In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Background:
Currently, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is dependent on the investigative team to manually prescribe, or demarcate, the desired tissue volume-of-interest. The need for a new method to automate precise voxel placements is warranted to improve the utility and interpretability of MRS data.
New method:
We propose and validate robust and real-time methods to automate MRS voxel placement using functionally defined coordinates within the prefrontal cortex. Data were collected and analyzed using two independent prospective studies: 1) two independent imaging days with each consisting of a multi-session sandwich design (MRS data only collected on one of the days determined based on scan time) and 2) a longitudinal design. Participants with fibromyalgia syndrome (N=50) and major depressive disorder (N=35) underwent neuroimaging. MRS acquisitions were acquired at 3-tesla. Evaluation of the reproducibility of spatial location and tissue segmentation was assessed for: 1) manual, 2) semi-automated, and 3) automated voxel prescription approaches RESULTS:
Variability of voxel grey and white matter tissue composition was reduced using automated placement protocols. Spatially, post- to pre-voxel center-of-gravity distance was reduced and voxel overlap increased significantly across datasets using automated compared to manual procedures
COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHODS:
Manual prescription, the current standard in the field, can produce inconsistent data across repeated acquisitions. Using automated voxel placement, we found reduced variability and more consistent voxel placement across multiple acquisitions CONCLUSIONS:
These results demonstrate the within subject reliability and reproducibility of a method for reducing variability introduced by spatial inconsistencies during MRS acquisitions. The proposed method is a meaningful advance toward improved consistency of MRS data in neuroscience and can be utilized for multi-session and longitudinal studies.

Background: Resting state (RS) brain activity is inherently non-stationary. Hidden semi-Markov Models (HsMM) can characterize continuous RS data as a sequence of recurring and distinct brain states along with their spatiotemporal dynamics.
New method: Recent explorations suggest that HsMM state dynamics in the alpha frequency band link to auditory hallucination proneness (HP) in non-clinical individuals. The present study aimed to replicate these findings to elucidate robust neural correlates of hallucinatory vulnerability. Specifically, we aimed to investigate the reproducibility of HsMM states across different data sets and within-data set variants as well as the replicability of the association between alpha brain state dynamics and HP.
Results: We found that most brain states are reproducible in different data sets, confirming that the HsMM characterized robust and generalizable EEG RS dynamics on a sub-second timescale. Brain state topographies and temporal dynamics of different within-data set variants showed substantial similarities and were robust against reduced data length and number of electrodes. However, the association with HP was not directly reproducible across data sets. Comparison with existing methods: The HsMM optimally leverages the high temporal resolution of EEG data and overcomes time-domain restrictions of other state allocation methods.
Conclusion: The results indicate that the sensitivity of brain state dynamics to capture individual variability in HP may depend on the data recording characteristics and individual variability in RS cognition, such as mind wandering. Future studies should consider that the order in which eyes-open and eyes-closed RS data are acquired directly influences an individual’s attentional state and generation of spontaneous thoughts, and thereby might mediate the link to hallucinatory vulnerability.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Recent studies have used big neuroimaging datasets to answer an important question: how many subjects are required for reproducible brain-wide association studies? These data-driven approaches could be considered a framework for testing the reproducibility of several neuroimaging models and measures. Here we test part of this framework, namely estimates of statistical errors of univariate brain-behaviour associations obtained from resampling large datasets with replacement. We demonstrate that reported estimates of statistical errors are largely a consequence of bias introduced by random effects when sampling with replacement close to the full sample size. We show that future meta-analyses can largely avoid these biases by only resampling up to 10% of the full sample size. We discuss implications that reproducing mass-univariate association studies requires tens-of-thousands of participants, urging researchers to adopt other methodological approaches.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

In this study, we tested whether it was possible to use an online psi task to identify psi-talented individuals who could produce reliably significant results in repeated tests. The study aimed to develop psi tasks on an online platform, analyse data to identify talented individuals among a large sample (n = 1,014), select the top 50 performing individuals (talents), assess their consistent performance, and evaluate potential personality predictors. We found that retest performance on two tasks was above chance expectations, but this finding did not hold up after correcting for multiple comparisons. In selected analyses, we also found that conscientiousness had a negative correlation with higher performance, while agreeableness had a positive correlation. We suggest that increasing the number of participants could yield more robust results.
