The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

We tested this hypothesis by comparing the effects of 1-Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over prefrontal regions on the performances of two temporal preparation tasks, one using symbolic cues (short vs. long lines) and the other using regular rhythms (fast vs. slow pace) to indicate when (early vs. late) a target would be most likely to appear. Stimulation site was either the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), right DLPFC, or sham condition. The results showed that frontal TMS produced differential effects as a function of type of cuing. In symbolic cuing, TMS on either left or right frontal sites (vs. sham) increased temporal orienting effects by reducing reaction times in valid trials. In rhythmic cuing, however, frontal TMS did not influence performance. This dissociation between two forms of temporal preparation suggests a specific role for the DLPFC in the ability of temporal orienting, but not in preparation guided by rhythms.

In rhythmic cuing, however, frontal TMS did not influence performance. These findings: 1) dissociated between temporal preparation guided by cues vs. rhythms, 2) suggest a role of bilateral DLPFC (and inhibitory processes) in the ability for temporal orienting, and 3) confirmed the automatic nature of temporal regularity, which is more robust to interference than temporal orienting.

Rhythm perception in children: The roles of age, sex and prematurity

ABSTRACT:
Rhythm and melody are at the basis of music organization. They enable acoustic patterns to be organized in highly structured auditory phrases that can effortlessly be perceived, recognized and comprehended in our mind/brain. Scientific evidence suggests that musical rhythm perception is a complex process that involves more than the auditory cortex, and raises the possibility that rhythm processing is part of a wider mechanism that may also be involved in language production and perception. As such, rhythm perception is more than a component of musicality, and the failure to perceive rhythm might be relevant in domains other than music. In order to better understand the development of rhythm perception, the present study examined agerelated changes in the perception of rhythm while exploring the impact of sex and prematurity. Musical excerpts varying in rhythm only (same note percussion phrases) or in melody and rhythm (rhythmic and rhythmicmelodic sets respectively) were presented to children aged 6 to 13 years (N = 177, of which 21 with gestational age less than 37 weeks; 103 female) and young adults aged 18/19 years (N = 29, 4 with < 37 weeks’ gestational age; 27 female). Participants listened to pairs of musical excerpts (20 stimuli pairs in each set), and indicated whether they sounded the same or different using a grid in a pencil-paper response. In each set, eight pairs were identical and twelve were different (the difference was always in rhythm). The pairs of rhythmic patterns were the same in both sets. The results revealed an age-related progression in accuracy that differed in rhythmic and rhythmic-melodic excerpts: there was a small advantage of rhythm-only pairs that reached adult-like level at 11
years, whereas performance gains in the rhythmic-melodic pairs continued till adulthood. There was no main effect of sex. Prematurity was associated with a performance disadvantage that appeared to decrease with age; however, the small number of subjects precludes drawing firm conclusions on the role of prematurity. We compare our results with findings from earlier studies and discuss how both contribute to elucidate rhythm perception and factors that impact on its development.

Music and language are outstanding examples of the human ability to make sense out of sound. During the last decades, several studies have suggested a relation of music abilities with early language and reading skills in children. Nevertheless, it remains unclear which aspects of musical abilities might indeed be involved in this presumed relationship. Here we investigated the relation between reading fluency and music processing in school-age children. Our goal was to contrast rhythm and melody aspects in music processing. Our results revealed a positive association between different measures of reading skill (fluency, word identification, and sentence comprehension) with rhythm discrimination, but not with melody discrimination. Though preliminary, these findings are consistent with the notion that rhythm and timing are key mechanisms in music as well as in language.

Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

Recent studies indicate that the rhythmic skills of adults are not unitary: rhythm sequencing dissociates from synchronization with a beat, suggesting that different cognitive functions subtend these two skills. We examined the performance of 72 children (6.32 +/- 0.35 years) in rhythm sequencing (discrimination and reproduction) vs. synchronization tasks, as well as in global cognition and auditory working memory tests. Although rhythm sequencing correlated with synchronization, the underlying cognitive functions dissociated: rhythmic sequencing correlated with auditory working memory, while synchronization did not. Our results suggest that working memory demands may subtend the dissociation between rhythmic skills that becomes visible in adulthood.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Sensitivity to rhythm is an important aspect of human development. However, despite growing research on developmental aspects of rhythm, the potential impact of gestational age on rhythm processing remains unexplored. We compared preterm and term children on rhythm perception in music under three conditions of stimulus complexity: rhythmical sequences in unpitched timbres (unpitched), in fixed pitch tones (constant pitch), or in tones of variable pitch (variable pitch contour). Twenty-one preterm children (9.89 ± 2.30 years; 10 girls) were individually matched in age and sex to term children (9.89 ± 2.34; 10 girls) and asked to judge whether the rhythm of a pair of sequences sounded same or different. In the unpitched condition, there were no between-group differences. However, term children performed significantly better than preterm children in the sequences with variable pitch contour (results on fixed pitch were intermediate). These results suggest that prematurity may impact on rhythm processing under more demanding conditions of stimulus complexity.

Behavioral and brain rhythms in the millisecond-to-second range are central in human music, speech, and movement. A comparative approach can further our understanding of the evolution of rhythm processing by identifying behavioral and neural similarities and differences across cognitive domains and across animal species. We provide an overview of research into rhythm cognition in music, speech, and animal communication. Rhythm has received considerable attention within each individual field, but to date, little integration. This review article on rhythm processing incorporates and extends existing ideas on temporal processing in speech and music and offers suggestions about the neural, biological, and evolutionary bases of human abilities in these domains.

The ability to perceive repetition and change in rhythm is fundamental to music understanding. How is this ability affected by other musical dimensions, such as pitch? We compared the perception of rhythmic repetition and change in rhythm-only stimuli versus rhythm-and-pitch stimuli. A sample of 357 participants, aged from 6 to 22 years, performed Same (repetition) versus Different (change) judgments on rhythmic stimuli with and without concurrent pitch variation. Rhythm-and-pitch stimuli impaired the perception of rhythmic repetition but not the perception of change, and this was independent from participants’ age. Our findings are consistent with two concurrent effects of pitch on rhythmic perception: a change-highlighting effect, acting only in rhythmic change, and a working-memory-overload effect that acts in both repetition and change. We discuss the implications regarding composer–listener communication across development.

The musical motives of a song emerge from the temporal arrangement of discrete tones. These tones normally have few durational values, and are organized in structured groups to create metrical patterns. In the present study we show that the ability to detect the rhythmic structure of a song, while ignoring surface changes, is also present in other species. We familiarized rats (Rattus norvegicus) with an excerpt of the Happy Birthday song. During test, we presented the animals with (i) the same excerpt of the familiarization, (ii) a constant-pitch version of the excerpt that reduced melodic intervals to only one tone (i.e., isotonic) but preserved rhythmic structure, and (iii) a rhythmically scrambled version of the excerpt that preserved the melodic intervals. The animals discriminated the rhythmically scrambled version from the versions that preserved the original rhythm. This demonstrates that rats were sensitive to at least some parts of the rhythmic structure of the tune. Together with previous findings, the present set of results suggests that the emergence of rhythmic musical universals might be based on principles shared with other species.

Despite abundant evidence that music skills relate to enhanced reading performance, the mechanisms subtending this relation are still under discussion. The Temporal Sampling Framework (TSF) provides a well-defined explanation for the music-reading link: musical rhythm perception would relate to reading because it helps to encode speech units, which, in turn, is fundamental to reading. However, in spite of this clear mediation-based prediction (effect of music skills mediated by the encoding of speech units), the tests made to it so far remain inconclusive, either due to the use of hybrid measures (rhythm perception and production, musical and non-musical rhythm) or to underspecified mediation results (unclear presence of partial mediation). In the present study, we addressed these potential weaknesses of previous studies and investigated whether phonological memory and phonological awareness (proxies of speech encoding abilities) mediate the effects of rhythm perception abilities on reading in late first-graders. To test for the specificity of musical rhythm in this relation, we examined the same hypothesis for melody perception. Results showed full mediation for effects of musical rhythm perception, while melody perception did not even relate to reading. Our findings support the predictions embedded in the TSF and highlight the potential of rhythm-based interventions in early stimulation.

