Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A model for certain instances of dyadic extrasensory perception (ESP) is proposed wherein a 'psi stimulus' is generated by a sender in response to real-time feedback of target-relevant receiver mentation. This stimulus need act only to reinforce current mentation by momentarily changing physiological arousal, reducing the need for complex information transfer and highlighting the idea that psi may be a blanket term for a variety of information channels utilising different mechanisms rather than a unitary phenomenon. Experimental evaluation of the model involved two extensions to the standard Ganzfeld design: (1) in one condition the sender received false feedback of receiver mentation; (2) receiver skin-conductance was recorded during mentation. No evidence of ESP was found based on target-rank (pi = 0.49) but the predicted skinconductance response to target relevant mentation was observed, with significantly higher arousal for relevant mentation than in baseline periods (p=0.04, 1-t). Arousal was increased in both conditions,
indicating a response to the sender's perception rather than directly to target relevant mentation. The True Feedback condition showed a surprising negative correlation with magnetic variance (p=0.06 but opposite to prediction), and only the False Feedback condition showed the predicted negative correlation with magnetic field intensity (p=0.002, 1-t).

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The objective of this study is to determine (a) if decision making ability is impaired in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and in people with good recovery from AN and (b) whether any impairment in decision making is associated with alterations in skin conductance responses (SCR). Patients with AN (n = 29), healthy controls comparable in age and IQ (HC, n = 29), and women long term recovered from AN (n = 14), completed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) while their SCR were measured. AN patients performed poorly in the IGT compared to the HC and to the recovered AN participants. AN patients had decreased anticipatory SCR prior to choosing cards and reduced SCR after losses compared to HC. IGT performance and the SCR of recovered AN participants did not differ from the HC. Decision making ability is impaired in AN. It is associated with a significantly attenuated SCR. Neither of these features are found in recovered AN. The association between impaired decision making ability and a decreased autonomic response is consistent with the predictions of the Somatic Marker Hypothesis.

OBJECTIVES:
The primary aim of this study was to conduct a replication, simplification, and extension of similar previous studies that claimed anomalous anticipatory skin conductance responses prior to various stimuli and to provide sufficient protocol and analysis details in order to foster additional replications. A secondary aim was to provide a testable model in order to understand the observed results.
DESIGN:
We used standard skin conductance measures and techniques to search within 50 participants for responses prior to 1-second duration, 97-dB acoustic stimuli, compared to prior to silent controls. We used an interstimulus interval randomly and uniformly distributed between 30 and 50 seconds.
OUTCOME MEASURES:
The dependent variable was the difference between proportions of 3.5-second prestimulus intervals prior to acoustic stimuli and prior to silent controls that contained a fully formed, nonspecific skin conductance response (ns-SCR). The null hypothesis was that the proportion difference should be zero.
RESULTS:
We found a significant proportion difference of 0.032 (Z = 2.08; effect size = 0.077 +/- 0.037; p(1t) = 0.0018), which is a replication of earlier similar studies.
CONCLUSIONS:
We examined and ruled out a number of potential artifacts that might have accounted for this finding. To understand these results, we demonstrated, by Monte Carlo techniques, that a possible explanation is that experimenters may have used their own intuition to initiate experiment runs to somehow sort otherwise random nonspecific skin conductance responses into appropriate bins in order to mimic physiological responses. We found experimental evidence to support this idea as an operational mechanism. If this speculation is confirmed in prospective studies, then this intuition-based mimicking of effects may profoundly impact the interpretation of results from complementary and alternative medical studies that use statistical inference to assess outcomes.

Anticipatory skin conductance responses: A possible example of decision augmentation theory

ABSTRACT:
Two recent skin conductance response studies have provided significant evidence of an effect. In both studies, the dependent variable was a proportion difference between prestimulus intervals prior to acoustic stimuli and prior to controls that contained a fully-formed non-specific skin conductance response (ns-SCR). The null hypothesis was that the proportion difference should be zero. Both studies showed significant non-zero proportion differences. These studies have been examined with regard to two competing hypotheses for a possible mechanism. A physiological hypothesis suggests that individuals respond in advance to randomly determined future startle stimuli. A second hypothesis suggests that the participants are simply a source of random ns-SCR?s that are not due to any overt stimuli and that the observed effects arises because of the experimenters? psi. That is, Decision Augmentation Theory (DAT) holds, in this context, that the experimenters bias their decisions to initiate an experimental run such that the proportion difference will be large and thus mimic a physiological response. Circumstantial evidence against a physiology hypothesis include: the rare anticipatory response to either an acoustic stimulus or a control is independent of stimulus position; previously certified laboratory psi participants did not perform better then unselected participants; and participants who show no or very few ns-SCR?s (i.e., zombies) do not show anticipatory effects at all. Quantitative analyses do favor a DAT hypothesis. DAT predicts and the data significantly confirm that the ns-SCR rate prior to formal controls will be less than that measured far from any stimuli (i.e., background rate). Additionally, DAT predicts and the data confirm a square root dependency of Z-score versus lability (i.e., the probability of a ns-SCR in a 3.5-second period). The circumstantial arguments taken together with two different types of quantitative results provide the best possible evidence in support of a DAT mechanism that can be obtained retrospectively. A prospective study, however, is needed settle the issue, formally.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In two experiments, we examined affective responses and attentional bias toward threat. We compared three dimensions of affective responses (subjective, expressive, physiological) to negative and neutral stimuli in high and low anxious participants and examined whether these responses correlated with attentional interference in an emotional Stroop task. We used an evaluative conditioning procedure to manipulate the affective value of stimuli subsequently used in a Stroop task. We measured facial EMG (Experiment 1), skin conductance (Experiment 2), and subjective evaluations (both experiments). High anxious participants displayed Stroop interference from negatively conditioned stimuli. Both high and low anxious participants showed increased facial expressions and physiological arousal to negatively conditioned stimuli during the Stroop task. Findings suggest that differences between high and low anxious participants are more important in the cognitive processing of threat than affective reactions to threat.

