The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Recent studies suggest that lucid dreaming (awareness of dreaming while dreaming) might be associated with increased brain activity over frontal regions during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. By applying transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), we aimed to manipulate the activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during REM sleep to increase dream lucidity. Nineteen participants spent three consecutive nights in a sleep laboratory. On the second and third nights they randomly received either 1 mA tDCS for 10 min or sham stimulation during each REM period starting with the second one. According to the participants’ self-ratings, tDCS over the DLPFC during REM sleep increased lucidity in dreams. The effects, however, were not strong and found only in frequent lucid dreamers. While this indicates some preliminary support for the involvement of the DLPFC in lucid dreaming, further research, controlling for indirect effects of stimulation and including other brain regions, is needed.

INTRODUCTION:
Several behavioural correlates of EEG theta activity were reported previously. Some of these correlates
were shown to be trait-like in nature belonging to the affective domain. Frontal theta activity measured during wakeful resting conditions was found to be a negative correlate of anxiety-related measures mainly. However, knowledge on the trait-like affective correlates of REM sleep theta activity is sparse. Based on the intimate relationship between REM sleep and attachment, as well as on the neurobiology of this sleep state we hypothesize that REM sleep frontal theta activity is negatively correlated with measures of attachment anxiety (AAn). As Heart Rate Variability (HRV) as an indicator of the sympatovagal balance was shown to be related to theta activity, we also hypothesized that REM sleep HRV is related to both theta activity and AAn.
METHODS:
35 subjects (20 men, Mage=31.6 years) slept two consecutive nights in the sleep laboratory. Polysomnography covered EEG, EOG, and ECG. Power spectra of whole second night NREM and REM sleep
EEG as well as spectral HRV measures of the ECG in NREM and REM sleep were calculated. Subjects filled
the Relationship Scales Questionnaire measuring adult attachment along the dimensions of AA and attachment avoidance (AAv). Pearson correlations between log-normalized 0.25 Hz wide EEG power bins and attachment, between log-normalized EEG power and HRV, as well as between HRV and attachment were calculated.
RESULTS:
Significant negative correlations between REM sleep EEG power and AAn were observed at frequencies pertaining to the theta range (4.75-7.5 Hz) in the fronto-central and temporal regions. These correlations were specific to REM sleep as NREM sleep theta EEG power was found to be uncorrelated with AAn. The hypothesized correlations between REM sleep theta EEG power and HRV, or AAn and HRV were not supported by our data. Unpredicted correlations were negative between AAn and REM sleep frontal beta (12.25-20.25 Hz) power, and positive between AAv and NREM sleep alpha/sigma (8-13 Hz) power.
DISCUSSION:
Frontal theta activity and HRV are unrelated, perhaps physiologically uncoupled during REM sleep. REM sleep theta EEG, but not HRV is negatively associated with questionnaire measures of AAn.

Aspects of attachment insecurity have gained interest in association of sleep parameters, especially sleep disorders. Most studies are carried out on children using subjective measures of sleep assessed by parents. Little attention is given to REM sleep and dreams in relation to attachment security, which could provide a reasonable association considering the presumed role of REM sleep and dreams in emotion regulation and offline emotional reprocessing. According to some studies, daytime distress and trait anxiety measures are directly associated with sleep features and dream emotions, especially nightmare frequency. If attachment
insecurity is related to dream affects and negative dream frequency is investigated in this study. Results showed significant connections between negative dream affect and attachment categories, which was especially true for preoccupied and fearful attachment, both characterized by high attachment anxiety. According to post hoc testing attachment groups with high attachment anxiety differed significantly from the groups with low attachment anxiety. Attachment anxiety turned out to be connected to nightmare frequency and the intensity of dream affect’s impact on daytime mood. As attachment insecurity is associated with less effective emotional and behavioral responses to stress, poorer coping mechanisms and altered illness behavior, results can be interpreted as the appearance of these qualities in nighttime symptoms. Diminished coping with negative emotions or enhanced negativity in subjects with high attachment anxiety could emerge in form of negative dreaming and higher nightmare frequency. As a consequence, negative dream emotions turn down daytime mood, which is less likely to be regulated by compensatory coping mechanisms. Early traumatization might be a mediator between attachment and nightmares, as both nightmares and insecure attachment are often connected to early trauma of the child. Another possible explanation of the connection between attachment anxiety and negative dreams is rooted in McNamara’s attachment theory of REM sleep, which describes diversified evidence to support the essential role of REM sleep in the conformation and subsistence of attachment behavior.

