Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Acquisition of new perceptual-motor skills depends on multiple brain areas, including the striatum. However, the specific contribution of each structure to this type of learning is still poorly understood. Focusing on the striatum, we proposed (a) to replicate the finding of impaired rotary pursuit (RP) and preserved mirror tracing (MT) in Huntington's disease (HD); and (b) to further explore this putative learning dissociation with other human models of striatal dysfunction (i.e., Parkinson's disease and focal vascular damage) and two new paradigms (i.e., Geometric Figures, GF, and Control Stick, CS) of skill learning. Regardless of the etiology, participants with damage to the striatum showed impaired learning of visuomotor tracking skills (i.e., RP and GF), whereas the ability to learn skills that require motor adaptation (i.e., MT and CS) was not affected. These results suggest a task-specific involvement of the striatum in the early stages of skill learning.

Motion processing involves multiple hierarchical steps, from the magnocellular pathway, sensitive to high temporal frequency modulations, to subsequent motion integration within the visual cortical dorsal stream. We have tested whether motion integration deficits in mild Parkinson disease (PD) can be explained by visual deficits in earlier processing nodes. Contrast sensitivity deficits in the magnocellular pathway, were compared with speed discrimination of local dots moving in random directions, speed and direction discrimination of moving surfaces and motion integration as measured by 2D coherence thresholds (n=27). We have found that low-level magnocellular impairment in PD does not explain deficits in subsequent steps in motion processing. High-level performance was abnormal in particular for tasks requiring perception of coherently moving surfaces. Motion coherence deficits were predictive of visuomotor impairment, corroborating a previous magnetic stimulation study in normal subjects. We conclude that dorsal stream deficits in PD have a high-level visual cortical basis independent of low-level magnocellular damage.

Sensory deficits have been documented in Parkinson's disease, in particular within the visual domain. However, ageing factors related to the brain and to neural and non-neural ocular structures could explain some of the previously reported results, in particular the claimed impairment within the koniocellular pathway. This study addressed visual impairment attributable to the magno- (luminance), parvo- (red-green) and koniocellular (blue-yellow) pathways in a population of Parkinson's disease patients. To avoid potentially confounding factors, all subjects underwent a full neurophthalmological assessment which led to exclusion of subjects with increased intraocular pressure, diabetes even in the absence of retinopathy, and ocular abnormalities (from a total of 72 patients' eyes, 12 were excluded). Both parvo- and koniocellular pathways were studied by means of contrast sensitivity (CS) measurements along protan, tritan and deutan axes and also by fitting chromatic discrimination ellipses using eight measured contrast axes. Magnocellular function was assessed, using stimuli that induce a frequency doubling illusion, in 17 locations in the fovea and periphery. Achromatic (luminance modulation) thresholds were significantly higher in Parkinson's disease both in foveal and peripheral locations. A significant impairment was observed along protan and deutan axes, but only marginally along the tritan axis. These results were corroborated by a significant elongation of chromatic discrimination ellipses in our Parkinson's disease group. Correlation analysis showed that achromatic and chromatic CS measures were independent, which implies that multiple visual pathways are affected independently in Parkinson's disease. Magnocellular impairment was significantly correlated with age and disease stage, in contrast to the measured chromatic deficits. We conclude that in Parkinson's disease, independent damage occurs in the early magno- and parvocellular pathways. Furthermore, traditional koniocellular probing strategies in Parkinson's disease may be confounded by ageing factors, which may reconcile the previously reported controversial findings concerning chromatic impairment in Parkinson's disease.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Studies concerning time perception lack a validated assessment tool and a consensual “gold-standard” measure. Moreover, the present evidence suggests modification of timing with aging. This study aimed to develop and validate a neuropsychological tool to measure time perception and to study temporal perception with aging. Eighty-six healthy subjects, aged 15-90 years-old, were asked to verbally estimate and produce empty intervals signaled by auditory beeps, of 7, 32 and 58 seconds duration. Two tests were used as “gold-standards”: estimating the duration of time necessary to draw a clock (“clock time”) and estimation of the duration of neuropsychological evaluation (“global time”). Results showed a correlation between estimation and production (p<0.01) and a correlation between estimation or production and “global time” (p<0.01). The
correlation between either estimation or production and age (p<0.01), indicated a faster “internal-clock” with aging. A comparison between three age groups (15-40 yrs-old; 41-64 yrs-old; 65-90 yrs-old) showed a trend toward time overestimation and underproduction with older age, reaching significance between the extreme age groups (p< 0.05). The results suggest that these tests are potentially a useful tool to measure the subjective perception of time and corroborate the hypothesis of an acceleration of “internal-clock” with aging. In other study, ten patients with Parkinson`s disease and “wearing-off” and no dementia performed
the above tasks for time estimation and production; patients were evaluated in the “ON” and “OFF” stage. We found no difference between patients and controls. In a sub-group analysis, two different behaviors emerged: a subgroup of patients had a faster “internal-clock” during “ON” stage while other had a faster “internal-clock” off levodopa, but this difference did not reach statistical significance. Further studies are needed to investigate the role of dopamine in time perception.

