Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This thesis focuses on the experience of voice hearing and effects on mental health and wellbeing. It is composed of two separate papers: a systematic literature review and an empirical paper.
Section one, the paper titled “Understanding indicators of clinical need and methods of reducing distress for children who hear voices: A Systematic Literature Review” aimed to establish the current research base which focuses specifically on the experience of voice hearing in children and the factors related to their current emotional health. The paper synthesised 13 quantitative studies. The majority of studies looked at different factors and two studies detailed interventions. The findings of the review suggest traumatic life events and cognitive appraisals may be important in the experience of distressing voice hearing.
However no firm conclusions could be drawn due to small sample sizes and the variable quality of the included articles. There was some indication of CBT strategies being useful in mitigating distress however more evidence is needed. More research taking a consistent approach needs to be conducted in this area to establish the factors that may make some children who hear voices more vulnerable to experiencing distress and how they can be supported to manage their experiences.
Section two, the empirical paper titled, “‘I have finally realised I’m not crazy’: A narrative analysis of mental health and mediumship’”, aimed to explore how unusual experiences develop over time and how these experiences come to be seen as mediumistic. A data set of 14 interviews with mediums originating from a qualitative, pluralistic project was re-analysed using narrative analysis to consider how mediums view their experiences in relation to their own mental health. Findings show that mediums’ early experiences were often traumatic and builds on previous research by demonstrating that attempts to fit in with social norms particularly around ‘healthy’ and ‘sane’ increases this trauma and distress. Participants sought out support from key figures, and validating responses were important for them to accept and establish their mediumistic identity.

In recent years, machine learning (ML) has been a promising approach in the research of treatment outcome prediction in psychosis. In this study, we reviewed ML studies using different neuroimaging, neurophysiological, genetic, and clinical features to predict antipsychotic treatment outcomes in patients at different stages of schizophrenia. Literature available on PubMed until March 2022 was reviewed. Overall, 28 studies were included, among them 23 using a single-modality approach and 5 combining data from multiple modalities. The majority of included studies considered structural and functional neuroimaging biomarkers as predictive features used in ML models. Specifically, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) features contributed to antipsychotic treatment response prediction of psychosis with good accuracies. Additionally, several studies found that ML models based on clinical features might present adequate predictive ability. Importantly, by examining the additive effects of combining features, the predictive value might be improved by applying multimodal ML approaches. However, most of the included studies presented several limitations, such as small sample sizes and a lack of replication tests. Moreover, considerable clinical and analytical heterogeneity among included studies posed a challenge in synthesizing findings and generating robust overall conclusions. Despite the complexity and heterogeneity of methodology, prognostic features, clinical presentation, and treatment approaches, studies included in this review suggest that ML tools may have the potential to predict treatment outcomes of psychosis accurately. Future studies need to focus on refining feature characterization, validating prediction models, and evaluate their translation in real-world clinical practice.

This review provides an exploration of trance states, covering their phenomenology, neural mechanisms, and clinical uses. Trance states, present in diverse cultural contexts from shamanic practices to modern adaptations, have recently captured the interest of researchers and clinicians. Here, we delve into the phenomenological aspects of trance experiences, highlighting the most common features. Employing cuttingedge neuroscientific methods, we also report findings on the neural underpinnings of trance states. Furthermore, we look into the practical applications of such states in clinical settings. By bridging subjective experiences, neuroscience, and clinical relevance, this review enhances our understanding of trance states and their possible uses.

A neuroscientific model of near-death experiences

Near-death experiences (NDEs) are episodes of disconnected consciousness that typically occur in situations that involve an actual or potential physical threat or are perceived as such, and the experiences are characterized by a rich content with prototypical mystical features. Several explanatory theories for NDEs have been proposed, ranging from psychological or neurophysiological to evolutionary models. However, these concepts were often formulated independently, and, owing to the fragmented nature of research in this domain, integration of these ideas has been limited. Lines of empirical evidence from different areas of neuroscience, including non-human studies, studies investigating psychedelic-induced mystical experiences in humans, and research on the dying brain, are now converging to provide a comprehensive explanation for NDEs. In this Review, we discuss processes that might underlie the rich conscious experience in NDEs, mostly focusing on prototypical examples and addressing both the potential psychological mechanisms and neurophysiological changes, including cellular and electrophysiological brain network modifications and alterations in neurotransmitter release. On the basis of this discussion, we propose a model for NDEs that encompasses a cascade of concomitant psychological and neurophysiological processes within an evolutionary framework. We also consider how NDE research can inform the debate on the emergence of consciousness in near-death conditions that arise before brain death.
