Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Due to the high levels of financial and personal burden of occupational stress this study aimed to examine mood, diurnal cortisol and stress reactivity among pre-registration doctors (PRHO) on 2 occassions: one capturing high stress (due to high novelty and low control) and one low stress (due to low novelty and high control). This equated to the beginning and end of a clinical rotation. 36 PRHO were recruited (Males=15, mean age 25 years). Measures of mood alongside diurnal cortisol and stress reactivity (using the CO2 test) were assessed at the beginning and end of a rotation.
It was found that self-reported mood remained stable across the 2 assessments as did the stress reactivity. However, significant differences were found for diurnal cortisol, with higher levels on waking at the end of a rotation but a greater rise in cortisol in the half hour after waking at the beginning of a rotation.
These results show evidence of a significant alteration of diurnal function of the HPA in response to occupational demands.

Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Title:
Psychological distress on nurses: The role of personal and professional characteristics

This study explored the role of nurses’ personal and professional characteristics on the expression of psychological distress, overcoming the limitations of studying humans’ responses to work environments using the stress-strain approach. The sample consisted of 2203 registered nurses working in Portugal. The investigation protocol included a Sociodemographic and Professional Questionnaire and the Portuguese version of the General Health Questionnaire-12. A high percentage of nurses (79.3%) showed levels of psychological distress, deserving for clinical attention. Significant differences were found between nurses with and without clinical symptoms of psychological distress. Female nurses, those working in primary health care, and nurses with no hobby and no physical exercise behaviors, presented significant levels of distress, deserving for clinical attention. These nurses reported high levels of anxiety/depression and social dysfunction. More, the absence of a hobby and the lack of physical exercise behaviors constituted as risk factors for the experience of clinical symptoms of distress, anxiety/depression and social dysfunction. These findings represent an important issue in occupational stress research, suggesting that leisure activities may be a protective factor for nurses’ mental health, acting as a “Daily Uplifts” for the stress recovery balance. Thus, in order to ensure the patients’ safety and the quality of health care, health organizations must consider nurses’ personal and professional characteristics that influence their mental health and global functioning when developing occupational health programs.