A subcortical pathway was proposed for rapid threat detection. We investigated whether perception of neutral, happy and angry facial expressions are reflected in the skin conductance response (SCR) at different stimulus durations (12, 24, 35, 170, 2000 msec) and reported awareness levels (unawareness, face detection, emotion discrimination). Additionally, participants (N=17) reported subjective arousal. The SCR magnitude measure showed no differences across emotion type or awareness level. Importantly, it changed across duration, with an emotional (anger + happiness) vs. neutral contrast emerging only at 2000 msec. Conversely, differences in subjective arousal appeared as soon as participants reported emotion discrimination, independent of duration. We suggest the SCR is not a specific marker of unaware threat detection but is dependent on conscious processing.

It has been shown that faces displaying threat signals can be processed without awareness. This supports the existence of a subcortical pathway for rapid but coarse threat detection including the amygdala.
Here we study whether subliminal perception of faces showing neutral, happiness and anger expressions can elicit changes in the skin conductance response (SCR). Crucially, faces were presented at one of 5 durations (12, 24, 35, 170 and 2000 msec) to account for inter-subject variability in awareness thresholds, being immediately preceded and followed by two scrambled masks (forward + backward masking). In the end of each trial, participants (N=17) had to report the degree of awareness (unawareness of any content - faces and emotional features; face detection, or emotion discrimination), and to make arousal ratings (0 to 5) and valence categorizations (positive, negative or neutral).
The SCR magnitude measure showed no clear differences across emotion type or awareness level. A significant effect emerged only when contrasting emotion (anger + happiness) vs. neutral categories, but only when subjects reported emotion discrimination. No such effect was evident in the lower awareness levels. Importantly, the SCR differed across duration, with the emotion vs. neutral contrast showing significant differences only for the highest (2000 msec) duration. No significant differences were found for any of the shorter durations, not even when awareness was clearly reported (e. g. 165 msec). Conversely, differences in subjective arousal emerged as soon as subjects reported emotion discrimination, independent of duration (e. g. 24 msec).
Our data shows that duration explains modulations of the SCR better than awareness levels. This suggests that the SCR is not a specific measure for threat detection under unaware conditions but that it is dependent on conscious processing and higher cognitive functions.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Background - Patients with eating disorders favor immediate gratification and ignore long-term negative consequences. This study investigated decision making in bulimia nervosa using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and skin conductance responses (SCR).
Method - A total of 26 bulimia nervosa patients and 51 healthy controls took part in this study; 29 patients with anorexia nervosa were included for comparison.
Results - Bulimia nervosa patients performed poorly in the IGT, but showed no decrease in anticipatory SCR, whereas a markedly diminished anticipatory SCR was seen in the anorexia nervosa group.
Conclusions - This finding does not support the somatic marker hypothesis. Impaired decision making was associated with obsessive-compulsive traits.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
We present the first study to examine indicators of autonomic arousal associated with shifts in body image and as a function of predisposition to report spontaneous anomalous bodily experiences (ABEs) from nonclinical samples. Participants completed the Temporal-Lobe Experience subscale of the Cardiff Anomalous Perception scale-a measure associated with anomalous experiences resulting from temporal lobe dysfunction (Bell, Halligan, & Ellis, 2006) followed by a rubber-hand illusion experiment. We examined: (a) the time taken to induce the illusion, (b) effects on the tonic skin conductance level, and (c) phasic skin conductance responses in the form of nonspecific skin conductance responses (NS-SCRs) in the period leading up to the declaration of the illusion. The illusion took significantly longer to induce in those reporting high levels of ABEs, relative to those reporting low levels of such experiences. A significant increase in the tonic skin conductance level and the frequency of NS-SCRs occurred in the period leading directly up to the declaration of the illusion. Both measures were significantly increased for those reporting higher-levels of ABEs. The data question generic notions of "weak" body representations subserving increasing malleability in body image. Instead, they lend general support for a "dysconnection" account of anomalous bodily experiences-at least for some nonclinical hallucinators. Theoretical considerations are discussed.
