Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The way people process stressors is critical in determining whether or not trauma will be experienced. Some clinical and neuroimaging findings suggest that posttraumatic stress disorder patients experience difficulty in synthesizing the traumatic experience in a comprehensive narrative. Religiousness and spirituality are strongly based on a personal quest for understanding of questions about life and meaning. Building narratives based on healthy perspectives may facilitate the integration of traumatic sensorial fragments in a new cognitive synthesis, thus working to decrease post-traumatic symptoms. Given the potential effects of spiritual and religious beliefs on coping with traumatic events, the study of the role of spirituality in fostering resilience in trauma survivors may advance our understanding of human adaptation to trauma.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Anecdotal evidence suggests that death may be heralded by deathbed phenomena (DBP) such as visions that comfort the dying and prepare them spiritually for death. Medical practitioners have been slow to recognize DBP, and there has been little research into the spiritual effect that DBP have on caregivers or on how these phenomena influence their work. A pilot study looking into the occurrence of DBP was conducted by the palliative care team at Camden Primary Care Trust. Interviews revealed that patients regularly report these phenomena as an important part of their dying process, and that DBP are far broader than the traditional image of an apparition at the end of the bed. Results of the interviews raise concerns about the lack of education or training to help palliative care teams recognize the wider implications of DBP and deal with difficult questions or situations associated with them. Many DBP may go unreported because of this. Results of this pilot study also suggest that DBP are not drug-induced, and that patients would rather talk to nurses than doctors about their experiences.

The attitude towards death and dying depends on the culture. In prehistoric times grave artifacts suggest a belief in the continuation of life. This belief in an afterlife has continued through different cultures and societies to the present day. The fear of death seems to have grown in parallel with those religions which have promised judgment at the time of death. In our modern Western secular society death is regarded as a medical failure, the rituals which used to attend it have largely been abandoned, and life is prolonged so that death has lost all dignity. It is now beginning to be recognised that dying may not be a simple switching off, but a process leading to death and the gradual dissolution of consciousness. This dissolution seems to involve experiences for the dying which are spiritual and important for them. A number of these phenomena raise the possibility that consciousness may not be limited to the brain, but extend beyond it. Fortunately, palliative care is now taught in medical schools, and treatment of the dying is now recognised to be as important as treatment for the living. This article looks at the history of death, the significance of the dying process for consciousness research, and the education needed for carers of the dying.

There seems to be a link between schizotypal symptoms and spiritual experience whereby, in the normal population, individuals with spiritual experiences also indicate relatively high levels of experiences and schizotypal thinking. However, positive features of schizotypy are dominant, for example, magical ideation and unusual perceptual experiences, which are substantially opposite of negative symptoms such as anhedonia, emotional difficulties and interpersonal deficits. For this study, compared to a sample of psychology students “not spiritual” (N = 71) and “spiritual” (N = 131) of both sexes, 24% males and 76% women, age range 17-57 years (average = 24.31, SD = 6.78). Spirituality here is defined as the set of thoughts, ideas, and attitudes unstructured associated with the mystical feeling of unity, not linked to any religious doctrine. There are three hypotheses: (1) you will find a significant difference in positive symptoms of schizotypy between the two groups of students, but (2) will be no significant difference in the negative, and (3) that usually associated with paranormal experiences schizotypy (such as telepathy, see auras, out of body experiences, sense of presence and see apparitions) correlate positively and significantly with positive symptoms of schizotypy rather than the negatives. We found a significant difference in positive symptoms of schizotypy among the group of students ‘spiritual’ (Mean = 14.32) and “spiritual” (Mean = 12.63) (p = .02) but not significant for negative symptoms, was found further that all paranormal experiences correlated significantly with positive symptoms of schizotypy (telepathy r = .25, see the aura r = 15, out of body experiences r = 25, r = sense of presence 33, and see apparitions r = 28, all p <.001, two tailed). Although paranormal phenomena such as telepathy and see the aura is not correlated with negative symptoms of schizotypy, however, found a significant correlation between out of body experience (r = .07, p = .03), sense of presence (r = 11, p = .002) and see apparitions (r = .12, p <.001, two tailed) with negative symptoms, although substantially lower than in the positive symptoms. Possibly mild schizotypal beliefs and experiences may not only be pathological, but positive and beneficial to the individual.

The objective of this study was the investigation of the relationship between spirituality, magical/paranormal ideation and religious coping in an unselected population of patients with OCD or another anxiety disorder. The sample for this study was recruited in the Department of Anxiety Disorders in the University Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in Hamburg, Germany. Psychometric data have been collected by the Revised Paranormal Belief Scale, Magical Ideation Scale and Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiousness/Spirituality in patients with OCD (n=49), other AD (n=36) and healthy samples (n=35).
The preliminary results showed no significant differences among the three groups with respect to the most factors, as well as no significant differences between the OCD and the anxiety groups in all factors. The only statistical significant difference was found between Healthy and non-Healthy individuals with respect to the factor of negative coping, whereby the healthy samples reached lower scores in negative religious coping than the anxiety and OCD groups.
Our study does not support prior studies, suggesting an important role of these traits in the etiopathogenesis of anxiety and OCD. On the other hand, our study validated prior study results showing a significant correlation between negative religious coping and both anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Our results underline a possible major role of negative religious coping in anxiety disorders and support a potential incorporation of R/S aspects in the psychotherapeutic treatment, targeting mainly better cognitive coping strategies for patients.

