Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Surveys have been one of the most valuable research instruments for studying the psychological and social dimensions of parapsychology. Surveys seem to show that there is a high prevalence of spontaneous experiences in the general population. This article explores in a descriptive way the incidence of conflict produced by spontaneous psi experiences. Two hundred sixty Argentineans participated in the study; 58.8% were women, and 41.2% were men (M age = 44.65, SD = 14.26). Most of the participants were interested in parapsychology and in psi phenomena. Using questionnaires, the authors determined the type and frequency of participants' psi experiences and whether the experiences were conflictive or traumatic for them. They found that more than one third of the sample had had a psi experience such as a precognitive dream or a telepathic
perception. Two thirds said they had RSPK disturbances, and more than half claimed healing abilities. Near-death experiences and possession were considered to be confl ictive or traumatic by more than one third of the sample. One third of the respondents consulted family members, friends, and acquaintances, and over one quarter of the sample consulted a physician. The authors believe that these experiences mark a process of personal growth and of a sense of connection with the world. The experiences may be a healthy response to a hostile and alienating environment or context. Further analyses of the introspective accounts may yield more information about the experiencers' emotional reactions to their psi experiences. In a future report statistical analyses of the interaction between these variables will be presented.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The author, through an inquiry made to three populations (psychotherapists, clients and population in general), tries to achieve possible influences of the supernatural, mainly the religious, with mental health in general and psychotherapy in particular.
The results confirm the high rate of Portuguese religiosity, when it is understood in a traditional way (extrinsic religiosity). This doesn't happen when religiosity complies to bigger authenticity criteria (intrinsic religiosity). It also confirms the increasing tendency of living the belief in a spirituality context rather than in an official religious context.
Concerning to the supernatural/mental health interaction, it was verified that when psychotherapists and clients speak in a self-way there is a tendency to undervalue the supernatural influence in the health context. When they speak by others, they agree that the supernatural means are the most quested, chiefly the religious ones in chronical situations.
In the religion/psychotherapy binomial, the results expose the importance of the religious context verbalization, and, on the other hand, suggest that that doesn't happen frequently. The religious interference in crucial moments of the therapeutical process, such as decision, choice of the psychotherapist, and the alliance’s establishment, is undervalued in global terms, but overvalued by the minority who identifies themselves with the "intrinsic religiosity" kind.
The author ends his work with few questions suggested by the results of the present investigation and finishes saying that it is no longer licit to talk globally about religiosity versus mental health, but "kinds of religion" versus mental health and psychotherapy.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The original aim of psychology was to study and understand the spirit—from the Latin spiritus, literally “breath.” The limitations of scientific methods in the past favoured psychology's aloofness in terms of studying the “intangible,” while medicine developed methods of examining the body (Latin corpus: essential part). Until 20 years ago, knowledge of the localization of brain functions was limited to inferences from clinical observation of brain-lesioned patients or parallel studies of primate brains. Current neuroscience, with its integrative approach, is bringing together research from molecular through cognitive levels, and psychotherapy has benefited from these findings. Functional neuroimaging studies may make specific and more far-reaching contributions in this respect, since cerebral dynamics may be observed in vivo and in controlled situations. Methods such as single photon emission tomography, positron emission tomography, and functional magnetic resonance imaging have been able to evaluate the neural correlates involved in psychotherapy for individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder, major depression, social phobia, specific phobia, and post-traumatic disorder. Researchers have found that psychotherapy has the potential to modify dysfunctional neural circuits associated with these disorders. However, precautions are required in constructing feasible designs for neurofunctional investigations. This article reviews the 21 studies that have been published on the subject, and sets out the main advantages and limitations of the technologies used most frequently in protocols involving psychotherapies, and prerequisites for experimental designs. We also pose ways in which the findings from neuroimaging may produce knowledge to guide psychotherapeutic interventions by specifying what should be stimulated in these individuals in order to normalize deficient neural activities.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objective - Neuroimaging studies have highlighted important issues related to structural and functional brain changes found in sufferers of psychological trauma that may influence their ability to synthesize, categorize, and integrate traumatic memories.
Methods - Literature review and critical analysis and synthesis.
Results - Traumatic memories are diagnostic symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the dual representation theory posits separate memory systems subserving vivid re-experiencing (non-hippocampally dependent) versus declarative autobiographical memories of trauma (hippocampally dependent). But the psychopathological signs of trauma are not static over time, nor is the expression of traumatic memories. Multiple memory systems are activated simultaneously and in parallel on various occasions. Neural circuitry interaction is a crucial aspect in the development of a psychotherapeutic approach that may favour an integrative translation of the sensory fragments of the traumatic memory into a declarative memory system.
Conclusion - The relationship between neuroimaging findings and psychological approaches is discussed for greater efficacy in the treatment of psychologically traumatized patients.

