Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The way people process stressors is critical in determining whether or not trauma will be experienced. Some clinical and neuroimaging findings suggest that posttraumatic stress disorder patients experience difficulty in synthesizing the traumatic experience in a comprehensive narrative. Religiousness and spirituality are strongly based on a personal quest for understanding of questions about life and meaning. Building narratives based on healthy perspectives may facilitate the integration of traumatic sensorial fragments in a new cognitive synthesis, thus working to decrease post-traumatic symptoms. Given the potential effects of spiritual and religious beliefs on coping with traumatic events, the study of the role of spirituality in fostering resilience in trauma survivors may advance our understanding of human adaptation to trauma.

BACKGROUND:
Mediumship research at the Windbridge Institute includes a three-tiered approach to investigations of secular, American mediums. The Information, Operation, and Application research programs examine (i) the accuracy of the mediums’ information; (ii) the mediums’ phenomenology, physiology, and psychology, and (iii) the social applications of mediumship readings, respectively. Studying mediums’ physiology as part of the Operation research program may help in managing medical issues in mediums. An informal survey of Windbridge Certified Research Mediums (WCRMs) demonstrated that chronic medical problems may be a serious concern for this population. For example, this sample has seven times the incidence of autoimmune disorders compared to the incidence in the general US population. And the incidence of migraines in female WCRMs is nearly two and a half times the prevalence in women in the US.
AIM:
The purpose of this study was to systematically investigate the biological components of anomalous information reception (AIR; the reporting of accurate and specific information about the deceased in the absence of prior knowledge, feedback, or deceptive means) in these mediums.
METHOD:
General physiological measures and 28 hematological elements during mediumship readings and a control task were examined.
RESULTS:
Data collected do not demonstrate any significant changes in these measures when pre- and post-condition comparisons were made for the counter-balanced sessions.
CONCLUSIONS:
These results imply that the mediumship process itself may not responsible for the increased health issues in this population. We propose an alternative model addressing the relationship between childhood trauma and physical illness.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A qualitative study of Western practitioners of Buddhist meditation investigated unexpected, challenging, difficult, and distressing experiences. This paper reports on a subset of 12 practitioners within Tibetan Vajrayana lineages who described energy flowing through their body, knots of pain, pressure or tension, and/or concurrent emotional changes. In some cases, somatic changes were appraised as practice-related transient states, and in other cases practitioners were given a Tibetan medical diagnosis of rlung disorder. Releases of tension in the body or subtle body also sometimes coincided with an upwelling of emotionally charged content. Practitioners reported emotional upwelling during subtle body practices as well as during other Vajrayana practices, such as visualizations. While some practitioners viewed these experiences in relation to a normative Tantric soteriology of purification, almost all practitioners with a trauma history reported traumatic re-experiencing and tended not to adopt a purification framework. These practitioners were also more likely to seek additional psychotherapeutic or medical treatment to help resolve their practice-related challenges. The manner in which somatic and affective experiences manifest, how they are appraised, and how they affect the practitioner’s ability to engage in the Vajrayana path depends upon many individual, interpersonal, and cultural factors.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Buddhist-derived contemplative practices, such as mindfulness meditation, are simultaneously being recommended as well as contra-indicated for individuals with a history of trauma. Case reports and controlled studies have documented that trauma-related experiences, such as intrusive memories (flashbacks) and dissociation can be successfully treated with or triggered by Buddhist-derived meditation practices. By drawing on the current neuroscientific models of both meditation and post-traumatic stress disorder, this talk will explore under what conditions contemplative practices may ameliorate or exacerbate traumatic symptomatology. The talk will focus on the balance between sensory (body) verses contextual autobiographical (narrative) processing, and why body focus (interoception) in particular may play a key role in traumatic memory formation and maintenance as well as healing. Factors that impact different dimensions of self-experience, including (verbal) narrativisation, temporal continuity, (dis)- identification, ownership, agency, vantage perspective, and movement also may play a role. Finally, the potential role of cultural differences in self-construal and response to trauma will be explored.