The relationship between time in dreams and real time has intrigued scientists for centuries. The question if actions in dreams take the same time as in wakefulness can be tested by using lucid dreams where the dreamer is able to mark time intervals with prearranged eye movements that can be objectively identified in EOG recordings. Previous research showed an equivalence of time for counting in lucid dreams and in wakefulness (LaBerge, 1985; Erlacher and Schredl, 2004), but Erlacher and Schredl (2004) found that performing squats required about 40% more time in lucid dreams than in the waking state. To find out if the task modality, the task length, or the task complexity results in prolonged times in lucid dreams, an experiment with three different conditions was conducted. In the first condition, five proficient lucid dreamers spent one to three non-consecutive nights in the sleep laboratory. Participants counted to 10, 20, and 30 in wakefulness and in their lucid dreams. Lucidity and task intervals were time stamped with left-right-left-right eye movements. The same procedure was used for the second condition where eight lucid dreamers had to walk 10, 20, or 30 steps. In the third condition, eight lucid dreamers performed a gymnastics routine, which in the waking state lasted the same time as walking 10 steps. Again, we found that performing a motor task in a lucid dream requires more time than in wakefulness. Longer durations in the dream state were present for all three tasks, but significant differences were found only for the tasks with motor activity (walking and gymnastics). However, no difference was found for relative times (no disproportional time effects) and a more complex motor task did not result in more prolonged times. Longer durations in lucid dreams might be related to the lack of muscular feedback or slower neural processing during REM sleep. Future studies should explore factors that might be associated with prolonged durations.

The mechanisms underlying hyperarousal, the key symptom of insomnia, have remained elusive, hampering cause-targeted treatment. Recently, restless rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep emerged as a robust signature of sleep in insomnia. Given the role of REM sleep in emotion regulation, we hypothesized that restless REM sleep could interfere with the overnight resolution of emotional distress, thus contributing to accumulation of arousal. Participants (n = 1,199) completed questionnaires on insomnia severity, hyperarousal, self-conscious emotional distress, and thought-like nocturnal mentation that was validated to be a specific proxy for restless REM sleep (selective fragmentation: R = 0.57, P < 0.001; eye movement density: R = 0.46, P < 0.01) in 32 polysomnographically assessed participants. The experience of distress lasting overnight increased with insomnia severity (ß = 0.29, P < 10-23), whereas short-lasting distress did not (ß = -0.02, P = 0.41). Insomnia severity was associated with hyperarousal (ß = 0.47, P < 10-63) and with the thought-like nocturnal mentation that is specifically associated with restless REM sleep (ß = 0.31, P < 10-26). Structural equation modeling showed that 62.4% of the association between these key characteristics of insomnia was mediated specifically by reduced overnight resolution of emotional distress. The model outperformed all alternative mediation pathways. The findings suggest that restless REM sleep reflects a process that interferes with the overnight resolution of distress. Its accumulation may promote the development of chronic hyperarousal, giving clinical relevance to the role of REM sleep in emotion regulation in insomnia, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.

