The hypothesis that water “treated” with intention can affect ice crystals formed from that water was pilot tested under double-blind conditions. A group of approximately 2,000 people in Tokyo focused positive intentions toward water samples located inside an electromagnetically shielded room in California. That group was unaware of similar water samples set aside in a different location as controls. Ice crystals formed from both sets of water samples were blindly identified and photographed by an analyst, and the resulting images were blindly assessed for aesthetic appeal by 100 independent judges. Results indicated that crystals from the treated water were given higher scores for aesthetic appeal than those from the control water (P = .001, one-tailed), lending support to the hypothesis.

Effects of intentionally treated water on the growth of mesenchymal stem cells: An exploratory study

Objective
This study explored if human primary mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), derived from two donors and cultivated in a medium made with intentionally treated water, would exhibit more growth and pluripotency than MSCs from the same source but grown in untreated (control) water.
Design
To create the treated water, three Buddhist monks directed their attention toward commercially bottled water while holding the intention that the water would enhance the growth of MSCs. Under double-blind conditions, cell culture growth mediums were prepared with the treated and untreated water, which was in turn used to grow the primary MSCs. Primary cells obtained from two donors were designated as Cells #1 and Cells #2. The prediction was that treated water would result in increased cell proliferation, that more cells would enter the cell cycle growth phase, and that there would be increased expression of genes (NANOG, OCT4 and SOX2) associated with improved cell growth and decreased expression of genes (p16, p21, and p53) associated with a decline in cell growth. The improved growth hypothesis was directional, thus one-tailed p-values were used to evaluate the results.
Results
Proliferation averaged across Cells #1 and #2 showed overall increased growth in treated as compared to control water (p = 0.0008). Cells #1 and #2 considered separately had differences in the same direction but only Cells #2 showed a significant difference on day 6 (p = 0.01). For cell cycle, there was a significantly greater percentage of Cells #2 in the S interphase with treated vs. control water (p = 0.04). For the gene expression analysis, when considering the average across the two donor cells, only the NANOG gene expression was in the predicted direction (p = 0.01); by contrast, the p16 gene expression was significantly opposite to the predicted direction (p = 0.005, one-tailed, post-hoc). For Cells #1 considered separately, no differences were significant except for p16, which resulted in an effect opposite to the predicted outcome (p = 0.05). For Cells #2, three genes were significantly in the predicted directions: NANOG (p = 0.0008), OCT4 (p = 0.005), and P53 (p = 0.05); p16 was significantly opposite to the prediction (p = 0.001).
Conclusion
Intentionally treated water appeared to have some biological effects on the growth, pluripotency and senescence of human MSCs. This was especially the case in one of the two donor cells tested, but the effects were not consistently in the predicted direction. As an exploratory study, caution is warranted in interpreting these outcomes, and adjustment for multiple testing would likely reduce some of the weaker effects to nonsignificant. But given the double-blind protocol, as well as several more significant outcomes in the predicted directions, further research is warranted.

Objective
This study investigated if human glioblastoma cancer cells (U87MG cell line) cultured in intentionally treated water could reduce cell migration, a prerequisite for metastasis, as compared to the same cells cultured in untreated (control) water.
Design
Three Buddhist monks entered a meditative state and directed their awareness to bottles of ultrapure water while holding the intention that the water would cause beneficial changes in U87MG. The study was conducted double-blind whereby all aspects of the study involving cell growth and migration measures, as well as all subsequent statistical evaluations, were performed without knowledge of the type of water being used. Cell cultures were incubated in growth mediums prepared with treated and untreated water, and a wound healing assay was employed to measure cell migration.
Results
U87MG cells incubated with treated water migrated less efficiently than the same cells in untreated water. A repeated measures ANOVA, spanning four time periods (0, 3, 6, and 9 h), determined that the time × water condition interaction was associated with p < 0.005.
Conclusion
Intentioned awareness appeared to change as-yet unknown properties of ultrapure water, resulting in a reduction of U87MG cells migration activity. Further research is warranted to replicate these results and to investigate the underlying protein expression mechanisms in influencing cell migration.

A preliminary independent replication was conducted using a magnetic field stimulation technique claimed to evoke “excess correlations” in the dynamic behavior of any two objects exposed to the same fields. The objects in this experiment were beakers of water separated by distances of one, six, or ten meters. Acetic acid was added to water in a “local” beaker while pH was simultaneously measured in a “remote” beaker in which nothing was added. Control tests involved either not adding acid to the local beaker in some runs, or by using a third beaker that was not exposed to the magnetic field. The prediction was that the remote beaker’s pH would shift toward alkaline during a specific phase of the magnetic field stimulation, as compared to the same measure in control conditions. Based on a linear mixed-effects analysis and a bias-corrected and accelerated nonparametric bootstrap procedure applied to 50 experimental and control runs a statistically significant (p < 0.0005) but small magnitude pH shift (+0.004) toward alkalinity was observed in the remote beaker during the predicted stimulation phase, supporting previously published claims.

Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Objectives
Building on a previously reported finding that intention-treated water reduced human glioblastoma cell migration, this study had two aims: to replicate the earlier observation using a more physiologically precise migration assay, and to identify candidate molecular mechanisms by profiling key migration-regulatory proteins.
Design
In a double-blind, controlled protocol, a single batch of ultrapure water was exposed to focused mental intention by four Buddhist monks; a paired control batch received no treatment. U-87MG glioblastoma cells were cultured in media prepared from either the intention-treated or control water. Cell migration was quantified using a Transwell assay across three technical replicates, and the expression of eleven migration-regulatory proteins was assessed by Western blot across three replicates from the same water batches.
Results
Across all three assay runs, cells cultured in intention-treated media consistently exhibited reduced migration relative to controls (p < 0.002, one-sample t-test against normalized control mean). Western blot analysis showed consistent downregulation of VASP and RhoB across runs (p < 0.004 and p < 0.0003, respectively, after correction for multiple analyses), with eight additional factors trending in the same direction.
Conclusion
Within a single double-blind treatment occasion, intention-treated water was associated with a reproducible reduction in glioblastoma cell migration and consistent suppression of the actin cytoskeletal regulatory axis. This study involved repeated testing of a single batch of treated vs. control water, rather than repeatedly testing the intentional treatments. Future studies using independently treated water batches will be required before claims about the generality of the intentional effect can be made.