A qualitative study of Western practitioners of Buddhist meditation (n=60) contained a subset of practitioners within Tibetan Vajrayana lineages (n=12; 6 female, 6 male). Practitioners engaged in a variety of practices associated with Tantric Buddhism, including preliminary practices (prostrations, mantra recitations, and visualizations), deity yoga, and subtle body yogas. This paper focuses on somatic and affective changes. Practitioners report being affected by energy flowing through their body, knots of pain, pressure or tension, and concurrent cognitive or affective changes. For many practitioners, when tension in the body or subtle body releases, there is a concurrent upwelling of emotionally charged content or traumatic memories. Practitioners reported emotional upwelling or re-experiencing of trauma during various Vajrayana practices, including preliminaries, generation stage, and completion stage. How these somatic and affective experiences manifest, how they are appraised, and how they affect the practitioner’s ability to engage in Tantra depends upon many individual and interpersonal factors. Comparisons beyond Tantra to the related—but ofthen conflicting—systems of the body in Tibetan medicine provide additional information on how Tibetan Buddhists navigate challenging somatic experiences. Considering the application of Tibetan medicine in the modern period also calls attention to the challenges of applying Western conceptions of and responses to “trauma” in different cultural contexts.

Mindfulness-based interventions are an increasingly popular approach to treating affective disturbances, and a current goal of the field is to identify factors that moderate treatment response. Childhood trauma is a moderator of interest, since history of early trauma has been shown to negatively impact acute depression treatment outcomes for other forms of treatment, and results from recent studies investigating childhood maltreatment as a mindfulness-based treatment moderator have been mixed. In a clinical trial of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for acute depression (N=91), childhood trauma predicted worse treatment outcomes as measured by depression change scores (r = .207, p = .049) as well as by meditation-related adverse effects (r = .227, p = .027). Participants who reported any childhood sexual abuse (n = 17) or severe childhood emotional neglect (n = 13) exhibited less of a decrease of depression symptoms post-treatment compared to participants reporting no sexual abuse or non-severe emotional neglect, respectively (t(89) = 2.28, p = .025), (t(89) = 2.87, p = .005). These data have significant clinical implications, highlighting the need for trauma-sensitive modifications to standard mindfulness-based treatments.

There is a lack of research examining the mental health of practicing mediums, yet the nature of mediumship work inherently presents a number of challenges to the mental health of practitioners. In this study, we aimed to gain an understanding of how mediums experience their mental health in relation to their mediumistic practice and how they recognise and respond to psychological difficulties experienced by their clients. Fourteen mediums from the North West of England took part in one-to-one interviews, which were transcribed and subject to interpretative phenomenological analysis. Four themes were identified: from past traumas to mediumistic identity; spirit makes sense, mental illness is chaos; being resilient but vulnerable; and ethical mediumistic practice. The research highlights the value of not dismissing or attempting to change appraisals of valued aspects of mediums’ anomalous experiences. However, the findings do indicate that support for exposure to clients’ difficulties might be helpful.

Background
The Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) is the gold standard to assess severely brain-injured patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness (DoC). However, the amount of time needed to complete this examination may limit its use in clinical settings. Objective. We aimed to validate a new faster tool to assess consciousness in individuals with DoC.
Methods
This prospective validation study introduces the Simplified Evaluation of CONsciousness Disorders (SECONDs), a tool composed of 8 items: arousal, localization to pain, visual fixation, visual pursuit, oriented behaviors, command-following, and communication (both intentional and functional). A total of 57 individuals with DoC were assessed on 2 consecutive days by 3 blinded examiners: one CRS-R and one SECONDs were performed on 1 day, whereas 2 SECONDs were performed on the other day. A Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the duration of administration of the SECONDs versus the CRS-R, and weighted Fleiss’ kappa coefficients were used to assess inter-/intra-rater reliability as well as concurrent validity.
Results
In the 57 participants, the SECONDs was about 2.5 times faster to administer than the CRS-R. The comparison of the CRS-R versus the SECONDs on the same day or the best of the 3 SECONDs led to “substantial” or “almost perfect” agreement (kappa coefficients ranging from 0.78 to 0.85). Intra-/inter-rater reliability also showed almost perfect agreement (kappa coefficients from 0.85 to 0.91 and 0.82 to 0.85, respectively).
Conclusions
The SECONDs appears to be a fast, reliable and easy-to-use scale to diagnose DoC and may be a good alternative to other scales in clinical settings where time constraints preclude a more thorough assessment.

