Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Previous studies have revealed semantic memory impairments in patients with schizophrenia, and suggested that certain of these impairments were related to thought disorganization. One explanation offered for this is a broadening of the boundaries of semantic categories in schizophrenia. We selected 16 semantic categories, and required a sample of 41 schizophrenia patients and 43 healthy control subjects to produce one exemplar from each category. The typicality of the subjects’ responses was rated. The exemplars produced by the patients were on average less typical than those produced by the healthy controls. No significant association between typicality of the response and thought disorganization was revealed in the patient sample. Affective flattening, alogia, and anhedonia were significantly and inversely associated with the typicality score, that is, higher ratings of these symptoms were associated with more typical responses. Our results suggest that a broadening of semantic category boundaries is observed in patients with schizophrenia, but is unrelated to thought disorganization. This semantic abnormality is not a feature of the patients with high ratings of certain negative symptoms.

Previous work has suggested that decrement in both processing speed and working memory span plays a role in the memory impairment observed in patients with schizophrenia. We undertook a study to examine simultaneously the effect of these two factors. A sample of 49 patients with schizophrenia and 43 healthy controls underwent a battery of verbal and visual memory tasks. Superficial and deep encoding memory measures were tallied. We conducted regression analyses on the various memory measures, using processing speed and working memory span as independent variables. In the patient group, processing speed was a significant predictor of superficial and deep memory measures in verbal and visual memory. Working memory span was an additional significant predictor of the deep memory measures only. Regression analyses involving all participants revealed that the effect of diagnosis on all the deep encoding memory measures was reduced to non-significance when processing speed was entered in the regression. Decreased processing speed is involved in verbal and visual memory deficit in patients, whether the task require superficial or deep encoding. Working memory is involved only insofar as the task requires a certain amount of effort.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
We developed several neural network models based on dendritic computation. Dendrites as independent computational units enable simulation of a wide variety of perceptual and cognitive phenomena. Computer simulations showed that new neural networks with dendrites are able to explain how neural activity is modulated by attention in primary visual cortex and in extra-striate cortex. Also it was shown how visual search is performed among moving targets and for targets that change locations due to the eye movements. The model of the interaction between dorsal and ventral visual streams enabled simulation of classical Gestalt principles of figure-ground organization (size, contrast, and convexity) along with newly discovered principles such as lower region and top-bottom polarity. The same model of figure-ground organization produced brain activation consistent with brain imaging studies and with electrophysiological recordings in the monkey brain. The model of temporal grouping is able to explain how we segregate figures from background based on temporal changes alone. This model does not require neural synchronization in order to sense temporal patterns. Furthermore, we developed a neural model of semantic memory which is able to simulate recent experimental findings about interaction between language understanding and perception and action. We performed several cognitive experiments which showed that perceptual and motor variables facilitate semantic processing in agreement with the model. Our project provided computational evidence for the importance of dendrites for information processing in the nervous system and for understanding visual perception and cognition.

OBJECTIVE:
Objective of the proposed project is to develop and test new neural networks for visual perception and cognition, which includes dendrites as independent computational units. It is expected that the neural model with dendrites will exhibit greater capacity for information processing and its output will show greater similarity with human behavior and experience compared to previous models.
METHOD:
We used computer simulations in order to test the properties of the proposed models. Results of computer simulations are compared with the results obtained in previous brain imaging and behavioral research on humans and/or neurophysiological studies on primates. Also, we tested several predictions derived from the models using cognitive experiments on humans where we measured the speed and accuracy of responses to simple perceptual and cognitive tasks.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS:
Computer simulations showed that new neural networks with dendrites are able to explain how attention influences neural activity in the visual cortex, how visual search is performed, how cortical activity gives rise to figure-ground organization and perception of temporal structure. Furthermore, we developed a neural model of semantic memory which is able to simulate recent experimental findings about interaction between language understanding and perception and action. We performed several cognitive experiments which showed that perceptual and motor variables facilitate semantic processing in agreement with the model. Our project provided computational evidence for the importance of dendrites for information processing in the nervous system and for understanding visual perception and cognition.

