Estudio exploratorio de las características de personalidad, psicopatología y mecanismos de defensa en sujetos que reportan experiencias paranormales espontáneas
Publication year: 2006
URL:
http://dialnet.unirioja.es/servlet/articulo?codigo=4539906
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:

A parapsychological investigation of the theory of psychopraxia: Experimental and theoretical researches into an alternative theory explaining normal and paranormal phenomena
Publication year: 2001
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
Describes a series of four experiments which were conducted to test the theory of psychopraxia. The thesis is an investigation of the theory from the perspective of paranormal phenomena only. It is argued that the theory of psychopraxia is important to the field of parapsychology because it offers (a) a philosophical critique on taken-for-granted assumptions about the nature of the paranormal, (b) relatively unambiguous terminology, and (c) a process-oriented approach to investigations of the paranormal by concentrating on conditions deemed necessary in bringing about paranormal effects. The thesis concludes that, in its current form, the psychopraxia model needs clarification of its most crucial concepts ("self", "pro-attitude" and "necessary conditions") before it can be regarded as a workable theory.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The present study employs standardized data acquired from the Brain Resource International Database to study the relationship between mobile phone usage, personality, and brain function (n = 300). Based on the frequency and duration of mobile phone usage, three groups were formed. The findings suggest a subtle slowing of brain activity related to mobile phone use that is not explained by differences in personality. These changes are still within normal physiological ranges. Better executive function in mobile phone users may reflect more focused attention, possibly associated with a cognitive training effect (i.e., frequently making phone calls in distracting places), rather than a direct effect of mobile phone use on cognition.

Relations between hypnotisability and psychopathology revisited
Publication year: 2004
URL:
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ch.304/abstract
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Inspired by a first episode of schizophrenia following within a week of stage hypnosis, we examined relations between schizotypy and hypnotizability with the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility (HGSHS), showing positive associations with 15 items mostly consisting of positive aspects of schizotypy. Here this was re-examined in two further samples. First, with the more cognitively loaded Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C, administered individually to Italian, female psychology students. In the second the HGSHS was administered to British medical student volunteers in stress reduction studies. In the first replication 12 correlations were disclosed, all with positive features of schizotypy, nine consisting of unreality experiences, with six items relating to psychic experiences. In the second replication of the 13 positive associations, seven were negative items belonging to the withdrawn syndrome, with six belonging to the social anxiety subscale, a non-specific feature of schizotypy. Across the series of studies, all but one item was interpreted as consistent with associations between hypnotizability and positive schizotypy and social anxiety. Though the items mostly varied from study to study, and despite sampling and scale differences, the outcome clearly merits large scale studies to investigate further the relation between hypnotic susceptibility and psychopathology.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The term “psychometry” is a type of extrasensory perception which allows a “psychic claimants” or “sensitive” to receive impressions using a physical object. One hundred fifty seven subjects were interviewed, but 120 took part at this research project, both sexes 67% females and 33% males (age
range 18–78; Mean= 46.48; SD= 14.05). The research project explored if susceptibility hypnosis, dissociation scores and personality characteristics, such as extroversion, neuroticism and the sixteen factors scores of the 16PF correlated with psi-scores of both groups, subjects who claim psiability (called “psi-abilitiers”) and subjects who claim psi-experiences (psi-experiencers), re-clustered using the Anomalous Experiences Inventory (AEI). Both groups were tested by four psi-tests: (1) four objects-target were used in order to obtain (a) free statements compared with (b) forced choise (anatomical or physical characteristics) response tests. The results were evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively; (2) personality tests pooled were used to obtain personality profiles (high and low extroversion and neuroticism scores combined) in order to design an ESP test using name and surname; and (3) “psychometry” test was compared with a “nonpsychometry” test (objects vs. pictures-target). The purpose of a quantitative evaluation of the psychics’ statements is to establish if these statements are more accurate than expected by chance. Statistical data of the psi tests are being proccesed. Briefly, our results showed that psiabilitiers claim to be very spiritual, had many psi experiences, scored high extraversion and they are dominant and self-sufficient.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Ganzfeld stimulation is associated to an increase of attention to internal imagery. Investigators have suggested the association to develop an “experimental–hypnagogic” technique to facilitate the study of hypnagogic imagery, an association such as the ganzfeld technique. Three experiments were carried out by us. The first one, non-ganzfeld condition is compared with ganzfeld technique. Both conditions were counter-balanced. One hundred thirty-eight subjects attended two trials of GESP. A CD–R contained 3,500 high–resolution color pictures was used as image-targets. This experiment offered some support to the claim that ganzfeld stimulation is psi conducive. A significant difference between both condition were obtained, in a positive direction to the Ganzfeld condition (p< .0003). The difference was also significant (expected= 25%; ganzfeld= 41.3%, p< .001 vs. nonganzfeld= 27.5, z-score= 1.71; p= .043, one-tailed). The second one reports a relationship between personality factors and ESP scores. Neuroticism and Extraversion scores (using two personality inventories) were correlated with ESP scores. Though this study did not show significant results to E or N and the 16PF factors, cholerics obtained more hits than did melancholics (four personality profiles arise from a combination of N and E scores). The third one compared auditory with visual stimuli under ganzfeld condition. Musical styles were chosen as targets. A part of the early sample (N= 54) attended two GESP sessions. Color pictures and 112 themes on mp3 were randomized each ganzfeld session. Musical- (p < .008) and visual-target condition (p= .001) in a positive direction for the visual target condition, obtained psi-hitting.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The research on false memories is one of the major topics in the human memory domain. In the 90’s several paradigms emerged to study the extension and variability of that phenomena. The two main experimental
procedures were the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm (Roediger & McDermott, 1995) and the repetitive suggestion paradigm proposed by Loftus and Pickrell (1995).
