    • The Boolean operator AND between the terms is assumed by default. If you enter the words European Union in the search box, the system returns all records in which both words occur, regardless of their order.
    • When entering a set of words in quotes, e.g "european union", all records containing the literal term "European Union" will be retrieved.
  • Search by access fields (e.g. author, title, etc.):
    • To direct your search, choose the field in which you want to search the word or expression.
    • Search in the field assumes by default the expression in quotes, e.g. European union will retrieve all records containing the literal term "European Union"
  • To perform more complex searches, additional words or expressions may be added.
  • If you want to refine the search results, you can always access the link "search" in the upper left corner of the page of search results.
  • The search engine is not case sensitive. For example, the word congress has the same meaning that Congress or CONGRESS.
  • To truncate your search expression, use the $ character

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Tested the hypothesized association between transliminality and synesthesia in 2 correlational studies. Participants in Study 1 were 115 persons (aged 18–73 yrs), half of whom suffered from panic attacks and half of whom were their support-givers, who had taken part in an experiment by M. A. Thalbourne et al (1997). Materials included a factor score representing degree of transliminality and a 6-item synesthesia scale derived from the Absorption Scale (A. Tellegen and G. Atkinson, 1974). The Spearman rank correlation between scores on transliminality and synesthesia was .47. Participants in Study 2 were 242 psychology students (aged 17–63 yrs) in a study by Thalbourne (1998). Materials included the 29-item Transliminality Scale and the 6-item synesthesia scale. The Spearman rank correlation between scores on transliminality and synesthesia was .57. In both samples, scores on Tellegen's synesthesia scale consistently showed moderate correlations with 2 measures of transliminality. The authors interpret these findings as consistent with the hypothesis that transliminality involves "enhanced interconnectedness" in the brain, with 2 caveats.

Psychological correlates of aura vision: Psychic experiences, dissociation, absorption, and synaesthesia-like experiences
Publication year: 2009
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
Five survey studies, three conducted from 1995 to 1997 and two more in 2007 and 2008, are reported in which we hypothesised that individuals who claimed to be "aura viewers" would report a higher frequency of other seemingly psychic, mystical and lucid dream experiences and a higher number of discrete psychic experiences than "non-aura viewers." For Studies 2 through 5, it was also hypothesised that aura viewers would obtain a similar relationship with synaesthesia-like experiences and with measures of dissociation (using the Dissociative Experiences Scale), absorption (using Tellegen's Absorption Scale), and depersonalisation (using the Cambridge Depersonalisation Scale). The studies also differed in terms of the language of administration (either Spanish or English) and study populations (from special interest groups to college students to members of the general public). In all five studies, the main hypotheses were confirmed with the exception of lucid dreams, a significant difference between the groups being found only in Studies 3 and 5. In Studies 2 through 5, the predicted relationship of aura vision to synaesthesia and personality variables was confirmed. All five studies suggest that aura vision experiences relate to an overall pattern of claims of psychic and mystical experiences. The consistency of the results was surprising, given the differences in sample selection, language of administration, and study location.