Concept typicality demonstrates the graded nature of category membership. At the most general (domain) level, however, typicality has not been studied. The domain level plays a critical role in theoretical accounts of the neurological implementation of semantic categories, with studies being divided along the correct domain classification: living/nonliving vs. animate/inanimate. We collected typicality ratings to further understand: (1) the relation between categorization at the domain and superordinate levels and (2) the internal organization of the domain level. Ten superordinate categories across 280 items were studied. The domain level was distinguished from the superordinate level along multiple dimensions, including typicality being unrelated to feature sharedness, but related to prevalence of feature types. The animate/inanimate distinction was supported by a simpler feature type analysis and a more reliable superordinate categorization. We argue that domain categorization relies on processes that are largely independent from those at the more specific, superordinate, level and occurs along the animacy dimension.

BACKGROUND
While a dog is a good example of a mammal, a bat is less so. Concept typicality, i.e., the degree to which a concept belongs to a category, has for long been known as critical to structuring conceptual knowledge. Recently, it has also been recognized as important in episodic memory, although the way this semantic dimension shapes episodic retrieval is still unclear.
AIM OF THE STUDY
We explored the interaction between semantic and episodic memory, in particular how concept typicality, a key dimension in semantic organization, modulates the neurocognitive bases of episodic retrieval.
METHOD
A behavioural and an fMRI study with healthy young adults explored concept typicality effects on both semantic and episodic decisions. In a semantic task, participants saw a category (e.g., mammal) followed by typical (e.g., dog) or atypical (e.g., bat) item and decided if the item belonged to the category. In a subsequent memory retrieval task, previously seen items and new ones were shown and participants indicated if the item was old or new.
RESULTS
Participants were faster and more accurate to categorize typical than atypical items. Interestingly, the memory retrieval task revealed the opposite effect with better retrieval of atypical items. At a neural level, retrieval of atypical items (relative to new ones) involved a large network including lateral temporal cortices bilaterally, left lateral and medial prefrontal, and bilateral angular gyrus. Conversely, retrieval of typical items only showed posterior cingulate and superior parietal activation.
CONCLUSION
During retrieval of atypical items, the lateral temporal cortex, critical in the storage of semantic features, interplays with lateral and medial prefrontal areas, involved in semantic elaboration and monitoring. Atypical items carry distinctive features (e.g., a bat is a flying mammal) that are more related to the memory decision. These distinctive events induce greater semantic elaboration, via fronto-temporal interactions, which promote episodic retrieval.

The medial temporal lobe supports both navigation and declarative memory. On this basis, a theory of phylogenetic continuity has been proposed according to which episodic and semantic memories have evolved from egocentric (e.g., path integration) and allocentric (e.g., map-based) navigation in the physical world, respectively. Here, we explored the behavioral significance of this neurophysiological model by investigating the relationship between the performance of healthy individuals on a path integration and an episodic memory task. We investigated the path integration performance through a proprioceptive Triangle Completion Task and assessed episodic memory through a picture recognition task. We evaluated the specificity of the association between performance in these two tasks by including in the study design a verbal semantic memory task. We also controlled for the effect of attention and working memory and tested the robustness of the results by including alternative versions of the path integration and semantic memory tasks. We found a significant positive correlation between the performance on the path integration the episodic, but not semantic, memory tasks. This pattern of correlation was not explained by general cognitive abilities and persisted also when considering a visual path integration task and a non-verbal semantic memory task. Importantly, a cross-validation analysis showed that participants' egocentric navigation abilities reliably predicted episodic memory performance. Altogether, our findings support the hypothesis of a phylogenetic continuity between egocentric navigation and episodic memory and pave the way for future research on the potential causal role of egocentric navigation on multiple forms of episodic memory.

