BACKGROUND:
Attribution of agency involves the ability to distinguish our own actions and their sensory consequences which are self-generated from those generated by external agents. There are several pathological cases in which motor awareness is dramatically impaired. On the other hand, awareness-enhancement practices like tai-chi and yoga are shown to improve perceptual-motor awareness. Meditation is known to have positive impacts on perception, attention and consciousness itself, but it is still unclear how meditation changes sensorimotor integration processes and awareness of action. The aim of this study was to investigate how visuomotor performance and self-agency is modulated by mindfulness meditation. This was be done by studying meditators’ performance during a conflicting reaching task, where the congruency between actions and their consequences is gradually altered. This task was presented to novices in meditation before and after an intensive 8 weeks mindfulness meditation training (MBSR). The data of this sample was compared to a group of long-term meditators and a group of healthy non-meditators.
RESULTS:
Mindfulness resulted in a significant shift in attribution of self-agency towards the self in both groups. Novices in mindfulness demonstrated a strongly increased sensitivity to detect external influences in the task after the MBSR intervention. Both mindfulness groups demonstrated a speed-accuracy trade-off in comparison to their respective controls. This resulted in slower and more accurate movements.
CONCLUSIONS:
Our results suggest that mindfulness meditation practice is associated with slower body movements which in turn may lead to an increase in monitoring of body states and optimized re-adjustment of movement trajectory, and consequently to better motor performance. This extended conscious monitoring of perceptual and motor cues may explain the reported shift in the attribution of self-agency by an availability of more self-related cues in the memory upon evaluation of the trial. The reduction of detection threshold in the MBSR group is also likely due to the monitoring of these processes. Our findings confirmed our assumptions about the positive effect of mindfulness on perceptual-motor integration processes.

OBJECTIVES:
Awareness of action involves the ability to distinguish ones own actions and their sensory consequences from actions generated by external agents. It is still unclear if and how meditation enhances sensory-motor integration and awareness of action. The aim of this study was to investigate the motor error, the motor awareness and movement time (MT) in mindfulness meditators in a conflicting reaching task.
METHODS:
Participants were given a visual representation of their reaching movement by a video projector but they could not see their own movements directly. In the reaching task a gradually growing fals feedback was introduced by an angular deviation between the actual movement trajectory and the trajectory fed back to the participants. This task was presented to 11 novices in meditation before and after intensive 8 weeks of MBSR training. This sample was compared with a group of 9 long-term meditators and a group of 11 non-meditators. Dependent variables were (i) deviations of the reaching trajectory from a straight line (motor errors). (ii) angle at which participants got aware of the introduced mismatch (threshold) (iii) movement time to reach the target.
RESULTS:
Long-term meditators had lower motor errors (group x angle interaction: p=.08) than non-meditators. This was accompanied by larger movement time (side x group interaction: p=.056). Compared to non-meditators, novices to meditation had lower motor errors after the MBSR intervention (time x group interaction: p=.068), lower angular threshold (p=.06) and larger movement time (p=.016).
CONCLUSIONS:
Mindfulness meditation is associated with decreased behavioral reactivity and slowing down. These changes lead to better motor performance and to detect lower levels of perceptual-motor conflict. We propose that mindfulness meditation entails a behavioral shift towards an ‘expanded tempo’, which facilitates a broader access to sensorimotor and proprioceptive signals. With this ‘inner openness’ to the movement experience, moment-by-moment monitoring of body states could be realized and online re-adjustment of movement trajectory is optimized. These considerations reinforce the positive impact that mindfulness meditation has on perceptual-motor control and awareness of action.

RESEARCH QUESTION:
There is an increasing effort in research to uncover the underlying changes in biological processes that are associated with reported changes in mental and physical health in response to meditation. Moreover, there is evidence that meditation decreases anxiety and increases positive affect. However, the impact of short- and long-term meditation on the HPA axis activity has been poorly investigated so far. To investigate the HPA axis activity is particularly important because aberrant cortisol secretion is associated with depressive disorders.
The aim of the pilot study was to associate the HPA axis activity-dependent cortisol secretion with the duration of meditation in people with long-term expertise, and to compare patterns of cortisol secretion before and after training of novices in meditation.
METHODS:
Eighteen people took part in the study. Nine of them (age (years): M = 49.8, SD = 7.50) had long-term expertise in meditation (duration (months): M = 264; SD = 95.5), and nine were novices (age: M = 40.2, SD = 11.44). Saliva samples to analyze cortisol secretion were gathered before and after the first and the last training session of an 8 week behavioral intervention termed Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) which includes daily meditation practice.
RESULTS:
In people with long-term expertise, duration of meditation highly correlated with decreased cortisol secretion before (r = -0.69, p = 0.04; controlling for age: r = -0.72, p = 0.045) and after training (r = -0.74, p =0.02; controlling for age: r = -0.68, p = 0.06). In novices, no statistically significant differences in mean cortisol secretions before and after the intervention could be observed, although there was a general decrease.
CONCLUSIONS:
Results suggest that long-term experience in meditation has a favorable impact on the HPA axis activity. This result may in part explain why MBSR has a favorable impact on depressive symptoms.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Awareness of action and the attribution of agency are key issues in the neuroscientific study of consciousness. Attribution of agency involves the ability to distinguish our own actions and their sensory consequences which are self-generated from those generated by external agents. The interplay between perceptual awareness and motor awareness may be an important clue towards understanding how the brain distinguishes between self-generated and external events, and towards understanding both the brain processes and the conscious experience of being an agent. Practices like meditation can enhance cognitive processes related to self-agency as e.g. inward-attention and self-awareness. Although several EEG studies have assessed the specific impacts of meditation on brain activity, perceptual processes, and consciousness itself, it is still unclear how meditation changes sensory-motor integration processes and awareness of action. The aim of our research is to investigate not only visuomotor performance and the subjective reports of self-agency, but also the cortical correlates of the control and awareness of actions in mindfulness meditators. This will be done by studying the EEG activation pattern during a conflicting sensory-motor task, where the congruency between actions and their sensory consequences is gradually altered. This task will be presented to novices in meditation before and after an intensive 8 weeks meditation training (MBSR). The data of this sample will be compared to a group of long-term meditators and a group of healthy non-meditators. In this poster presentation only preliminary analysis of data (reaching performance and subjective sense of self-agency) will be reported.
