Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

When we talk we communicate our intentions. Although the origin of intentional action is debated in cognitive neuroscience, the question of how the brain generates the intention in speech remains still open. Using magnetoencephalography, we investigated the cortical dynamics engaged when healthy subjects attended to either their intention to speak or their actual speech. We found that activity in the right and left parietal cortex increased before subjects became aware of intending to speak. Within the time window of parietal activation, we also observed a transient left frontal activity in Broca's area, a crucial region for inner speech. During attention to speech, neural activity was detected in left prefrontal and temporal areas and in the temporoparietal junction. In agreement with previous results, our findings suggest that the parietal cortex plays a multimodal role in monitoring intentional mechanisms in both action and language. The coactivation of parietal regions and Broca's area may constitute the cortical circuit specific for controlling intentional processes during speech.

In order to disentangle the complexity of language, Chomsky and colleagues have recently proposed to distinguish the “faculty of language in the narrow sense” (recursion mechanism) and “in the broad sense”. Here we focus on this sense of language, taking it as the embodied expression of inner states, cognitive and affective. We will illustrate, using recent findings from others and our own, that common threads can be found across domains apparently diverse such as speech, music and possibly also voice.

Os gânglios da base têm um papel comum no processamento emocional de música e de fala? Para responder a esta questão, 24 doentes de Parkinson foram comparados com 25 controlos em tarefas de reconhecimento de emoções nos dois domínios. Na música, os doentes apresentam alterações no reconhecimento das emoções positivas (alegria e serenidade), mas não das negativas (tristeza e medo); este padrão não é explicado por défices perceptivos ou cognitivos genéricos. Na fala, apenas o reconhecimento da tristeza está alterado, e esta alteração está associada à disfunção executiva dos doentes. Os resultados indicam uma dissociação entre modalidades na doença de Parkinson. Propomos que os gânglios da base desempenham funções específicas ao domínio no processamento emocional de música e de fala.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.

Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been employed to manipulate brain activity and to establish cortical excitability by eliciting motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in speech processing research. We will discuss the history, methodological underpinnings, key contributions, and future directions for studying speech processing using TMS and by eliciting MEPs. Furthermore, we will discuss specific challenges that are encountered when examining speech processing using TMS or by measuring MEPs. We suggest that future research may benefit from using TMS in conjunction with neuroimaging methods such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging or electroencephalography, and from the development of new stimulation protocols addressing cortico-cortical inhibition/facilitation and interhemispheric connectivity during speech processing.

Humans tend to spontaneously and automatically imitate aspects of their conversation partner’s speech patterns. The ability to imitate others’ speech is essential for effective communication; it is required for learning to speak our native language, to be able to understand others in challenging listening conditions such as background noise, and to streamline social interaction between conversation partners. Yet, the ability to inhibit automatic vocal imitation is equally important, in order to avoid unwanted imitation of others’ speech. Being unable to suppress unwanted imitation, as may be the case in autism or following a stroke, can be severely debilitating in daily life. The project aimed to elucidate the neurophysiological substrates supporting automatic vocal imitation of speech. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) study 1 replicated results on inhibition of manual actions and extended these results to inhibition of vocal actions and Study 2 targeted the role of Inferior Frontal Gyrus in automatic imitation of speech. Two behavioural studies tested a measure for covert automatic imitation. This measure effectively shows to which extent speech motor patterns are activated while perceiving speech actions. The results showed that listeners show covert automatic imitation for vowel stimuli.

Observing auditory of visual speech is thought to activate an execution-observation system in humans. Observers thus covertly imitate observable speech. These covert imitation processes are hypothesized to reflect learned associations between observed actions and motor responses. The existence of these associations is demonstrated using the Stimulus Response Compatibility Task (SRC). The SRC interprets slower response times in producing a prompt when an incongruent distracter is presented as activation of the execution-observation system. SRC effects on response times have previously been demonstrated for one specific class of speech sounds, namely consonants, but it is not clear whether the SRC effect extends to vowels. It is also not clear how activation of the execution-observation system affects speech production in the presence of an incongruent distracter. Sixty-five participants performed an SRC task in three modalities: visual, auditory, and audiovisual in a between-group design, while their responses were audio-recorded. Results showed SRC effects extend to spoken vowels in all three modalities. Acoustic analysis of the participants’ responses revealed that covert imitation did not affect speech production in a vowel-specific manner, although vowel durations were generally shorter for incongruent distracters. Covert imitation processes therefore affect speech perception but not speech production.

Behavioral and brain rhythms in the millisecond-to-second range are central in human music, speech, and movement. A comparative approach can further our understanding of the evolution of rhythm processing by identifying behavioral and neural similarities and differences across cognitive domains and across animal species. We provide an overview of research into rhythm cognition in music, speech, and animal communication. Rhythm has received considerable attention within each individual field, but to date, little integration. This review article on rhythm processing incorporates and extends existing ideas on temporal processing in speech and music and offers suggestions about the neural, biological, and evolutionary bases of human abilities in these domains.

Therefore, it remains to be clarified whether self-voice prioritization is boosted by emotion, and whether self-relevance and emotion interact differently when attention is focused on who is speaking vs. what is being said.
Thirty participants listened to 210 prerecorded words spoken in one’s own or an unfamiliar voice and differing in emotional valence, in two tasks manipulating the attention focus on either speaker identity or speech emotion. Event-related potentials (ERP) of the electroencephalogram (EEG) informed on the temporal dynamics of self-relevance, emotion, and attention effects.
Words spoken in one’s own voice elicited a larger N1 and Late Positive Potential (LPP), but smaller N400 responses. Identity and emotion interactively modulated the P2 (self-positivity bias) and LPP (self-negativity bias). Attention to speaker identity modulated more strongly ERP responses within 600 ms post-word onset (N1, P2, N400), whereas attention to speech emotion altered late components (LPP). However, attention did not modulate the interaction of self-relevance and emotion.
These findings suggest that the self-voice is prioritized for neural processing at early sensory stages, and that both emotion and attention shape self-voice prioritization in speech processing. They also confirm involuntary processing of salient signals (self-relevance and emotion) even in situations where attention is deliberately directed away from those cues. These findings have important implications for a better understanding of symptoms thought to arise from aberrant self-voice monitoring such as auditory verbal hallucinations.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.

The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

AIM
Language disturbances are a candidate biomarker for the early detection of psychosis. Temporal and prosodic abnormalities have been observed in schizophrenia patients, while there is conflicting evidence whether such deficits are present in participants meeting clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR-P) criteria.
METHODS
Clinical interviews from CHR-P participants (n = 50) were examined for temporal and prosodic metrics and compared against a group of healthy controls (n = 17) and participants with affective disorders and substance abuse (n = 23).
RESULTS
There were no deficits in acoustic variables in the CHR-P group, while participants with affective disorders/substance abuse were characterized by slower speech rate, longer pauses and higher unvoiced frames percentage.
CONCLUSION
Our finding suggests that temporal and prosodic aspects of speech are not impaired in early-stage psychosis. Further studies are required to clarify whether such abnormalities are present in sub-groups of CHR-P participants with elevated psychosis-risk.
