In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).

INTRODUCTION:
After a hypnotic induction, medium and highly hypnotizable individuals often report spontaneous alterations in various dimensions of consciousness. Few studies investigating these experiences have controlled for the inherent demands of specific hypnotic suggestions and fewer still have considered their dynamic properties and neural correlates.
METHODS:
We adopted a neurophenomenological approach to investigate neutral hypnosis, which involves no specific suggestion other than to go into hypnosis, with 37 individuals of high, medium, and low hypnotizability (Highs, Mediums, and Lows). Their reports of depth and spontaneous experience at baseline, following a hypnotic induction, and then after multiple rest periods were analyzed and related to EEG frequency band power and global functional connectivity.
RESULTS:
Hypnotizability was marginally associated with lower global functional connectivity during hypnosis. Perceived hypnotic depth increased substantially after the induction especially among Highs and then Mediums, but remained almost unchanged among Lows. In the sample as a whole, depth correlated moderately to strongly with power and/or power heterogeneity for the fast EEG frequencies of beta2, beta3, and gamma, but independently only among Highs. The spontaneous phenomenology of Lows referred primarily to the ongoing experiment and everyday concerns, those of Mediums to vestibular and other bodily experiences, and those of Highs to imagery and positive affect/exceptional experiences. The latter two phenomena were associated with lower global functional connectivity during hypnosis. Imagery correlated positively with gamma power heterogeneity and negatively with alpha1 power heterogeneity. Generally, the pattern of correlations for the Highs was the opposite of that for the Lows.
CONCLUSIONS:
Experienced hypnotic depth and spontaneous phenomena following a neutral hypnotic induction vary as a function of hypnotizability and are related to global functional connectivity and EEG band wave activity.

OBJECTIVES:
Very hypnotizable individuals commonly report a variety of anomalous experiences after a hypnotic induction, however, there has been no previous research on the neurophenomenology of spontaneous hypnotic experiences, which this research focused on.
METHODS:
We used a stratified sample (N = 40) of high, medium, and low hypnotizable participants. In session 1, cortical activity was measured using qEEG during an eyes-closed sitting-quietly period and while voluntarily lifting an arm prior to and following a hypnotic induction. In session 2, participants’ spontaneous mentation was obtained in reference to a baseline period and multiple prompts following a hypnotic induction, which consisted of the suggestion for participants to go into their “deepest” state. Participants also completed the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI) for baseline and hypnosis periods, and gave reports of hypnotic depth for different periods.
RESULTS:
There were main effects of hypnotizability, condition (baseline and hypnosis) and an interaction between
them. Although the groups did not exhibit different hypnotic depth reports at baseline, hypnotic depth was found to increase in medium and high hypnotizables during hypnosis. With regard to the PCI, hypnotizability was related to having an altered experience, and various other alterations. Participants’ deepest hypnotic state, relative to baseline, was also associated with altered experience and various other alterations, and there was a significant interaction between these variables. Alterations in consciousness were more common in medium and high hypnotizables than lows, especially after hypnosis. Verbal reports were content analyzed according to experiential categories. The experience of low hypnotizables was characterized by “normal” mentation, that of medium hypnotizables was centered more on vestibular and similar sensations, and that of high hypnotizables contained imagery, positive affect and mystical-like phenomena. Spectral and source localization EEG analyses corroborated various patterns of differential brain functioning across levels of hypnotizability and during different conditions. Among the most salient findings were a positive correlation between a global measure of brain functioning complexity (omega complexity) and hypnotizability, and a positive correlation between omega complexity and 2 types of experiences: positive affect/mystical-like phenomena, and imagery. The induction of hypnosis had different effects on low and high hypnotizables: whereas frontal cortical activity increased from baseline to hypnosis in the former, it decreased in the latter.
CONCLUSIONS:
Results suggest that a hypnotic procedure can effect significant alterations in consciousness, and it show a clear correspondence between phenomenological reports and EEG activity.

Contemporary philosophical and neurocognitive studies of the self have dissociated two distinct types of self-awareness: a “narrative” self-awareness (NS) weaving together episodic memory, future planning and self-evaluation into a coherent self-narrative and identity, and a “minimal” self-awareness (MS) focused on present momentary experience and closely tied to the sense of agency and ownership. Long-term Buddhist meditation practice aims at realization of a “selfless” mode of awareness (SL), where identification with a static sense of self is replaced by identification with the phenomenon of experiencing itself. NS-mediating mechanisms have been explored by neuroimaging, mainly fMRI, implicating prefrontal midline structures, but MS processes are not well characterized and SL even less so. To this end we tested 12 long-term mindfulness meditators using a neurophenomenological study design, incorporating both magnetoencephalogram (MEG) recordings and first person descriptions. We found that (1) NS attenuation involves extensive frontal, and medial prefrontal gamma band (60–80 Hz) power decreases, consistent with fMRI and intracranial EEG findings; (2) MS attenuation is related to beta-band (13–25 Hz) power decreases in a network that includes ventral medial prefrontal, medial posterior and lateral parietal regions; and (3) the experience of selflessness is linked to attenuation of beta-band activity in the right inferior parietal lobule. These results highlight the role of dissociable frequency-dependent networks in supporting different modes of self-processing, and the utility of combining phenomenology, mindfulness training and electrophysiological neuroimaging for characterizing self-awareness.

