The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
There is evidence that damage to the basal ganglia impairs acquisition of perceptual-motor skills. The data have come primarily from studies of patients with neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson’s and Huntington’s Disease), and have relied on a limited number of laboratory tasks (i.e., Serial Reaction Time Test, Rotor Pursuit, Mirror Tracing). The goal of this study was to further explore the impairments of procedural memory that result from basal ganglia dysfunction, by examining the performances of subjects with focal lesions in this region on a new set of procedural memory tasks. The performances of 8 subjects with unilateral basal ganglia vascular lesions (2 left; 6 right) were compared to 25 normal control subjects on 5 new laboratory-controlled tasks based on real world activities, encompassing a range of perceptual-motor requirements. The tasks were administered in two time periods (Time 1 and Time 2 - 24 hours). The 1st task consisted of pressing a sequence of 5 buttons without visual guidance. The 2nd task consisted of manually tracking constant series of 8 target locations using a joystick. The 3rd task consisted of weaving fabric with an actual loom, by performing a recurrent 5-step routine. The 4th consisted of tracing moving geometric figures with a stylus on a touch screen monitor. The 5th consisted of pouring water from a small watering can into graduated containers, from a point at 20cm distance. The basal ganglia group showed a trend toward reduced acquisition and/or retention on 4 of the 5 tasks (all except the 2nd task), relative to the control group, but the differences between groups were statistically nonsignificant. Each basal ganglia subject showed impaired acquisition and/or retention on at least one of the tasks. The findings provide further evidence for impairment of perceptual-motor skill learning and retention following basal ganglia damage, and suggest that lesion and patient characteristics may influence expression of the impairment.

Este estudo teve como objectivo explorar o papel das características demográficas na execução e aprendizagem de competências, previamente demonstradas como não dependentes do sistema límbico. Cem sujeitos Portugueses sem história de doença neurológica ou psiquiátrica com idades entre 18 e 74 anos (média=39.05, dp=14.25) realizaram cinco testes de memória de procedimentos: mirror tracing, rotary pursuit, control stick, spatial sequence e gramática artificial. Este grupo demonstrou: 1) aprendizagem de uma gramática artificial; e 2) melhorias na execução de todas as tarefas perceptivo-motoras em função da prática. A idade e a escolaridade correlacionaram-se com o nível de execução das tarefas, mas não com o índice de aprendizagem das competências perceptivo-motoras.

In the human lesion literature, most of the support to the involvement of the basal ganglia in skill learning comes from studies with Parkinson's disease or Huntington’s disease. Only a limited number of studies have used stroke patients to explore the role of basal ganglia in perceptual-motor skill learning. An additional major limitation of studies to date is a near complete reliance on a few laboratory tasks. These limitations stand in the way of clearly identify the involvement of the basal ganglia in skill learning. The behavioral performance of twelve subjects with focal unilateral basal ganglia damage provided strong support to the hypothesis that individuals with Basal Ganglia damage would have reduced acquisition of perceptual-motor skills when compared to healthy subjects. However, this impairment was found to be task specific. The Basal Ganglia subjects were able to learn new explicit sequences of hand movements and were also able to learn a new relationship between perceptual cues and motor responses, but were unable to show significant improvement on tasks that entailed an ongoing prediction and adjustment of the motor program, and delayed feedback about errors. This learning impairment was found in the presence of normal motor execution of the tasks. From a basic cognitive neuroscience standpoint, the systematic investigation of the performance of diverse groups of patients with focal brain lesions on a series of perceptual-motor tasks has implications for understanding the neuropsychological mechanisms underlying skill learning.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Prior research has identified the lateral occipital complex (LOC) as a critical cortical region for the representation of object shape in humans. However, little is known about the nature of the representations contained in the LOC and their relationship to the perceptual experience of shape. We used human functional MRI to measure the physical, behavioral, and neural similarity between pairs of novel shapes to ask whether the representations of shape contained in subregions of the LOC more closely reflect the physical stimuli themselves, or the perceptual experience of those stimuli. Perceptual similarity measures for each pair of shapes were obtained from a psychophysical same-different task; physical similarity measures were based on stimulus parameters; and neural similarity measures were obtained from multivoxel pattern analysis methods applied to anterior LOC (pFs) and posterior LOC (LO). We found that the pattern of pairwise shape similarities in LO most closely matched physical shape similarities, whereas shape similarities in pFs most closely matched perceptual shape similarities. Further, shape representations were similar across participants in LO but highly variable across participants in pFs. Together, these findings indicate that activation patterns in subregions of object-selective cortex encode objects according to a hierarchy, with stimulus-based representations in posterior regions and subjective and observer-specific representations in anterior regions.