BACKGROUND
There have been claims throughout history that the consideration of dreams can result in personal realizations and insight.
AIM
To assess insight resulting from discussing Rapid Eye Movement (REM) and non-REM stage 2 (N2) dreams collected in the sleep laboratory, with discussion of daydreams as a control, and electrophysiological correlates of insight.
METHOD
31 participants slept in the sleep laboratory and were awakened for REM and N2 dream reports, and cued for a daydream report. Participants discussed their dream and daydream reports with experimenters who had not been involved in collecting the dreams and daydreams, and scored the discussions for insight obtained.
RESULTS
There were no insight differences between discussing REM and N2 dreams. Discussing dreams led to higher scores on the exploration-insight measure than did discussing daydreams. The differences were related to the learning of what the report means in terms of waking life issues.
CONCLUSIONS
Despite electrophysiological and functional differences between REM and N2 sleep, dreams from these stages did not differ in exploration-insight scores, but did exceed exploration-insight for the discussion of daydreams. Daydreams did not show the memory-consolidation related delayed incorporation of waking life events that has been found for REM dreams (van Rijn et al., 2016, 2018). A second main paper is under review, with preliminary results in Blagrove et al. (2016) of significant electrophysiological correlates of EEG theta and insight scores for N2 dreams, in addition to the between condition insight results. Dream insight might result from functional sleep processes, or from non-functional decreased control of cognition during dreams.

Thirty one participants (15 female, 16 male) slept in the sleep laboratory and were woken 10 minutes into REM and N2 sleep for
dream reports. Participants also gave a daydream report before falling asleep. All participants later discussed their dream and
daydream reports with two experimenters who had not been involved in the report collection. Each discussion took 30–40 min and followed the standard Ullman method of group dream discussion (Edwards et al., 2013, 2015, Front Psychol), which aims to identify and explore recent waking life sources for dream content. After each discussion participants completed the 14-item Gains from Dream Interpretation (GDI) questionnaire (Heaton et al., 1998, J Couns Psychol). The GDI exploration-insight subscale assesses discovery of recent waking life mnemonic sources of the dream and also personal insight about waking life that results from the dream discussion, and is adapted here to cover dream and daydream discussions. There were no exploration-insight differences between discussing REM and N2 dream reports, but, as hypothesised, discussing dreams did lead to significantly higher scores on exploration-insight than did discussing daydreams (means = 7.60 and 7.13 respectively, SDs = 0.88 and 0.99; P = 0.002). Dream discussions were scored significantly higher than daydream discussions on questionnaire items: ‘I learned things
that I would not have thought of on my own’ (P = 0.002); ‘I learned more about what this (day) dream meant for me personally during the session’ (P < 0.001); and, ‘I learned more about issues in my waking life from working with the (day) dream’ (P < 0.05).

The incorporation of waking life event details into dreams has been found to be highest 1–2 and 5–7 nights after events, termed the day residue and dream-lag effects, respectively. The dream-lag effect is specific for Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep dreams, and not for N2 or Slow Wave Sleep dreams, and specific for personally significant events (PSEs), and not major daily activities (MDAs) or major concerns (MCs). The dream-lag effect has been proposed to reflect sleep-dependent memory consolidation, although it may instead have a non-functional emotional residue basis. The present study aimed to examine whether this delayed incorporation occurs for daydreams. Participants (n = 31) kept a daily log for 10 days, reporting MDAs, PSEs, and MCs, to which dream and daydream reports were compared. In the sleep laboratory, dream reports were collected after 10 minutes of REM and N2 sleep. Daydream reports were elicited before participants initially fell asleep, after 10 minutes in bed while remaining awake. A day-residue effect was found for MCs incorporated into daydreams, supporting a proposed function for daydreams of processing current concerns. No dream-lag effect was found for daydreams or N2 dreams. The REM sleep dream-lag effect for PSEs was partially replicated, with incorporations of PSEs from 5–7 days before the sleep laboratory night being significantly greater than from 8–9 days before the laboratory night. The results indicate that daydreams might not have the same function or time course of incorporations as do REM sleep dreams, although further replications of the REM sleep dream-lag are needed.

This study investigates the time course of incorporation of waking life experiences into daydreams. Thirty-one participants kept a diary for 10 days, reporting major daily activities (MDAs), personally significant events (PSEs) and major concerns (MCs). They were then cued for daydream, Rapid Eye Movement (REM) and N2 dream reports in the sleep laboratory. There was a higher incorporation into daydreams of MCs from the previous two days (day-residue effect), but no day-residue effect for MDAs or PSEs, supporting a function for daydreams of processing current concerns. A day-residue effect for PSEs and the delayed incorporation of PSEs from 5 to 7 days before the dream (the dream-lag effect) have previously been found for REM dreams. Delayed incorporation was not found in this study for daydreams. Daydreams might thus differ in function from REM sleep dreams. However, the REM dream-lag effect was not replicated here, possibly due to design differences from previous studies.

