Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Questionnaires were developed to investigate the effects that paranormal and paranormal/spiritual experiences have on peoples' lives. Data from a convenience sample of 67 people actively interested in parapsychology who reported having had at least one paranormal and/or transcendent experience showed that these experiences increased their interest and beliefs in spiritual matters and increased their sense of well-being. More specifically, the majority of respondents indicated that the experiences resulted in increased belief in life after death, belief that their lives are guided or watched over by a higher force or being, interest in spiritual or religious matters, sense of connection to others, happiness, well-being, confidence, optimism about the future, and meaning in life. They also indicated decreases in fear of death, depression or anxiety, isolation and loneliness, and worry and fears about the
future. A large majority of respondents indicated that these effects resulted from a combination of more than one paranormal and/or transcendent experience. The magnitude of changes in well-being and spirituality were positively associated with the number of anomalous experiences. Measures of current well-being and current importance of spirituality were positively associated with reported changes in well-being and spirituality resulting from anomalous experiences. Although 45% of the respondents indicated that a paranormal experience had made them very afraid, this fear appeared to be temporary or mixed with positive feeling because only 9% indicated that their experiences have been scary with no positive value. Further research should investigate the extent to which the findings from this selected sample apply to other populations and the extent to which motivations relating to spirituality direct or underlie the occurrence of paranormal phenomena, including in experimental settings.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Well-being was associated with attachment style: securely attached people exhibited better well-being. However neither well-being nor attachment style were associated with the cortisol awakening response (CAR), the cortisol diurnal decline or mean levels of cortisol across the day in a population of healthy young females. These findings led us to explore age-related effects using hair measures of cortisol.
Hair cortisol (HC) provides a retrospective trait measure of cortisol secretion. Again there was no association between HC and well-being in young healthy females. The older females had higher HC than the healthy young, which is interpreted as a consequence of aging. Surprisingly we found that older females with higher HC had higher levels of well-being. This finding suggests that cortisol acts as an ‘energiser’ in healthy older females. Together these results question the validity of cortisol as a useful biomarker in the healthy young. It also provides evidence for the neurotoxicity hypothesis of cortisol secretion: well-being did not relate to cortisol secretion in early adulthood with effects emerging in late adulthood.
A subsidiary methodological finding from the study was that previously considered ‘safe’ saliva sampling delays of around 8 min between awakening and the start of sampling resulted in erroneous over-estimated CAR magnitude and earlier CAR peak timing. Five min saliva sampling in the post-awakening period suggested this was a consequence of a 10 min time lag between awakening and the start of the cortisol rise (previously considered to be linear). In contrast, non-adherence 3-12 hours post-awakening did not impact on diurnal cortisol measures. This can usefully inform future CAR studies.

The relationship between trait and state well-being and attachment style in students
Publication year: 2012

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Previous research has found that individuals with insecure attachment styles have lower levels of well-being. However, well-being has been measured mostly in terms of ill-being (e.g. depression, anxiety, loneliness). Less focus has been on the eudemonic (e.g. a meaningful life) and hedonic (e.g. happiness and life satisfaction) aspects of wellbeing in relation to attachment style. Students (N=240) completed an online questionnaire that consisted of standardized questionnaires on trait eudemonic and hedonic well-being and ill-being and the vulnerable attachment style questionnaire. In line with the Ecological Momentary Assessment method a sub sample of 50 students rated their mood (how happy, pleased, goal directed, stressed, down, frustrated and in control they felt) over four days at five random times throughout each day to assess state well-being and ill-being. The trait well-being and ill-being measures loaded strongly onto one factor, whereas the 4- day average state well-being and ill-being loaded onto separate factors.
There was a significant difference in trait well-being between attachment style groups, F (2, 223) = 22.010, p<.001, ?2 =.165,
whereby securely attached students exhibited greater well-being than both the insecure anxious (p<.000) and insecure avoidant (p<.005) groups. There was also a significant difference in average state wellbeing between the attachment style groups F (2, 44) = 4.859, p>.005, ?2 =.181. Significant differences in state well-being were found between the secure and insecure anxious (but not avoidant) attachment style groups; the anxious group exhibited lower well-being than those who were securely attached (p = .018). There were no significant differences in average state ill-being between the attachment style groups. The results show that those with a secure attachment style presented with the highest levels of both trait and state well-being. The results also indicate that attachment style may be more closely associated with state well-being than ill-being. Furthermore, this study highlights the importance of measuring both trait and state well-being.

