History:
The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
In the area of Parapsychology, the experiences of Prof. Rhine were decisive, as well as the one of Pratt and Woodruf. The study of certain individuals having the ability to foresee stochastic events, were studied intensely in its statistical slope.
This Project of Investigation sought to repeat the classical tests, introducing a new study element: the variations of the cerebral waves Alpha, Beta and Theta (7,9/13 Hz - 3,9/7,9 Hz - 13/20 Hz), and the use of disturbance factors: a generator of high-frequency electric field (Tesla type), a radio-frequency generator and an audio-frequency generator.
237 validated experiments were taken, with a margin of experimental error estimated in 6,5%. This study suggests that special phenomena of foreseeing don't exist, if the subject doesn't surpass a rate of successes of 40%. The introduced disturbance factors didn't have relevance in the aspects of radio-frequency and audio, not representing the distributions, private variations. On the other hand, the generator of electrical field shows that the subject can be driven to a state of “confusion” that turns him unable to obtain normal results. In this matter, the curve without interference’s possesses a maximum at 20% of successes, and with the interference, it possesses a maximum in 8% of successes.
This findings reveal an unsuspected probability of a “psi-missing” factor in the presence of an electrical alternate field (30 KV/10 KHz at 1 m).

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
1. Psychoneurophysiology (placebo/suggestion versus therapeutic/ interactive technique):
a) EEG
- There was a significative decrease of the alpha/ theta ratio in the placebo sessions compared to the therapeutic sessions (increasing theta activity in both hemispheres, with compensatory decreasing alpha amplitude).
- There are no significative differences in the left/ right hemisphere relation in both sessions
- It seemed that cure depends on the amount of theta activity during the session (at least 30% of the total).
- Comparing alpha/ beta ratio between both types of sessions no significative differences were found
b) Skin conductance - no significative differences found
c) Superficial muscle activity (EMG) - no significative differences found
d) Plethysmography
- no significative differences concerning pulse frequency;
- there is significative increase of pulse amplitude during therapeutic sessions
e) Placebo and therapeutic sessions are clearly separated from a neurophysiological point of view and both differentiate from sleep and dream
f) Though clusters of patients were not found in either session, patients neurophysiologically resemble each other in the therapeutic sessions
2. Therapeutic results
Evaluated six months after the end of the treatment a third of the patients had completely stopped using daily analgesics as they did before. Other third significantly reduce headache frequency and intensity. The remaining showed no differences to the former state. It was felt that two therapeutic sessions were not enough in order to have better results.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Student volunteers from a Portuguese university (N=217) completed two inventories: Personal Belief System and Attitudes towards Meditation. A subset (N=78) completed a laboratory study of physiological response to meditative prayer. Half of the subjects meditated with a neutral, sub-vocal, mental device, then shifted to a mental device consistent with the individual's belief system. Half reversed the order. EEG and skin conductance data were recorded as well as subjective reaction to the meditation.
It was theorized, following the work of Benson (1996), that the use of a belief system-consistent device would elicit states of repose more profound than those elicited with a neutral device.
In the second half of the experiment, the group using the belief system-consistent device showed a marked increase in alpha activity. Both subjects with strong religious and non-religious components in their personal belief systems reported more positive feelings toward the meditation experience.
Correlational evidence suggests an individual difference factor: A possible trait of high and low alpha-emitting groups emerges after a period of 8-9 minutes in the relaxed state brought on by the Benson technique. The high alpha group displayed externality of causality and a greater religious component in their belief systems.
The evidence suggests that the technique of meditative prayer may be a useful therapeutic tool to assuage the cognition-emotion-stress link. The existence of a strong personal belief system—religious or non-religious—seems fundamental to the efficacy of this coping mechanism. Major limiting factors may include the necessity to practice the technique and a possible trait predisposition for the benefits of the technique.

A meta-analysis of forced-choice experiments comparing clairvoyance and precognition
Publication year: 1998

