The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Psychophysiological research has shown anomalous correlations between unconscious states refl ected by physiological fluctuations and random future conditions. Where the future conditions concerned emotional and neutral events, this anomalous effect has been called presentiment. In the present research, the domain of interest regarding apparent retrocausal effects is further extended to the visual experience of a so-called "transparent" Necker cube. When a picture of this cube is presented to subjects, their experience switches spontaneously between two viewpoints. In one perspective the cube is experienced as observed from "above," in the other it is experienced as observed from below. We measured switching times from "the above" to "the below" experience. Once the subject had indicated by pressing a button that this shift had taken place, the picture of the transparent cube changed into an opaque presentation of one of the two possible viewpoints. The choice of which perspective was presented, "from above" or "from below", was random. When the opaque view was "from above" this corresponded to the view for which the duration was measured (congruent), the opaque view "from below" was the incongruent condition. Arguing that in the incongruent condition the opaque view would "retrocausally" interfere with the "top view" for which theduration was measured, we predicted that in that condition the duration would be shorter. The switching-time effects found in the pilot and two confi rmatory studies were in the same predicted direction. The pooled results showed a mean difference in switching time of 126 msec. These results seem to fi t into a growing database of anomalous correlations between conscious and unconscious behavior and random future conditions. It extends the domain of these anomalous correlations to other non-emotional events. Alternative possibilities, such as procedural errors, are discussed.

We tested whether perceptual reversals depend on working memory by manipulating its load while the participants were viewing the Necker cube. Increasing working memory load delayed the latency and decreased the frequency of reversals. These effects followed a linear function of load. The findings imply shared resources of the mechanisms responsible for perceptual reversals and working memory maintenance. However, reversals were not completely abolished even with the hard seven-consonants load, suggesting that bottom-up processes continue to operate in the bistable perception dynamics when top-down mechanisms are attenuated.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A visual stimulus is defined as ambiguous when observers perceive it as having at least two distinct and spontaneously alternating interpretations. Neuroimaging studies suggest an involvement of a right fronto-parietal network regulating the balance between stable percepts and the triggering of alternative interpretations. As spontaneous perceptual reversals may occur even in the absence of attention to these stimuli, we investigated neural activity patterns in response to perceptual changes of ambiguous Necker cube under different amounts of working memory load using a dual-task design. We hypothesized that the same regions that process working memory load are involved in perceptual switching and confirmed the prediction that perceptual reversals led to fMRI responses that linearly depended on load. Accordingly, posterior Superior Parietal Lobule, anterior Prefrontal and Dorsolateral Prefrontal cortices exhibited differential BOLD signal changes in response to perceptual reversals under working memory load. Our results also suggest that the posterior Superior Parietal Lobule may be directly involved in the emergence of perceptual reversals, given that it specifically reflects both perceptual versus real changes and load levels. The anterior Prefrontal and Dorsolateral Prefrontal cortices, showing a significant interaction between reversal levels and load, might subserve a modulatory role in such reversals, in a mirror symmetric way: in the former activation is suppressed by the highest loads, and in the latter deactivation is reduced by highest loads, suggesting a more direct role of the aPFC in reversal generation.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

A visual stimulus is defined as ambiguous when observers perceive it as having at least two distinct and spontaneously alternating interpretations. Neuroimaging studies suggest an involvement of a right fronto-parietal network regulating the balance between stable percepts and the triggering of alternative interpretations. As spontaneous perceptual reversals may occur even in the absence of attention to these stimuli, we investigated neural activity patterns in response to perceptual changes of ambiguous Necker cube under different amounts of working memory load using a dual-task design. We hypothesized that the same regions that process working memory load are involved in perceptual switching and confirmed the prediction that perceptual reversals led to fMRI responses that linearly depended on load. Accordingly, posterior Superior Parietal Lobule, anterior Prefrontal and Dorsolateral Prefrontal cortices exhibited differential BOLD signal changes in response to perceptual reversals under working memory load. Our results also suggest that the posterior Superior Parietal Lobule may be directly involved in the emergence of perceptual reversals, given that it specifically reflects both perceptual versus real changes and load levels. The anterior Prefrontal and Dorsolateral Prefrontal cortices, showing a significant interaction between reversal levels and load, might subserve a modulatory role in such reversals, in a mirror symmetric way: in the former activation is suppressed by the highest loads, and in the latter deactivation is reduced by highest loads, suggesting a more direct role of the aPFC in reversal generation.

We employed three psychophysical tasks related to perception of sequence in the milliseconds range, the integration of metronome beats, and the perception of alternations in the ambiguous Necker cube. The tasks were administered before and after the intervention. The 91 participants were experienced mindfulness meditators who in three separate 10 minute sessions either meditated by following a meditation session (n=44) or listened to an audio play (n=47), the three counterbalanced sessions conducted on three separate days. During the intervention heart-rate and breathing rate was recorded and compared to a resting-state condition. Applying path analyses, we found several mediating and moderating effects. Regarding subjective scales, those meditators who were less aware of the passage of time felt less emotional arousal. Regarding psychophysiology and switching of the Necker cube, breathing rate significantly mediated the effect of meditation across all participants, that is, the slower breathing during meditation the slower the switching of the two aspects in the Necker cube. Additionally, a moderator effect showed that trait-mindfulness leads to slower switching times in meditators. Regarding the metronome task, and over all frequencies meditation in more experienced meditators (n > 100 hours) lead to a decrease of integration intervals. However, for the fastest (ISI = 0.3 s) and slowest (ISI = 3 s) metronome frequencies an opposite effect occurred: the larger RMSSD during meditation the larger the integration interval. Overall, these findings add evidence to meditation-induced changes in subjective time and the general notion of embodiment of mental functioning. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

ABSTRACT:
The study was based on conceptualizations pertaining to the relationship between meditation, the subjective present, and psychophysiology. We aimed to assess whether physiological changes of heart rate and breathing rate during meditation would influence the timing of perceived events. We employed three psychophysical tasks related to perception of sequence, the integration of metronome beats, and the perception of the Necker cube. The tasks were administered before and after the intervention. Participants were experienced mindfulness meditators who in three separate 10-minute sessions, conducted on three separate days, either meditated by following a meditation session (n=44) or listened to an audio play (n=47). During the intervention heart-rate and breathing rate were recorded and compared to a resting-state condition. Regarding the switching of the Necker cube, breathing rate significantly mediated the effect of meditation across all participants: the slower the breathing during meditation, the slower the switches of the two aspects of the Necker cube. Regarding the metronome task, and over all frequencies, meditation in more experienced meditators (n > 100 hours) lead to a decrease of the duration of integration intervals. For the fastest (ISI = 0.3 s) and slowest (ISI = 3 s) metronome frequencies, an indirect effect occurred: the larger heart rate variability, the larger the integration interval. These findings add evidence to meditation-induced changes in subjective time and the embodiment of mental functioning. The direct effect of smaller integration intervals in the metronome task is indicative of a more pronounced present-moment focus characteristic of deep meditative states.