The effects of emotionally valenced events on sleep physiology are well studied in humans and laboratory rodents. However, little is known about these effects in other species, despite the fact that several sleep characteristics differ across species and thus limit the generalizability of such findings. Here we studied the effect of positive and negative social experiences on sleep macrostructure in dogs, a species proven to be a good model of human social cognition. A non-invasive polysomnography method was used to collect data from pet dogs (n = 16) participating in 3-hour-long sleep occasions. Before sleep, dogs were exposed to emotionally positive or negative social interactions (PSI or NSI) in a within-subject design. PSI consisted of petting and ball play, while NSI was a mixture of separation, threatening approach and still face test. Sleep macrostructure was markedly different between pre-treatment conditions, with a shorter sleep latency after NSI and a redistribution of the time spent in the different sleep stages. Dogs' behaviour during pre-treatments was related to the macrostructural difference between the two occasions, and was further modulated by individual variability in personality. This result provides the first direct evidence that emotional stimuli affect subsequent sleep physiology in dogs.

Dogs (Canis familiaris) are excellent models of human behavior as during domestication they have adapted to the same environment as humans. There have been many comparative studies on dog behavior; however, several easily measurable and analyzable psychophysiological variables that are widely used in humans are still largely unexplored in dogs. One such measure is rapid eye movement density (REMD) during REM sleep. The aim of this study was to test the viability of measuring REMD in dogs and to explore the relationship between the REMD and different variables (sex, age, body size, and REM sleep duration). Fifty family dogs of different breeds and ages (from 6 months to 15 years old) participated in a 3-h non-invasive polysomnography recording, and the data for 31 of them could be analyzed. The signal of the electro-oculogram (EOG) was used to detect the rapid eye movements during REM sleep, and REMD was calculated based on these data. The duration of REM sleep had a quadratic effect on REMD. Subjects' REMD increased with age, but only in male dogs with short REM sleep duration. Furthermore, in the case of dogs with short REM sleep, the interaction of body mass and REM sleep duration had a significant effect on REMD. No such effects were found in dogs with long REM duration. These results suggest that relationships may exist between REMD and several different variables.

OBJECTIVE
Narcolepsy type 1 widely affects the architecture of sleep with frequent fast transition to REM sleep at both nighttime and daytime sleep onset. The occurrence of repeated sleep onset REM periods over the Multiple Sleep Latency Test offers a unique opportunity to identify EEG patterns predictive of successful dream recall after short periods composed of only REM or NREM sleep. It also permits to disentangle state- from trait-like differences in dream recall, by using a within-subjects design.
METHODS
A consecutive series of 115 first-diagnosed drug-free adult narcolepsy-type 1 patients underwent Multiple Sleep Latency Tests and were asked after each nap opportunity if they had or had not a dream experience. Scalp EEG power and a specific index of cortical activation (delta/beta power ratio), obtained from naps of 43 patients with both presence and absence of dream recall in the same sleep stage, were compared separately for REM and NREM sleep.
RESULTS
Successful dream recall was associated with an increased EEG desynchronization in both REM and NREM over partially overlapping cortical areas. Compared to unsuccessful recall, it showed (1) lower delta power over centro-parietal areas during both stages, (2) higher beta power in the same cortical areas during NREM, and (3) lower values in the delta/beta ratio during NREM in most scalp locations.
INTERPRETATION
A more activated electrophysiological milieu in both REM and NREM sleep promotes dream recall, strengthening the notion that the parietal areas are crucial not only in generating dream experience, as shown in brain-damaged patients, but also in the memory processing leading to recall.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Dream experience (DE) represents a fascinating condition linked to emotional processes and the human inner world. Although the overlap between REM sleep and dreaming has been overcome, several studies point out that emotional and perceptually vivid contents are more frequent when reported upon awakenings from this sleep stage. Actually, it is well-known that REM sleep plays a pivotal role in the processing of salient and emotional waking-life experiences, strongly contributing to the emotional memory consolidation. In this vein, we highlighted that, to some extent, neuroimaging studies showed that the processes that regulate dreaming and emotional salience in sleep mentation share similar neural substrates of those controlling emotions during wakefulness. Furthermore, the research on EEG correlates of the presence/absence of DE and the results on EEG pattern related to the incorporated memories converged to assign a crucial role of REM theta oscillations in emotional re-processing. In particular, the theta activity is involved in memory processes during REM sleep as well as during the waking state, in line with the continuity hypothesis. Also, the gamma activity seems to be related to emotional processes and dream recall as well as to lucid dreams. Interestingly, similar EEG correlates of DE have been found in clinical samples when nightmares or dreams occur. Research on clinical samples revealed that promoting the rehearsal of frightening contents aimed to change them is a promising method to treat nightmares, and that lucid dreams are associated with an attenuation of nightmares. In this view, DE can defuse emotional traumatic memories when the emotional regulation and the fear extinction mechanisms are compromised by traumatic and frightening events. Finally, dreams could represent a sort of simulation of reality, providing the possibility to create a new scenario with emotional mastery elements to cope with dysphoric items included in nightmares. In addition, it could be hypothesized that the insertion of bizarre items besides traumatic memories might be functional to “impoverish” the negative charge of the experiences.