Disruption of synaesthesia by posthypnotic suggestion: An ERP study
Publication year: 2010
URL:
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S002839321000299X
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This study examined whether the behavioral and electrophysiological correlates of synaesthetic response conflict could be disrupted by posthypnotic suggestion. We recorded event-related brain potentials while a highly suggestible face-color synaesthete and matched controls viewed congruently and incongruently colored faces in a color-naming task. The synaesthete, but not the controls, displayed slower response times, and greater P1 and sustained N400 ERP components over frontal-midline electrodes for incongruent than congruent faces. The behavioral and N400 markers of response conflict, but not the P1, were abolished following a posthypnotic suggestion for the termination of the participant's synaesthesia and reinstated following the cancellation of the suggestion. These findings demonstrate that the conscious experience of synaesthesia can be temporarily abolished by cognitive control.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
1628 people (63% female; age range 18-80+) began the survey. Types of synaesthesia varied in incidence and occur under a variety of circumstances. The Synaesthesia Experiences Questionnaire (SEQ) was not normally distributed. It was internally reliable (Cronbach’s a = .98) and loaded onto 1 factor. SEQ scores correlated with Anomalous Experiences Inventory scores, rho= .49, p< .0001. Those who have traditional paranormal experiences scored higher on the SEQ than non-experiencers. SEQ scores correlated with positive schizotypy, rho= .46, p= .001. There was no systematic relationship between synaesthesia and well-being. This relationship appears to be mediated by schizotypy cluster membership. Twenty-seven synaesthetes (3 male and 24 female, age range 18-70) were age and gender matched to 27 controls. Each completed the SEQ, the TimeStyleTM inventory (Fortunato & Furey, 2011), the synaesthesia subscale of the Tellegen Absorption Scale, Bem’s precognitive memory task (2011), a Mental time travel task (D’Argenbeau & Van Der Linden, 2004) and an interview. There was no evidence for psi in the combined group (d = .05), the controls (d= -.014) or the synaesthetes (d= -.00). Neither the difference in scoring between synaesthetes and controls or correlation between scoring on the SEQ and psi were significant. Synaesthetic associators scored higher on psi than projectors (z= -2.00, p= .047; post hoc). Future thinking correlated with scoring on the SEQ, rho = .35, p =.011 but not with psi. Past thinking correlated with psi (r = -.277, p= .043). Mental time travel did not relate to psi but some variables were stronger in synaesthetes. An IPA suggests that ability to represent is important in synaesthesia and anomalous experiences.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Several authors have observed that there is a relationship between synesthesia and anomalous experiences. In addition, there is evidence that those who are psychometrically anomaly-prone (e.g., high scorers on positive schizotypy and boundary thinness) may be more likely to experience synesthesia. To date, however, the literature is sparse in terms of the explicit exploration of the relationships between synesthesia and anomalous experiences. It is also the case that most researchers have employed the Synesthesia subscale of the Tellegen Absorption scale to assess synesthetic experiences in the general population which has some limitations. This study also explores the idea that synesthesia may be associated with ESP performance as some attributes of strong synesthesia (consiousness binding, a greater ability to consciously perceive weak stimuli and better episodic memory and visual-spatial skills for some forms of synesthesia) may be psi-conducive. An online survey (executed via SurveyMonkey) is currently exploring the incidence and distribution of the synesthesias in a self-selected sample, and the relationship between the synesthesias, personality, mental health and anomalous experiences (including a new extensive measure of synesthetic experiences). A second study is exploring group differences between 25 strong synesthetes and 25 matched control participants on memory (a mental time travel task), orientation to time (scores on the Time Styles inventory TM) and performance at Bem‘s precognitive memory task. Correlations will also be undertaken between Time Styles inventoryTM scores and precognitive memory performance and between mental time travel ability and precognitive memory performance. Open-ended interviews exploring the relationship between synesthesia and anomalous experiences are also being conducted.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Dr. Simmonds-Moore will discuss the idea that synesthesia (or the synesthesias) may underpin a variety of anomalous experiences, including ESP. For example, several authors have explored the idea that synesthesia may be associted with anomalous experiences (including the aura and out of body experiences). In addition, those who are psychometrically anomaly-prone (scoring high on personality dimensions which are more likely to report anomalous experiences, score high on measures of paranormal belief and potentially to score higher on laboratory based measures of ESP; namely positive schizotypy and related variables) may be more likely to experience synesthesia. However, the literature is sparse in terms of the explicit exploration of the relationships between synesthesia and anomalous experiences. In addition, where researchers have considered these relationships, they have often employed the Synesthesia subscale of the Tellegen Absorption scale to assess synesthetic experiences in the general population, which has some limitations. There are several features associated with synesthesia which suggest that strong synesthetes may perform better at a laboratory based ESP test (including consiousness binding, a greater ability to consciously perceive weak stimuli and better episodic memory and visual-spatial skills for some forms of synesthesia). An ongoing two-part research project will be described which will examine the relationship between synesthesia and anomalous experiences. In an online survey investigation, a synesthesia questionnaire has been developed to measure the full range of these types of experience. Respondents will also complete questionnaires about their anomalous experiences (including ESP experiences), personality and mental health. This will allow for a systematic evaluation of the incidence of the synesthesias and the relationship between synesthesia and anomaly-proneness in the general population. In a second investigation, a laboratory experiment will investigate the idea that those who are strong synesthetes may perform better at an ESP task and that they may have better episodic and other memory ability than other people, which may underpin ESP ability. This study will compare performance on a mental time travel task and on a version of Bem’s precognitive memory task to compare performance between synesthetes and a group of matched controls.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Mirror-touch synesthesia (MTS) is the conscious experience of tactile sensations induced by seeing someone else touched. This paper considers two different, although not mutually exclusive, theoretical explanations and, in the final section, considers the relation between MTS and other forms of synesthesia and also other kinds of vicarious perception (e.g., contagious yawning). The Threshold Theory explains MTS in terms of hyper-activity within a mirror system for touch and/or pain. This offers a good account for some of the evidence (e.g., from fMRI) but fails to explain the whole pattern (e.g., structural brain differences outside of this system; performance on some tests of social cognition). The Self-Other Theory explains MTS in terms of disturbances in the ability to distinguish the self from others. This can be construed in terms of over-extension of the bodily self in to others, or as difficulties in the control of body-based self-other representations. In this account, MTS is a symptom of a broader cognitive profile. We suggest this meets the criteria for synesthesia, despite the proximal causal mechanisms remaining largely unknown, and that the tendency to localize vicarious sensory experiences distinguishes it from other kinds of seemingly related phenomena (e.g., non-localized affective responses to observing pain).

