Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The feeling of being stared from behind is well known all over the world, and most people claim to have experienced it themselves. There have been surprisingly few empirical investigations of this phenomenon. I describe a simple experimental procedure with subjects and lookers working in pairs. In a random sequence of trials, the looker either looked at the back of the subject, or looked away and thought of something else. Such experiments showed a very significant excess of correct over incorrect guesses. When subjects were being looked at, they guessed correctly about 60% of the time, whereas in control trials, when they were not being looked at, their guesses were close to the chance level of 50%. The same pattern of results was found in my own experiments with adult subjects, with two different procedures: in experiments conducted in schools in Connecticut, USA: in experiments conducted by volunteers all around the world; and in a previous series of experiments in schools in Germany and the USA. All these sets of data showed a highly significant effect. Taken together they showed that in looking trials, 427 people were more often right than wrong, as opposed to 157 who were more often wrong than right. This difference is extremely significant (p<1x10-25). In the control trials, there was no significant difference between the number of people who were more often right than wrong (294) and more often wrong than right (287). These results suggest that the feeling of being looked at from behind is a real phenomenon that depends on factors as yet unknown to science. Non-human animals may also share this kind of sensitivity, which may be of evolutionary significance in the relationships between predators and prey.

Cortical synchronization as a neural basis for visual perception
Publication year: 2007
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
Cortical synchronization has been suggested as a neural mechanism that is able to solve the feature binding problem. This idea has been intensively studied at neurophysiological, psychophysical and computational level. In this paper, arguments for and against the role of cortical synchronization in visual perception are critically examined. Initial neurophysiological findings of correlated neural activity in the primary visual cortex have been questioned by studies which reveal enhanced firing rate to the figure region compared to the background. Computational investigations reveal that synchronization has capacity limit. At the behavioural level, change blindness has been used as the evidence for capacity limit of visual perception. However, further examination of this issue showed that detailed visual representation exists but it is obscured by limitation of attention and visual working memory. Other behavioural phenomena, such as perceptual asynchrony, also point to the fact that there is dissociation between correlated neural activity and perception. Therefore, at present there is no sufficient evidence to support the conclusion that cortical synchronization plays a crucial role in visual perception.

Temporal integration of 3D coherent motion cues defining visual objects of unknown orientation is impaired in amnestic mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The nature of visual impairments in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and their relation with other cognitive deficits remains highly debated. We asked whether independent visual deficits are present in AD and amnestic forms of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in the absence of other comorbidities by performing a hierarchical analysis of low-level and high-level visual function in MCI and AD. Since parietal structures are a frequent pathophysiological target in AD and subserve 3D vision driven by motion cues, we hypothesized that the parietal visual dorsal stream function is predominantly affected in these conditions. We used a novel 3D task combining three critical variables to challenge parietal function: 3D motion coherence of objects of unknown orientation, with constrained temporal integration of these cues. Groups of amnestic MCI (n = 20), AD (n = 19), and matched controls (n = 20) were studied. Low-level visual function was assessed using psychophysical contrast sensitivity tests probing the magnocellular, parvocellular, and koniocellular pathways. We probed visual ventral stream function using the Benton Face Recognition task. We have found hierarchical visual impairment in AD, independently of neuropsychological deficits, in particular in the novel parietal 3D task, which was selectively affected in MCI. Integration of local motion cues into 3D objects was specifically and most strongly impaired in AD and MCI, especially when 3D motion was unpredictable, with variable orientation and short-lived in space and time. In sum, specific early dorsal stream visual impairment occurs independently of ventral stream, low-level visual and neuropsychological deficits, in amnestic types of MCI and AD.

Data-driven functional clustering reveals dominance of face, place, and body selectivity in the ventral visual pathway
Publication year: 2012

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22745467
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Regions selective for faces, places, and bodies feature prominently in the literature on the human ventral visual pathway. Are selectivities for these categories in fact the most robust response profiles in this pathway, or is their prominence an artifact of biased sampling of the hypothesis space in prior work? Here we use a data-driven structure discovery method that avoids the assumptions built into most prior work by 1) giving equal consideration to all possible response profiles over the conditions tested, 2) relaxing implicit anatomical constraints (that important functional profiles should manifest themselves in spatially contiguous voxels arising in similar locations across subjects), and 3) testing for dominant response profiles over images, rather than categories, thus enabling us to discover, rather than presume, the categories respected by the brain. Even with these assumptions relaxed, face, place, and body selectivity emerge as dominant in the ventral stream.

Impaired processing of 3D motion-defined faces in mild cognitive impairment and healthy aging: an fMRI study
Publication year: 2013

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which shows high risk for conversion to Alzheimer's disease (AD), is accompanied by progressive visual deteriorations that so far are poorly understood. Here, we compared dorsal and ventral visual stream functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) activity among amnestic MCI, healthy elderly, and young participants during structure-from-motion (SFM) face categorization performance. Task performance varied with stimulus depth and duration levels and differences among groups were highly correlated with face-related fMRI activation patterns. Young participants showed larger activation to faces than scrambled faces (face sensitivity) in the right fusiform face area (FFA) and right occipital face area (OFA) whereas in elderly, this difference was reduced. Surprisingly, in MCI, scrambled faces elicited larger activation in right FFA/OFA than faces. The latter observation may be related to the additional finding of elevated depth sensitivity in left FFA/OFA of MCI, suggesting that an increased representation of low-level stimulus aspects may impair face perception in MCI. Discriminant function analysis using face and depth sensitivity indices in FFA/OFA classified MCI and healthy elderly with 88.2% accuracy, marking a fundamental distinction between groups. Potentially related findings include altered activation patterns in dorsal-ventral stream integration regions and attention-related networks of MCI patients. Our results highlight aberrant visual and additional potentially compensatory processes that identify dispositions of (preclinical) AD.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

BIAL Foundation Archive
Start date: 1994
History:
The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Aim of the present project was to study and elucidate the neural mechanisms of blink and saccadic suppression by taking advantage of intracranial electrophysiology. We found a characteristic biphasic broadband gamma decrease-increase pattern over early visual areas, during both blinks and saccades.
A high-frequency spectral magnitude decrease and low-frequency magnitude increase during blinking was also recorded over parietal cortex, temporal cortex and particularly robust over prefrontal cortex. The high-frequency spectral magnitude decrease and low-frequency magnitude increase recorded during eye movement execution over early visual areas and prefrontal cortex likely reflects neural correlates of a top-down signal associated with visual suppression. Furthermore, we found a significant saccade-related decrease in the gamma band of V1 approx. 40 ms prior to saccade onset, i.e., in a time window that was completely non-overlapping with saccade onset. This result supports the hypothesis, because a bottom-up mechanism could not yet function at that time.
Saccades more than blinks however elicited a late, narrower-banded gamma response over early visual areas that may reflect the processing of new visual input after saccadic movement to a new eye position. A comparable pattern with a phasic broadband gamma augmentation followed by a more narrow-banded sustained gamma response was previously found in the primate visual cortex during visual stimulation with Gabor stimuli.
We conclude that early visual areas, including striate- and extra-striate cortices, as well as areas of higher visual processing are involved in the processing of visual awareness.
