Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
This research extended to a neuropsychiatric population findings by Neppe and by Persinger that subjective paranormal experiences (SPEs) are associated with temporal lobe dysfunction (TLD) in the brain. The sample consisted of 100 of Neppe’s patients. TLD was defined by 4 diagnostic criteria: (a) symptomatology as measured by 16 TLD-specific items from Neppe’s INSET questionnaire; (b) predisposing conditions (recreational drugs, brain damage); (c) anomalous electroencephalographic (EEG) activity; and (d) response to anti-convulsant drugs. SPEs were measured by questions on the INSET referring to ESP, apparitional, and out-of-body experiences. TLD criteria and SPEs were coded independently by 2 raters. 60 patients classified as having TLD had more SPEs than 27 patients who were not (p<.05, one-tailed). 13 borderline patients on TLD were removed. Supplementary regression analyses revealed that this result was due entirely to symptoms (INSET) as predictor (p < .001). Females reported significantly more TLD symptoms and SPEs than males, but this confound did not destroy the INSET-SPE relationship. Phone interviews of 20 patients reporting SPEs confirmed that the great majority had at least one credible ESP experience. Secondary analyses using as predictors specific INSET items and EEG variables indicated that ESP experiences were positively associated with rightside lateralization (left-hemisphere dominance), and high scores on auditory/visual hallucinations and jamais vu. ESP experiences were most common among females with relatively highfrequency EEG abnormalities in the left temporal (and to a lesser degree) left frontal brain areas, but that were not generalized. This effect significantly reversed for males.

Exploratory analysis of refined predictors of subjective ESP experiences and temporal lobe dysfunction in a neuropsychiatric population

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Following up on previous research indicating a relationship between symptoms of temporal lobe dysfunction (TLD) and subjective paranormal experiences, exploratory logistic regression analyses were conducted to discover specific predictors of subjective ESP experiences (S-ESP) among 100 neuropsychiatric patients of Neppe. Predictors included gender, age, 16 items from a questionnaire measuring symptoms of TLD (INSET), clinical and ambulatory EEG measures reflecting the location and type of anomalous EEG activity, measures of handedness and brain laterality, use of specific recreational drugs, and brain injuries. The final model defined the S-ESP group as right-lateralized females scoring high on INSET items reflecting jamais vu and primitive visual or auditory hallucinations. A significant interaction was found between gender and EEG anomalies occurring in the temporal lobes and sometimes extending to adjacent areas, but not generalized over the whole scalp. These anomalies were positively related to S-ESP in females and negatively in males. The effect for females was contributed entirely by activity other than slowing (mostly spiking, sharp waves, and bursts of beta or alpha) that occurred in the left hemisphere, sometimes extending bilaterally to the right temporal, or the frontal lobes. These exploratory findings need to be cross-validated before the results can be considered conclusive.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Participants (Ps) (N=64), equally divided between strong believers in the paranormal and strong skeptics, guessed out loud which number (1-4) a pseudo-RNG would select for each trial while simultaneously clicking the mouse. In the 1st 2 of 4 runs, the target sequences (N=81) were biased, reflecting either pure repetition avoidance (RA) or pure counting (CO), e.g., 2,3,4,1,2,3. As expected, scoring was above chance in both runs but significant only in the RA run. Although all Ps demonstrated marked RA, the deficit was only slightly greater for believers than skeptics.
In the RA run, RA correlated negatively and significantly with hits for believers; the correlation reversed slightly for skeptics.
Between Runs 2 and 3, Ps completed a drawing task and questionnaires measuring tolerance of ambiguity and temporal lobe dysfunction (LIMBEX). Believers scored dramatically higher than skeptics on LIMBEX.
Targets for Run 3 (N=101) were random, except that if P clicked the mouse when a computer address contained a 1 rather than a 0 (1-state), which occurred randomly 20% of the time, their target for the next trial matched their personal response bias as calculated from the preceding 2 runs. As predicted from decision augmentation theory, believers clicked the mouse when the computer was in the 1-state significantly more often than chance expectation and significantly more often than did skeptics.
In the last run (N=100), Ps received either subliminal or supraliminal feedback of the preceding target. For half of each group, after trials 1-10 the targets repeated Ps’ previous responses with a lag of 10 (pro-bias targets). The other Ps received a target sequence diametrically opposite to their response bias in Runs 1 and 2 (counter-bias targets). Contrary to expectation, only skeptics showed a greater increase in correct guesses from the 1st to the 2nd half of the run (implicit sequence learning, or ISL) with pro-bias than counter-bias targets. The subliminality manipulation had no effect. The ISL effect reversed slightly for high LIMBEX Ps; thus, temporal lobe instability seems to prevent ISL. Runs 3 and 4 also tested the “anomalous anticipation effect.” As predicted from the results of 2 previous experiments, skeptics correctly anticipated the nature of the bias (pro or counter) in Run 4 by manifesting the corresponding bias in Run 3, whereas believers anticipated incorrectly. However, this result occurred only if the Run 4 targets were subliminal.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
New findings from this project have shown that specific neurocognitive biases do appear to underlie certain anomalous bodily experiences (e.g., the out-of-body experience: OBE). The OBE groups showed distinct profiles on measures of; (i) embodied and disembodied perspective-taking; (ii) measures of cortical hyperexcitability; (iii) measures of the rubber-hand illusion, and its psychophysical correlates; and (iv) instability in temporal-lobe processing. In addition, the current evidence suggests that previous tasks have not been sensitive enough to reveal such important differences. As a consequence, the tasks which have been developed as part of this project for measuring concepts like cortical hyperexcitabiity, perspective-taking, and the rubber-hand illusion have led to a significant contribution that will have a large impact on the field of research. As well as making important contributions to scientific theory, the present project will also lead to important methodological improvements in the assessment of the neurocognitive correlates of the out-of-body experience and guide future research in the field. Findings from the project have been published in major international peer-reviewed neuroscience journals and more publications are currently being reviewed.

