Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Eighty-five Portuguese children, aged 12 to 30 months, placed in residential institutions were assessed to investigate the influence of variations in the institutionalization experience of social withdrawal behavior, after taking into account potentially confounding individual characteristics and pre-admission experiences. In light of the limited attention in institutionalization research on social withdrawal, the determinants of the identified predictors of withdrawal symptoms also were examined. Current quality of care experienced in the institution, operationalized in terms of the absence (vs. presence) of a preferred attachment relationship, predicted social withdrawal, such that absence of such a relationship forecasted greater withdrawal. Moreover, existence of a preferred attachment relationship was itself predicted by better child socioemotional functioning, greater caregiver sensitive-responsiveness, and better quality of individualized care provided by the staff.

OBJECTIVE:
This study aims (1) to assess the social withdrawal behavior of institutionalized children; and (2) to examine the associations between the social withdrawal behavior and specific individual, relational and contextual variables.
METHOD:
Using a longitudinal design, 47 children and their caregivers were evaluated over the first nine months of institutionalization. At four different moments, an assessment protocol was administered to the children that included the Alarm Distress Baby Scale (ADBB, Guedeney & Fermanian, 2001) and the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID-III, Bayley, 2006). Caregivers completed the Infant Characteristics Questionnaire (Bates, Freeland, & Lounsbury, 1979) at 3, 6 and 9 months of institutionalization. The sensitivity and cooperation of the caregivers were also evaluated in four times through a structured interaction task (Baptista, Marques, Silva, Soares, & Lyons-Ruth, 2008).
RESULTS:
No differences were found in terms of children's social withdrawal throughout the period of institutionalization. Both the temperament of children as the level of mental development proved to be negatively associated with social withdrawal behavior. The age of admission had a significant impact on children’s social withdrawal behavior at six months of institutionalization. In contrast, caregivers’ sensitivity and cooperation had no effect on children's social withdrawal. It was also found that the prenatal care risk and the characteristics of the institutional context were related to children’s social withdrawal behavior.
CONCLUSIONS:
This study provides new data on the impact of the institutionalization in social withdrawal behavior of institutionalized children.

Institutionalization has had an impact on socio emotional development of children, contributing to how they interact with others. Despite the evidence, there are few studies that relate the development of social behavior of institutionalized children in a neurobiological framework. In this study we analyze the levels of oxytocin and cortisol of 17 infants, at the time of their admission to the institution, and the role of these hormones in the infants’ social withdrawal behavior and in caregivers’ responsiveness six months later. The results showed that infants with higher levels of cortisol, on admission, have less responsive caregivers and have a tendency to be more socially withdrawn, 6 months after. It was also found that infants with higher levels of oxytocin tend to be more socially withdrawn and have less responsive caregivers 6 months after admission The results suggest that prior hormone levels in infants, on admission, may be associated with their socio/emotional development and with the interaction quality with caregivers in the institution, 6 months after. In spite of the exploratory feature, this study reveals the importance of neurobiological factors at the admission to understand the developmental pathways in institutionalized infants.
