Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES: One of the design features of humans is that we can perceive emotions in spoken language and in music. Here we investigate the neurocognitive mechanisms through which primary emotions such as happiness or fear are recognized in speech prosody and in short musical excerpts, with an emphasis on the question of what is common across domains and what differs.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In Study [1], we developed and validated a database of spoken sentences and pseudo-sentences designed to express by prosody alone anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, surprise and neutrality . In Study [2], we tested younger and older adults in the recognition of two positive and two negative emotions in music; accuracy for happiness and peacefulness remained stable, but accuracy for fear and sadness decreased from middle-age onwards; a serendipitous finding was that music training modulated recognition accuracy. In Study [3], we compared Parkinson’s disease patients with age matched controls in the recognition of the same or equivalent emotions in speech prosody (using materials developed in Study 1) and in music (with materials selected on the basis of Study 2), and found a dissociation between domains:
patients were impaired for positive emotions in music but not in speech, and for sadness in speech but not in music. The impairment for music was not associated with perceptual or cognitive dysfunctions, but the impairment for speech correlated with executive dysfunction. This is evidence that emotion processing in speech prosody and music is probably sustained by partially segregated mechanisms. The role of musical training on emotion recognition was followed up in two further studies where musicians and musically naive listeners were compared. In study [4], we found a cross-domain transfer: musicians recognized emotions in speech more accurately than musically naive listeners. In study [5], we found that musical training was positively correlated with the recognition of emotions in music.
CONCLUSIONS AND DISCUSSION: Taken together, these findings support the view that neurocognitive mechanisms subtending the recognition of emotional expressions are partly shared, and partly segregated, in speech and in music.

Does emotion processing in music and speech prosody recruit common neurocognitive mechanisms? To examine this question, we implemented a cross-domain comparative design in Parkinson's disease (PD). Twenty-four patients and 25 controls performed emotion recognition tasks for music and spoken sentences. In music, patients had impaired recognition of happiness and peacefulness, and intact recognition of sadness and fear; this pattern was independent of general cognitive and perceptual abilities. In speech, patients had a small global impairment, which was significantly mediated by executive dysfunction. Hence, PD affected differently musical and prosodic emotions. This dissociation indicates that the mechanisms underlying the two domains are partly independent.

In order to disentangle the complexity of language, Chomsky and colleagues have recently proposed to distinguish the “faculty of language in the narrow sense” (recursion mechanism) and “in the broad sense”. Here we focus on this sense of language, taking it as the embodied expression of inner states, cognitive and affective. We will illustrate, using recent findings from others and our own, that common threads can be found across domains apparently diverse such as speech, music and possibly also voice.

Os gânglios da base têm um papel comum no processamento emocional de música e de fala? Para responder a esta questão, 24 doentes de Parkinson foram comparados com 25 controlos em tarefas de reconhecimento de emoções nos dois domínios. Na música, os doentes apresentam alterações no reconhecimento das emoções positivas (alegria e serenidade), mas não das negativas (tristeza e medo); este padrão não é explicado por défices perceptivos ou cognitivos genéricos. Na fala, apenas o reconhecimento da tristeza está alterado, e esta alteração está associada à disfunção executiva dos doentes. Os resultados indicam uma dissociação entre modalidades na doença de Parkinson. Propomos que os gânglios da base desempenham funções específicas ao domínio no processamento emocional de música e de fala.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.

Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).

Neuroimaging and clinical studies suggest that basal ganglia are involved in emotion recognition abilities. One important source of evidence comes from studies of Parkinson’s Disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disorder marked by a depletion
of dopaminergic input to the striatum. PD patients show impaired recognition of emotions in facial expressions and in speech prosody, but it is still unclear whether the impairment is observed across all modalities and emotions. Music is a powerful tool to investigate emotion-related processes – it is capable of communicating diverse emotional qualities and of eliciting strong emotional responses. Are basal ganglia part of the neural network subserving emotion recognition in music? To examine this question, we tested a group of PD patients (N = 15) in the early stages of the disease (stages I to III, according to the Hoehn and Yahr scale) and without dementia, as assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination. A background neuropsychological evaluation was conducted covering executive functions, working memory, verbal intelligence, depression signs, and audiometric screening. In two experimental tasks, patients were presented with short music excerpts composed to express happiness, peacefulness, sadness and fear/threat (Vieillard et al., 2008). In the first task, they rated how much each music excerpt expressed each of the four emotions on 6-point intensity scales. In the second task, they performed a forcedchoice emotion identification. Patients were also assessed for nonemotional music processing abilities with the scale, rhythm and meter tests of the Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Amusia (MBEA; Peretz, Champod, & Hyde, 2003). For the rating task, results revealed that patients provided higher intensity scores to the intended than to the non-intended emotions of the excerpts. Performance on this task correlated with the scale and rhythm tests of the MBEA, indicating that perceptuo-cognitive musical abilities might be associated with the perceived intensity of musical emotions. In the forced-choice task, participants were able to correctly identify the four emotions well above the chance-level. Therefore, basal ganglia dysfunction does not preclude the perception of musical emotions. In order to determine whether patients exhibit an abnormal performance, they will be compared with a group of healthy controls matched for age, sex and education. This study will contribute to better specify the functional role of basal ganglia for emotional processing, and to inform clinical approaches that use music as a rehabilitation device in PD.