To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND
Neural correlates of dream recall (DR) in elderly people are still largely unknown. Previous studies in older adults found a general decrease in DR and with the notable exception of Chellappa et al. (2009) no investigations have been carried out on EEG correlates of DR in aging.
AIM
Our study aimed to investigate whether specific EEG patterns during sleep in elderly predict a subsequent DR.
Method: 40 healthy older and 40 young adults were recorded with polysomnography: 21 older subjects were awakened from REM sleep and 19 older subjects from stage 2 NREM sleep; 20 young subjects were awakened from REM sleep and 20 young subjects from stage 2. DRs were collected upon morning awakening from both stages. EEG power spectra of the total sleep and of the last 5 min were calculated by Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The algorithm to detect oscillatory activity was applied on the last 5 min of sleep.
RESULTS
The two-way ANOVAs Recall X Age performed on the EEG power bands showed no main effect of Recall neither significant interaction for REM sleep as well as NREM sleep. Only a significant main effect of Age was observed both for total sleep and the last 5 min, during REM and NREM sleep. The analysis of oscillatory activity revealed that frontal theta oscillations during the last 5 min of REM sleep are related to DR, without any age-effect.
CONCLUSIONS
Our result replicated the previous evidence in young subjects and it is completely new for older individuals, showing that the theta oscillations play a pivotal role in the retrieval of dreaming also in this population. The findings are in line with the Continuity Hypothesis between waking and sleep mental functioning from a neurobiological viewpoint.

Nightmares are characterized by the experience of strong negative emotions occurring mainly during REM sleep. Some people suffer from nightmare disorder, which is defined by the repeated occurrence of nightmares and by significant distress in wakefulness. Yet, whether frequent nightmares relate to a general increase in emotional reactivity or arousal during sleep remains unclear. To address this question, we recorded heartbeat-evoked potentials (HEPs) during wakefulness, NREM and REM sleep in patients with nightmare disorder and healthy participants. The HEP represents a cortical (EEG) response to the heartbeat and indexes brain-body interactions, such as interoceptive processing and intrinsic levels of arousal. HEP amplitude is typically increased during states of high emotional arousal and motivation, and is decreased in depression. Here we compared the amplitude of HEPs between nightmare patients and healthy controls separately during AWAKE, NREM, REM periods, and found higher HEP amplitude in nightmare patients compared to healthy controls over a cluster of frontal regions only during REM sleep. This effect was not paralleled by any group difference in cardiac control measures (e.g. heart rate variability, interbeat interval). These findings corroborate the notion that nightmares are essentially a REM pathology and suggest that increased emotional arousal during REM sleep, as measured by HEP, is a physiological condition responsible for frequent nightmares. This result also supports that HEP may be used as a biomarker of increased emotional and sensory processing during REM sleep in these patients.