Trait hedonic and eudemonic Well-being and diurnal cortisol patterns
Publication year: 2013
URL:
http://www.psychosomatic.org/anmeeting/PDF/2013abstractBooklet.pdf
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The field of Positive Psychology has generated interest into the beneficial health outcomes of trait well-being. Two strands of wellbeing are documented: hedonia, which refers to pleasure and satisfaction in life and eudaimonia which refers more to meaning and fulfilment in life. Debate exists within the literature over the relative independence and importance of these two strands of well-being for health. Although well-being has been related to cortisol secretion studies have mostly been in middle-aged and older populations and have focused on hedonic, largely ignoring eudemonic, aspects of wellbeing. This study aimed to explore the independence of hedonic and eudemonic well-being and examine relationships with cortisol secretion in a young healthy female sample. Participants (n=50; mean age 21 years) completed measures of trait hedonic well-being (e.g. subjective happiness and life satisfaction), trait eudemonic well-being (e.g. psychological well-being) and ill-being (e.g. perceived stress and depression). Over four study days’ participants collected saliva samples at 0, 15, 30 and 45 min postawakening to measure the cortisol awakening response, and again at 3 and 12 hr post-awakening to measure the diurnal decline. Objective measures of awakening and adherence to the saliva sampling protocol were taken to encourage and monitor adherence to the protocol. Factor analyses of a larger population from which this sample was taken (n=240; mean age 21 years) showed that there were two components of well-being which were interpreted as hedonic well-being and eudemonic ill-being. Non-adherent saliva samples were excluded; well-being or ill-being was not related to the cortisol awakening response or the diurnal decline. We conclude that in a study carefully controlled for adherence to protocol in healthy young females neither hedonic well-being nor eudemonic ill-being was related to patterns of cortisol secretion. Relationships between trait well-being and cortisol secretion may emerge in later life as a consequence of neurotoxicity across the lifespan.