Evidence for elevated cortical hyperexcitability and its association with out-of-body experiences in the non-clinical population: new findings from a pattern-glare task
Publication year: 2013
URL:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22209090
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Individuals with no history of neurological or psychiatric illness can report hallucinatory Out-of-Body Experiences (OBEs) and display elevated scores on measures of temporal-lobe dysfunction (Braithwaite et al., 2011). However, all previous investigations of such biases in non-clinical populations are based on indirect questionnaire measures. Here we present the first empirical investigation that a non-clinical OBE group is subject to pattern-glare, possibly as a result of cortical hyperexcitability (Wilkins et al., 1984). Fifty-nine students at the University of Birmingham viewed a series of square-wave gratings with spatial frequencies of approximately .7, 3 and 11 cycles-per-degree, both black/white and of contrasting colours. The illusions and discomfort reported when viewing gratings with mid-range spatial frequency have been hypothesized to reflect cortical hyperexcitability (Wilkins, 1995; Huang et al., 2003). Participants also completed the Cardiff Anomalous Perception Scale (CAPS: Bell et al., 2006) which included experiential measures of disruptions in 'Temporal-lobe Experience'. Participants who reported OBEs also reported significantly more visual illusions/distortions and significantly greater discomfort as a result of viewing the mid-frequency gratings. There were no such differences with respect to gratings with relatively lower or higher spatial frequency. The OBE group also produced significantly elevated scores on the CAPS measures of Temporal-lobe Experience, relative to controls. Collectively, the results are consistent with there being a neural 'vulnerability' in the cortices of individuals pre-disposed to some hallucinations, even in the non-clinical population.

Recent evidence suggests that the complex neurocognitive processes underlying stable self-awareness and embodiment are not error-proof and can breakdown, leading to striking distortions in body-image and body-based hallucinations. One such hallucination is the Out-of-Body Experience (OBE). The current dominant view is that perspective-taking processes in the temporo-parietal junction regions may sub-serve the shift in perspective underlying the experiential content of the OBE. In this presentation, Dr Braithwaite will review the prior neurological evidence for these assertions and question some of the assumptions surrounding the behavioural tasks employed to investigate these claims. In addition, he will present the latest and most recent findings from his own laboratory showing that (i) previous tasks employed to assess spatial aspects of the OBE are unlikely to be perspective-taking tasks; (ii) non-clinical OBEers display elevated scores on measures of temporal-lobe dysfunction; (iii) OBEers do show specific biases in body-transformation processing – when methodological limitations are addressed; (iv) OBEers display an advantage for elevated perspective-taking tasks relative to controls; and (v) he will present evidence from a new task which has revealed increased levels of cortical hyperexcitabililiy in the OBE population.
