ABSTRACT:
The objective of this research was to analyse the impact of tool-use in a social interaction as well as the effect it creates in perceptive distances estimation. We conducted two different experiments. In the first experiment, we evaluate the modification of interpersonal distances in passive condition with 21 participants using the Stop-distances paradigm. The participants were asked to judge the level of comfort when the stimulus (point light walker silhouette) approach to their. Two groups were elaborated to observe the effect of tool use in the judgement of distance. The control group performed the raking task using the short tool (10 cm) and the experimental group performed the same task using a long tool. The
results showed that the interpersonal distances don’t change after the tool-use. We interpret these results as a lack of activation of motor representation due to the passive condition. The second experiment was conducted in active condition using tools. 12 participants were asked to run a pre-test without tools and a post-test using tools. Two different groups were conformed into a control group and experimental group. Next, the participants were asked to evaluate the distances between themselves and the first avatar and match the distances between the avatars in fronto-parallel. Results show a significant marginal overestimation after tool use. We discuss the results in base on the neuro-cognitive model of the spacial categorization and selection for action by Coello and Delevoye (2007).

Our ability to maintain a coherent bodily self despite continuous changes within and outside our body relies on the highly flexible multisensory representation of the body, and of the space surrounding it: the peripersonal space (PPS). The aim of our study was to investigate whether during pregnancy - when extremely rapid changes in body size and shape occur - a likewise rapid plastic reorganization of the neural representation of the PPS occurs. We used an audio-tactile integration task to measure the PPS boundary at different stages of pregnancy. We found that in the second trimester of pregnancy and postpartum women did not show differences in their PPS size as compared to the control group (non-pregnant women). However, in the third trimester the PPS was larger than the controls' PPS and the shift between representation of near and far space was more gradual. We therefore conclude that during pregnancy the brain adapts to the sudden bodily changes, by expanding the representation of the space around the body. This may represent a mechanism to protect the vulnerable abdomen from injury from surrounding objects.

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND
The space immediately surrounding our body – i.e. ‘peripersonal space’ (PPS; Rizzolatti et al., 1997) - is important, as it is where we interact with stimuli in the external world. Recent studies have shown that the PPS boundaries are malleable. For example, it has been found that being in proximity to an individual we have previously co-operated with induces an expansion of our PPS towards that person.
AIMS
With our study we aimed at investigating whether the PPS changes during pregnancy, a critical stage in life, when extremely rapid changes occur in the body size and shape. As pregnancy advances, the PPS should expand, reflecting an updated mental representation of one’s body that makes external stimuli, initially perceived as being outside of the PPS, to be perceived closer, within the PPS.
METHODS
To this aim, we tested 37 pregnant women and 19 non-pregnant women three times: at the 20th and at 34th week of the gestational period and 8 weeks postpartum (and at the same time intervals in the control group). To assess the PPS boundaries we used a well-established audiotactile task (Canzoneri et al., 2012) whereby participants’ reaction times (RTs) to a tactile stimulus on the abdomen, were measured while listening to a dynamic sound that seems to start at a location far from the participant and progressively approach the participant’s body. When touches occurred at short temporal delays the sound was perceived far and gradually closer to the participant’s body as the delays increase. As sounds facilitate tactile RTs only when presented close to the body (Serino et al., 2007), we expected RTs to progressively decrease as the sound was approaching. The critical distance where the sound speeds up tactile RTs can be taken as a proxy of the PPS boundary.
RESULTS
By comparing this critical distance across the three time periods we found that whereas at the first and the third testing period no differences in the PPS size were observed between the groups, in the second period, the pregnant participants’ PPS was larger than the controls’.
CONCLUSIONS
We conclude that during pregnancy our brain adapts to the sudden change in body size, by expanding the representation of the space around us, possibly in order to protect the vulnerable abdomen from bumping against objects.

