The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).

La mayoría de las encuestas llevadas a cabo sobre experiencias parapsicológicas espontáneas muestran que el reporte de éstas parece tener un intenso impacto en la vida emocional de las personas. Estudiar cómo se enfocan estas experiencias paranormales puede ayudar a los investigadores a descubrir maneras de ayudar a enfrentarlas. Se realizó un estudio exploratorio de las características de personalidad, psicopatología, inteligencia y mecanismos de defensa de 32 sujetos quienes participaron de una serie de sesiones de psicoterapia grupal. El puntaje de capacidad eductiva, medido por el test de Matrices Progresivas, no difiere de la población en general. Hay indicadores de esquizotipia e hipocondría (medido por el MMPI-2, “código 8-1”), y un leve predominio de mecanismos de defensa maníacos sobre los esquizoides, empleando mediante un típico test psicodinámico de administración verbal usado en Argentina.

Relations between hypnotisability and psychopathology revisited

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Inspired by a first episode of schizophrenia following within a week of stage hypnosis, we examined relations between schizotypy and hypnotizability with the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility (HGSHS), showing positive associations with 15 items mostly consisting of positive aspects of schizotypy. Here this was re-examined in two further samples. First, with the more cognitively loaded Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C, administered individually to Italian, female psychology students. In the second the HGSHS was administered to British medical student volunteers in stress reduction studies. In the first replication 12 correlations were disclosed, all with positive features of schizotypy, nine consisting of unreality experiences, with six items relating to psychic experiences. In the second replication of the 13 positive associations, seven were negative items belonging to the withdrawn syndrome, with six belonging to the social anxiety subscale, a non-specific feature of schizotypy. Across the series of studies, all but one item was interpreted as consistent with associations between hypnotizability and positive schizotypy and social anxiety. Though the items mostly varied from study to study, and despite sampling and scale differences, the outcome clearly merits large scale studies to investigate further the relation between hypnotic susceptibility and psychopathology.

Slow cortical potentials preceding visually guided saccades in schizophrenics

The parameters of saccades and presaccadic slow potentials were studied in right-handed men with a dominant right eye, including 19 schizophrenics and 12 healthy subjects. For visual stimulation, three light-emitting diodes were used, which were located in the center of the visual field (the central fixation stimulus) and 10° to the right and left of it (peripheral stimuli). Two stimulation protocols were used: with a simultaneous switching off of the central fixation stimulus and switching on of the peripheral stimuli (test 1) and with an interstimulus gap of 200 ms (test 2). According to the latency, saccades were divided into anticipatory, express, and regular. Slow EEG potentials preceding regular saccades were analyzed. It was found that the proportion of anticipatory saccades is considerably higher than the normal value in schizophrenia. The analysis of the presaccadic potentials demonstrated a significant decrease in the amplitude of negative potentials in the vertex region at early stages of presaccadic preparation and its increase in the occipital region at late stages. Test 2 in the patients demonstrated an increase in the positivity focus in the frontal region of the right hemisphere. It was assumed that the alterations found in schizophrenia result from the deficit of frontal cortical fields.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
OBJECTIVES:
Previous neuroimaging findings implicate an orbitofrontal cortical dysfunction in the pathogenesis of anorexia nervosa (Uher 2003). The orbitofrontal cortex is necessary for practical decision-making in humans and the Iowa Gambling task (IGT) became established as an instrument for investigation of decision making and orbitofrontal function (Bechara 2002).
METHODS:
Using the computerised IGT, we investigated the profile of decision making performance in anorexia nervosa female patients (n=29), male patients with anorexia (n=11) long term recovered participants (n=27), healthy control females (29), healthy males (N=25). Skin conductance response during the task was measured using the PSYLAB equipment.
RESULTS:
As expected, the healthy control women made progressively more advantageous choices during the task. Patients with AN failed to show this learning effect and continued making disadvantageous choices throughout the task. Those recovered form AN, showed a normal learning curve and their performance was no worse than that of healthy controls in the IGT.
CONCLUSIONS:
The impairment of decision-making in AN is replication of previous findings (Cavedini 2004). However, decision-making in women recovered form AN was not previously reported and may elucidate the role of this cognitive function in the pathogenesis and course of the illness. This pattern of results may suggest that impaired decision-making is either a state marker of AN and improvement in decision-making is part of the process of recovery or it may be that decision-making capacity is a positive prognostic factor which makes it possible to attain full recovery. To distinguish between these two distinct possibilities, longitudinal investigation is warranted.