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
The stimulation of the temporal areas of the brain with mild electromagnetic pulsing has been associated with experiences of a sensed presence.
AIMS
This study explored the roles of paranormal belief, time of day and wearing a sham God Helmet on state of consciousness and the frequency of reported anomalous experiences. The contributing roles of synesthesia, hyperaesthesia and locus of control (LOC) were also explored.
METHOD
Thirty-two skeptics and 35 believers took part in an orientation session and three study sessions: a morning baseline (no helmet/baseline) session, a morning sham helmet session and an afternoon sham helmet session. Participants relaxed in a Faraday chamber for 30 minutes with the instruction to observe and verbalize their experiences. Exit interviews explored subjective experiences. Participants completed the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI). An inductive thematic analysis identified a coding scheme for types of anomalous experiences.
RESULTS
Believers scored higher than disbelievers on Altered Experiences (AE), Positive Affect (PA) and Imagery (IM), but there were no differences in scoring on any of PCI dimensions between the three study conditions. Transcripts were blind coded for the occurrence of 15 types of anomalous experience. A series of chi square analyses identified more anomalous experiences for believers than skeptics. There were also more visual presence, flashes of color and auditory hallucinations in the helmet sessions compared to the baseline. Belief, anomalous experiences, hyperaesthesia and synesthesia correlated with some PCI variables and anomalous experiences.
CONCLUSIONS
Individual differences play a strong role in the aetiology of anomalous experiences when people wear a sham God helmet.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
It has been claimed that applying weak complex electromagnetic patterns to the temporal lobes in a “God Helmet” stimulates the intrusion of right-hemispheric processes to awareness, resulting in exceptional experiences (ExEs). We explored the roles of wearing a sham helmet, time of day, and individual differences (paranormal belief, synesthesia, locus of control, hyperesthesia, and prior anomalous experiences) in alterations in consciousness and ExEs in the absence of neural stimulation. Thirty-two skeptics and 35 paranormal believers completed baseline, sham (morning), and sham (afternoon) conditions. Participants relaxed in a Faraday chamber for 30?minutes. Exit interviews explored subjective experiences and participants completed the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI). A mixed-model analysis of covariance found that believers scored higher than skeptics on some PCI dimensions, there was no influence of study conditions on PCI scores, and there was no interaction between belief and study conditions. An inductive thematic analysis identified a coding scheme for ExE. Believers reported more ExEs than skeptics. Regression models supported roles for hyperesthesia in alterations in consciousness and synesthesia in ExEs.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Previous research has indicated that there may be a role for synesthesia in exceptional experiences, including experiences which have been labeled “paranormal.” The current project sought to further understand what it is like to experience the world synesthetically and how synesthesia can inform our understanding of exceptional experiences (ExE). A case study was undertaken with a 27-year-old male participant (“Harry”) who experienced several forms of strong synesthesia in addition to exceptional experiences and cognitive and perceptual abilities (e.g., subjective paranormal experiences, musical ability, mathematical ability, enhanced memory skills). A semi-structured interview exploring his experiences was undertaken. An interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was conducted on the interview transcripts, which resulted in the identification of five main themes. The themes can be summarized as relationship with synesthesia, complexity/kaleidoscope of representations, access to meaning, control of synesthesia and manipulation of representations, and exceptional abilities. The synesthesias appear to bestow an ability to represent (and access meanings associated with) subtle and abstract aspects of Harry‘s lived experience including ExEs and appear to be aligned with strong metacognitive abilities. Findings corroborate recent research in neuroscience which suggest that synesthetic experiences are associated with the activation of concepts.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT
