Anomalous remote diagnosis: Mental and motor psi impressions under iconic representation of the person-target

ABSTRACT:
A common procedure to encourage self-claimed psychics is to use iconic representations (photographs) as inductors. The aim of this study was to compare 2 conditions – “mental” and “motor” – using images of the faces of persons as targets. Specifically, we wanted to determine if the scores were different based on 2 kinds of stimulus (diseased and healthy). Participants were clustered as psychics and nonpsychics. The sample consisted of 224 participants, recruited through an e-mail list, and their ages ranged from 18 to 75 (M = 44.19 years old). Eight photographs included 4 of subjects “sick” with a medically diagnosed disease and 4 of healthy persons (the “controls”). All of the images of sick persons were taken from 6 months to 2 years before the diseases were discovered. The results of the 2 procedures were significantly above chance: the mean “mental” score = 2.32 (p < .001, 1-tailed), and the mean “motor” score = 2.15 (p = .016, 1-tailed). A second analysis was carried out to determine if the mental and motor procedures led to different scores; indeed, mental scored significantly higher than motor (the mean “mental” score = 2.32 vs. the mean “motor” score = 2.15 (p < .001).

Individual, perceptual and psychological differences between psi-tested self-claimed psychics and non-psychics

The specific aim of the present study was to find psychological differences between psychic and non-psychics. Specifically, we hypothesized that the self-claimed psychics score higher than non-psychics on the following four dimensions: (1) Individual Differences (i.e., neuroticism, extroversion, psychoticism, cognitive and emotional empathy, and defense style); (2) Psychopathology (i.e., healthy and negative schizotypy, dissociation, hallucinations and abnormal perceptions, magical ideation and perceptual aberration); (3) Boundaries (i.e., transliminality and boundary 'thinness'); and (4) Perception (i.e., perceptual cognition and imagery, and sensationseeking). The database used in this paper was originally collected as part of a project that investigated the so-called token-object effect (Parra & Argibay, 2013a, 2013b). Two categorization procedures were performed in order to split the sample into (1) Psychic/high-psi-scorers (n = 48) and (2) Non-psychic/low-psi-scorers (n = 44). Psychic/high-psiscorers scored higher than non-psychic/low-psi-scorers on Extroversion, and they scored lower on Neuroticism and Psychoticism, which confirm previous findings. Other results showed that psychic/high-psi-scorers tended to have 'thinner' boundaries, and they reported more unusual/psychic experiences, than non-psychic/low-psiscorers. The two groups, however, did not differ on schizotypy or dissociation. Generally speaking, the typical psychic in our study (similar to the one described by Eysenck) is 'sanguine', tends to be lively, sociable, carefree, talkative, pleasure-seeking, optimistic, and leadership-oriented.

BACKGROUND
This research is a qualitative pluralistic project concerned with clairaudience experienced by psychic practitioners. A key aspect of the research is to use different methods of qualitative analysis to analyse the same data. The different emphases of these approaches were expected to provide complementary insights into the target phenomenon. The study builds on previous research with mediums, to identify and explore clairaudience in a sample of psychic practitioners who do not have religious or professional affiliations that provide explanatory frameworks for these lived experiences.
AIMS
Studies with non-clinical voice-hearing samples, such as psychic practitioners, suggest the importance of the meaning that experients make of these voices for positive wellbeing. The aim of this research was to identify what factors protect against distress (as found in clinical samples of voice hearers) for people who hear voices but do not require service support.
METHOD
The research methodology took an interpretative pluralistic qualitative design, whereby a set of qualitative data analysis methods are applied to the same data set. Such an approach has been recommended to be particularly useful for studying anomalous experiences, where the ontological status of parapsychological phenomena is contested. Fourteen mediums were interviewed for the study. Data were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis, narrative analysis and discourse analysis.
RESULTS
Across the three different analyses of data we identified themes in relation to achieving a mediumistic identity and making sense of their experiences. All mediums in our study recounted early life traumas (often compounded by later life traumas) that pre-dated the development of their psychic abilities and mediumistic work. Participants expressed concerns about and drew distinctions between mediumistic practice and poor mental health, although they had difficulty in disclosing their experiences and seeking help due to their perception of negative attitudes by others. In contrast to the anticipated negative responses of others, participants had developed clear ideas about what constituted mental health, mental illness and mediumistic ability for them, which they recognised did not fully accord with commonly held views in wider society or by clinicians. Despite the benefits of adopting a mediumistic understanding of the self to process past traumas and make sense of anomalous experiences, mediumistic work itself could at times provide its own challenges to mental health, such as in exposure to the distress of clients.
CONCLUSIONS
The findings suggest a number of areas for consideration by clinicians who may work with mediums or their clients. In particular, the research highlights the value of not dismissing or attempting to change appraisals of valued aspects of mediums’ anomalous experiences. However, the findings do indicate that support for exposure to clients’ difficulties (such as vicarious trauma) might be helpful, in the same way in which other professionals might receive support with such experiences.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: This study investigated personal perceptions (involvements) and comprehensions (interpretations) of self-ascribed paranormal abilities. Twelve participants with supposed supernatural powers took part in semi-structured interviews exploring the origin, phenomenology, and nature of their powers. Interview transcripts were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis (RTA), a qualitative method that identifies patterns within data. Four major themes expressed meanings and representations held by participants: Formative Influences (sub-themes: Gifted Family Members and Anomalous Occurrence), (Inter) Subjective Paranormal Experience (sub-themes: Transcendental/Mystic and Extra-Sensory Perception), Embodied Processes (sub-theme: Control), and Perception of Reality (two sub-themes: Self-Awareness and Fantastic/Surreal Perceptions). Consideration of themes identified an inextricable link between perception, interpretation, and belief in ability. Within narratives, interviewees outlined, contextualised, and established the validity of their powers. They drew upon supporting autobiographical evidence from their life histories and obfuscated and/or discounted conventional explanations. Generally, accounts reflected individual attempts to comprehend and justify the nature and experience of professed abilities. The authors discuss these processes and suggest ways to extend and develop ensuing research.