BACKGROUND:
Recent evidence suggests that cannabis use may be associated with antisocial and violent behaviour, raising the question: What brain mechanisms mediate the disinhibiting effects of cannabis on behaviour?
AIMS/HYPOTHESES:
To examine whether an electrocortical measure of affective impulsivity, Go/No Go contingent negative variation, is affected by acute cannabis intoxication.
METHODS: Slow brain potentials were recorded in a Go/No Go noise avoidance task from five habitual cannabis users before, during and after they smoked a cannabis reefer containing 11 mg D-9-tetrahydrocannabinol.
RESULTS:
Slow brain potentials developed normally in both Go and No Go conditions before and during cannabis smoking but were severely disrupted 20-40 minutes later, coincident with peak intoxication. Cannabis effects on Go/No Go brain activity resembled those reported to occur in patients with lateral prefrontal cortex lesions.
CONCLUSION/IMPLICATIONS: Our findings are preliminary, calling for larger-scale studies, to confirm the present findings and to investigate whether brain responses to cannabis intoxication differentiate those who are predisposed to suffer adverse consequences of cannabis use from those who are not.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This paper presents a review of recent research about the relations between attachment and psychopathology in young adults and adults. The authors analyse the main theoretical concepts of attachment theory relevant for understanding the links between the development of attachment relationships and the course of psychopathology, namely the concepts of developmental pathways, internal working models, behavioural conditional strategies, and attachment disorganization. This theoretical approach is followed by the empirical analyses centred on the methods for assessing attachment in adults and young adults, including the interview focused on the quality of the representational organization of attachment - Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) - as well as self-report measures allowing the evaluation of adults' perceptions about their attachment relations. Finally, the most recent empirical studies, examining the relation between attachment and psychopathology in distinct clinical groups are reviewed and discussed by differencing studies based on the AAI and on self-report measures.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
A total of 225 particpants were recruited into this project.
Women with current AN demonstrated poor decision making on the IGT compared to both healthy controls and recovered AN participants (p=0.05).
AN patients, but not those who were recovered from AN, showed a significantly diminished Anticipatory Skin Conductance Response (ASCR) before making high-risk choices in comparison with female controls (p=0.01).
BN patients did not show any significant differences in IGT performance or skin conductance response compared to the other groups.
In the whole group of participants, IGT performance was not correlated to current levels of depression(p=0.6) or anxiety (p=0.7). However, IGT performance showed significant moderate correlations with ASCR (p=0.01).
Data analysis (e.g. males, BN, genotype and IGT performance) and is still in progress and more articles are being planned or in preparation.
AN is relatively rare condition in men. We have collected data and planning to increase recruitment of the participants to increase the power of this study in progress.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Our study was originally concerned with full-length brain Cyclic Nucleotide Phosphodiesterase (CNP), a member of the 2H phosphodiesterase family, which is found abundantly in the myelin of oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system, and has been shown to be of major importance for axonal survival. As such, CNP is believed to be implicated in diseases such as multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia. The three-dimensional structure of the full-length protein is anticipated to yield new insights into the molecular mechanisms of the protein.
We have developed a protocol for expression and purification of the recombinant full-length protein, verified the integrity of the protein by mass spectrometry, and checked the fold and its stability by circular dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopy. Extensive crystallisation trials did not yield crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction so far. In selected trials, protein self-organisation was observed, probably indicating epitaxy-like formation of nanostructures on the glass plates.
Another family of brain proteins are the Visinin-like Proteins (VILIPs) that are neuronal calcium sensor proteins and an important factor for synaptic plasticity. They are involved in schizophrenia, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and other disorders.