Our research focused on the role of vision and proprioception in modulating a defensive reflex (hand blink reflex, HBR) whose magnitude is enhanced when the threatened hand is inside the peripersonal space of the face. We capitalized on virtual reality, which allows dissociating vision and proprioception by presenting a virtual limb in congruent/incongruent positions with respect to the participants' limb. In experiment 1, participants placed their own stimulated hand in far/near positions with respect to their face (postural manipulation task), while observing a virtual empty scenario. Vision was not informative, but the HBR was significantly enhanced in near compared with far position, suggesting that proprioception is sufficient for the HBR modulation to occur. In experiment 2, participants did not perform the postural manipulation but they (passively) observed the avatar's virtual limb performing it. Proprioceptive signals were not informative, but the HBR was significantly enhanced when the observed virtual limb was near to the face, suggesting that visual information plays a role in modulating the HBR. In experiment 3, both participants and avatar performed the postural manipulation, either congruently (both of them far/near) or incongruently (one of them far, the other near). The HBR modulation was present only in congruent conditions. In incongruent conditions, the conflict between vision and proprioception confounded the system, abolishing the difference between far and near positions. Taken together, these findings promote the view that observing a virtual limb modulates the HBR, providing also new evidence on the role of vision and proprioception in modulating this subcortical reflex.

This perspective review focuses on the proposal that predictive multisensory integration occurring in one’s peripersonal space (PPS) supports individuals’ ability to efficiently interact with others, and that integrating sensorimotor signals from the interacting partners leads to the emergence of a shared representation of the PPS. To support this proposal, we first introduce the features of body and PPS representations that are relevant for interpersonal motor interactions. Then, we highlight the role of action planning and execution on the dynamic expansion of the PPS. We continue by presenting evidence of PPS modulations after tool use and review studies suggesting that PPS expansions may be accounted for by Bayesian sensory filtering through predictive coding. In the central section, we describe how this conceptual framework can be used to explain the mechanisms through which the PPS may be modulated by the actions of our interaction partner, in order to facilitate interpersonal coordination. Last, we discuss how this proposal may support recent evidence concerning PPS rigidity in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and its possible relationship with ASD individuals’ difficulties during interpersonal coordination. Future studies will need to clarify the mechanisms and neural underpinning of these dynamic, interpersonal modulations of the PPS.

In order to survive in a complex environment, inhabited by potentially threatening and noxious objects or living beings, we need to constantly monitor our surrounding space, especially in the vicinity of our body. Such a space has been commonly referred to as one's 'peripersonal space' (PPS). In this study we investigated whether emotion-inducing approaching sound sources impact the boundaries of PPS. Previous studies have indeed showed that the boundaries of PPS are not fixed but modulate according to properties of stimuli in the surrounding environment. In Experiment 1, participants performed a simple tactile detection task of targets presented to their right hand. Concurrently, they were presented with intensity-changing task-irrelevant artificial sound sources perceived as approaching toward their body. The physical properties of the sound elicited emotional responses of either neutral or negative valence. Results showed larger PPS when the approaching stimulus had negative as compared to neutral emotional valence. In Experiment 2, we used ecological sounds which content (i.e., psychological associations to the sound producing source), rather than physical properties, elicited emotional responses of negative, positive or neutral valence. In agreement with results from experiment 1, we found larger PPS when the approaching stimuli had negative emotional valence as compared to both neutral and positive ones. Results are discussed within the theoretical framework that conceives PPS as a safety zone around one's body.

The role of active tool use in the remapping of space in hemispatial neglect patients has been extensively investigated. To date, however, there is no evidence that observing tool use can play a role in the remapping of space in hemispatial neglect patients. In this study, a patient with a severe hemispatial neglect in near but not far space and twelve healthy controls were asked to bisect near and far lines using a laser pen. The task was performed both before and immediately after sessions in which they merely observed the experimenter bisecting near and far lines with a stick. During the observation session, participants were either holding an identical stick or empty-handed. Results, in both the neglect patient and healthy controls, showed that observing the experimenter bisecting line while holding the same tool, produces a remapping of the far space into the near space. This result was particularly evident in the neglect patient where observing line-bisection task extended the spatial deficit from the near to the far space. Our results provide new empirical support to the idea that the space around us is not mapped in merely metrical terms, rather it seems to be deeply impacted by both action observation and execution.

