Gender differences in sensation seeking and paranormal/anomalous experiences
Publication year: 2015
URL:
http://benthamopen.com/ABSTRACT/TOPSYJ-8-54
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Sensation seeking is the tendency to pursue sensory pleasure and excitement. A body of research indicates that
sensation seeking may contribute to paranormal/anomalous experiences. Examination of relations between sensations
seeking and paranormal beliefs has resulted in a limited body of research. This paper hypothesizes that both – sensation
seeking and paranormal/anomalous experiences – will be significantly and positively correlated. Two samples of 446 females and 162 males (MAge = 8.60, SD = 4.65) filled two questionnaires, Sensation Seeking Scale and a 10-item self-report inventory designed to collect information on spontaneous paranormal/anomalous experiences. An index of experiences (Index) was constructed to correlate with the sensations seeking. More than half have experienced different types of paranormal/ anomalous experiences, mainly telepathy and déjà-vu. The main hypothesis was supported for both, males (p = .002, one-tailed) and females (p < .001). Factor analysis showed that women tended to score higher than men, explaining the 6.5% of the variance. These findings also suggest that sensation seeking may have some utility in predicting subjects' psi performance.

Supernatural belief is not modulated by intuitive thinking style or cognitive inhibition
Publication year: 2017
URL:
http://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-14090-9
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
According to the Intuitive Belief Hypothesis, supernatural belief relies heavily on intuitive thinking—and decreases when analytic thinking is engaged. After pointing out various limitations in prior attempts to support this Intuitive Belief Hypothesis, we tested it across three new studies using a variety of paradigms, ranging from a pilgrimage field study to a neurostimulation experiment. In all three studies, we found no relationship between intuitive or analytical thinking and supernatural belief. We conclude that it is premature to explain belief in gods as ‘intuitive’, and that other factors, such as socio-cultural upbringing, are likely to play a greater role in the emergence and maintenance of supernatural belief than cognitive style.

Final report - Using neural stimulation to modulate paranormal beliefs

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Dual-processing theories of belief argue that supernatural beliefs are underpinned by a weak analytical thinking style and by a strong intuitive thinking style. We call this the Intuitive Belief Hypothesis. We address the limitations of this literature, particularly an over-reliance on analytical primes and methods, and in two studies develop new manipulations to causally test the Intuitive Belief Hypothesis.
AIMS
In order to test the Intuitive Belief Hypothesis in a more direct and robust fashion, we conducted two studies using experimental methods where we attempted to modulate intuitive/analytical cognitive style and cognitive inhibition and test the effects of this modulation on paranormal beliefs.
METHOD AND RESULTS
Study 1 tested the role of intuition/analytical thinking and cognitive inhibition in modulating supernatural beliefs. We used transcranial direct current stimulation of the right Inferior Frontal Gyrus and were able to successfully increase cognitive inhibition and down-modulate paranormal beliefs, but we found no relationship between intuitive/analytical thinking and paranormal beliefs. In study 2 we developed an innovative two-week long training programme with the aim of increasing either intuitive or analytical thinking in two groups. While this training had an effect on cognitive styles, neither group experienced changes in their paranormal beliefs.
CONCLUSION
We conclude that it is premature to explain belief in gods as ‘intuitive’, and that these beliefs are likely to be rooted in socio-cultural factors that are modulated by specific neuro-cognitive mechanisms, such as cognitive inhibition.

Supernatural belief is not modulated by intuitive thinking style or cognitive inhibition

