we used control states of "Then" (past) and "There" (another place). MEG sensors evidencing alterations in power values were identified, and the brain regions underlying these changes were estimated via spatial filtering (beamforming). Particularly, we searched for similar neural activity hypothesized to underlie both the state of "Timelessness" and "Spacelessness." The results were mostly confined to the theta band, and showed that: (1) the "Then"/"There" overlap yielded activity in regions related to autobiographic memory and imagery (right posterior parietal lobule (PPL), right precentral/middle frontal gyrus (MFG), bilateral precuneus); (2) "Timelessness"/"Spacelessness" conditions overlapped in a different network, related to alterations in the sense of the body (posterior cingulate, right temporoparietal junction (TPJ), cerebellum); and (3) phenomenologically-guided neural analyses enabled us to dissociate different levels of alterations in the sense of the body. This study illustrates the utility of employing experienced contemplative practitioners within a neurophenomenological setup for scientifically characterizing a self-induced altered sense of time, space and body, as well as the importance of theta activity in relation with these altered states.

Experienced meditators typically report that they experience time slowing down in meditation practice as well as in everyday life. Conceptually this phenomenon may be understood through functional states of mindfulness, i.e., by attention regulation, body awareness, emotion regulation, and enhanced memory. However, hardly any systematic empirical work exists regarding the experience of time in meditators. In the current cross-sectional study, we investigated whether 42 experienced mindfulness meditation practitioners (with on average 10 years of experience) showed differences in the experience of time as compared to 42 controls without any meditation experience matched for age, sex, and education. The perception of time was assessed with a battery of psychophysical tasks assessing the accuracy of prospective time judgments in duration discrimination, duration reproduction, and time estimation in the milliseconds to minutes range as well with several psychometric instruments related to subjective time such as the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, the Barratt Impulsivity Scale and the Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory. In addition, subjective time judgments on the current passage of time and retrospective time ranges were assessed. While subjective judgements of time were found to be significantly different between the two groups on several scales, no differences in duration estimates in the psychophysical tasks were detected. Regarding subjective time, mindfulness meditators experienced less time pressure, more time dilation, and a general slower passage of time. Moreover, they felt that the last week and the last month passed more slowly. Overall, although no intergroup differences in psychophysical tasks were detected, the reported findings demonstrate a close association between mindfulness meditation and the subjective feeling of the passage of time captured by psychometric instruments.

Experienced meditators typically report that they experience time slowing down in meditation practice as well as in everyday life. Conceptually this phenomenon may be understood through functional states of mindfulness, i.e. by more efficient attention regulation and enhanced body awareness.
In this cross-sectional study, we investigated whether 42 experienced mindfulness meditators (on average 10 years of experience) showed differences in the experience of time as compared to 42 controls without any meditation experience. In a subgroup of 22 meditators and matched controls heart rate and skin conductance during duration reproduction tasks were assessed. Participants also performed in a heart-beat perception task.
While meditators experienced a significantly slower passage of time and felt that past time intervals were expanded, no differences in duration estimates in the psychophysical tasks were detected. Psychophysiological results revealed hardly any differences between meditators and controls with respect to psychophysiological correlates of duration reproduction performance. Correlational analyses revealed positive associations between heart-beat perception scores and the slope of the heart-rate with duration reproduction accuracy across all subjects.
Overall, although no intergroup differences in psychophysical tasks and hardly any in psychophysiological indices were detected, the reported findings demonstrate a close association between mindfulness meditation and the subjective feeling of the passage of time captured by psychometric instruments. Moreover, the results across all subjects support the notion that bodily processes and the experience of time are related.

Recent research suggests that bodily signals and interoception are strongly related to our sense of time. Mindfulness meditators train to be aware of their body states and therefore could be more accurate at interval timing. In this study, n = 22 experienced mindfulness meditators and n = 22 matched controls performed both, an acoustic and a visual duration reproduction task of 8, 14, and 20 s intervals, while heart rate and skin conductance were continuously assessed. In addition, participants accomplished a heart beat perception task and two selective attention tasks. Results revealed no differences between meditators and controls with respect to performance in duration reproduction or attentional capacities. Additionally no group difference in heart beat perception scores was found. Across all subjects, correlational analyses revealed several associations between performance in the duration reproduction tasks and psychophysiological changes, the latter being also related to heart beat perception scores. Furthermore, former findings of linearly increasing cardiac periods and decreasing skin conductance levels during the auditory duration estimation task (Meissner and Wittmann, 2011) could be replicated, and these changes could also be observed during a visual duration reproduction task. In contrast to our earlier findings, the heart beat perception test was not related with timing performance. Overall, although experienced meditators did not differ from matched controls with respect to duration reproduction and interoceptive awareness, this study adds significantly to the emerging view that time perception is related to autonomic regulation and awareness of body states.