This book is a comprehensive overview of the main current concepts in brain cognitive activities at the global, collective (or network) level, with a focus on transitions between normal neurophysiology and brain pathological states. It provides a unique approach of linking molecular and cellular aspects of normal and pathological brain functioning with their corresponding network, collective and dynamical manifestations that are subsequently extended to behavioral manifestations of healthy and diseased brains. This book introduces a high-level perspective, searching for simplification amongst the structural and functional complexity of nervous systems by consideration of the distributed interactions that underlie the collective behavior of the system. The authors hope that this approach could promote a global comprehensive understanding of high-level laws behind the elementary biological processes in the neuroscientific community, while, perhaps, introducing elements of biological complexities to the mathematical/computational readership. The title of the book refers to the main point of the monograph: that there is a smooth continuum between distinct brain activities resulting in different behaviors, and that, due to the plastic nature of the brain, the behavior can also alter the brain function, thus rendering artificial the boundaries between the brain and its behavior.

Visual deficits in early and high level processing nodes have been documented in Parkinson's disease (PD). Non-motor high level visual integration deficits in PD seem to have a cortical basis independently of a low level retinal contribution. It is however an open question whether sensory and visual attention deficits can be separated in PD. Here, we have explicitly separated visual and attentional disease related patterns of performance, by using bias free staircase procedures measuring psychophysical contrast sensitivity across visual space under covert attention conditions with distinct types of cues (valid, neutral and invalid). This further enabled the analysis of patterns of dorsal-ventral (up-down) and physiological inter-hemispheric asymmetries. We have found that under these carefully controlled covert attention conditions PD subjects show impaired psychophysical performance enhancement by valid attentional cues. Interestingly, PD patients also show paradoxically increased visual homogeneity of spatial performance profiles, suggesting flattening of high level modulation of spatial attention. Finally we have found impaired higher level attentional modulation of contrast sensitivity in the visual periphery, where mechanisms of covert attention are at higher demands. These findings demonstrate a specific loss of attentional mechanisms in PD and a pathological redistribution of spatial mechanisms of covert attention.