State Well-being or Ill-being does not predict cortisol patterns in a young healthy sample
Publication year: 2013
URL:
http://www.psychosomatic.org/anmeeting/PDF/2013abstractBooklet.pdf
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Many studies have explored the relationship between cortisol secretion and state well-being or ill-being; however, results are inconsistent. This may be explained to some extent by participant non-adherence to the saliva sampling protocol particularly for studies investigating the cortisol awakening response (CAR) as delays (> 5 min) in collecting the first saliva sample lead to misleading measurements of the CAR. Another factor may be the age group of the participants. Consistent associations are found in middle-aged and older populations, whereas relatively weak relationships tend to be found in younger individuals. This study aimed to objectively monitor adherence to the saliva sampling protocol and investigate the relationship between well-being and the CAR and cortisol over the day in a young healthy female sample.
50 healthy female students collected saliva samples on four days at 0, 15, 30, and 45 minutes, 3 and 12 hours post-awakening. State wellbeing and ill-being was assessed by mood ratings throughout each sampling day. Participants rated the extent to which they felt pleased, happy, goal-directed, stressed, out of control, frustrated, and down using electronic devices. Participants were made aware that awakening and sampling times were objectively monitored.
Participants were relatively adherent to the saliva sampling protocol, delays of < 5 min (mean: 1±1 min) was achieved on the majority of sampling days (N=80). Days with delays of over 5 minutes (mean: 13±12 min) were excluded (N=73) from analyses involving the CAR. Mixed modelling showed there was no relationship between well-being or ill-being and the CAR, the diurnal decline and cortisol over the day.
The lack of an association between well-being or ill-being and cortisol on days where saliva samples were collected accurately supports the neurotoxicity hypothesis of HPA axis dysregulation. In young healthy individuals the HPA-axis is resilient and thus associations between well-being or ill-being and cortisol will be absent or weak. We would hypothesise that these associations would be stronger in participants with vulnerability as a result of early life stress (not measured in this study) and in older adults.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Yoga and meditation have been shown to be effective in alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety in healthy volunteers and psychiatric populations. Recent work has also indicated that yoga can improve cognitive-behavioural performance and control. Although there have been no controlled studies of the effects of yoga in a prison population, we reasoned that yoga could have beneficial effects in a setting where psychosocial functioning is often low, and the frequency of impulsive behaviours is high.
Participants were recruited from 7 British prisons, and randomly allocated to either a 10-week yoga programme (yoga group; 1 class per week; N=45) or a control group (N=55). Self-report measures of mood, stress, and psychological distress were collected before and after the intervention period. Participants completed a cognitive-behavioural task (Go/No-Go) at the end of the study, which assessed behavioural response inhibition and sustained attention.
Participants in the yoga group showed increased self-reported positive affect, and reduced stress and psychological distress, compared to participants in the control group. Participants who completed the yoga course also showed better performance in the cognitive-behavioural task, making significantly fewer errors of omission in Go trials and fewer errors of commission on No-Go trials, compared to control participants.
Yoga may be effective in improving subjective wellbeing, mental health, and executive functioning within prison populations. This is an important consideration given the consistently high rates of psychological morbidity in this group and the need for effective and economical intervention programmes.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The effects that have paranormal experiences in the life of the people were investigated. The results of a sample of 24 people actively interested in thinking new age and esoteric issues that reported having at least one paranormal experience were collected. Such experiences increased their interest in spiritual matters as well as the subjective sense of well-being. They also showed a decrease in fear of death, depression or anxiety, isolation and loneliness; concerns and fears about the future. A large majority of the respondents indicated that these effects were a combination of more than one spiritual, paranormal and transcendental experience. The magnitude of the changes in welfare and spirituality were positively associated with the number of anomalous experiences. Well-being scores and the importance of spirituality were positively associated with changes in welfare and spirituality which resulted from the anomalous experiences. Although 45% of respondents indicated that the paranormal experience had been frightening, this fear seemed to be temporary or mixed with positive feelings.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of yoga and breathing techniques on physiological and psychological well-being of long-term practitioners.
Main parameters measured were: psychological parameters encompassing general health status, satisfaction with life, quality of life, self-esteem, emotional status, anxiety, neuroticism, social distance, spirituality and religion tolerance, smoking and eating habits, and alcohol consumption; physiological parameters encompassing metabolic status, blood pressure and lung capacity.
This study showed that long-term practitioners exhibit less anxiety, higher level of positive and lower level of negative affect and higher level of emotional stability when compared with the control group. They expressed fewer limitations due to physical and emotional functioning, higher levels of energy, less bodily pain and better general health. Regarding social functioning and emotional well-being, long-term practitioners reported the ability to perform normal social activities without interference due to physical or emotional problems as well as peaceful, happy, and calm state of the mind. Increased self-esteem, satisfaction with life and tolerance were also measured.
Analysis of physiological data showed that long-term practice of Art of Living (AOL) techniques has beneficial effect on the physical health. Major indicators of pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases are within the healthy ranges or improved. Combined with development of healthy habits such as non-smoking and vegetarian-diet, this yogic program has a strong disease-preventive potential. Therefore investigated intervention could serve as an effective holistic approach for the prevention of the number of acute and chronic diseases.

