    • The Boolean operator AND between the terms is assumed by default. If you enter the words European Union in the search box, the system returns all records in which both words occur, regardless of their order.
    • When entering a set of words in quotes, e.g "european union", all records containing the literal term "European Union" will be retrieved.
  • Search by access fields (e.g. author, title, etc.):
    • To direct your search, choose the field in which you want to search the word or expression.
    • Search in the field assumes by default the expression in quotes, e.g. European union will retrieve all records containing the literal term "European Union"
  • To perform more complex searches, additional words or expressions may be added.
  • If you want to refine the search results, you can always access the link "search" in the upper left corner of the page of search results.
  • The search engine is not case sensitive. For example, the word congress has the same meaning that Congress or CONGRESS.
  • To truncate your search expression, use the $ character

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The interference of a secondary visual emotional task on the P3 component elicited by an auditory odd-ball paradigm was studied in recidivist inmates and controls. The main ERP study was preceded by a SDT based paradigm in order to assess the sensitivity of both groups for emotional arousal and valence.
For this phase, controls reported lower values, were less liberal and obtained higher sensitivity scores for emotional arousal, whereas no differences were found for valence except for criteria where groups did not differ for lower cut-points but did so for higher response categories (from 5-6 on). These results suggested that to obtain the same pattern of emotional responses for both groups, different stimuli ought to be used. Based on this, the visual stimuli for the ERP paradigm were selected so that both groups would be paired concerning their sensitivity values.
The ERP results showed that controls presented higher amplitudes for P3 under the Pure (absence of visual stimulation) condition than for Positive, Neutral or Negative conditions. There were no effects for the recidivist criminals. P3 peak latency was significantly earlier for the Pure condition.
Thus, for the control group, we obtained a reduction of auditory P3 peak amplitude when subjects were stimulated by pictures, regardless of its valence, suggesting a shift of attentional resources to such stimuli. This was not found for inmates.
This suggests that, besides a basic impairment on the detection and discrimination of emotional information, antisocials may further be affected by anomalous neurocognitive processing, translated by deficits in the efficient allocation of processing resources on peripheral tasks, even if they contain emotional significance.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Classic studies regarding emotional processing, either in normal subjects or in pathological groups, rely on the basic assumption of a linear correspondence between stimuli input and perceived emotional information. This neglects the evidence that different experimental groups may perceive the same stimuli features differently. Thus, when emotional input is to act as an independent variable, it becomes fundamental to assure equivalent emotional loading in all groups under comparison, even if using different stimuli. This is not a commonly used procedure when studying emotion or its influence on other cognitive processes. In order to address this issue, a signal detection theory based methodology is presented, which permits measuring sensitivity indices for emotional stimuli, while controlling participants’ subjective criteria. This proposal may represent a useful methodological approach for the study of several emotion-related problems and albeit applicable to any group of subjects.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES:
This research project aimed to test several hypotheses including that recidivist offenders show lower sensitivity to the intensity of emotional stimuli than controls, and that emotional stimuli that elicit identical arousal in both groups produce higher interference on the neurocognitive processing of control subjects.
METHODS:
To test the aforementioned hypotheses, we put forward an experiment based on the Signal Detection Theory, in which 120 slides from the International Affective Picture System were exhibited to 38 male recidivist offenders and 30 non-criminal controls. Subjects were asked to rate each slide in a 9 point scale for the perceived arousal. Based on the above experiment, a subset of slides of identical emotional arousal was presented to 20 subjects from each group, with simultaneous ERP recordings by means of an auditory odd-ball paradigm.
RESULTS:
Receiver Operating Characteristic curves from the first experiment show that mean Az values for recidivist
offenders are lower than for controls considering different categories of emotional arousal (F(1,64) = 9.84, p < .01). Results from the second experiment show that when both groups are under emotional stimulation of equivalent arousal, the controls evidence a higher reduction of P300 amplitude (F(1, 17) = 8.857, p = .008) than offenders (ns).
CONCLUSIONS:
In this study we verified that recidivist offenders are less sensitive than controls for different categories of emotional intensity, requiring stimuli of increased intensity to perceive the same arousal as controls. Furthermore, even if groups are submitted to stimulation of matched arousal, the interference of such emotional stimuli on neurocognitive processes seems to be higher in controls. However, further analysis will be required to measure the single effects of the emotional stimulation, independently of mental resources involved on sensorial processing.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND:
Study of emotional responses of antisocial individuals has produced inconsistent findings. Some studies report emotional deficits, while others find no differences between people with and without antisocial behaviours.
AIMS:
Our aim was to apply signal detection theory methods to compare the sensitivity of antisocial and control participants to emotional stimuli. We hypothesised that offenders would show lower ability to discriminate changes in the level of arousal and valence of emotional stimuli relative to the controls.
METHODS:
Signal detection theory was applied to study the sensitivity of recidivist offenders in prison to emotional arousal and valence induced by pictures. This approach, novel in this context, provides a departure from the usual reliance on self-report.
RESULTS:
Offenders reported higher arousal than controls but showed lower sensitivity to changes between different levels of arousal (whereas no differences were found for valence). Also, offenders showed increased response bias for changes in the levels of arousal, as well as in the higher levels of valence.
CONCLUSIONS:
Our findings show that direct observations of emotional arousal, but not valence, discriminate between recidivist offenders with antisocial personality disorder and non-offending controls. Use of such approaches is likely to provide more valid data than self-reports and may prove particularly useful in studies of intervention for recidivists or in assessment of their readiness for release.