The DRM paradigm consists in the presentation of lists of 15 words related with a non-presented critical lure (e.g., mad, fear, hate, rage, temper, fury, ire, wrath, happy, fight, hatred, mean, calm, emotion, enrage, are words related with the critical word anger). Results showed that the participants recalled the non-presented critical word as much as the words of the middle of the list (35%-43%) – asymptotic zone of the serial position curve. Results also showed that the amount of false recognition of the critical non-presented word was about 83%. The other paradigm consists in the presentation of true and false episodes (occurred between 4 to 8 years old) during an interview with young adults. The procedure implies the presentation of three true episodes (proposed by the participant’s parents) and a false episode - lost in a supermarket - that never occurred in their life (confirmed by the participant’s parents).
Results showed that the production of false recall is quite small in the first interview. But in a second interview, administered two or three weeks later, the percentage of false recall of the episode increased. False memories are related with participant’s dissociation experience and personality characteristics.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The hypothesis under investigation in this study in that early onset alcohol abuse is a factor underlying impulsive violence particularly amongst personality disordered offenders. The study has recorded forensic and substance abuse histories, psychometric information, Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) and performance on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) in Personality Disordered patients in Broadmoor. Most prevalent diagnostic category is Anti-social personality disorder. CNV was first described by Grey Walter in 1964. Howard et al (1982), studying special hospital patients reported that, using a symmetrical avoidance paradigm, CNV differentiation was inversely related to psychometric Impulsivity. Previous study indicates that early onset alcohol and drug use is highly prevalent amongst high secure psychiatric patients in the England and Wales jurisdiction (Lumsden et al 2004). This potential risk factor may lead to reduced frontal lobe function. Multi-channel electrophysiological recording of the CNV were collected as a measure of frontal lobe (possibly anterior cingulate) function (Stephan et al 1995). Results are presented from the study relating electrophysiological function (CNV), neuropsychological function (IGT), psychometric/personality profiles (UPPS and IPDE) with behavioural measures (offending and substance use histories and ongoing behaviour in the hospital). Age of onset of alcohol abuse in combination with personality variables is a factor relating to offending and IGT performance.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Findings in parapsychology suggest an effect of distant intentionality. Two laboratory set-ups explored this topic by measuring the effect of a distant intention on psychophysiological variables. The DMILS (direct mental interaction in living systems) experiments investigate the effect of various intentions on the electrodermal activity (EDA) of a remote subject. The "Remote Staring" experiments examine whether gazing by an observer (starer) covaries with the electrodermal activity of the person being observed (staree).
In two meta-analyses (Schmidt, Schneider, Utts & Walach, 2004) it became obvious that the remote staring studies had a lower overall quality than the DMILS studies. While there are some high quality DMILS studies (score over 90%) the highest quality in Remote Staring studies is 71%.
Thus there is a lack in studies with good methodology to assess the remote staring paradigm. We conducted a remote staring study that intended to overcome methodological shortcomings of earlier studies.
Fifty participants were invited to take part as starees. After completing questionnaires on mindfulness, mood, personality and paranormal belief they rested in a comfortable position in front of a video camera while their EDA was continuously monitored. The experimenter also acted as the starer and either observed or did not observe the participant through a closed circuit television system according to a random schedule. EDA during stare and non-stare epochs was compared for significant differences.
In addition to this basic (replication) set-up two new hypotheses were tested. The participant had the possibility to press a button whenever s/he feels stared at. This added a conscious response variable without engaging into the disadvantages of the standard conscious guessing paradigm (guessing strategies, response bias etc). Furthermore the distraction of the starer's intention during non-stare epochs was varied. In one condition s/he was mentally occupied by a cognitive task, in the other s/he was just told not to stare (standard condition). We hypothesized that the distraction from the target in the standard condition was too weak to avoid an unwanted intentional effect in the staree.