Music and language are outstanding examples of the human ability to make sense out of sound. During the last decades, several studies have suggested a relation of music abilities with early language and reading skills in children. Nevertheless, it remains unclear which aspects of musical abilities might indeed be involved in this presumed relationship. Here we investigated the relation between reading fluency and music processing in school-age children. Our goal was to contrast rhythm and melody aspects in music processing. Our results revealed a positive association between different measures of reading skill (fluency, word identification, and sentence comprehension) with rhythm discrimination, but not with melody discrimination. Though preliminary, these findings are consistent with the notion that rhythm and timing are key mechanisms in music as well as in language.

Evidence indicates that musical abilities may impact early language and reading acquisition, but the nature of this relationship remains unclear. We examined the contribution of musical aptitude to phonological awareness (PA) in Grade 1 (n = 72), after controlling working memory (WM) and reasoning; and the contribution of musical aptitude to reading fluency and accuracy in Grade 4 (n = 64), after controlling WM and PA. In Grade 1, musical aptitude contributed to implicit and explicit PA (respectively, R2 change= .13 and .38). In Grade 4, musical aptitude did not contribute to reading fluency and accuracy above and beyond WM and PA. These findings indicate that musical aptitude impacts differentially reading-related skills as reading acquisition proceeds.

Behavioral and brain rhythms in the millisecond-to-second range are central in human music, speech, and movement. A comparative approach can further our understanding of the evolution of rhythm processing by identifying behavioral and neural similarities and differences across cognitive domains and across animal species. We provide an overview of research into rhythm cognition in music, speech, and animal communication. Rhythm has received considerable attention within each individual field, but to date, little integration. This review article on rhythm processing incorporates and extends existing ideas on temporal processing in speech and music and offers suggestions about the neural, biological, and evolutionary bases of human abilities in these domains.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

An echo of consciousness: Brain function during preferred music

BACKGROUND
Given its emotional and autobiographical properties, music appears as a potential aid in diagnostic assessment and therapeutics in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOCs). Several studies have shown boosting effects on behavior and brain functioning when patients were exposed to (their preferred) music.
OBJECTIVE
The aim of this study was to investigate if these effects on the brain's spontaneous activity are dependent on the level of consciousness.
METHODS
Nine postcomatose patients and eight healthy control subjects were assessed using functional magnetic resonance imaging in two conditions: rest (without stimulation) and music. All patients presented at least an auditory startle, thereby suggesting the presence of residual auditory function. A gradient of consciousness (from unresponsive wakefulness syndrome to healthy subjects) was formulated to evaluate consciousness-level-dependent increases in brain activity and connectivity. Network-based functional connectivity assessed auditory, default-mode, frontoparietal, and music-evoked emotion networks. Furthermore, exploratory voxel-to-voxel analyses were performed at the whole brain level using intrinsic connectivity contrast and (fractional) amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations.
RESULTS
Stronger consciousness-level-dependent increases within network-to-voxel analysis of connectivity were found in the frontoparietal network with the precuneus during music stimulation compared with rest. Voxel-to-voxel analyses showed stronger increases of intrinsic connectivity in the music condition compared with rest in regions previously related to music processing. There were consistently more regions with increased connectivity during the main effect of music compared with rest. These increases of connectivity during music were observed in brain regions involved in consciousness, language, emotion, and memory processing.
CONCLUSIONS
Our results show that music seems to trigger more substantial connectivity changes compared with rest, pointing toward the potential ability of music to stimulate patients' brain function. Further research should focus on effects of music in general, its specific acoustical features, and the effects of simple auditory stimuli, as well as the possible therapeutic and diagnostic effects of music in well-controlled clinical trials.