We used an online survey to investigate the relations among synesthesia, schizotypy, exceptional experiences (ExEs), and well-being. Participants (N = 1,628 [listwise N = 767]; male = 619, female = 1,064) completed a Synesthesia Experience Questionnaire (SEQ), a general question about synesthetic experiences (Hartmann, 1991), the Anomalous Experience Subscale (AES) of the Anomalous Experience Inventory (Gallagher, Kumar, & Pekala, 1994), questions about parapsychological experiences, a multidimensional measure of schizotypy (Oxford-Liverpool Inventory for Feelings and Experiences Short [O-LIFE Short]; Mason, Linney, & Claridge, 2005), and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS; Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985). Cronbach’s alphas for these measures ranged from .63 to .90 in our data set. Approximately half (54.4%) of the sample reported 1 or more synesthetic experiences, although the rate was much lower for synesthesias experienced on a consistent basis (3.1%). The SEQ was highly internally reliable and correlated positively with the AES, number of parapsychological experiences, and unusual experiences, and negatively with introvertive anhedonia. The SEQ was not directly related to the SWLS. Unusual experiences and synesthesia were the strongest predictors of the AES and parapsychological experiences in multiple regression models. A cluster analysis of schizotypy found 4 clusters of schizotypy, including 1 cluster reflecting healthy schizotypy, 1 reflecting high schizotypy, 1 reflecting low schizotypy, and 1 reflecting negative schizotypy. We compared clusters in terms of the SWLS, ExEs, and the SEQ and found significant differences for all variables and higher scores for healthy compared with high schizotypy on all variables. We discuss the complex relations among synesthesia, schizotypy, and well-being.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Prior research indicates that synesthesia may play a role in the etiology of ghost experiences
AIMS
A survey explored whether synesthetes differed from non synesthetes on ghost experiences, frequencies of differently appraised ghost experiences, senses and spatial locations of ghost experiences, psychometric predictors of ghost experiences (transliminality, boundary thinness, creativity, somatic focus, interoception and locus of control). Qualitative analysis of narratives using grounded theory. The psychomanteum explored synesthesia, geomagnetic field (GMF), electromagnetic field (emf), heart rate variability, and the output of a random number generator (RNG) in exceptional experiences (ExE).
METHOD
An online survey explored correlates of ghost experiences. A psychomanteum compared 15 synesthetes with 15 non synesthetes on ExE and their correlates.
RESULTS
Synesthetes reported more ghost experiences with a paranormal appraisal. Boundaries, creativity, interoception and somatic focus correlated with ghost experiences with a paranormal appraisal. Transliminality was the strongest independent predictor. The RNG output correlated negatively and significantly with the extent to which ExE were rated as taking up space. Post hoc analysis indicates that this effect was for synesthetes only. The GMF (nanoTesla) and local emf (milliGauss) influenced the levels of heart rate variability. GMF correlated with the extent to which experiences took up space.
CONCLUSIONS
Synesthesia, creativity, boundaries and awareness of the body play a role in ghost experiences. Results of the psychomanteum study are suggestive of interactions between subjective experience and the local and non-local environment, particularly among synesthetes.

