Experiencias parapsicológicas y de despersonalización: Una encuesta con una muestra Norteamericana de la comunidad
Publication year: 2009
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
INTRODUCTION:
Although there are some questionnaire studies that have explored the relationship between parapsychological experiences and dissociation, there are few studies involving depersonalization experiences. Purpose: We conducted a survey to determine if there was a relationship between parapsychological and depersonalization experiences
PARTICIPANTS:
The study included 256 residents of Charlottesville, Virginia. 62.5% were female and 37.5% were male. Their mean age was 49.29.
METHOD:
Participants were selected in terms of the proportion of residents in the different postal codes of the city. These persons received questionnaires via the mail. Questionnaire: The questionnaire had items about demographic variables, parapsychological experiences (waking and dream ESP, apparitions, out-of-body experiences, and auras), and dreams (disturbing, lucid, and dream recall frequency), and the Cambridge Depersonalisation Scale (CDS).
RESULTS:
Those participants that reported having parapsychological experiences had higher CDS scores that those that did not have those experiences. An Index of Parapsychological Experiences formed by the number of experiences each person had was significantly and positively correlated with the CDS.
DISCUSSION:
The results show significant and positive relations between parapsychological and depersonalization experiences. This does not necessarily indicate pathology. There are individuals that have depersonalization experiences without having a psychiatric diagnosis.

Synchronicity in the therapeutic setting: A survey of practitioners
Publication year: 2016
URL:
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/capr.12057/abstract
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
AIMS
In this study, we intended to explore whether there are any differences between counsellors, psychologists and psychotherapists in the reporting and interpretation of synchronicity experiences (SEs) in the therapeutic setting. SEs are defined as psychologically meaningful connections between inner events (such as a thought, vision or feeling) and one or more external events occurring simultaneously or at a future point in time.
DESIGN
An online survey link was emailed to a random sample of counsellors, psychologists and psychotherapists drawn from membership lists of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), British Psychological Society (BPS) and the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). The survey was designed to investigate the following research questions: do practitioners report SEs in the therapeutic setting? Are there any differences between types of practitioners in terms of explanations for SEs? Were SEs believed to be more likely to occur at certain points in therapy?
RESULTS
A total of 226 respondents completed the survey. One hundred respondents (44%) reported that they had experienced synchronicity in the therapeutic setting, of whom 55 were psychotherapists, 21 counsellors and 24 psychologists. The majority of respondents (67%) felt that SEs could be useful for therapy. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences between practitioner types in their interpretation of SEs but no differences in perception of when synchronicity events were likely to occur.
CONCLUSION
Findings have important implications for how practitioners may respond to clients who report SEs and are discussed alongside suggestions for future research.

Final report - Development and implementation of a comprehensive survey of secular American mediums
Publication year: 2017
URL:
https://www.bial.com/imagem/Grant_37214.pdf
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND:
Previous research with mediums can only be generalized to specific belief system- and geographically-associated populations. The subset of American mediums not associated with any formal organization and who hold no organized belief system are the majority in the US but their general demographics and other characteristics have not been specifically assessed.
AIMS:
This study aimed to gather novel data regarding demographic, cognitive, psychological, physiological, and phenomenological characteristics of self-identifying mediums in the US.
METHOD:
This study used established survey development and piloting methods to create novel web-based instruments and included quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis methods and computerized text analysis techniques. The survey used standard questionnaires and newly developed items. Data was collected from 1,068 non-mediums and 316 mediums.
RESULTS:
The medium and non-medium participants showed no significant differences in age, race, gender, education, or income. Mediums demonstrated statistically significantly higher psychological well-being, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, fantasy proneness, disease burden, childhood trauma, and environmental sensitivities. Roughly 97% of medium respondents reported being able to tell the difference between communication from the deceased and psychic information about the living. Quantitative differences in the two experiences included social and perceptual processes and insight. Qualitative analyses demonstrated that psychic information about the living comes from various sources including the deceased.
CONCLUSIONS:
Secular American mediums have unique psychological, personality, cognitive, and experiential characteristics; descriptions of mediumistic and psychic experiences are quantitatively different; the current language used to discuss mediumship does not accurately reflect the actual phenomenon; and pluralist methods can be used to study mediumship.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Mediumship research at the Windbridge Institute includes a three-tiered approach to investigations of secular, American mediums. The Information, Operation, and Application research programs examine (i) the accuracy of the information mediums report; (ii) the mediums’ phenomenology, physiology, and psychology, and (iii) the potential social applications of mediumship readings, respectively. As part of the Operation research program, the current study develops and employs web-based surveys in order to gather novel data potentially identifying of unique demographic, cognitive, psychological, physiological, familial, cultural, and phenomenological characteristics of self-identifying mediums in the US. Surveys regarding anomalous experiences and beliefs have regularly been an important research methodology in parapsychology and associated psychological, sociological, etc., fields. The findings from previous survey research with mediums can only be generalized to the specific, organized, belief system- and geographically-associated populations under examination. The subset of American mediums not associated with any formal national organization and who hold no organized belief system may potentially serve as the majority in the US but have not, to our knowledge, been specifically assessed using instruments designed to gather information about their general demographics and other characteristics. The study consists of two parts. In Part 1, responses to standardized questionnaires are collected from both medium and non-medium US Internet users. Basic sociodemographic data as well as information about respondents’ major personality characteristics; psychological well-being; compassion; spiritual experiences; fear of death; and childhood abuse and trauma is collected using previously published standardized surveys. In addition, questionnaires were created to assess physical health; end-of-life and after death communication experiences; and awareness and experience of psi-related phenomena. In Part 2, the mediums who participated in Part 1 are invited to complete additional survey materials requesting specific information about their mediumistic experiences. That survey includes open-ended and forced choice elements assessing aspects of the respondents’ history, practices, and experiences. Part 2 also includes open-ended items inquiring about experiences during communication with the deceased. This text collected describing the mediums’ phenomenology in their own words will be analyzed using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) text analysis software which calculates the degree to which 80 different psychologically meaningful categories of words including positive/negative emotions, self-references, causal words, attentional focus, emotionality, social relationship including honesty and deception, and thinking styles are used in a given text. Findings from this study will elucidate potentially unique characteristics of secular American mediums not heretofore examined. The study will also provide the groundwork for more detailed hypotheses and further studies of more specific aspects of mediumship in this growing population; this may include future studies of the potential psychological, biological, and/or neurophysiological correlates of the mediumistic experience.

French survey on pain perception and management in patients with locked-in syndrome

Abstract/Results: Patients with locked-in syndrome (LIS) may suffer from pain, which can significantly affect their daily life and well-being. In this study, we aim to investigate the presence and the management of pain in LIS patients. Fifty-one participants completed a survey collecting socio-demographic information and detailed reports regarding pain perception and management (type and frequency of pain, daily impact of pain, treatments). Almost half of the LIS patients reported experiencing pain (49%) that affected their quality of life, sleep and cognition. The majority of these patients reported that they did not communicate their pain to clinical staff. Out of the 25 patients reporting pain, 18 (72%) received treatment (60% pharmacological, 12% non-pharmacological) and described the treatment efficacy as ‘moderate’. In addition, 14 (56%) patients were willing to try other non-pharmacological treatments, such as hypnosis or meditation. This study provides a comprehensive characterization of pain perception in LIS patients and highlights the lack of guidelines for pain detection and its management. This is especially pertinent given that pain affects diagnoses, by either inducing fatigue or by using pharmacological treatments that modulate the levels of wakefulness and concentration of such patients.