Fearful faces modulate spatial processing in peripersonal space: An ERP study

Peripersonal space (PPS) represents the region of space surrounding the body. A pivotal function of PPS is to coordinate defensive responses to threat. We have previously shown that a centrally-presented, looming fearful face, signalling a potential threat in one's surroundings, modulates spatial processing by promoting a redirection of sensory resources away from the face towards the periphery, where the threat may be expected – but only when the face is presented in near, rather than far space. Here, we use electrophysiological measures to investigate the neural mechanism underlying this effect. Participants made simple responses to tactile stimuli delivered on the cheeks, while watching task-irrelevant neutral or fearful avatar faces, looming towards them either in near or far space. Simultaneously with the tactile stimulation, a ball with a checkerboard pattern (probe) appeared to the left or right of the avatar face. Crucially, this probe could either be close to the avatar face, and thus more central in the participant's vision, or further away from the avatar face, and thus more peripheral in the participant's vision. Electroencephalography was continuously recorded. Behavioural results confirmed that in near space only, and for fearful relative to neutral faces, tactile processing was facilitated by the peripheral compared to the central probe. This behavioural effect was accompanied by a reduction of the N1 mean amplitude elicited by the peripheral probe for fearful relative to neutral faces. Moreover, the faster the participants responded to tactile stimuli with the peripheral probe, relative to the central, the smaller was their N1. Together these results, suggest that fearful faces intruding into PPS may increase expectation of a visual event occurring in the periphery. This fear-induced effect would enhance the defensive function of PPS when it is most needed, i.e., when the source of threat is nearby, but its location remains unknown.

Compelling evidence from human and non-human studies suggests that responses to multisensory events are fastened when stimuli occur within the space surrounding the bodily self (i.e., peripersonal space; PPS). However, some human studies did not find such effect. We propose that these dissonant voices might actually uncover a specific mechanism, modulating PPS boundaries according to sensory regularities. We exploited a visuo-tactile paradigm, wherein participants provided speeded responses to tactile stimuli and rated their perceived intensity while ignoring simultaneous visual stimuli, appearing near the stimulated hand (VTNear) or far from it (VTFar; near the non-stimulated hand). Tactile stimuli could be delivered only to one hand (unilateral task) or to both hands randomly (bilateral task). Results revealed that a space-dependent multisensory enhancement (i.e., faster responses and higher perceived intensity in VTNear than VTFar) was present when highly predictable tactile stimulation induced PPS to be circumscribed around the stimulated hand (unilateral task). Conversely, when stimulus location was unpredictable (bilateral task), participants showed a comparable multisensory enhancement in both bimodal conditions, suggesting a PPS widening to include both hands. We propose that the detection of environmental regularities actively shapes PPS boundaries, thus optimizing the detection and reaction to incoming sensory stimuli.

Peripersonal space (PPS) is a highly plastic “invisible bubble” surrounding the body whose boundaries are mapped through multisensory integration. Yet, it is unclear how the spatial proximity to others alters PPS boundaries. Across five experiments (N = 80), by recording behavioral and electrophysiological responses to visuo-tactile stimuli, we demonstrate that the proximity to others induces plastic changes in the neural PPS representation. The spatial proximity to someone else’s hand shrinks the portion of space within which multisensory responses occur, thus reducing the PPS boundaries. This suggests that PPS representation, built from bodily and multisensory signals, plastically adapts to the presence of conspecifics to define the self-other boundaries, so that what is usually coded as “my space” is recoded as “your space”. When the space is shared with conspecifics, it seems adaptive to move the other-space away from the self-space to discriminate whether external events pertain to the self-body or to other-bodies.