Autobiographical memory (AM) is linked to the construct of self, which is influenced by mindfulness training. Furthermore, both self-reference and AM can be affected by psychopathological conditions, such as depression. This article offers a critical review with a systematic search of the studies using different paradigms to investigate the effects of mindfulness training on AM, as well as the relationships between trait mindfulness and AM.
Methods
The review includes studies with behavioral, self-report, and neuroimaging methods by considering both non-clinical and clinical investigations in an integrative perspective. Fifty articles were reviewed. The review addressed the following main fields: mindfulness and autobiographical memory specificity; mindfulness and emotional autobiographical recall; and self-inquiry into negative autobiographical narratives and mindfulness. An additional section analyzed 18 studies that addressed the effects of mindfulness training on memory flashbacks.
Results
In line with the hypotheses, grounded on theories of AM, self, conscious processing, memory reconsolidation, and Buddhist psychology, the review results suggest that the influences of mindfulness training and trait mindfulness on AM can be related to enhanced cognitive, emotional, and self-referential flexibility. This influence is also associated with improved meta-awareness, acceptance, and the flexibility to shift from a first- to a third-person self-perspective in AM recall. In particular, the review highlights increased self-referential flexibility related to mindfulness, which during AM recall would enable a more balanced retrieval of episodic, semantic, and emotional contents, as well as increased AM specificity and reduced emotional reactivity. A mindfulness-related reconsolidation of the links between AM traces and the self might play a crucial role. The mindfulness-related changes of the experiences during AM recall may be translated into long-term reconsolidation-related changes in the AM traces, with a potential interactive effect on the self, thus becoming more flexible. The review also highlights brain mechanisms underlying these influences, given by changes in activity and functional connectivity of core regions in the default mode network (medial prefrontal cortex and posterior cingulate cortex), salience network (anterior cingulate cortex and anterior insula), and central executive network (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex). Finally, we suggest new research developments from the review and the related theoretical perspective.
Conclusion
The review results, together with the proposed theoretical accounts, bridge a set of investigations on several autobiographical memory phenomena and mindfulness, and might usefully lead to further studies, also with relevant clinical and cognitive neuroscience implications.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Hypnotic suggestibility in dissociative and related disorders: A meta-analysis

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Elevated responsiveness to verbal suggestions is hypothesized to represent a predisposing factor for the dissociative disorders (DDs) and related conditions. However, the magnitude of this effect has not been estimated in these populations nor has the potential moderating influence of methodological limitations on effect size variability across studies. This study assessed whether patients with DDs, trauma- and stressor-related disorders (TSDs), and functional neurological disorder (FND) display elevated hypnotic suggestibility. A systematic literature search identified 20 datasets. A random-effects meta-analysis revealed that patients displayed greater hypnotic suggestibility than controls, Hedges’s g = 0.92 [0.66, 1.18]. This effect was observed in all subgroups but was most pronounced in the DDs. Although there was some evidence for publication bias, a bias-corrected estimate of the group effect remained significant, g = 0.57 [0.30, 0.85]. Moderation analyses did not yield evidence for a link between effect sizes and methodological limitations. These results demonstrate that DDs and related conditions are characterized by elevated hypnotic suggestibility and have implications for the mechanisms, risk factors, and treatment of dissociative psychopathology.
