Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The regularity of the physical world and the biomechanics of the human body movements generate distributions of highly probable states that are internalized by the brain in the course of a lifetime. In Bayesian terms, the brain exploits prior knowledge, especially under conditions when sensory input is unavailable or uncertain, to predictively anticipate the most likely outcome of upcoming stimuli and movements. These internal models, formed during development, yet still malleable in adults, continuously adapt through the learning of novel stimuli and movements.
Traditionally, neural beta (ß) oscillations are considered essential for maintaining sensorimotor and cognitive representations, and for temporal coding of expectations. However, recent findings show that fluctuations of ß band power in the resting state strongly correlate between cortical association regions. Moreover, central (hub) regions form strong interactions over time with different brain regions/networks (dynamic core). ß band centrality fluctuations of regions of the dynamic core predict global efficiency peaks suggesting a mechanism for network integration. Furthermore, this temporal architecture is surprisingly stable, both in topology and dynamics, during the observation of ecological natural visual scenes, whereas synthetic temporally scrambled stimuli modify it. We propose that spontaneous ß rhythms may function as a long-term “prior” of frequent environmental stimuli and behaviors.

Growing evidence shows that theta-band (4–7 Hz) activity in the auditory cortex phase-locks to rhythms of overt speech. Does theta activity also encode the rhythmic dynamics of inner speech? Previous research established that silent reading of direct speech quotes (e.g., Mary said: “This dress is lovely!”) elicits more vivid inner speech than indirect speech quotes (e.g., Mary said that the dress was lovely). As we cannot directly track the phase alignment between theta activity and inner speech over time, we used EEG to measure the brain's phase-locked responses to the onset of speech quote reading. We found that direct (vs. indirect) quote reading was associated with increased theta phase synchrony over trials at 250–500 ms post-reading onset, with sources of the evoked activity estimated in the speech processing network. An eye-tracking control experiment confirmed that increased theta phase synchrony in direct quote reading was not driven by eye movement patterns, and more likely reflects synchronous phase resetting at the onset of inner speech. These findings suggest a functional role of theta phase modulation in reading-induced inner speech.

ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Inner speech (talking or hearing voices in the mind) is a prevalent conscious experience shared by many of us. Research shows that inner speech shares temporal features and neural correlates with overt speech but it remains unclear how inner speech is generated by the brain.
AIMS
Because overt speech is perceived optimally when its rhythm is synchronously tracked by oscillatory ‘brain waves’, we ask if inner speech could also be generated or perceived through such brain waves.
METHOD
We used electroencephalography (EEG) to record neurophysiological signals of inner speech, which was induced by contrasting silent reading of direct speech quotes (e.g., Mary said: “My life is amazing!”) against linguistically-matched indirect speech quotes (e.g., Mary said that her life was amazing.).
RESULTS
In two experiments, we showed that direct (vs. indirect) quote reading was associated with increased phase-locking (i.e. more synchronous brain waves across reading trials) at 3-5Hz frequencies. We did not observe any conditional effects on power (i.e. the amplitude of brain waves). Experimental manipulations on the loudness (loud vs. quiet) or the articulation level (specific or unspecific) of inner speech did not affect the phase (timing) or power (amplitude) of brain waves.
CONCLUSIONS
Inner speech in silent reading of speech quotes modulates the phase of the brain’s oscillatory rhythm but does not change the overall level of neural activity. It is likely a perceptual consequence of the brain ‘tuning in’ to frequencies that promote a verbal structure, which arranges phonological representations (i.e. how the words sound) into a melodic whole, giving rise to a sensation of hearing a speech.