We first review recent work from our laboratory, which construes hypnotizability as an example of a more general trait of capacity for phenomenological control, which people can use to create subjective experiences in many non-hypnotic contexts where those experiences fulfill people’s goals. Second, we review recent work, which construes phenomenological control as a specifically metacognitive process, where intentional cognitive and motor action occurs without awareness of specific intentions (cold control theory). In terms of the reach of phenomenological control, we argue that various laboratory phenomena, namely vicarious pain, mirror-touch synesthesia, and the rubber hand illusion are to an unknown degree a construction of phenomenological control. The argument can of course be extended in principle to other findings. In terms of the reach of cold
control, we present a new theory of intentional binding and show how intentional binding can measure the absence of conscious intentions in the hypnotic context. We obtain no evidence that cold control confers abilities beyond the changes in the metacognitive monitoring it postulates, and we explore the negative correlation between mindfulness and cold control viewed as a lack of mindfulness of intentions.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Exceptional experiences (ExE) incorporate a range of phenomena including subjective paranormal and transpersonal experiences. Synesthesia and synesthetic experiences are discussed as important variables in understanding the etiologies of ExE. The neural and psychological correlates of synesthetic experiences (associated with hyperconnectivity) are discussed in relation to ExE. It is argued that synesthetic processes enable both the detection and conscious perception of information from a range of sources that are usually unseen or inaccessible, including abstract, unlanguaged, preconscious, and potentially other nonlocal sources.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objectives: This project sought to further explore the psychometric correlates of different types of apparitional experiences, with a particular focus on synaesthesia, creativity, perceptual sensitivity, different types of boundary thinness and body-based awareness (interoception and somatic focus). We predicted that there would be a difference between synaesthetes and non-synaesthetes in the general tendency to experience apparitional experiences. We also predicted that synesthesia (scored as a dummy variable), creative tendencies, sensitivity, body awareness and boundary thinness would positively predict scoring on a
general tendency to experience apparitions (in a regression analysis). We also planned to explore differences between ways of experiencing apparitions (including eyes open compared to closed; visual compared to other sensory experiences and spatial versus in the body) on personality scoring (using MANOVA). We also planned to sample a subset of different types of apparitional experience to develop a theory of apparitional experiences using grounded theory.
Design & Methods: This study was run as an online survey using Qualtrics. A series of questions that describe a range of different
apparitional experiences were developed from existing measures. This included 2 items pertaining to apparitions from the Anomalous Experience Inventory and 5 items from Irwin, Drinkwater and Dagnall (2013). The research team added an item pertaining to “visit dreams” (a type of encounter with the deceased that only occurs during the dream state). Questions were written neutrally, but with response options that allowed for paranormal or mainstream appraisals for experiences. Additional questions asked about different ways of experiencing apparitions (including whether eyes were open or closed, the senses that were involved in the experience, the spatial location of the experience and the nature of the apparitional experiences; presented as an open-ended question). A battery of individual difference measures included a measure of creativity (Weibel, Martarelli, Häberli & Mast, 2017); synesthetic experiences; locus of control, the Revised Transliminality Scale; Hartmann’s Boundary Questionnaire a measure of hyperaesthesia and two measures of body awareness (interoception - Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA), Mehling, 2012) and a brief measure of somatic focus). The study url was distributed locally (to students in the psychology department at UWG, all staff and faculty at UWG and the community surrounding UWG) in addition to psychology students at Northwest Missouri State University and via social media.
Results: Data will be analyzed using quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative analysis will include difference tests (synaesthetes versus non-synaesthetes) and correlations between individual difference variables and general tendencies to experience apparitions. Regression analyses will explore the statistical predictors of apparitional experiences (from the battery of individual difference measures). Comparisons between different ways of experiencing an apparition in terms of scoring on personality variables will be calculated using a series of MANOVA calculations. A grounded theory will be undertaken on a subset of openended responses concerning different types of apparitional experiences to develop a theory of this type of experiences.
Conclusions: This research extends existing knowledge about the psychology of apparitional experiences.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Synesthetic experiences of color have been traditionally conceptualized as a perceptual phenomenon. However, recent evidence suggests a role of higher order cognition in the formation of synesthetic experiences. Here, we discuss how synesthetic experiences of color differ from and influence veridical color processing, and how non-perceptual processes such as imagery and color memory might play a role in eliciting synesthetic color experience.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Synaesthesia is a rare phenomenon in which stimulation in one modality (e.g., audition) evokes a secondary percept not associated with the first (e.g., colour). Prior work has suggested links between synaesthesia and other neurodevelopmental conditions that are linked to altered social perception abilities. With this in mind, here we sought to examine social perception abilities in grapheme-colour synaesthesia (where achromatic graphemes evoke colour experiences) by examining facial identity and facial emotion perception in synaesthetes and controls. Our results indicate that individuals who experience grapheme-colour synaesthesia outperformed controls on tasks involving fine visual discrimination of facial identity and emotion, but not on tasks involving holistic face processing. These findings are discussed in the context of broader perceptual and cognitive traits previously associated with synaesthesia for colour, with the suggestion that performance benefits shown by grapheme-colour synaesthetes may be related to domain-general visual discrimination biases observed in this group.