Visuo-vestibular conflicts within the roll plane modulate multisensory verticality perception

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The integration of visuo-vestibular information is crucial when interacting with the external environment. Under normal circumstances, vision and vestibular signals provide corroborating information, for example regarding the direction and speed of self-motion. However, conflicts in visuo-vestibular signalling, such as optic flow presented to a stationary observer, can change subsequent processing in either modality. While previous studies have demonstrated the impact of sensory conflict on unisensory visual or vestibular percepts, here we investigated whether visuo-vestibular conflicts impact sensitivity to multisensory percepts, specifically verticality. Participants were exposed to a visuo-vestibular conflicting or non-conflicting motion adaptor before completing a Vertical Detection Task. Sensitivity to vertical stimuli was reduced following visuo-vestibular conflict. No significant differences in criterion were found. Our findings suggest that visuo-vestibular conflicts not only modulate processing in unimodal channels, but also broader multisensory percepts, which may have implications for higher-level processing dependent on the integration of visual and vestibular signals.

Prior information shapes perceptual confidence

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Decisional confidence refers to the subjective evaluation of the accuracy of a decision based on sensory information. While these judgments are typically grounded in the strength of evidence leading to a decision, they are also subjected to influence from top-down factors such as prior expectations. Previous research has highlighted the impact of prior information on decision parameters such as reaction times and decision criteria placement. However, a comprehensive understanding of how prior information shapes confidence ratings is still lacking. In this study, we manipulate prior knowledge by inducing varying levels of target probability expectation (low: 33%, random: 50%, high: 67%) in a perceptual detection task. In each trial both type-1 (detection) and type-2 (confidence) responses were recorded. First, we replicate previous findings, demonstrating that decisional priors impact decision criteria but not task sensitivity. Secondly, we reveal the strong effect that prior expectations exert on type-2 decisions, with this influence being moderated by a congruency effect between the given prior, the actual stimulus presented, and the provided response. Moreover, we find that confidence is higher in correct compared to incorrect responses, with low-probability trials leading to higher confidence judgments in correct choices compared to random and liberal trials. Finally, we unveil that prior-dependent modulation rates in criterion and confidence were positively associated. These results underscore the intricate interplay between prior expectations, decision-making, and confidence levels, demonstrating that what we perceive is not solely a data-driven phenomenon but can be already shaped by the available information about the state of the world.

The relationship between individual alpha frequency and time perception: Testing the internal clock versus the sampling rate hypothesis
Publication year: 2025

https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cortex.2025.09.008
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Perceiving the duration of events is a fundamental ability for everyday life. Traditional research has focused on the role of alpha oscillations as an endogenous pacemaker for the human internal clock, yet there is limited evidence supporting this idea. An alternative hypothesis proposes that alpha oscillations may underlie a sampling mechanism, where higher alpha frequencies correspond to increased information sampling, resulting in more accurate temporal judgments. In this study, we tested the internal clock versus sampling rate hypothesis by examining the relationship between Individual Alpha Frequency (IAF) and fine-grained time perception. Using resting Electroencephalography (EEG) and Signal Detection Theory (SDT), fifty healthy volunteers performed a time-discrimination task with 100 and 500 ms standard durations. Our results demonstrate that temporal sensitivity (d’) but not temporal bias (c) is influenced by IAF, with higher IAF leading to more accurate time estimates (higher d’). The correlations were observed over frontocentral topographies consistent with previous reports of neural networks involved in time processing and were most pronounced at 100 ms relative to 500 ms, likely due to fluctuations in IAF across multiple cycles. In conclusion, our findings support the relationship between IAF and temporal sensitivity. These results challenge the pacemaker hypothesis and instead suggest a distributed mechanism where alpha oscillations enhance the precision of temporal sampling. Our study adds to the growing body of evidence highlighting the role of IAF in sensory sampling as a generative mechanism for temporal sensitivity as opposed to subjective time perception.