Transcranial cortex stimulation as a novel approach for probing the neurobiology of dreams: Clinical and neuroethical implications

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In the last two decades considerable progress in brain imaging techniques have led to increasing interest into the neurobiology of sleep stages and dream contents. However, this fascinating research field poses several methodological challenges. The aim of this article is to discuss these challenges and to suggest novel approaches for probing the neurobiology of dream contents. Most of all, I suggest (i) to overcome the correlative limitations of neuroimaging techniques by applying transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) during different sleep stages in order to provide causal evidence for the role of specific brain regions in different dream contents, (ii) to control for possible perceptual and cognitive biases in dream reports such as hindsight bias, (iii) to combine computer assisted qualitative data analyses of dream reports with quantitative psychometric scales by applying logistic regression analyses and (iv) to consider possible implications for psychotherapy and neuroethics.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
A survey conducted with a random sample of psychologists, psychotherapists, and counsellors found that 44% (N = 100) of respondents had experienced synchronicity in the clinical setting, 67% (N = 150) of the sample felt that synchronicity events could be useful experiences in therapy, and 31% (N = 51) felt that they might be useful. Explanations that respondents gave for why synchronicity experiences occurred in therapy were significantly different according to professional group membership. For example, psychologists were significantly more likely than both counsellors (F (1, 122) = 4.763, p = .031) and psychotherapists (F (1, 150) = 6.569, p = .011) to agree that chance coincidence was an explanation for synchronicity, whereas, counsellors (F (1, 118) = 8.258, p = .005) and psychotherapists (F (1, 151) = 11.589, p = .001) were significantly more likely than psychologists to agree that a need for unconscious material to be expressed could be an explanation for synchronicity experiences in the clinical setting. This may have an impact on how practitioners respond to clients who report anomalous experiences. Interviews with a subsample of respondents identified three superordinate themes that illuminate how participants interpret and address synchronicity experiences in therapy: 'Sense of connectedness', 'Therapeutic process', and 'Professional issues'. Participants commented on how their experience of synchronicity in the clinical setting was a profound moment that facilitated growth in their clients and resulted in a stronger therapeutic relationship. Synchronicity experiences are perceived to be a useful ‘tool’ for the therapeutic process, which has important implications for training and supervision.

An investigation into the prevalence and phenomenology of synchronicity experiences in the clinical setting
Publication year: 2012