Recent evidence suggests that temporal expectation is beneficial to memory formation. Rhythmic presentation of stimuli during encoding enhances subsequent recognition and is associated with distinct neural activity compared with when stimuli are presented in an arrhythmic manner. However, no prior study has examined how temporal expectation interacts with another important form of facilitation—spatial attention—to affect memory. This study systematically manipulated temporal expectation and spatial attention during encoding to examine their combined effect on behavioral recognition and associated ERPs. Participants performed eight experimental blocks consisting of an encoding phase and recognition test, with EEG recorded throughout. During encoding, pairs of objects and checkerboards were presented and participants were cued to attend to the left or right stream and detect targets as quickly as possible. In four blocks, stimulus presentation followed a rhythmic (constant, predictable) temporal structure, and in the other four blocks, stimulus onset was arrhythmic (random, unpredictable). An interaction between temporal expectation and spatial attention emerged, with greater recognition in the rhythmic than the arrhythmic condition for spatially attended items. Analysis of memory-specific ERP components uncovered effects of spatial attention. There were late positive component and FN400 old/new effects in the attended condition for both rhythmic and arrhythmic items, whereas in the unattended condition, there was an FN400 old/new effect and no late positive component effect. The study provides new evidence that memory improvement as a function of temporal expectation is dependent upon spatial attention.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Previous research has demonstrated that rhythmic presentation of stimuli during encoding boosts subsequent recognition and is associated with distinct neural activity compared with when stimuli are presented in an arrhythmic manner. However, it is unclear whether the effect is driven by automatic entrainment to rhythm or non-rhythmic temporal prediction. This registered report presents an EEG study aimed at establishing the cognitive and neural mechanisms of the effect of temporal prediction on recognition. In a blocked design, stimulus onset during encoding was systematically manipulated in four conditions prior to recognition testing: rhythmic fixed (RF), rhythmic variable (RV), arrhythmic fixed (AF), and arrhythmic variable (AV). By orthogonally varying rhythm and temporal position we were able to assess their independent contributions to recognition enhancement. Our behavioural results did not replicate previous findings that show a difference in recognition memory based on temporal predictability at encoding. However, ERP component analysis did show an early (N1) interaction effect of temporal position and rhythm, and later (N2 and Dm) effects driven by temporal position only. Taken together, we observed effects of temporal prediction at encoding, but these differences did not translate to later effects of memory, suggesting that effects of temporal prediction on recognition are less robust than previously thought.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.

Rhythm and motor function are intrinsically linked to each other and to music, but the rhythm-motor interplay during music training, and the corresponding brain mechanisms, are underexplored. In a longitudinal training study with children, we examined the role of rhythm predisposition in the fine motor improvements arising from music training, and which brain regions would be implicated. Fifty-seven 8-year-olds were assigned to either a 6-month music training (n = 21), sports training (n = 18), or a control group (n = 18). They performed rhythm and motor tasks, and structural brain scans before and after training were collected. Better ability to perceive rhythm before training was related to less gray matter volume in regions of the cerebellum, fusiform gyrus, supramarginal gyrus, ventral diencephalon, amygdala, and inferior/middle temporal gyri. Music training improved motor performance, and greater improvements correlated with better pre-training rhythm discrimination. Music training also induced a loss of gray matter volume in the left cerebellum and fusiform gyrus, and volume loss correlated with higher motor gains. No such effects were found in the sports and control groups. In summary, children with finer-tuned rhythm perception abilities were prone to finer motor improvements through music training, and this rhythm-motor link was to some extent subserved by the left cerebellum and fusiform gyrus. These findings have implications for models on music-related plasticity and rhythm cognition, and for programs targeting motor function.
