Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The present study employs standardized data acquired from the Brain Resource International Database to study the relationship between mobile phone usage, personality, and brain function (n = 300). Based on the frequency and duration of mobile phone usage, three groups were formed. The findings suggest a subtle slowing of brain activity related to mobile phone use that is not explained by differences in personality. These changes are still within normal physiological ranges. Better executive function in mobile phone users may reflect more focused attention, possibly associated with a cognitive training effect (i.e., frequently making phone calls in distracting places), rather than a direct effect of mobile phone use on cognition.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In previous research, we found that many people seem to know who is calling or sending an email or SMS message. Hit rates were above chance in randomized tests.
In this project, we carried out automated tests using emails or telephone calls. Subjects registered online, giving their name, sex and age, the names of three contacts, people they knew well, and email addresses or mobile telephone numbers of all participants.
The computer then selected one of the contacts at random and sent her a message by email or SMS asking her to contact the subject through an email address or telephone number provided on the message. After she had responded, the system contacted the subject asking him to guess from which of his three contacts he was about to receive a message. After the guess was made, the email message was delivered or the telephone call connected. Subjects thus received immediate feedback. After a random time delay this process was repeated until 6 trials had been completed.
In the email telepathy test, in over 400 trials, the hit rate was 41.8%, significantly above the 33.3% level expected by chance (p=.0001). In the telephone telepathy test, in more than 1,900 trials, the hit rate was 43.0%, very significantly above the as 33.3% expected by chance (p <1x10 -9). There was no significant difference between the hit rates with male and female subjects. Both these experiments were also carried out in a precognitive form, in which the sender of the message was selected at random only after the subject had made his guess. In the precognitive email experiment the results were at chance level. In the precognitive telephone experiment the hit rate was 33.8%, only slightly above chance (with 548 trials, p=.03).

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES:
The purpose of this project was to develop automated tests using emails, SMS messages and telephone calls to find out if subjects could guess at levels above chance who, out of three people, was contacting them.
METHODS:
Subjects registered online giving the names and email addresses or mobile phone numbers of three contacts. In each trial the computer picked one of the three contacts at random and sent her an email or text message asking her to contact the subject through the computer system. The subject was then informed by email, SMS message or phone call that one of the contacts was getting in touch with him, and he had to guess which of the three it was. After guessing he received the message or phone call, and thus received immediate feedback. All details of the trials were automatically recorded and stored in an online database.
RESULTS:
In the automated email telepathy tests, in a total of 419 trials there were 175 hits (41.8%), significantly above the chance level of 33.3% (p = 0.0001). There was no significant difference in hit rates with male and female subjects. The highest hit rates were with subjects in the 20-29 age group. In the automated SMS test, in 886 trials there were 336 hits (37.9%), significantly above the chance level (p = 0.001). High-scoring subjects were re-tested in filmed trials, with a hit rate of 44.2%. In the automated telephone telepathy test, in 1917 trials there were 827 hits (43.0%). This figure was very significantly above chance (p <1x10 -9). Again there was no significant difference between male and female subjects. The automated SMS and telephone test were also carried out in a precognitive form, in which subjects had to guess who was about to text or call them before the text or call was made. The random selection of contacts occurred only after they had made their guess. With SMS messages the hit rate was 110 out of 339 trials, 32.4%; and with telephone
calls 240 out of 722, 33.2%, not significantly different from the chance level of 33.3%.
DISCUSSSION:
The contrast between the positive results in telepathy tests and non-significant results in the precognition tests shows that the positive effects cannot be explained in terms of precognition. These automated tests provide a simple, replicable way in which telepathy can be tested in real-life conditions. A new automated version of the telephone telepathy test with two contacts rather than three is now available online on my web site www.sheldrake.org

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.