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
According to the Intuitive Belief Hypothesis, supernatural belief relies heavily on intuitive thinking—and decreases when analytic thinking is engaged. After pointing out various limitations in prior attempts to support this Intuitive Belief Hypothesis, we test it across three new studies using a variety of paradigms, ranging from a pilgrimage field study to a neurostimulation experiment.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Hearing voices is a prominent symptom of serious mental illness. However, these experiences may be common in the non-help-seeking population. The present research project comprised two studies aimed: (1) To evaluate the varieties of voice-hearing and (2) to evaluate “White Christmas” task in relation with voice-hearing experiences. We compared different groups (N = 200): (i) voice-hearers with and without diagnosable psychotic disorder (DPD) and (ii) non-voice-hearers with and without diagnosable psychotic disorder on Schizotypy, Hallucinations, Paranormal beliefs, Delusions and the Religious/spiritual Engagement.
We found that the hallucinatory experiences of psychic voice-hearers tend to be similar to those of patients with diagnosable psychotic disorder. We also found that the sample of normal people who hear voices are able to control the onset and offset of their voices, they are less distressed by their voice-hearing experiences and the first time they admitted to hear voices, the reception by others was much more likely to be positive. Patients who had much more negative voice-hearing experiences, were more likely to receive a negative reaction when sharing their voices with others for the first time, and this was subsequently more disruptive to their social relationships.
A secondary aim was to compare groups: voice-hearers with (1) and without diagnosable psychotic disorder (2) and non-voice-hearers with (3) and without (4) diagnosable psychotic disorder on “White Christmas” task. The hypothesis was confirmed, that is, Groups 1 and 2 (Voice-hearers with and without diagnosable psychotic disorder) scored higher than Groups 3 and 4 (Non-voice hearers with and without diagnosable psychotic disorder). Groups (i) voice-hearers with and without DPD and (ii) non-voice-hearers with and without DPD, did not differ in terms of imagery vividness and fantasy prone. Logistic regression suggested that fantasy proneness is a better predictor of hallucinatory reports than are LSHS (Hallucination) scores. This might imply that hallucinatory reports obtained during the White Christmas test reflect internal experiences, a non-specific preference for odd items rather than schizophrenia-like.

Final report - The mind possessed project: Mapping the varieties of possession experiences
Publication year: 2022
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Possession experiences are widely reported across cultures and those possessed are often regarded as a channel for spiritual agents.
AIMS
We conducted two studies to investigate the psychological characteristics of individuals who regularly experience possession states, and the varieties of these experiences.
METHOD
Study 1 used a set of personality, cognitive, and mental health measures and compared Umbanda religious participants who regularly experience possession with those who have never experienced possession sates. Study 2 collected possession narratives contrasting individuals from Afro-Brazilian versus Christian Evangelical Pentecostal backgrounds.
RESULTS
Umbanda mediums were no different from a control group across all measures, except for anxiety, where they scored lower than the control group. We also found that the level of fusion with the spiritual entity was a predictor of quality of life. Analysis of possession narratives showed that Afro-Brazilian individuals shared commonalities with Christian Pentecostals but emphasised more changes in self/identity.
CONCLUSIONS
Results suggest that individuals regularly experiencing possession within an Afro-Brazilian religious context are psychologically very similar to others who never experienced the same phenomenon, and that the way they appraise their experiences as meaningful, as well as the level of spiritual fusion, are predictors of wellbeing. In addition, we have found that different religious traditions share many characteristics of possession experience, though their different contexts and beliefs may also moderately shape the diversity and qualities of such experiences.

Psychology and the paranormal: Exploring anomalous experience
Publication year: 2020
URL:
https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/psychology-and-the-paranormal/book268474#description
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The field of research on the paranormal has changed enormously in the last 20 years. Examining experiences of extrasensory perception, psychokinesis, precognition, ganzfeld, dissociative states, out-of-the-body experiences, alien abductions and near-death experiences, the book appraises the best available evidence to date on scientific claims of the paranormal. Each chapter also provides a description of the psychological processes that are likely to contribute to these experiences, and to the high prevalence of paranormal beliefs. Importantly, this book does not take a fixed sceptical or 'disbelieving' view of the phenomena but, as far as possible, offers a neutral gaze which will equip readers to make up their own minds, as well as providing them with the critical skills to defend their conclusions. The book is in four parts. Part I is about basic principles, theories and processes. It defines the field of this survey as the 'science of anomaly'; presents a new integrative review and theory of paranormal experience; and discusses some of the key psychological processes that increase our understanding of anomalous experiences and beliefs. Part II is concerned with empirical and theoretical perspectives on some of the best known 'classic' subjective anomalous phenomena that are claimed to be paranormal. Part III concerns three subjectively anomalous experiences that are usually not given paranormal interpretations: the Hypnotic Trance State, Out-Of-Body Experience (OBE) and Near Death Experience (NDE). Part IV provides a conclusion and 'take-home message'. Finally, an Appendix provides concepts, methods and measures which should be helpful to readers wishing to embark upon studies of their own. It is helpful to look at the general terrain of 'anomalistic psychology' both subjective paranormal experiences (SPEs) that are claimed by some authorities to be paranormal and other SPEs not generally claimed to be paranormal, with intriguing differences between the two.