Overall we did not find any staring effect at all, not in the EDA data and not in the 'conscious' open response situation. The difference between the conditions were the sender was distracted or not distracted was not significant (p=.07) but for the condition where the starers were distracted (N=20) we found a medium effect size for a staring effect according.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
A series of four parapsychological experiments were conducted to test Thalbourne’s (2002) theory of psychopraxia. (1) The I Ching Experiment: Evidence was found that the I Ching (an ancient Chinese form of divination) may involve a paranormal component not explainable exclusively as either ESP or PK, and therefore more preferably referred to as exosomatic psychopraxia (i.e., the psychopractic function working outside the mind/body complex). (2) The Gambling Experiment: A significant negative relationship was found between outcomes on two paranormal tasks, suggesting that ‘compliant’ and ‘noncompliant’ pro attitudes are incompatible (the pro attitude is an orientation of the self towards a specific and preferred outcome or goal). (3) The Skeptics Experiment: So-called 'converted' skeptics produced psi-hitting after conversion to belief in psi, suggesting that the pro attitude is mutable. (4) The Vision-Impaired Experiment: No evidence was found that the vision-impaired had a compensatory advantage over sighted participants in a free-response task. There was suggestive evidence that the totally blind performed better than all other participants.
Some ‘necessary conditions’ were found, which ostensibly facilitate psychopraxia, including high scoring on four 16PF personality factors, and scoring high on transliminality (the tendency to experience psychological material coming into, and going out of consciousness). The theory of psychopraxia is important to the field of parapsychology because it offers (i) a philosophical critique on taken-for-granted assumptions about the nature of the paranormal, (ii) relatively unambiguous terminology, and (iii) a process-oriented approach to investigations of the paranormal.

Brain blood flow during psychokinesis tasks - Biophysical and psychophysiological study on a psychic
Publication year: 2008

http://www.islis.a-iri.org/en/journalE/abst262E.htm
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The authors tested a famous Chinese psychic (female, 40 years old) during psychokinesis tasks “teleportation”. Targets were vitamin pills on an electric balance or in a bottle. The subject tried to teleport the pills in free style tests for 30-45 min. During the tasks, her brain blood flow was measured by functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and also respiration, electrodermal activity and photoplethysmograms were measured. Pill weights were measured with an analytical semi-micro balance every second at 0.01 mg accuracy. Video cameras, field RNGs, a thermograph, field IR sensors and an electrostatic voltmeter were set near the balance. The subject was given a profile questionnaire and 5 questionnaires on character traits such as Big Five test. The Uchida-Kraepelin Psychodiagnostic test was also done. Moreover, to allow comparison to other studies, the subject was given a facial recognition test using photos of a young Japanese woman's face as stimuli. No teleportation phenomena were observed. Brain blood flow increased at the subject’s right cerebral hemisphere during the tasks. Activated areas were similar to those during facial recognition tests. Only one of the field RNGs showed a significant deviation during the experimental period. Electrostatic voltmeter measurements suggested that the electric charge of her body was disturbed slightly during tasks. Based on her results of psychological tests, the subject’s personality was evaluated as ordinary, and not special.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
We conducted two trials of a free-response ESP test. The aim was to determine if two groups, ‘low’- and ‘high’-scorers on a measure of hypnotic susceptibility, would score differently on a psi-hitting task. We used the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility which assesses the hypnotisability of subjects when tested in groups. The sample (N = 101 psi-believing participants; 69 females and 32 males) was split into ‘High HS’ (n = 20) and ‘Low HS’ groups (n = 81) based on HS scores. There was a significant difference between the two groups on Hypnotic Susceptibility and psi scores (i.e., number of hits), t(99) = 2.31, p = .012. A second study was carried out. A number of papers have investigated the idea of rational versus intuitive thinking and how this might relate to paranormal beliefs. Those who possess both intuitive and rational thinking styles are more likely to report paranormal experiences and subjective paranormal ability than those who express either intuitive or rational thinking. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the differences between psychic claimants (N = 49) and non-psychic claimants (N = 45) on such personality factors as Global Constructive Thinking, Emotional Coping, Behavioural Coping, and Esoteric Thinking. The sample consisted of 94 participants, all of whom believed in psi. Participants completed the Constructive Thinking Inventory and the Anomalous Experiences Inventory. The psychic claimants group had significantly higher scores on 12 out of 23 factors/facets which could not all be explained by chance. Compared to non-psychic claimants, the psychic claimants tend to have more positive attitudes; their thinking is action-oriented; they are good behavioural copers; they think in ways that promote effective action; and they are more accepting of others. At the same time, they are more rigid in their thinking than non-psychic claimants.