http://www.bial.com/imagem/Bial%20Sonhos%20Miolo_Total%20Bolsas.pdf
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES:
The purpose of this research was twofold. Firstly, to investigate how common synchronicity experiences are in the clinical setting and whether there are there any differences between clinicians in the reporting, interpretation or explanation of synchronicity experiences. Secondly, to explore the phenomenology of synchronicity experiences, focusing on how clinicians make sense of these experiences.
METHODS:
The research used a mixed-methods design. The first stage of the research involved a nationwide on-line survey which was completed by a representative sample of clinicians. The second stage involved a qualitative study using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA; Smith, 1996). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a sample of counsellors, psychologists and psychotherapists who reported synchronicity experiences in their therapeutic sessions.
RESULTS:
Preliminary analysis of the closed items from the survey suggests that clinicians are more likely to have experienced a synchronicity event if they are female, if they practise as a psychotherapist and have been working within their profession for ten years or more. Additionally, psychologists are more likely to report that synchronicities are chance coincidences that individuals ascribe meaning to, whereas psychotherapists tend to report that synchronicities occur because the client needs to discuss important unconscious material. A thematic content analysis on the open ended data is in progress and a more sophisticated quantitative analysis will be conducted on the closed item data once the survey has closed. Themes from the IPA study will be reported at the conference alongside participant extracts to illuminate how they are grounded in the data.
CONCLUSION/DISCUSSION:
An overwhelming outcome of the research is that synchronicity experiences are seen as a useful tool for therapy. Therefore, on a therapeutic level, it is necessary to explore what implications any reported synchronicity experiences have on the therapeutic relationship and clinical outcome of the client. Findings may support a more integrative approach to therapy that acknowledges anomalous experiences, such as synchronicity events, as subjectively real for the client. On a parapsychological level findings might shed some light on whether ESP is involved in synchronicity. If so, it would be an example of how psi might operate in a real world setting.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The present study aims to understand if there is a relation between the therapeutic collaboration and the psychophysiologic concordance. For that, simultaneous measures of the heart rate and the skin conductance were used in 9 clients diagnosed with Major Depression Disorder and their respective therapists, which used cognitive behavioural therapy during the first session of psychotherapy. The therapeutic collaboration indicates if during an interaction therapist and client coordinate or not their actions, existing or not collaboration, respectively, which was identified using the Therapeutic Collaboration Coding System. This system allows the identification of 18 kinds of interactive episodes, of which the 5 most frequent were selected. Psychophysiologic concordance between therapist and client was then calculated for each of these 5 episodes, in both psychophysiological measures. The heart rate results suggest that there is not a psychophysiologic concordance in both presence and absence of therapeutic collaboration. The skin conductance results suggest that there is a higher psychophysiologic concordance in the episodes where the therapeutic collaboration is present, compared to the episodes it isn’t. Results will be discussed regarding the empirical literature in this field and in terms of their clinical relevance as well.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The present article illustrates how developments in the cognitive neurosciences may contribute to the understanding of basic psychological processes and, simultaneously, translating this understanding to applied psychology, particularly in the clinical domain. We will illustrate with examples of current programmatic lines being carried out in the different subsections of the Neuropsychophysiology Lab at the School of Psychology at the University of Minho. The methodological potentialities available in neurophysiology, neuroimagiology, neuromodulation, psychophysiology, neurobiochemistry and neurogenetics will be exemplified in their applications to language (and the understanding of schizophrenia), social-cognitive functioning (and the understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders), executive functioning (and obsessive spectrum disorders), empathy (and its implications for psychotherapy), stress mechanisms (implications for the understanding of anxiety disorders) and, finally, animal.

Publication year: 2018

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objective: Little attention has been paid to the nuanced and complex decisions made in the clinical session context and how these decisions influence therapy effectiveness. Despite decades of research on the dual-processing systems, it remains unclear when and how intuitive and analytical reasoning influence the direction of the clinical session. Method: This paper puts forth a testable conceptual model, guided by an interdisciplinary integration of the literature, that posits that the clinical session context moderates the use of intuitive versus analytical reasoning. Results: A synthesis of studies examining professional best practices in clinical decision-making, empirical evidence from clinical judgment research, and the application of decision science theories indicate that intuitive and analytical reasoning may have profoundly different impacts on clinical practice and outcomes. Conclusions: The proposed model is discussed with respect to its implications for clinical practice and future research.

Os acontecimentos significativos e a relação terapêutica: Compreendendo a mudança em psicoterapia
Publication year: 2016

