BACKGROUND:
Individuals with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) experience atypical visual perception, yet the etiology of this remains unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the neural correlates of visual perception in individuals with and without ASD by carrying out a detailed analysis of the dynamic brain processes elicited by perception of a simple visual stimulus.
METHODS:
We investigated perception in 20 individuals with ASD and 20 control subjects with electroencephalography (EEG). Visual evoked potentials elicited by Gabor patches of varying spatial frequency and stimulus-induced changes in a- and ?-frequency bands of independent components were compared in those with and without ASD.
RESULTS:
By decomposing the EEG data into independent components, we identified several processes that contributed to the average event related potential recorded at the scalp. Differences between the ASD and control groups were found only in some of these processes. Specifically, in those components that were in or near the striate or extrastriate cortex, stimulus spatial frequency exerted a smaller effect on induced increases in a- and ?-band power, and time to peak a-band power was reduced, in the participants with ASD. Induced a-band power of components that were in or near the cingulate gyrus was increased in the participants with ASD, and the components that were in or near the parietal cortex did not differ between the two groups.
CONCLUSION:
Atypical processing is evident in individuals with ASD during perception of simple visual stimuli. The implications of these data for existing theories of atypical perception in ASD are discussed.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
1. Activity in hMT+/V5 (the human motion complex) is related to the perception of real surface motion, apparent motion (AM), and illusory motion aftereffects (MAE). We have found that the network within hMT+ that creates a continuous motion percept from discontinuous inputs can interact constructively with the network that integrates real moving surfaces and destructively with MAE processing.
2. We have found that the hMT complex directly encodes and triggers decision processes related to surface segmentation, even when perception is dissociated from veridical stimulus properties.
3. Visual surface integration is asymmetrically modulated by contextual surround coherence: we asked observers to report whether they perceived transparent or non-transparent surface motion under multiple contexts. Surprisingly, only transparently perceived surrounds induced significant perceptually congruent central bias, thereby vetoing motion integration. These results are consistent with findings suggesting partially separable and hierarchically distinct neurophysiological substrates of pattern (non-transparent) and component (transparent) motion processes.
4. Genetically determined neuroretinal impairment in Williams Syndrome predicts systems-level deficits independently of cortical dorsal stream integration deficits: our findings of independent mechanisms of damage in WS that explain separate sensory contrast sensitivity and local motion deficits, challenge theories that explain coherence deficits based on magnocellular impairment, such as in dyslexia.
6. Our work separates for the first time retinal and cortical mechanisms underlying visual functional asymmetries : and shows that they are distinct in temporal and spatial vision.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Purpose - To study how central visual motion integration and segmentation processes are influenced by the congruence or incongruence of peripheral contextual moving surrounds and to determine their clinical relevance.
Methods - Nine subjects participated in experiments 1 and 2 (12-second blocks containing 2-second static fixation and 10-second surface plaid movement) and 15 in experiment 3 (72-second blocks, with 12-second fixation, and 60-second motion). Observers reported whether they perceived nontransparent (corresponding to visual integration of motion cues into one surface) or transparent (segmentation of two surfaces from motion cues) plaid motion within a 5 degrees central circular region. Surround stimuli were 20 degrees transparent or nontransparent moving plaids.
Results -Contextual effects required the presence of both local and global ambiguity. If central local motion became unambiguous, then surrounds became ineffective. Under local and global ambiguity, transparent surrounds invariably induced central congruence while also strongly suppressing incongruent percepts. Nontransparent surrounds produced similar but less consistent congruent bias, especially for longer viewing times. In the latter case, however, suppression of incongruent central interpretations became barely detectable compared to the observed significant facilitation of congruent percepts.
Conclusions - Local ambiguity is critical in contextual modulation, and the peripheral enhancement or suppression of central motion integration depends both on transparency bias and center-surround congruence. The importance of local ambiguity in contextual modulation is clinically relevant, because it implies that contextual effects will be stronger in disorders with impaired central vision, such as macular degeneration. Moreover, the increased efficacy of global context under conditions of increased local ambiguity may be useful in future rehabilitation approaches.

