The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS
Studying the human brain response to shifts in perception provides an insight on the neuronal processes which underlie perceptual decision. Visual ambiguous stimuli are a powerful tool to investigate such processes, since perception varies over time despite the physically unchanging properties of stimuli.
A classic example of an ambiguous visual stimulus is when two moving gratings are superimposed to form a plaid. The perception of a moving plaid switches back and forth between two interpretations: it can be perceived as a single surface with coherent motion or as two surfaces sliding one over the other (incoherent motion). It has been suggested that this phenomenon arises from competition between opposing percepts, which might be influenced by mechanisms such as neuronal adaptation, inhibition, and memory. Current perceptual stability models consider bistable perception as a result of the interaction between these mechanisms, but the relative contribution of each one is still under debate.
METHODS
Here, using fMRI, EEG and behavioral approaches, we explore how each of these contributes to perceptual decision during bistable visual perception of moving plaids, taking into account the possible interaction between them. We hypothesized that the crucial role of adaptation in perceptual bistability arises from its influence on other mechanisms, such as perceptual persistence (a special form of short term visual memory) and inhibition.
Based on a set of three experiments, we first tested for distinct levels of adaptation during visual motion perceptual bistability. Then, we investigated how such adaptation competes with persistence to influence perceptual experience. Finally, we tested whether cross-inhibitory effects occur between bistable percepts of a moving plaid, elicited by adaptation.
RESULTS
We found that adaptation can contribute to regulating percept duration during visual bistability, with distinct weights, depending on the type of percept. Our results provide further evidence for continuous competition between adaptation and persistence, the first leading to negative and the second to positive hysteresis, with a relevant role for perceptual experience. Finally, we demonstrated, both at the behavioral and neuronal level, that inhibition across neural populations plays a key role in the disambiguation of moving plaids.
CONCLUSION
Taken together, our findings add to the understanding of how the visual system achieves perceptual decisions based on interactions between low and high-level neuronal mechanisms, one based on adaptation and the second on short-term visual memory (persistence).

What causes interference in short-term memory? We report the novel finding that immediate memory for visually-presented verbal items is sensitive to disruption from task-irrelevant vibrotactile stimuli. Specifically, short-term memory for a visual sequence is disrupted by a concurrently presented sequence of vibrations, but only when the vibrotactile sequence entails change (when the sequence “jumps” between the two hands). The impact on visual-verbal serial recall was similar in magnitude to that for auditory stimuli (Experiment 1). Performance of the missing item task, requiring recall of item-identity rather than item-order, was unaffected by changing-state vibrotactile stimuli (Experiment 2), as with changing-state auditory stimuli. Moreover, the predictability of the changing-state sequence did not modulate the magnitude of the effect, arguing against an attention-capture conceptualisation (Experiment 3). Results support the view that interference in short-term memory is produced by conflict between incompatible, amodal serial-ordering processes (interference-by-process) rather than interference between similar representational codes (interference-by-content).

In two experiments investigating hemispheric asymmetries in auditory distraction, the spatial location of to-be-ignored sound was manipulated. Prior studies indicated a left-ear disadvantage for changing-state sequences during short-term serial recall but lacked a direct measure of the changing-state effect. Experiment 1 compared changing-state with steady-state sequences in a visual-verbal serial recall task, confirming that left-ear disruption resulted from the acoustically varying nature of the sound, emphasizing right hemisphere dominance for processing acoustic variation in unattended stimuli. Experiment 2 replicated these findings and explored participants' metacognitive awareness of auditory distractors' disruptive potential. While participants were aware that changing-state sequences were more disruptive than steady-state sequences, they lacked awareness of the left-ear disadvantage. The study suggests individuals have metacognitive awareness of the disruptive impact of changing-state over steady-state sound but not of the accompanying left-ear disadvantage, raising implications for theoretical accounts of auditory distraction.

This study investigated serial recall performance in a complex acoustic scene that included spatialised background sounds and location changes within the target sequence to reflect real-life challenges. The focus is on two effects: the irrelevant sound effect (ISE) and the spatial-source alternation effect (SSAE). Both represent impairment in short-term memory performance of to-be-remembered items: the ISE due to irrelevant background sounds, and the SSAE due to location changes within the target sequence. Although distinct, these effects typically occur together in real-world settings, e.g., listening to multiple speakers in noise, but have not been investigated together yet. Building on the theoretical frameworks of these two effects, this study combines principles from both the irrelevant sound effect (ISE) and the spatial-source alternation effect (SSAE) as a step towards enhancing acoustic complexity in established cognitive tasks. Experiment 1 examined auditory-verbal serial recall using spatially alternating target digits presented at a typical rate (1 item/1 s), with either meaningful or meaningless background speech. Results showed an ISE, with meaningful speech causing greater disruption, but no SSAE - possibly due to either the presentation rate or the spatialised audio scene. To further clarify this, Experiment 2 was conducted with a faster presentation rate (1 item/350 ms) consistent with a previous study, and more spatial target locations (monotic, [Formula: see text]). An SSAE was revealed for all locations. These findings suggest that the SSAE may mainly be modulated by the presentation rate-given the spatial separation is audible and only emergent at rapid location changes-questioning its applicability to naturalistic listening scenarios. As an attempt to bridge the gap between controlled laboratory settings and more complex listening tasks, these findings help explain how cognitive systems manage competing demands in real-world auditory environments, such as separating speech streams in noise.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objective: To determine whether the perceptual intensity of speech signals-manipulated via loudness and dynamically adjusted through a brain state-dependent stimulation (BSDS) paradigm-modulates neural speech tracking and short-term memory.
Approach: We implemented an EEG brain state-dependent design in which real-time variations in alpha power were used to modulate the loudness of pre-recorded digits during a task modelled on the Digit Span test. Speech tracking was quantified using lagged Gaussian Copula Mutual Information (2-10 Hz), and behavioural performance was assessed through recall accuracy.
Main results: Contrary to our initial hypothesis that higher loudness would enhance speech tracking and memory via bottom-up attention, digit recall accuracy was stable across loudness conditions. Speech tracking revealed an unexpected pattern: louder stimuli presented during high alpha power (low attention) elicited reduced tracking magnitudes and shorter peak latencies, whereas quieter stimuli delivered during low alpha power (high attention) produced stronger and more temporally extended tracking responses.
Significance: These findings suggest that internal attentional state, rather than external stimulus salience, plays a dominant role in shaping speech encoding. The study provides proof-of-concept evidence for brain state-dependent stimulation in auditory paradigms and highlights the importance of attentional fluctuations in determining neural responses to speech, with implications for future speech-enhancement strategies.

One way to develop theories of forgetting in short-term memory is to introduce novel sources of distraction. A recent study reported a vibrotactile changing-state effect, suggesting that a sequence of irrelevant vibrations can disrupt visual-verbal serial recall if it contains variation. The present study aimed to replicate and extend this finding. But Experiment 1 found no evidence of a vibrotactile changing-state effect in visual-verbal serial recall. The effect was also absent in a direct replication of the original report (Experiment 4) and with a visual-spatial serial recall task (Experiment 2). Experiment 3 implemented further variation in vibrotactile properties, varying the timing, strength and spatial location of vibrations, yet produced no disruption. A Bayesian random-effects meta-analysis across all available experiments further supported the null hypothesis. These results suggest that the previously reported effect may reflect a false positive, and contribute to theory refinement by identifying potential boundary conditions for vibrotactile distraction.