The relation between religiosity/spirituality (R/S), personal beliefs, and mental health has been extensively studied. However, concerning anxiety disorders (ADs), empirical evidence is scarce. This study investigated the differences in R/S and magical/paranormal ideation among obsessive-compulsive disorder patients (OCD; n = 49), patients with other ADs (n = 36), and healthy controls (HCs; n = 35). Our results suggest negative religious coping as being the only parameter showing significantly higher scores in OCD and AD participants in comparison with HCs. Negative religious coping reflects negative functional expressions of R/S in stressful situations. Logistic regression also suggested negative religious coping as the strongest predictor of group affiliation to the nonhealthy group. Further results show no significant differences between other R/S, magical, and paranormal ideation traits among groups. This study underlines an important role of negative religious coping in ADs yet does not clearly indicate a specific causality. Religious-sensitive treatment targeting cognitive aspects of negative religious coping are discussed.

Background
In the last decades the relationship between religiosity/spirituality (R/S), personal beliefs and mental health has been extensively studied, indicating a significant correlation of these variables. However, the specific relation of R/S to anxiety disorders has been less investigated.
Objective
The objective of this prospective study is the investigation of the relation of R/S, magical ideation (MI) and paranormal beliefs (PB) to anxiety disorders in general and OCD in particular, in order to specifically determine a possible impact of these variables on psychopathology scores. In addition, the relation between R/S, PB and MI can be systematically investigated.
Design & method
Unselected samples with OCD and other anxiety disorders have been equally assessed within the first week after admission with a face-to-face interview including the following instruments: MINI, HAMD, HAMA and Y-BOCS, OCI-R, STAI, Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiosity/Spirituality, Magical Ideation Scale and Revised Paranormal Beliefs Scale. Forty healthy participants with no psychiatric history served as controls.
Results
Groups did not differ in any aspect of R/S, MI, or PB. Almost all scales referring to R/S, PB and MI were positively correlated to each other. The results showed a strong positive correlation between high scores of negative religious coping and high psychopathology scores in depression and anxiety. On the other hand, there was a significant positive correlation between MI scores and initial OCD and anxiety scores.
Conclusion
This study verifies a significant correlation between personal beliefs and psychopathology in OCD and anxiety disorders. Implications for further research are discussed.

Introduction
Religiosity and spirituality are transcultural parameter of human experience with a complex, multidimensional construct. However, research shows religious commitment and practices being not only important for the personal beliefs, but also for physical and mental health. Findings suggest also other personal beliefs, such as magical ideation and paranormal beliefs similarly influencing psychiatric disorders and mental health. However, these factors are far more multidimensional than once thought.
Objectives
The objective of the study is the investigation of the relation of religiosity/spirituality, magical ideation and paranormal beliefs in anxiety disorders and the specification of potential differences in beliefs between OCD and other anxiety disorders.
Methods
Unselected patients with OCD and other anxiety disorders as core diagnosis have been equally assessed within the first week after admission with self-rating tests including the Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiosity/Spirituality (BMMRS), Magical Ideation Scale (MIS) and Revised Paranormal Beliefs Scale (RPBS).
Results
80 patients have been recruited and classified in three groups: OCD, other anxiety disorders and healthy control group. All groups reached in average not significantly deviating RPBS, MIS and BMMRS total scores. However, the three personal belief scales did show an interesting relation to each other. RPBS score correlated significantly with BMMRS (r = .34, p < .01) and with MIS score (r = .56, p < .01), while MIS total scores have shown a significant relationship with almost every subscale of the BMMRS.
Conclusion
This study verifies a significant positive correlation between paranormal beliefs, overall religiosity and magical ideation.

This study aimed to (1) determine if fractal dimension represented a cue which maps onto some basic human desires: a healthy environment, the presence of water, and a sense of spirituality; (2) understand relationships between the fractal dimension of visual scenes, human physiological responses to such scenes and self-reported preference for a visual environment.
Phase 1 showed no significant difference between sites classed as “sacred” vs “secular” and the fractal dimension of the dominant edges in visual images of those sites (W=174, N=40, p=0.25). However, differences for hydrogeological sites were close to significance (shallow vs deep water table: W=23, N=18, p=0.07) and for biodiversity sites were significant (high vs low: W=25, N=40, p=1.34x10-7).
Phase 2 showed a significant negative relationship (r = -0.11, p = 0.03) between the skin conductance magnitude and the fractal dimension of the dominant visual edge, suggesting that visual complexity relates to our level of arousal upon seeing that site. A relationship between expressed preference and fractal dimension was also supported ( = 0.61, p= 0.03).
In combination, this supports the idea that humans have an inherent ability to recognise and prefer environments that are ecologically healthy. Given the change in physiological arousal, this suggests that visual response during dowsing might be a useful area to be pursued by interested researchers (as depth of water table showed a possible negative correlation to fractal dimension, which showed a negative correlation related to skin conductance response, therefore near-to-surface water should show a relaxation response that could be expressed via ideomotor action).