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), a neurodevelopmental genetic disorder whose manifestations include visuospatial impairment, provides a unique model to link genetically determined loss of neural cell populations at different levels of the nervous system with neural circuits and visual behavior. Given that several of the genes deleted in WBS are also involved in eye development and the differentiation of retinal layers, we examined the retinal phenotype in WBS patients and its functional relation to global motion perception. We discovered a low-level visual phenotype characterized by decreased retinal thickness, abnormal optic disk concavity, and impaired visual responses in WBS patients compared with age-matched controls by using electrophysiology, confocal and coherence in vivo imaging with cellular resolution, and psychophysics. These mechanisms of impairment are related to the magnocellular pathway, which is involved in the detection of temporal changes in the visual scene. Low-level magnocellular performance did not predict high-level deficits in the integration of motion and 3D information at higher levels, thereby demonstrating independent mechanisms of dysfunction in WBS that will require remediation strategies different from those used in other visuospatial disorders. These findings challenge neurodevelopmental theories that explain cortical deficits based on low-level magnocellular impairment, such as regarding dyslexia.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In cat visual cortex, we investigated with parallel recordings from multiple units the neuronal correlates of perceived brightness. The perceived brightness of a center grating was changed by varying the orientation or the relative spatial phase of a surrounding grating. Brightness enhancement by orientation contrast is associated with an increase of discharge rates of responses to the center grating but not with changes in spike synchronization. In contrast, if brightness enhancement is induced by phase offset, discharge rates are unchanged but synchronization increases between neurons responding to the center grating. The changes in synchronization correlate well with changes in perceived brightness that were assessed in parallel in human subjects using the same stimuli. These results indicate that in cerebral cortex the modulation of synchronicity of responses is used as a mechanism complementary to rate changes to enhance the saliency of neuronal responses.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
We report here retinotopically based magnocellular deficits in a patient with a unilateral parieto-occipital lesion. We applied convergent methodologies to study his dorsal stream processing, using psychophysics as well as structural and functional imaging. Using standard perimetry we found deficits involving the periphery of the left inferior quadrant abutting the horizontal meridian, suggesting damage of dorsal retinotopic representations beyond V1. Retinotopic damage was much more extensive when probed with frequency-doubling based contrast sensitivity measurements, which isolate processing within the magnocellular pathway: sensitivity losses now encroached on the visual central representation and did not respect the horizontal meridian, suggesting further damage to dorsal stream retinotopic areas that contain full hemi-field representations, such as human V3A or V6. Functional imaging revealed normal responses of human MT+ to motion contrast. Taken together, these findings are consistent with a recent proposal of two distinct magnocellular dorsal stream pathways: a latero-dorsal pathway passing to MT+ and concerned with the processing of coherent motion, and a medio-dorsal pathway that routes information from V3A to the human homologue of V6. Anatomical evidence was consistent with sparing of the latero-dorsal pathway in our patient, and was corroborated by his normal performance in speed, direction discrimination and motion coherence tasks with 2D and 3D objects. His pattern of dysfunction suggests damage only to the medio-dorsal pathway, an inference that is consistent with structural imaging data, which revealed a lesion encompassing the right parieto-occipital sulcus.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
There are reports of atypical visual perception in individuals with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) meaning that they perceive the world differently to typical observers. It remains unclear whether atypical perception reflects abnormality in the visual system, i.e. bottom-up processes, or in higher level cognition and information processing biases, i.e. top-down processes. The aim of this study was to investigate basic visual perception in participants with autistic spectrum disorder by measuring the visual evoked potentials elicited by simple visual stimuli in 20 children /adolescents with autistic spectrum disorder and 20 typically developing controls. We predicted, based on existing literature, that low frequencies will be specifically
atypical in autism and that high spatial frequencies may be intact. The VEP elicited by Gabor patches presented at different spatial frequencies was measured (0.5 – 8 cycles/°). We found significant differences in the VEP elicited in the two groups. Specifically, the latency to peak was faster in the children with ASD than in the controls, and the amplitude of the C1 component was reduced in the majority of children with ASD. These data provide evidence of abnormality at a very early stage of visual processing in ASD, possibly at the level of V1. The finding reported here reflects the fact that 61.2% of the participants with autism did not have a negative component in their waveforms. This lack of C1 in some participants does not appear to correlate with age, IQ, severity of symptoms (as measured by the ASQ & CARS) or behavioural performance. It is now crucial to determine if such impairment influences the development of social cognitive functions such as face processing.

BACKGROUND:
Individuals with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) experience atypical visual perception, yet the etiology of this remains unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the neural correlates of visual perception in individuals with and without ASD by carrying out a detailed analysis of the dynamic brain processes elicited by perception of a simple visual stimulus.