Meditation practice can lead to what have been referred to as "altered states of consciousness."One of the phenomenological characteristics of these states is a joint alteration in the sense of time, space, and body. Here, we set out to study the unique experiences of alteration in the sense of time and space by collaborating with a select group of 12 long-term mindfulness meditation (MM) practitioners in a neurophenomenological setup, utilizing first-person data to guide the neural analyses. We hypothesized that the underlying neural activity accompanying alterations in the sense of time and space would be related to alterations in bodily processing. The participants were asked to volitionally bring about distinct states of "Timelessness" (outside time) and "Spacelessness" (outside space) while their brain activity was recorded by MEG. In order to rule out the involvement of attention, memory, or imagination, we used control states of "Then" (past) and "There" (another place). MEG sensors evidencing alterations in power values were identified, and the brain regions underlying these changes were estimated via spatial filtering (beamforming). Particularly, we searched for similar neural activity hypothesized to underlie both the state of "Timelessness" and "Spacelessness." The results were mostly confined to the theta band, and showed that: (1) the "Then"/"There" overlap yielded activity in regions related to autobiographic memory and imagery (right posterior parietal lobule (PPL), right precentral/middle frontal gyrus (MFG), bilateral precuneus); (2) "Timelessness"/"Spacelessness" conditions overlapped in a different network, related to alterations in the sense of the body (posterior cingulate, right temporoparietal junction (TPJ), cerebellum); and (3) phenomenologically-guided neural analyses enabled us to dissociate different levels of alterations in the sense of the body. This study illustrates the utility of employing experienced contemplative practitioners within a neurophenomenological setup for scientifically characterizing a self-induced altered sense of time, space and body, as well as the importance of theta activity in relation with these altered states.

Although most definitions of hypnosis consider inductions as the initial stage in a hypnosis protocol, knowledge of inductions remains poor and uninformed by recent developments in theory and research. It is frequently argued that inductions play a critical role in hypnotic responding or, by contrast, are largely interchangeable and unimportant. Drawing on the literature on suggestibility, spontaneous phenomenology, neurophysiology, and cognition, this article argues that the value of inductions, as well as the potential value of inductions, is more nuanced and uncertain. Certain components of standard inductions appear to be efficacious in enhancing suggestibility, whereas others do not have any clear benefits. The impact of inductions on suggestibility seems to vary across suggestions and modes of assessment with the sources of this variability being unknown. Considering these effects, and the broader impact of inductions on spontaneous conscious states and cognition, through the lens of heterogeneity in high hypnotic suggestibility and componential models of hypnotic suggestibility may offer novel research avenues in this area. The article concludes by arguing for the practical and theory-driven optimization of inductions.

Research on meditation and mindfulness on one side, and investigations of consciousness and its neural correlates on the other side, have mostly proceeded independently. Both lines of research have developed remarkably over the last decades, though with a limited cross-reference.
AIMS
The project aimed to bridge mindfulness meditation and consciousness investigations with a particular focus on long-term meditators (Theravada Buddhist monks), and on related neuroplasticity, by investigating both meditation states and traits. Phenomenological reports where emphasized in the project, with their electrophysiological correlates, in experiments with pain and emotional stimuli. The main meditation styles, Focused Attention Meditation (FAM), Open Monitoring Meditation (OMM) and Loving Kindness Meditation (LKM) were investigated in the project, as contrasted with a non-meditative Rest condition. Mind wandering and visual consciousness were also investigated in the project by combining behavioral and subjective report measures. Finally, theoretical developments took place in the project bridging mindfulness meditation and consciousness research lines.
METHOD
Behavioral, phenomenological, electroencephalographic (EEG), magnetoencephalographic (MEG), functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and dispositional self-report measures were used in the project. Cross-sectional investigations with long-term virtuoso meditators and a matched group of novice meditators, as well as longitudinal studies with 8 week mindfulness training and pre-post measures also involving a control group, were performed.
RESULTS
The project has found novel neural correlates of the three main forms of meditation FAM, OMM and LKM, in terms of both differential and shared brain activity and functional connectivity patterns. State and trait-related effects with pain and emotion stimuli were also found, in correlation with different dimensions of experience. Pain intensity was found to depend on aversion and identification dimensions of experience, in line with Buddhist psychology. The investigations with long-term meditators revealed a prominent involvement of a widespread alpha rhythm and coherence in the brain, with particular reference to anterior sites of the brain, which can be interpreted as a key neurophysiological marker of consciousness states developed in long-term meditators. Specific effects of mindfulness training on the reduction of mind wandering, and on the time course of perceptual awareness, were also found in the project.
CONCLUSIONS
The project has led to novel insights bridging dimensions of conscious experience with mindfulness meditation training, and on their neural correlates, also leading to new theoretical advances.

Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.