The relationship between belief in extra-terrestrial life, UFO-related beliefs and paranormal belief was investigated. Data were collected via paper-and-pencil and online versions of the measures. Both data collection methods produced similar results and revealed that UFO-related beliefs were more highly correlated with paranormal beliefs than belief in extra-terrestrial life. Partial correlation control- ling for the overlap between belief in extra-terrestrial life and UFO-related beliefs found moderate positive correlations between UFO-related beliefs and paranormal beliefs, and weak negative correlations between belief in extra-terrestrial life and paranormal beliefs. These findings clearly indicated that only the more extreme UFO-related beliefs were associated with paranormal belief.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The project aimed at characterizing the neurocognitive basis of religiousness/spirituality (RS) and its links with the bodily self. First, by using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), we down-regulated neural activity of the inferior parietal (IPL) and prefrontal areas to test possible modifications of implicit RS in healthy subjects. We found that TMS of the IPL increased participants’ implicit RS. Given the role of the parietal cortex in self-awareness and body schema representation, the results suggest that altered parietal activity is a neurophysiological substrate of self-transcendence. Preliminary results on 12 patients with lesion to either parietal or frontal brain regions confirmed the role of the parietal cortex in RS. The links between self-transcendence and bodily self were also investigated in 96 children. We explored how personality traits influence the development of the abilities to mentally rotate bodies and external objects. We found that mental body rotation is acquired later than mental object rotation (from 8-9 vs. 7 years of age) and that personality traits such as cooperativeness and self-transcendence importantly influence the development of these abilities. Finally, we assessed whether training in mindfulness meditation (MM) promotes congruency between implicit and explicit RS and their general increase in healthy subjects. Of note, for MM participants (vs. no MM controls), we found increased implicit RS after MM. Moreover, explicit and implicit RS were correlated, especially after MM. By using different approaches, the present project fostered our knowledge of the neurocognitive processes that allow humans to transcend the spatiotemporal constraints of the physical body increasing their RS.

INTRODUCTION:
Belief in a higher power constitutes a core feature of religiousness and spirituality (RS), two ubiquitous aspects of human experience and behaviour that have long been considered impervious to scientific investigation. Recently, however, cognitive neuroscience studies have shown an association between RS experiences and neural activity in fronto-parietal regions. Much less is known on whether activity in the above areas is causally involved in modulating RS experiences or just epiphenomenal to them.
OBJECTIVES AND METHODS:
Here we combined two-pulse (10 Hz) transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with a novel, ad hoc developed RS-related, implicit Association Test (IAT) to investigate whether implicit RS representations, although supposedly rather stable, can be modified in the short-term by a virtual lesion of inferior parietal lobe (IPL) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). A self-esteem (SE) IAT, focused on self-concepts non related to RS representations, was developed as control.
RESULTS:
The results show that inhibiting the IPL induced a specific increase in RS. In contrast, interfering with the left DLPFC induced a marginal increase of difficulty in controlling automatic associations of the self with both RS and SE dimensions.
CONCLUSIONS:
Thus, suppression of neural activity in parietal regions seems causally involved in the specific induction of fast RS increase. Conversely, the DLPFC appears to contribute to RS in relation to attentional processes or activation of self-related concepts.

Here we combined two-pulse (10 Hz) Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) with a novel, ad-hoc developed RS-related, Implicit Association Test (IAT) to investigate whether implicit RS representations, although supposedly rather stable, can be rapidly modified by a virtual lesion of inferior parietal lobe (IPL) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). A self-esteem (SE) IAT, focused on self-concepts nonrelated to RS representations, was developed as control. A specific increase of RS followed inhibition of IPL demonstrating its causative role in inducing fast plastic changes of religiousness/spirituality. In contrast, DLPFC inhibition had more widespread effects probably reflecting a general role in the acquisition or maintenance of task-rules or in controlling the expression of self-related representations not specific to RS.

Religiousness and spirituality (RS) are ubiquitous in people's lives, but only recently have been considered
susceptible to scientific investigation. While recent studies have shown that a large set of brain areas is
activated during RS experiences, their specific causative role in underpinning stable RS remains to be
determined. In this study, we combined two-pulse (10 Hz) transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with an
Implicit Association Test (IAT) for RS to investigate the role of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and
inferior parietal lobe (IPL) in implicit RS representations. A self-esteem IAT which still focused on selfconcepts
but not on RS-related representations was used as control. The results showed that delivering TMS over the IPL specifically heightened participants' RS, as they found more difficult to associate the self with not-RS dimensions relative to RS dimensions. Moreover, TMS over the left DLPFC marginally increased response times in the incongruent trials of both IATs. Thus, altered neural activity in parietal regions determines fast, reversible changes of self-referential RS representations in healthy individuals, showing the causal role of these brain systems in RS. Conversely, the DLPFC appears to more generally contribute to RS in terms of attentional processes or activation of self-related concepts.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.

Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.