METHODS:
We investigated perception in 20 individuals with ASD and 20 control subjects with electroencephalograph(EEG). Visual evoked potentials elicited by Gabor patches of varying spatial frequency and stimulus-induced changes in a- and ?-frequency bands of independent components were compared in those with and without ASD.
RESULTS:
By decomposing the EEG data into independent components, we identified several processes that contributed to the average event related potential recorded at the scalp. Differences between the ASD and control groups were found only in some of these processes. Specifically, in those components that were in or near the striate or extrastriate cortex, stimulus spatial frequency exerted a smaller effect on induced increases in a- and ?-band power, and time to peak a-band power was reduced, in the participants with ASD. Induced a-band power of components that were in or near the cingulate gyrus was increased in the participants with ASD, and the components that were in or near the parietal cortex did not differ between the two groups.
CONCLUSIONS:
Atypical processing is evident in individuals with ASD during perception of simple visual stimuli. The implications of these data for existing theories of atypical perception in ASD are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) use the same cognitive strategies as typically developing individuals when processing eye-gaze direction. Subjects viewed pictures of whole faces, the eye region alone, and pairs of arrows presented for 40, 70, or 100 ms, and responded according to the direction the eyes were looking or the arrows pointing (left, right, or straight ahead). Experiment 1 demonstrated that typically developing adults (n = 41) were more accurate and showed shorter reaction times when judging direction of averted eye gaze in the context of the whole face than when only the eyes were visible (eye-region-alone condition). Furthermore, in the eye-region-alone condition participants were more accurate and faster at judging direct eye gaze than averted eye gaze. The same task was used in experiment 2 to compare the performance of a group of individuals with ASD (n = 24) with that of a group of IQ-matched typically developing individuals (n = 26). The performance of the control participants was identical to that observed in experiment 1. Individuals with ASD were able to judge eye-gaze direction accurately at short exposure duration; however, they failed to show the typical advantage for judging averted gaze in whole faces and the increased sensitivity to direct gaze in the eye-region-alone condition. The findings are discussed in terms of impairments to discrete gaze-processing and face-processing mechanisms, and the connectivity between these mechanisms.

In this paper we present a method for participant classification, based on trait and state, in the experimental evaluation of ESP (extrasensory perception). We conducted three Ganzfeld experiments with a sample of 237 participants. In experiment I (N = 60) twenty participants ranked the target stimulus in the first position, achieving a non-significant rate of correct guesses of 33.3% (z = 1.48, p = .07, one tailed). In experiment II (N = 90) only 26.6% of the participants’ guesses were correct (z = .35, p = .36, one tailed). Weighting trials in the second experiment on the basis of the most successful predictors of the participants’ performance in the first experiment increased the rate of correct guesses from 26.6% to 36.4%. Results in a confirmatory experiment (N = 87) were not significant (32.7%, z = 1.32, p = .09, one tailed). However, overall results in this study were consistent with the effects sizes data reported in previous meta-analyses.

History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Data of 41 healthy subjects, 14 volunteers, exposed to dry immersion (DI) and 19 schizophrenic patients were analyzed. Healthy subjects were right-handed males with right (RE) and left (LE) eye dominance, and patients had RE dominance. 2 modifications of antisaccadic task were used. In A1 task fixation period was 800-1000 ms, and in A2 task – 1200-1400 ms. EEG was recorded from 19 sites. Mean amplitude of slow cortical negative potentials (SN) time-locked to peripheral cue onset was evaluated. The saccade characteristics did not depend on task and experimental conditions in healthy RE subjects. In LE subjects percent of errors was lower in A2 task than in A1 one, and increase of errors and saccade latencies was revealed after exposure to DI. Patients performed A2 task better than A1 one, but they exhibited delays in performance of correct saccades and larger number of errors in both tasks compared to healthy subjects. RE subjects demonstrated high level of frontal activation before antisaccades in both tasks. Reduced SN amplitude in frontal region was revealed in LE subjects. The most pronounced decline of SN amplitude in frontal regions was found in patients. Predominant left hemisphere activation was observed during the last 200 ms before peripheral cue in all groups. Changes in cortical activity after DI were similar in RE and LE groups: SN amplitude decreased, and foci of negativity shifted to the right hemisphere. Thus, obtained results (1) support the neurodevelopmental model of cerebral lateralization, (2) demonstrate the independence of basic hemisphere specialization from eyedness, (3) corroborate the important role of frontal disorders in genesis of schizophrenia.