Background
Phenomenological research on mindfulness meditation has highlighted experiences of diminished separation between the self and the external world. The peripersonal space (PPS) serves as a sensory representation of the self and the demarcation between self and others. This study probes mindfulness's impact on PPS modulation, delving into its effects on self and self-other representation.
Aims
Exploring the impact of trait and state mindfulness on PPS modulation, comparing PPS between experienced meditators and non-meditators and assessing PPS changes following a short focused-attention meditation (FAM) session. The study leverages the audio-tactile task paradigm to measure PPS alterations.
Method
22 experienced meditators and 26 non-meditators participated in the study. In the audio-tactile task participants responded to tactile stimuli while a sound was near or far from their bodies.
Results
Findings indicate significant PPS modulation post-FAM in experienced meditators, alongside trait differences between them and non-meditators. These results substantiate phenomenological reports from meditators regarding altered body boundary representations.
Conclusions
The study demonstrates mindfulness's capacity to modulate PPS, contributing to our understanding of self-other distinctions. Additionally, beyond the initial project scope, we conducted two studies into the pre-post effects of open-monitoring meditation (OMM) in a new group of 26 participants, and an ecological social interaction task (stop-distance task) to further elucidate the multifaceted relationship between mindfulness, PPS, and self-other representations, offering a comprehensive overview of mindfulness's impact on PPS and interpersonal interactions.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Peripersonal space (PPS) is a dynamic multisensory representation of the space around the body, influenced by internal and external sensory information. The malleability of PPS boundaries, as evidenced by their expansion after tool use or modulation through social interactions, positions PPS as a crucial element in understanding the subjective experiences of self and otherness. Building on the existing literature highlighting both the cognitive and bodily effects of mindfulness meditation, this study proposes a novel approach by employing focused-attention meditation (FAM) and a multisensory audio–tactile task to assess PPS in both the extension and sharpness of its boundaries. The research hypothesis posits that FAM, which emphasizes heightened attention to bodily sensations and interoception, may reduce the extension of PPS and make its boundaries less sharp. We enrolled 26 non-meditators who underwent a repeated measure design in which they completed the PPS task before and after a 15-min FAM induction. We found a significant reduction in the sharpness of PPS boundaries but no significant reduction in PPS extension. These results provide novel insights into the immediate effects of FAM on PPS, potentially shedding light on the modulation of self–other representations in both cognitive and bodily domains. Indeed, our findings could have implications for understanding the intricate relationship between mindfulness practices and the subjective experience of self within spatial contexts.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.

Mindfulness can be defined as paying attention to the present moment with a non-judgmental, accepting stance. Mindfulness both as a stable trait and as a mental state can be trained through meditation, a form of secular mind-body technique aimed at increasing the ability to focus on bodily awareness and mental events with the prospect of cultivating equanimity and awareness. Mindfulness practice has a strong effect on interoception and body awareness, as well as on the perception of the boundaries of the body. In fact, mindfulness practice can alter the peripersonal space (PPS) perception. On the other hand, mindfulness has been shown to increase social skills such as empathy, compassion, altruism, and promoting self-others connectedness in general. While the interoceptive and bodily effects are clearly related to the nature of the basic meditation practice, i.e., paying attention to breathing and body sensations, how such a solipsistic practice can affect social skills remains largely unexplained.
In this talk, we present our hypothesis that mindfulness would affect social skills by primarily altering the perception of the body and its boundaries. In particular, we hypothesized that the increase in interoceptive abilities due to mindfulness meditation would lead to an alteration in PPS perception, which has been proposed to be implied in the perception of social boundaries between the self and the others as the space where social interactions take place. Therefore, this PPS alteration would, in turn, affect the social capabilities by changing how others relate to the self and its surrounding, personal space. This new proposed framework aims to connect bodily awareness and interoception to social abilities, with the mediation of the PPS representations. As mindfulness affects all these domains, it plays a pivotal role in this framework and can allow us to study the pattern of relationships between such representations and how mindfulness affects this pattern, with both theoretical and practical revenues. We present some experimental data collected within this framework to support our proposal.
In the experiments, we assessed the extension of PPS with the audio-tactile task developed by Serino and colleagues (2012, 2013) and of the personal space with the stop-distance task, in both experienced meditators and non-meditators, and before and after a short practice. We also collected the meditation
expertise of participants and their trait measures such as mindfulness, interoception abilities, and social skills. Our results show how a short mindfulness induction is able to change the PPS boundaries, increasing its extent and reducing its sharpness, while at the same time it reduces the personal space, i.e., participants report a closer distance from a confederate before starting to feel social discomfort.
Overall, these results support the functionality of our framework and our main hypothesis: mindfulness seems
to promote a more open and accepting stance in social experience with others by shaping bodily and PPS awareness.
