The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.

INTRODUCTION:
It is a well established observation that plane inversion causes deterioration of performance in face discrimination tasks – the so-called face inversion effect (FIE). This phenomenon suggests that the human visual system contains specialized processing mechanisms that are more engaged by upright faces than by inverted faces or non-face objects. One prominent hypothesis proposes that such specialization results from
extensive practice with upright faces, leading to expertise for this canonical orientation. Here, we aimed to investigate perceptual learning for faces presented in multiple orientations, by conducting both psychophysics and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments.
METHODS:
We conducted two psychophysics experiments in which participants performed a same / different discrimination task (DT) on pairs of faces: for orientations ranging between 0 and 300° over one session (Experiment 1) and for a single orientation over four training sessions (Experiment 2). We then conducted an fMRI experiment to investigate the neural correlates of face perception at multiple orientations.
RESULTS:
A quadratic effect was observed across orientations for both reaction times and error rates, indicating a deterioration of performance away from 0° and towards 180°. In Experiment 2, we observed a main effect of session, indicating that participants became significantly faster and more accurate with training. Finally, when tested with a different orientation (240°) at the end of the last session, participants showed a similar
performance compared with the trained orientation (120°), suggesting that transfer of learning across orientations took place.
CONCLUSIONS:
In summary, we have showed a consistent effect of face orientation in both behavioural and neuroimaging results. Specifically, we found that participants gave more errors and were slower in their responses as faces were rotated away from 0º. In addition, performance was improved when participants underwent periods of training, both for trained and untrained orientations. Consistently with the expertise hypothesis, we also
found a parametric modulation of fMRI activity in specialized visual brain areas, according to the quadratic behavioural effect of face orientation.

If there is evidence of an overall effect of remote staring detection, then theoretically there should also be evidence of electrophysiological processing of this information in the brain. A series of three experiments examining the potential electrocortical correlates of remote staring detection are presented, followed by a fourth experiment to examine a potential artifact. The first experiment provided an initial exploration of this effect, finding primarily that "remote staring detection" has no evident time-locked processing associated with it on its own but rather acts upon other processes occurring at the same time. The second experiment provided evidence that this effect is not related specifically to face processing but can impact on other forms of processing as well. The third experiment uncovered evidence of a potential artifact that could explain the "remote staring effect," which is verified in the final experiment. The overall results are discussed in light of an interesting and subtle psychophysics luminance effect that could potentially have an impact upon a wide variety of experiments that employ event-related measures of electrocortical processing.

Time perception, mindfulness and attentional capacities in transcendental meditators and matched controls

Only a few studies have investigated the sense of time in experienced meditators. In the current case–control study, we investigated whether 20 practitioners in transcendental meditation (TM) showed differences in the perception of time as compared to 20 matched controls. Perception of time was assessed with a battery of psychophysical tasks including duration reproduction and time estimation tasks in the milliseconds-to-minutes range as well as with psychometric instruments related to subjective time and assessments concerning the subjective passage of time. Attentional capacities were measured with the Attention Network Test. Trait-mindfulness was assessed with the Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory. Results indicate that the TM meditators performed more consistently in the duration reproduction tasks in the multiple seconds' range and responded more accurately in the time estimation tasks in the minutes' range as well as in the duration discrimination task than controls. Self-rated mindfulness was more pronounced in meditators, while attentional capacities did not differ. In conclusion, experts in TM performed more accurately in psychophysical time perception tasks and had higher mindfulness than non-meditating controls. Whether these differences are causally related to the practice of meditation should be investigated in future studies.

Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

ABSTRACT:
What is and what is not processed outside of conscious awareness is currently being increasingly investigated as the field begins to appreciate and understand more the involvement of different visual pathways in the brain. Our project aimed to determine the degree to which different object characteristics and objects are processed subconsciously relative to when they are processed consciously and to determine the contribution of the lateral occipital complex (LOC) during these processes. Several behavioural experiments were carried out. The experiments used continuous flash suppression (CFS) and more traditional visual masking paradigms to examine if the form, size, and orientation of objects, as well as words and emotionally salient stimuli, could be processed outside of conscious awareness. These experiments revealed that words and emotionally salient stimuli are processed outside of conscious awareness but not the most basic feature of objects, including their form, size and orientation, at least within the context of visual perception. Our functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment further revealed that LOC contributes to the processing of these features during conscious awareness. Taken together, our findings indicate that it is unlikely that it does so outside of conscious awareness. It seems that consciousness awareness is required for processing the basic features of objects, such as their form, size, and orientation, for perceptual purposes.

For more than 50 years, there has been evidence for greater consumption of sweet- foods in overweight humans and animals, relative to those that have a normal weight. Furthermore, it has long been suggested that energy deficit resulting from dieting, while moving the individual from a higher weight set point, would result in heightened susceptibility to palatable tastants, namely to sweet tastants. This was the motivation behind the first studies comparing sweet taste perception between individuals with obesity and those of a normal weight. These studies, using direct measures of taste, have been characterized by significant methodological heterogeneity, contributing towards variability in results and conclusions. Nevertheless, some of these findings have been used to support the theory that patients with obesity have decreased taste perception, particularly for sweet tastants. A similar hypothesis has been proposed regarding evidence for reduced brain dopamine receptors in obesity and, in both cases, it is proposed that increased food consumption, and associated weight gain, result from the need to increase sensory and brain stimulation. However, the available literature is not conclusive on the association between obesity and reduced sweet taste perception, with both negative and contradictory findings in comparisons between individuals with obesity and normal weight control subjects, as well as within-subject comparisons before and after bariatric surgery. Nevertheless, following either Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy, there is evidence of changes in taste perception, particularly for reward-related measures of sweet tastants, that should be further tested and confirmed in large samples, using consensual methodology.