Hair cortisol concentrations in relation to ill-being and well-being in healthy young and old females
Publication year: 2016
URL:
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0167876016300204
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Hair cortisol concentration (HCC) provides a retrospective measure of long-term (i.e. over a period of months) cortisol secretion and has been shown to be elevated in relation to chronic stress conditions. However associations in healthy participants with subjective ill-being are less clear and associations with well-being have not been explored. The current study examined HCC in relation to independent comprehensive measures of ill-being (stress, depression, anxiety) and well-being (subjective happiness, life satisfaction, psychological well-being) in healthy young and old females (mean ± SD: 19.5 ± 2.2 years and 78.6 ± 6.7 years respectively, total N = 115). The data supported evidence of increased total cortisol secretion with increased age. No association between ill-being and HCC was found in either the young or older group of participants. A positive association between HCC and well-being was found in the older participant group which was independent of ill-being and potential confounds. These findings do not support associations between HCC and ill-being in healthy young or old females. However the results suggest that HCC is able to distinguish levels of well-being in healthy older females.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT
Concern about children´s mental health is steadily increasing in Portuguese schools, making this the right time for its promotion. Positive education sustains that well-being should be taught through programs of social-emotional skills. Thus, mindfulness will take a privileged spot in education, with an increasing number of interventions based on this type of practice being directed at children, youth and teachers. Teachers are one of professionals most affected by stress and professional burnout, and since they are fundamental models for their pupils, there is a current need to provide them with social-emotional skills, that will promote their well-being, thus contributing to a positive classroom environment that will increase learning and improve the teacher-student relationship. This study aims to contribute towards this challenge, through the evaluation of the indirect impact that a program of social-emotional skills based on mindfulness practices for First Grade school teachers has on their students, namely on their positive and negative emotions and on their subjective well-being, while also considering gender differences. Adopting an experimental investigation model, students of the intervention group teachers (experimental group; N=441) were compared to students of a control group (N=141), using self-reports applied before and after the investigation. Significant differences were found between the experimental group students and those in the control group, regarding the decrease of negative emotions, while no significant difference were found for positive emotions or well-being, as reported by the students. Regarding gender differences, the results were significant for the male students, who showed a decrease in their negative emotions, when compared to the female students. Results are discussed in light of the contemporary literature on this subject, aiming to reflect on future investigation and intervention in this matter.

A survey exploring synesthetic experiences: Exceptional experiences, schizotypy, and psychological well-being

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT
We used an online survey to investigate the relations among synesthesia, schizotypy, exceptional experiences (ExEs), and well-being. Participants (N = 1,628 [listwise N = 767]; male = 619, female = 1,064) completed a Synesthesia Experience Questionnaire (SEQ), a general question about synesthetic experiences (Hartmann, 1991), the Anomalous Experience Subscale (AES) of the Anomalous Experience Inventory (Gallagher, Kumar, & Pekala, 1994), questions about parapsychological experiences, a multidimensional measure of schizotypy (Oxford-Liverpool Inventory for Feelings and Experiences Short [O-LIFE Short]; Mason, Linney, & Claridge, 2005), and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS; Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985). Cronbach’s alphas for these measures ranged from .63 to .90 in our data set. Approximately half (54.4%) of the sample reported 1 or more synesthetic experiences, although the rate was much lower for synesthesias experienced on a consistent basis (3.1%). The SEQ was highly internally reliable and correlated positively with the AES, number of parapsychological experiences, and unusual experiences, and negatively with introvertive anhedonia. The SEQ was not directly related to the SWLS. Unusual experiences and synesthesia were the strongest predictors of the AES and parapsychological experiences in multiple regression models. A cluster analysis of schizotypy found 4 clusters of schizotypy, including 1 cluster reflecting healthy schizotypy, 1 reflecting high schizotypy, 1 reflecting low schizotypy, and 1 reflecting negative schizotypy. We compared clusters in terms of the SWLS, ExEs, and the SEQ and found significant differences for all variables and higher scores for healthy compared with high schizotypy on all variables. We discuss the complex relations among synesthesia, schizotypy, and well-being.

Stress as the missing link between mindfulness, Sleep quality, and well-being: A cross-sectional study
Publication year: 2019

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12671-019-01255-y
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES
There is ample evidence that mindfulness contributes to psychological well-being. There is also evidence that mindfulness can improve sleep, and previous research has suggested that the positive effects of mindfulness on well-being may depend on its capacity to decrease sleep disturbances. However, it is possible that a third factor that is affected by mindfulness may in turn affect both sleep quality and well-being. Given the well-known protective effects of mindfulness on stress and the influence of stress on both sleep disturbance and well-being, stress represents a strong candidate for such a mediational role.
METHODS
We collected cross-sectional data on mindfulness, stress, sleep disturbance, and well-being in a sample of adults taken from the general population, and then we applied structural equation modeling to analyze the relationships between a set of latent variables.
RESULTS
Our results confirm that mindfulness is negatively related to stress and this effect fully mediates the positive relationship between mindfulness and both sleep quality and well-being. Furthermore, our results show that if the effect of stress is taken into account, sleep quality does not mediate the influence of mindfulness on well-being and in fact does not relate to well-being at all.
CONCLUSIONS
Our study points to the central role of stress reduction in explaining the beneficial effects of mindfulness on both behavioral and psychological variables.