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
From the perspective of research on the process of change in psychotherapy, we used two main constructs, in a complementary way, to understand how change occurs in psychotherapy. One of these constructs is part of the approach of significant events developed by Elliott (1985) defining "significant event" as any moment located in therapy sessions, where the client experience at some level, their change. These moments consist of segments of therapy sessions, which refer to some interaction, action or specific reaction, and that involve a helpful therapeutic effect for the client improvement. Significant events research has been developed in order to understand the most productive moments of the therapeutic work and to guide the therapist’s actions. In addition, this approach assumes that these events cause helpful impacts that reflect the steps or processes by which the therapy produces the changes. The selection of the second studied construct is based on the assumption that the change in psychotherapy is through a good relationship between the therapist and client. A good alliance and a collaborative work between the dyad are often associated as predictors of good therapeutic outcomes. Furthermore, studies investigating the process of change consider interesting to understand how the therapeutic relationship contribute to change in therapy, and has been focused in the interactive microprocesses involved in the development of the relationship between therapist and client. Thus, in this thesis we assume the construct of the therapeutic collaboration, analyzed a microanalytical level, also as central. Several empirical studies reviewed in systematic review of literature – our first study, pointed to a lack in the literature on the process of change in the approach of significant events and the therapeutic relationship simultaneously. We consider that to understand the processes of change would be interesting to find out what happens in the dialectical working moment-to-moment between therapist and client and possible relationships with significant events and helpful impacts. However, our prior aim was to analyze the significant events and the helpful impacts, considering the complementarity of the client and therapist perspectives. We developed a System of helpful impact categories in the second study, which is included in this thesis. This system was applied in the third study, when we compared a good and a poor outcome cases and in the fourth study, when we relate the events and therapeutic exchanges. Using an inductive methodology, we categorize the events differentiating them according to three categories: the therapist actions, client actions, or joint actions. Using a deductive methodology from the system of helpful impact categories we categorized the helpful impact on the client’s change. In general, the results were consistent with the theory and it does not seem to be a pettern that differentiates the two perspectives, although it was possible to see a greater divergence between the client and therapist perspectives in the poor outcome case than good toucome case. In the fourth study we used the Therapeutic collaboration coding system in order to microanalyze, in a moment-to-moment level, the therapeutic exchanges among the dyad at the start of significant events. We analyzed the significant events using an inductive method and categorized the helpful impacts from the System of helpful impact categories. The results of this study suggest that interventions on the client level of potential development are very important in the promotion of significant events, as well as the safety or intolerable risk client experiences. This suggests that interventions outside the client development zone can also be significant, contributing to the process of change in psychotherapy if it occurs in a therapeutic climate characterized by safety and comfort.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The non-decomposable nature of a psychotherapy session favours intuitive judgments (see Hammond et al., 1987), which may have lingering effects on psychotherapists’ conceptualization of patients’ conditions. Specifically, the feeling of rightness associated to intuitive judgments (e.g., Koriat, 2012, Thompson et al., 2012) is likely to lead to overconfidence and to the use of a confirmatory hypothesis testing strategies. This, may compromise therapists’ evaluation of their clinical (intuitive) judgments. This tendency could be moderated if besides backward inferences (causal explanations) therapists were requested to make forward inferences (predictions) based on the same session information. Forward inferences are associated to more uncertainty than backward inferences (Hogarth, 2010), and are expected to be associated to an open mindset (e.g. Fiedler et al., 2005). Therefore, forward inferences could decrease overconfidence in the clinical judgment and promote non-confirmatory information seeking, thus contributing to therapy effectiveness. Two studies manipulate inference direction to test the aforementioned hypotheses. Study 1 used a between-participants design to manipulate backward or forward inferences about a fictional case in order to induce causal (closed) or predictive (open) mindsets. Dependent measures inclu-de confidence ratings (feelings of rightness) for each judgment and perceived judgments’ utility to prepare the following sessions. As expected, making backward inferences lead to a) higher feelings of rightness; and b) higher perceived utility. Study 2 (data collection is undergoing) was designed to replicate Study 1 and to shed light on the underlying psychological mechanisms. Specifically, psychology students are presented with two cases and requested to estimate the probability of causal factors for the client’s symptoms for one case and the probability of future effects of the client’s symptoms for the other case. After each clinical judgment, confidence (feeling of rightness) is measured. Subsequently, participants rate their willingness to include their judgments in the client’s report (Koriat & Goldsmith, 1996). Finally, participants information se-eking strategies are assessed by asking them to a) rate the likelihood of several diagnosis; and b) select the symptoms they would like to know more about in order to better understand the client’s case. Backward inferences (closed mindset) should lead to higher confidence and a more confirmatory information seeking strategies than forward inferences (open mindset). Feelings of rightness are expected to mediate the relation between causal reasoning (backward vs. forward inferences) and the information seeking strategy. Strategies to prevent overconfidence stemming from clinical intuitions are discussed.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Mental health practitioners should categorize behaviors representative of a mental health disorder as situational symptoms and not as dispositional traits (DSM-5). However, people tend to show a correspondence bias, to draw dispositional inferences from behavior, while neglecting alternative contextual explanations (Gilbert & Malone, 1995). But are able to discount (insufficiently) the role of the implied trait in the production of the behavior when a condition present in the situation could clearly induce the behavior by itself (Gilbert 2002). This correction process has been shown only with situational conditions that by themselves
would never bring to mind the inferred trait. However, psychotherapy contexts may posit the case where a situational condition such as a disorder diagnosis may not only afford a competing causal account of the behavior (situational symptom), but may also activate the implied trait. This case has never been contemplated.
Three studies were conducted to explore this question. We presented trait-implicative paragraphs that also matched a disorder diagnosis (e.g., lazy – depression), and manipulated the behavior account (neutral, physical impairment, disorder diagnosis). Main
dependent measures were participants’ trait ratings of the implicated traits (complemented by ratings of behavioral perceived stability, control and attribution). Studies 1 and 2 show that the disorder diagnosis lead to almost no trait discount. The first two studies may be accounting by the lack of knowledge from our participants about the nature of mental disorders. Study 3 replicates this finding with clinical psychologists suggesting that expertise does not decrease the correspondence inference. Together these studies suggest that, contrary to the spirit of the DSM-5, mental health disorders are not perceived as alternative behavior explanations. When a situational explanation may also activate the trait, people neglect its explanatory role for the behavior and make correspondence inferences. Further research should explore the causal links underlying this confound.