Explicit self-representations often conflict with implicit and intuitive self-representations, with such discrepancies being seen as a source of psychological tension. Most of previous research on the psychological effects of mindfulness-meditation has assessed people’s self-attitudes at an explicit level, leaving unknown whether mindfulness-meditation promotes changes on implicit self-representations. Here, we assessed the changes in implicit and explicit self-related religious/spiritual (RS) representations in healthy participants following an 8-week mindfulness-oriented meditation (MOM) program. Before and after meditation, participants were administered implicit (implicit association test) and explicit (self-reported questionnaires) RS measures. Relative to control condition, MOM led to increases of implicit RS in individuals whit low pre-existing implicit RS and to more widespread increases in explicit RS. On the assumption that MOM practice may enhance the clarity of one’s transcendental thoughts and feelings, we argued that MOM allows people to transform their intuitive feelings of implicit RS as well as their explicit RS attitudes.

Previous studies have shown that mindfulness meditation may improve well-being in healthy individuals and be effective in the treatment of mental and neurological disorders. Here, we investigated the effects of an 8-week mindfulness-mediation program on the personality profiles of three groups of healthy individuals with no previous experience with meditation as compared to a control group not enrolled in any training. Personality profiles were obtained through the Temperament and Character Inventory (Cloninger et al., 1993). In the experimental groups, significant increments after the training were obtained in all the three character scales describing the levels of self maturity at the intrapersonal (Self-Directedness), interpersonal (Cooperativeness), and transpersonal (Self-Transcendence) levels. No changes were found in the control group. Strikingly, these effects were significant only in those groups who were engaged in consistent daily meditation practice but not in the group who attended the meditation training but were less consistent in home practice. Since higher scores in the character scales are associated to a lower risk of personality disorder, we propose that the increase of self maturity after the training may be an important mechanism for the effectiveness of mindfulness-oriented meditation in psychotherapeutic contexts.

to conceptualizations of a relationship between meditation, subjective time, and psychophysiology, we conducted a study probing for changes in temporal integration after meditation. We employed three psychophysical tasks related to perception of sequence in the milliseconds range, the integration of metronome beats, and the perception of alternations in the ambiguous Necker cube. The tasks were administered before and after the intervention. The 91 participants were experienced mindfulness meditators who in three separate 10 minute sessions either meditated by following a meditation session (n=44) or listened to an audio play (n=47), the three counterbalanced sessions conducted on three separate days. During the intervention heart-rate and breathing rate was recorded and compared to a resting-state condition. Applying path analyses, we found several mediating and moderating effects. Regarding subjective scales, those meditators who were less aware of the passage of time felt less emotional arousal. Regarding psychophysiology and switching of the Necker cube, breathing rate significantly mediated the effect of meditation across all participants, that is, the slower breathing during meditation the slower the switching of the two aspects in the Necker cube. Additionally, a moderator effect showed that trait-mindfulness leads to slower switching times in meditators. Regarding the metronome task, and over all frequencies meditation in more experienced meditators (n > 100 hours) lead to a decrease of integration intervals. However, for the fastest (ISI = 0.3 s) and slowest (ISI = 3 s) metronome frequencies an opposite effect occurred: the larger RMSSD during meditation the larger the integration interval. Overall, these findings add evidence to meditation-induced changes in subjective time and the general notion of embodiment of mental functioning. Regarding the switching of the Necker cube, breathing rate significantly mediated the effect of meditation across all participants: the slower the breathing during meditation, the slower the switches of the two aspects of the Necker cube. Regarding the metronome task, and over all frequencies, meditation in more experienced meditators (n > 100 hours) lead to a decrease of the duration of integration intervals. For the fastest (ISI = 0.3 s) and slowest (ISI = 3 s) metronome frequencies, an indirect effect occurred: the larger heart rate variability, the larger the integration interval. These findings add evidence to meditation-induced changes in subjective time and the embodiment of mental functioning. The direct effect of smaller integration intervals in the metronome task is indicative of a more pronounced present-moment focus characteristic of deep meditative states.