To obtain further insights into the molecular level mechanisms of VILIPs, homology models were generated and modelling techniques were used to elucidate the binding mechanisms of these proteins to specific membrane components (PIPs). We have developed the first three-dimensional model of VILIP:PIP complexesm, and propose a mechanism whereby recognition of specific PIP derivatives contributes to the targeting of VILIPs to subcellular locations.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Data of 41 healthy subjects, 14 volunteers, exposed to dry immersion (DI) and 19 schizophrenic patients were analyzed. Healthy subjects were right-handed males with right (RE) and left (LE) eye dominance, and patients had RE dominance. 2 modifications of antisaccadic task were used. In A1 task fixation period was 800-1000 ms, and in A2 task – 1200-1400 ms. EEG was recorded from 19 sites. Mean amplitude of slow cortical negative potentials (SN) time-locked to peripheral cue onset was evaluated. The saccade characteristics did not depend on task and experimental conditions in healthy RE subjects. In LE subjects percent of errors was lower in A2 task than in A1 one, and increase of errors and saccade latencies was revealed after exposure to DI. Patients performed A2 task better than A1 one, but they exhibited delays in performance of correct saccades and larger number of errors in both tasks compared to healthy subjects. RE subjects demonstrated high level of frontal activation before antisaccades in both tasks. Reduced SN amplitude in frontal region was revealed in LE subjects. The most pronounced decline of SN amplitude in frontal regions was found in patients. Predominant left hemisphere activation was observed during the last 200 ms before peripheral cue in all groups. Changes in cortical activity after DI were similar in RE and LE groups: SN amplitude decreased, and foci of negativity shifted to the right hemisphere. Thus, obtained results (1) support the neurodevelopmental model of cerebral lateralization, (2) demonstrate the independence of basic hemisphere specialization from eyedness, (3) corroborate the important role of frontal disorders in genesis of schizophrenia.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This paper describes a project which has a focus on immersive virtual reality (IVR) as an experimental
environment and medium for telepathy. IVR denotes the use of three-dimensional computer graphics
technology to generate artificial environments that afford real-time interaction and exploration. These are
intended to give the user an impression of being present (‘telepresence’) or immersed in a computer-generated world. A sense of immersion is promoted through the use of head mounted displays (HMDs). These present stereo images and sound to create a perceptually encompassing computer environment. An instrumented data glove allows participants to interact with virtual objects. We argue that IVR has a number of features which make it well suited for the study of telepathy, including a higher degree of experimental control, the co-location of senders and receivers, and the opportunity for more ‘natural’ and meaningful (to participants) experimental trials. In the early stages of the project we have focussed on developing an immersive virtual environment (the Telepathic Immersive Virtual Environment, or TIVE) which acts as the experimental environment for both ‘Sender’ and ‘Receiver’ in the later telepathy trials. This environment looks like a room: for example, it has a door, a window, a chair, a bookshelf and a potted plant. During the experimental trials the bookshelf is filled with four objects. These objects are interactive; that is, both Sender and Receiver are able to pick up and manipulate the target object. In addition the Receiver can also handle three other objects which form part of the target set (the Sender does not see these additional objects). As the Sender and Receiver handle an object in the TIVE they hear a sound evocative of that object. Having constructed the TIVE our work now focuses on two telepathy studies. In these studies the Sender tries to communicate to the Receiver by telepathic means the identity of an object randomly chosen from a set of four (the set is in turn randomly chosen from a group of four sets). Within this paper we describe the general procedure for our telepathy studies using the TIVE. This includes the computerised random process of target set selection (and of selecting which object in the set acts as the target), and the use of gesture recognition for object selection and de-selection. We conclude the paper with some indication of our future plans for the TIVE.