The present study manipulates, within participants, inference direction: backward vs. forward. Psychology students were presented with two fictional cases and were asked to make clinical judgments, consisting on estimating the probability of causal factors for client’s symptoms for one case; and the probability of several future effects of the client’s symptoms for the other. After each clinical judgment, participants rated their feelings of rightness, and the overall confidence after all judgments. Finally, information seeking strategies were measured through the ratings of likelihood of several diagnosis; the selection of additional
symptoms, from a list, to better understand the case; and the time spent reading additional information.
As expected, results suggest that backward inferences lead to higher confidence and more confirmatory information seeking strategies than forward inferences. Interestingly, backward inferences lead to more diagnostic information seeking strategy. Further research on the mediator role of confidence and therapists’ metacognition on information seeking strategies are discussed.

The role of a non-decomposable task in the integration of a diagnosis scheme and the effects in confirmation bias
Publication year: 2017

http://www.uib.no/sites/w3.uib.no/files/attachments/program_cdm-workshop.pdf
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In a psychotherapy session, it is very difficult to decompose the flux of information in its parts. Such non-decomposable task, favors holistic and intuitive judgment processes (Hammond et al, 1987), which constrains the interpretation of subsequent information along the lines of the firstly activated schemes (Eyal et al., 2011). Thus, we hypothesize that nondecomposable
tasks favor primacy effects and often lead to confirmatory biases. In contrast, a task decomposed and analysed in its parts is expected to elicit a more deliberative reasoning, counteracting primacy effects and leading more often to disconfirmatory strategies of hypothesis testing.
To test these hypotheses, in two studies, we presented participants with an audio excerpt of a fictional client describing her depression symptoms, manipulated the decomposability of the excerpt. In the non-decomposable condition, participants were presented a case (without interruptions) and asked a final global clinical judgment (risk to develop psychopathology based in all behaviors). In the decomposable condition, participants heard the case in 6 smaller parts, completing, after each excerpt, an interim judgment about the likelihood of developing psychopathology based in that specific behavior. After the 6 excerpts,
participants made the same final global clinical judgment. Following this, participants rated the likelihood of three possible diagnoses. We manipulated within-participants the order of the presentation of depression symptoms in the beginning (depression scheme activated) vs. end (no activation of depression scheme) of the case.
Results show that when a scheme is activated (depression symptoms presented in the beginning), understanding the case in a non-decomposable way leads to higher ratings only to depression, than participants in the decomposable condition, which gave higher ratings to two diagnosis. This suggests that making a non-decomposable task lead to a more confirmatory bias. Implications to therapy session will be discussed.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

The impact of task decomposability and scheme activation in hypothesis testing strategy

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A non-decomposable task, such as a clinical session, favors holistic and intuitive judgment processes (Hammond et al, 1987), constraining the interpretation of subsequent information according to the activated scheme (Eyal et al., 2011). Thus, we hypothesize that non-decomposable tasks favor primacy effects and lead to confirmatory biases, when comparing to decomposed tasks. In two studies, we manipulated the decomposability (uninterrupted vs. interrupted) of an audio excerpt of a client describing depression symptoms. We measure hypotheses testing strategy through participants’ ratings of the likelihood of three possible diagnoses. Results show that when a scheme is activated, understanding the case in a non-decomposable way leads to more confirmatory strategy than in the decomposable condition. Implications to therapy session will be discussed.