Based on the neuro-functional association between navigation in the physical and the mental space at the level of the hippocampal-entorhinal system, Buzsáki and Moser (2013) have hypothesized a phylogenetic continuity between spatial navigation and declarative memory functions. According to this proposal, mechanisms of episodic and semantic memory would have evolved from mechanisms of self-based and map-based navigation in the physical space, respectively. Using classic versions of path integration and item recognition tasks in human subjects, we have recently described a correlation and a predictive relationship between abilities in egocentric navigation and episodic memory. Here we aim at confirming and extending this association to the dynamic component of sequential updating in the physical (egocentric navigation) and mental (episodic memory) space, and at investigating the relationship of these self-centered abilities with semantic memory. To this aim, we developed three new experimental tasks in which the dynamic component of updating information is particularly emphasized in the spatial, the temporal, and the semantic domain. The contribution of visual short-term memory to the three tasks was also controlled by including an additional task. The results confirmed the existence of a direct and predictive relationship between self-based spatial navigation and episodic memory. We also found a significant association between egocentric navigation and semantic memory, but this relationship was explained by short-term memory abilities and was mediated by episodic memory functions. Our results support the hypothesis of an evolutionary link between mechanisms that allow spatial navigation in the physical space and time travel in the mental space.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Recent experimental evidence has led to the idea that the neural mechanisms supporting spatial navigation have been flexibly adapted to organize concepts and memories through spatial codes. The “phylogenetic continuity hypothesis” (Buszáki & Moser, 2013) further proposes that the mechanisms supporting episodic and semantic memory would have respectively evolved from self-based (i.e. egocentric) and map-based (i.e. allocentric) spatial navigation mechanisms. Recent studies have observed traces of this phylogenetic continuity in human behavior, but the full original model has not yet been tested. Here, we evaluated the relationships between the four model components by using two sets of tasks in the spatial navigation and declarative memory domains based on complex materials and emphasizing the self vs. map-based processing (i.e. route vs. survey component for spatial navigation and episodic vs. semantic component for declarative memory). Consistent with the model predictions, the results of a multiple multivariate regression analysis revealed a specific across-domain relationship, such that route-based navigation performance specifically predicted episodic memory performance (self-based, egocentric components), while survey navigation performance specifically predicted the semantic memory one (map-based, allocentric components). The results of an additional regression analysis on the within-domain transformation process from self-based to map-based representations confirmed that route-based navigation specifically predicted survey navigation, while episodic memory specifically predicted semantic memory. Our results provide further behavioral evidence in support of the general hypothesis that the neural machinery evolved to map the physical world might have been recycled to organize memory and conceptual knowledge. Crucially, they also support the more specific hypothesis that the organizational principles involved in higher-level processing of information have inherited the fundamental distinction between different reference frames (egocentric vs. allocentric) for navigation in the physical world.

Understanding how we recognize objects requires unravelling the variables that govern the way we think about objects and the neural organization of object representations. A tenable hypothesis is that the organization of object knowledge follows key object-related dimensions. Here, we explored, behaviorally and neurally, the multidimensionality of object processing. We focused on within-domain object information as a proxy for the decisions we typically engage in our daily lives – e.g., identifying a hammer in the context of other tools. We extracted object-related dimensions from subjective human judgments on a set of manipulable objects. We show that the extracted dimensions are cognitively interpretable and relevant – i.e., participants are able to consistently label them, and these dimensions can guide object categorization; and are important for the neural organization of knowledge – i.e., they predict neural signals elicited by manipulable objects. This shows that multidimensionality is a hallmark of the organization of manipulable object knowledge.

Recent works have proposed that spatial mechanisms in the hippocampal-entorhinal system might have originally developed to represent distances and positions in the physical space and successively evolved to represent experience and memory in the mental space (Bellmund et al. 2018; Bottini and Doeller 2020). Within this phylogenetic continuity hypothesis (Buzsáki and Moser 2013), mechanisms supporting episodic and semantic memory would have evolved from egocentric and allocentric spatial navigation mechanisms, respectively. Recent studies have described a specific relationship between human performance in egocentric navigation and episodic memory (Committeri et al. 2020; Fragueiro et al. 2021), representing the first behavioral support to this hypothesis. Here, we tested the causal relationship among egocentric navigation and both episodic and semantic components of declarative memory. We conducted two experiments on healthy young adults: in the first experiment, participants were submitted to a navigational training based on path integration, while in the second experiment, participants completed a control training based on visual-perceptual learning. Performance in a set of memory tasks assessing episodic, semantic and short-term memory was compared among the pre- vs. post-training sessions. The results indicated a significant improvement of the episodic memory but not of the semantic or the short-term memory performance following the navigational training. In addition, no modulations of performance across the three memory tasks were observed following the control perceptual training. Our findings provide brand-new evidence of a potential causal association between mechanisms of egocentric navigation and episodic memory, thereby further supporting the phylogenetic continuity hypothesis between navigation and memory mechanisms as well as offering new insights about possible clinical applications of navigational trainings for memory functions/dysfunctions.