http://www.biomedsearch.com/article/meta-analysis-forced-choice-experiments/54194992.html
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This meta-analysis examined a database of studies published in the main parapsychology journals from 1935-1997 that compared outcomes of precognition and clairvoyance trials under relatively similar experimental conditions. Both the precognition and clairvoyance studies had a statistically significant cumulated overall effect but there was no evidence to suggest that clairvoyance worked better than precognition, with the mean effect sizes (z/[N.sup.1/2]) of the two types of ESP in the 22 study pairs being very similar at 0.010 for precognition and 0.009 for clairvoyance. There were no statistically significant correlations between the presence of procedural safeguards and effect size and hence no suggestion that methodological problems had played any strong and obvious role in the overall effects, although the small database would be expected to provide relatively low statistical power for detecting any such effects. None of the planned analyses examining the effects of potential moderator variables upon effect size were statistically significant but a post-hoc ANOVA indicated a statistically significant interaction, F (1, 16) = 15.04, p = .001. between whether the trials were precognitive or clairvoyant and how the two types of trial were interspersed (separated into studies or mixed within a study). Being a post-hoc result and one of many analyses performed, this finding may not be meaningful. Equally, however, the general lack of significant findings does not conclusively indicate a lack of genuine relationships, given the low statistical power in the database. In case low power had in fact been a problem in identifying moderator variables, contrast between groups in effect size alone, regardless of the statistical significance of the difference was used as a criterion to identify promising variables to examine or exploit in future research. These variables and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Testing clairvoyance and precognition by manipulating probabilities: A conceptual assessment of the experimental literature

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This paper reviews six clairvoyance experiments and two precognition ones. In essence, all eight studies use an unbalanced deck of some kind in which one or more items in the deck (will) appear more frequently than others. Traditionally, results from the six clairvoyance experiments have been thought to support each other; the current assessment, however, reveals that the findings are not as complementary as might first be imagined. Although all authors believe that psi operates globally in their experiments by scanning the whole target set, at least four different models are offered to explain how global psi might work. None of these models can explain all the results. A review of the two precognition experiments reveals that they fail to address the questions they sought to answer. Moreover, if global psi extends over time as well as space, the variety of models used to explain the clairvoyance studies may also be pertinent to the precognition experiments. A number of potential research questions are identified and a series of experiments is devised to answer the question of whether precognition foresees events that will be or whether it looks forward to what will be decided. It is hoped that this review will promote more conceptually rigorous research.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Publication year: 2000

http://connection.ebscohost.com/c/articles/24447891/does-precognition-foresee-future-series-4-postal-replication
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The study reported here is a replication of a previous postal study examining the possibility of true precognition. The previous study (Steinkamp, 2000) revealed chance results for true precognition but significant results for the clairvoyance condition. However, a similar study in the laboratory (Steinkamp, 2001) yielded almost significant results for true precognition. The replication study reported here tried to emulate the conditions in the laboratory but in the setting of a postal study. For instance, this time participants were given a relaxation tape to help them get in the right frame of mind for the experiment and they were not sent their target pool until after they had submitted their mentation reports. Results from the study were at chance. There was no obvious indication that participants' putative lack of motivation might have influenced the outcome. Also, participants who reported having had psychic experiences did not perform any better than those claiming no such experience. It appears that either postal experiments are not suitable for eliciting evidence for true precognition, or, if true precognition is possible, it can occur only with a much shorter precognitive interval than these experiments have allowed.

Contents: RESULTS:
Over two thirds of the sample (N= 432) reported telepathy experiences, ESP dreams, out-of-body experiences, and many forms of spiritual contacts. Two thirds indicated that their experiences had been conflictive, although also indicated never to have consulted. Those who did, pointed out that relatives and friends were the persons most consulted. We compared them with a sample of students (N= 392) using the t test. An average significantly greater of experiences in our sample than the one for the students (Mean= 6.12 vs. 3.19, pdif <.0001). We also found that they felt more spiritual than that of the students (U of Mann-Whitney, p <.0001, one tail), but that it does not influence the experiences in our sample. The students’ spirituality correlates positively and significantly with the report of experiences such as perception of lights/energies, and out-of-body experiences (p<.0001).
The emotional reactions towards anomalous experiences was explored in two studies using sub-sample of the first sample. The first one, three third parts (N= 32) put emphasis on many types of fear. Wonder, perplexity, well-being, and anxiety also were reported. The score of conflictivity decreased significantly (4.85 to 1.70). The group activity enhanced their personal or spiritual development, others found a new meaning for their psi experiences, or feeling emotionally better, better interpersonal relationships, and new meaning in their life. The second one reports the results of psychometric tests. The results did not indicate abnormal traits nor dissociation. The sample is emotionally stable and introverted. As sample, they obtained a high-scored schizophrenia and hypochodriasis (code 8-1) and maniacal over schyzoids defense mechanisms.

Estudio exploratorio de las características de personalidad, psicopatología, inteligencia y mecanismos de defensa de sujetos que reportan experiencias paranormales espontáneas
Publication year: 2004
Abstract/Results:
