The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The possibility of a proactive role for consciousness in the establishment of physical reality has been addressed via an extensive 26-year program investigating physical anomalies in human/machine interactions and non-sensory acquisition of information about remote geographical locations. Empirical databases comprising many hundreds of millions of random events confirm that information can be introduced into, or extracted from, otherwise random physical processes solely through the agencies of human intention and subjective resonance. Much of the evidence mitigates the likelihood that the anomalies are manifestations of neo-cortical cognitive activity. Rather, they may be expressions of a deeper information organizing capacity of biological origin that emerges from the uncertainty inherent in the complexity of all living systems.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Neurobiological mechanisms of decision-making have been shown to be modulated by a number of frontal brain regions. Among those areas, the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is thought to play an important role in the decision of behavioral actions when faced with alternative options of ambiguous outcome. Here we present a novel neurobehavioral task to study affective decision-making in the rat, based on evaluation of consecutive choices between two levers associated with rewards of different value and probability. Two groups of animals were studied; a sham control group (n=6) and an OFC-lesioned group (n=7). In the first 30 trials both groups had similar preference patterns but at the end of the 90 trials of the task both groups developed specific preferences. The control group systematically preferred the lever associated with smaller but more reliable rewards (low risk lever) while the OFC lesion group preferred the high risk lever (index of preference of 0.21±0.21 vs. -0.45±0.10; t-test, P<0.05). Analysis of choice persistence (i.e. choosing the same lever in consecutive trials) suggests that the OFC-lesioned group became less sensitive to risk, seeking large rewards irrespective of their success probability.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Forced choice between alternative options of unpredictable outcome is a complex task that requires continual update of the value associated with each option. Prefrontal areas such as the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) have been shown to play a major role in performance on ambiguous decision-making tasks with substantial risk component, broadly named as “gambling tasks.” We have recently demonstrated that rats display complex decision-making behavior in a rodent gambling task based on serial choices between rewards of different value and probability. This rodent task retains many of the key characteristics of the human Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), and performance in this novel task is also disrupted by OFC or amygdalar lesioning. In the present study we addressed if rat models of chronic pain would have impaired performance in this gambling task, since it is already known that the IGT response patterns of human pain patients are comparable to individuals with OFC lesions. We found that animals with a monoarthritic inflammatory model of chronic pain systematically preferred the lever associated with larger but infrequent rewards. In addition, we measured the neurochemical content of the OFC, amygdala and nucleus accumbens using HPLC, and found that in prolonged chronic pain animals there was a decrease in the tonic levels of dopamine, DOPAC (3,4-hydroxyphenyl-acetic acid) and 5-HIAA (5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid) in the OFC. This is the first report of the effect of chronic pain in rat decision-making processes and supports the notion that pain may have profound effects on the functioning of the reward-aversion circuitry relevant to strategic planning.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
I am pleased to report a number of successes on the research stemming from this bursary, all on the general theme of quantifying uncertainty and risky decision-making across domains. We have now measured such behavior for conscious and unconscious perception in tasks ranging from intuitive physics in infants and adults, binocular rivalry, and early visual processing. Moreover, we developed a method to discover the structure of neural representations and applied it to visual cognition. This report is structured by the papers that have stemmed in part from this bursary.
[1] We investigated how people forage in an uncertain environment, and found that visual search follows optimal foraging informed by the distribution of the number of targets across displays. This indicates that people learn target distributions from the environment, and integrate this learning with uncertain, sparse measurements of the richness of a given scene, to yield near- optimal foraging behavior.
[2] Here we investigated pure reasoning about physically constrained objects in infants. We showed that a simple kinematic model can account for infants’ surprisal in a number of classic, and new, experiments measuring how infants perceive objects. This suggests that even as infants, humans can reason about physical scenarios and can combine uncertainty about object locations and motion, along with constraints from base rates.
[3] Here we asked whether bistability in the visual system during binocular rivalry might reflect optimal inference given uncertainty about the latent causes of visual input. We showed that Gibbs (or Markov chain Monte Carlo) inference in a model that captures the structured dependencies of the visual world yields both the global switching dynamics, as well as the local transition dynamics, of binocular rivalry.
[4] Here we asked whether uncertainty about the timing of rapid sequences of events is combined with expectations about the temporal structure of the world – we find that such an account can explain a number of RSVP perception phenomena, including repetition blindness, the attentional blink, and patterns of errors in those tasks.
[5] Here we proposed an overarching agenda for combining uncertain reasoning with cognitive constraints to yield rational process models. We propose that by considering optimal engineering solutions to implementing inference under uncertainty, we may develop process models of human reasoning.
[6] This is the culmination of many strands of research in which we devised methods to discover the structure of visual representations in the human brain. We applied our data driven ‘functional clustering’ to fMRI data to show that we can find which objects are seem to be subserved by similar neural substrates, and to identify neural substrates that seem to have sufficiently homogenous function. This hypothesis-neutral method of discovering functional neural architecture yields strong evidence for the face, place, and body areas, and opens the possibility for discovering new functional regions in the brain.
[7] Here we measured uncertainty in the mapping function between visually presented magnitudes, and self-reported numerical estimates. We find that mapping of magnitudes onto numbers reveals a bilinear function that highlights two regimes of (mis)calibration: small magnitudes are mapped veridically, with considerable stability. However, larger magnitudes (above about 15) are systematically mismapped, and show slow drift over time. We believe this slow drifting mismapping reflects a process of MCMC learning of the uncertain mapping from magnitudes onto our verbal number line.
[8] In this work we measured the sources of uncertainty in human physical reasoning, particularly in the domain of reasoning about physical objects undergoing simple 2D motion. We find that most of the uncertainty in these cases arises from stochastic dynamics: meaning that our forward physical models are not deterministic, but are themselves uncertain. Moreover, this physical uncertainty propagates non-linearly, and yields stable patterns of bias and error in human judgments and decisions.
[9] Here we measured uncertainty and the dynamics of verbal problem solving in a semantic remote associates test. We find that people search through their semantic space via a partially-guided random-walk, consistent with a MCMC chain exploring the semantic space weighted by the constraints of the cues.

Recent work suggests that people predict how objects interact in a manner consistent with Newtonian physics, but with additional uncertainty. However, the sources of uncertainty have not been examined. In this study, we measure perceptual noise in initial conditions and stochasticity in the physical model used to make predictions. Participants predicted the trajectory of a moving object through occluded motion and bounces, and we compared their behavior to an ideal observer model. We found that human judgments cannot be captured by simple heuristics and must incorporate noisy dynamics. Moreover, these judgments are biased consistently with a prior expectation on object destinations, suggesting that people use simple expectations about outcomes to compensate for uncertainty about their physical models.

A current challenge in cognitive neuroscience is to provide an explicit separation of the neural correlates of abstract global decision variables from sensory and integrative ones. In particular, the insular cortex and the adjacent frontal operculum seem to have a crucial but still unclear role in evidence accumulation and decision signaling in perceptual decision-making tasks. Here, we have used a visual decision-making paradigm based on the detection of ambiguous two-tone (Mooney) face stimuli to assess the emergence of holistic percepts. These are constructed using global gestalt rules and not by gradual spatiotemporal increases in sensory evidence. Our paradigm (neurochronometric approach) enabled the experimental separation between multiple cognitive components in perceptual decision validated by both model-driven and data-driven analysis. This strategy allowed for the functional dissection of operculo-insular networks into task related complexes such as anterior (accumulator), middle (decision) and posterior (somatosensory/sensorimotor). We conclude that global perceptual integration based on holistic rules requires a distributed operculo-insular network.

Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is one of the most widely used tools to assess economic decision-making. However, the research tradition on aging and the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) has been mainly focused on the overall performance of older adults in relation to younger or clinical groups, remaining unclear whether older adults are capable of learning along the task. We conducted a meta-analysis to examine older adults' decision-making on the IGT, to test the effects of aging on reversal learning (45 studies) and to provide normative data on total and block net scores (55 studies). From the accumulated empirical evidence, we found an average total net score of 7.55 (±25.9). We also observed a significant reversal learning effect along the blocks of the IGT, indicating that older adults inhibit the prepotent response toward immediately attractive options associated with high losses, in favor of initially less attractive options associated with long-run profit. During block 1, decisions of older adults led to a negative gambling net score, reflecting the expected initial pattern of risk-taking. However, the shift toward more safe options occurred between block 2 (small-to-medium effect size) and blocks 3, 4, 5 (medium-to-large effect size). These main findings highlight that older adults are able to move from the initial uncertainty, when the possible outcomes are unknown, to decisions based on risk, when the outcomes are learned and may be used to guide future adaptive decision-making.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