Motion processing involves multiple hierarchical steps, from the magnocellular pathway, sensitive to high temporal frequency modulations, to subsequent motion integration within the visual cortical dorsal stream. We have tested whether motion integration deficits in mild Parkinson disease (PD) can be explained by visual deficits in earlier processing nodes. Contrast sensitivity deficits in the magnocellular pathway, were compared with speed discrimination of local dots moving in random directions, speed and direction discrimination of moving surfaces and motion integration as measured by 2D coherence thresholds (n = 27). We have found that low-level magnocellular impairment in PD does not explain deficits in subsequent steps in motion processing. High-level performance was abnormal in particular for tasks requiring perception of coherently moving surfaces. Motion coherence deficits were predictive of visuomotor impairment, corroborating a previous magnetic stimulation study in normal subjects. We conclude that dorsal stream deficits in PD have a high-level visual cortical basis independent of low-level magnocellular damage.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
During this research project (73/06) we investigated the mechanism underlying implicit contextual learning as well as its neural correlates. Implicit contextual cueing is a learning mechanism in which visual information from our environment is memorized in order to facilitate visual search.
In the first part of our research project we studied the mechanism underlying implicit contextual cueing using eye movement recording. First, we showed that peripheral vision can be used to memorize the context of a target (Van Asselen et al. 2009), whereas in our following study we demonstrated that object-based contextual cueing is associated with shorter fixation durations (Van Asselen et al., 2010). Finally, we showed that when two contextual cues are presented simultaneously, the contextual cueing effect is much larger than when one cue is presented. This effect is associated with fewer fixations and shorter saccade amplitudes, suggesting that a different search strategy is used.
In the second part of this research project we aimed to look at the neural basis of implicit contextual cueing. Therefore, we tested patients with Huntington’s and Parkinson’s disease with a contextual cueing task and found that these patients are not able to benefit from the repeated contextual information (Van Asselen et al., 2009). Since both of these neurodegenerative diseases affect the basal ganglia, our findings suggest an important role for this brain area. Finally, by using fMRI we demonstrated that the exact neural network that is involved in implicit contextual cueing depends on the type of cues (object or spatial) that are used to guide attention.

Implicit contextual learning refers to the ability to memorize contextual information from our environment. This contextual information can then be used to guide our attention to a specific location. Although the medial temporal lobe is important for this type of learning, the basal ganglia might also be involved considering its role in many implicit learning processes. In order to understand the role of the basal ganglia in this top-down process, a group of non-demented early-stage Parkinson's patients were tested with a contextual cueing task. In this visual search task, subjects have to quickly locate a target among a number of distractors. To test implicit contextual learning, some of the configurations are repeated during the experiment, resulting in faster responses. A significant interaction effect was found between Group and Configuration, indicating that the control subjects responded faster when the spatial context was repeated, whereas Parkinson's patients failed to do so. These results, showing that the contextual cueing effect was significantly different for the patients than for the controls, suggest an important role for the basal ganglia in implicit contextual learning, thus extending previous findings of medial temporal lobe involvement. The basal ganglia are therefore not only involved in implicit motor learning, but may also have a role in purely visual implicit learning.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES: One of the design features of humans is that we can perceive emotions in spoken language and in music. Here we investigate the neurocognitive mechanisms through which primary emotions such as happiness or fear are recognized in speech prosody and in short musical excerpts, with an emphasis on the question of what is common across domains and what differs.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In Study [1], we developed and validated a database of spoken sentences and pseudo-sentences designed to express by prosody alone anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, surprise and neutrality . In Study [2], we tested younger and older adults in the recognition of two positive and two negative emotions in music; accuracy for happiness and peacefulness remained stable, but accuracy for fear and sadness decreased from middle-age onwards; a serendipitous finding was that music training modulated recognition accuracy. In Study [3], we compared Parkinson’s disease patients with age matched controls in the recognition of the same or equivalent emotions in speech prosody (using materials developed in Study 1) and in music (with materials selected on the basis of Study 2), and found a dissociation between domains:
patients were impaired for positive emotions in music but not in speech, and for sadness in speech but not in music. The impairment for music was not associated with perceptual or cognitive dysfunctions, but the impairment for speech correlated with executive dysfunction. This is evidence that emotion processing in speech prosody and music is probably sustained by partially segregated mechanisms. The role of musical training on emotion recognition was followed up in two further studies where musicians and musically naive listeners were compared. In study [4], we found a cross-domain transfer: musicians recognized emotions in speech more accurately than musically naive listeners. In study [5], we found that musical training was positively correlated with the recognition of emotions in music.
CONCLUSIONS AND DISCUSSION: Taken together, these findings support the view that neurocognitive mechanisms subtending the recognition of emotional expressions are partly shared, and partly segregated, in speech and in music.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.
