    • The Boolean operator AND between the terms is assumed by default. If you enter the words European Union in the search box, the system returns all records in which both words occur, regardless of their order.
    • When entering a set of words in quotes, e.g "european union", all records containing the literal term "European Union" will be retrieved.
  • Search by access fields (e.g. author, title, etc.):
    • To direct your search, choose the field in which you want to search the word or expression.
    • Search in the field assumes by default the expression in quotes, e.g. European union will retrieve all records containing the literal term "European Union"
  • To perform more complex searches, additional words or expressions may be added.
  • If you want to refine the search results, you can always access the link "search" in the upper left corner of the page of search results.
  • The search engine is not case sensitive. For example, the word congress has the same meaning that Congress or CONGRESS.
  • To truncate your search expression, use the $ character
  • You can filter the results of your search by a date or date range, filling the appropriate boxes.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
We examined neural activity related to modulation of skin conductance level (SCL), an index of sympathetic tone, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while subjects performed biofeedback arousal and relaxation tasks. Neural activity within the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) and the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) covaried with skin conductance level (SCL), irrespective of task. Activity within striate and extrastriate cortices, anterior cingulate and insular cortices, thalamus, hypothalamus and lateral regions of prefrontal cortex reflected the rate of change in electrodermal activity, highlighting areas supporting transient skin conductance responses (SCRs). Successful performance of either biofeedback task (where SCL changed in the intended direction) was associated with enhanced activity in mid-OFC. The findings point to a dissociation between neural systems controlling basal sympathetic tone (SCL) and transient skin conductance responses (SCRs). The level of activity in VMPFC has been related to a default mode of brain function and our findings provide a physiological account of this state, indicating that activity within VMPFC and OFC reflects a dynamic between exteroceptive and interoceptive deployment of attention.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Parapsychology is the scientific investigation of apparently paranormal mental phenomena (such as telepathy, i.e., "mind reading"), also known as psi. Despite widespread public belief in such phenomena and over 75 years of experimentation, there is no compelling evidence that psi exists. In the present study, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used in an effort to document the existence of psi. If psi exists, it occurs in the brain, and hence assessing the brain directly should be more sensitive than using indirect behavioral methods (as have been used previously). To increase sensitivity, this experiment was designed to produce positive results if telepathy, clairvoyance (i.e., direct sensing of remote events), or precognition (i.e., knowing future events) exist. Moreover, the study included biologically or emotionally-related participants (e.g., twins) and emotional stimuli in an effort to maximize experimental conditions that are purportedly conducive to psi. In spite of these characteristics of the study, psi stimuli and non-psi stimuli evoked indistinguishable neuronal responses – even though differences in stimulus arousal values of the same stimuli had the expected effects on patterns of brain activation. These findings are the strongest evidence yet obtained against the existence of paranormal mental phenomena.

We investigated functional reorganization mechanisms of the human medial temporal lobe (MTL) for episodic memory, in patients suffering from medial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) with hippocampal sclerosis (HS).
METHODS:
We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure brain activity changes during matched episodic encoding tasks of abstract words (Verbal) and line drawings (Visual), in patients with unilateral right MTLE undergoing presurgical evaluation and healthy controls.
RESULTS:
As expected, a significant interaction between material type and the side of MTL activity was present in the control group, with preferential involvement of the left hippocampus in verbal encoding and the right parahippocampal region in visual encoding. When compared with controls, right MTLE patients with intact performance activated a region in the left hippocampus more during visual encoding, which resulted in an interaction between group and hemisphere. Importantly, an effect of memory performance on visual encoding activity was observed in the patients, with greater engagement of the left MTL being associated with higher recognition scores. Interestingly, activity in the left MTL also depended on the epileptic seizure frequency, suggesting a role for this clinical parameter in the recruitment of contralateral regions.
DISCUSSION:
Taken together, these results indicate functional reorganization of the MTLs in right HS, through transfer of function from the right to the left hemisphere, and strongly suggest an adaptive role for such reorganization mechanism in supporting preserved visual memory.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Substantial evidence supports the involvement of the human medial temporal lobe (MTL) in episodic memory. Although differential roles have been attributed to left and right MTL in mediating verbal and visual memory, few studies have directly shown a clear material-specific dissociation. This issue becomes particularly relevant in the pre-operative evaluation of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients with hippocampal sclerosis (HS). Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare the neural correlates of verbal and visual episodic memory during both encoding and recognition tasks, in a group of normal subjects and in TLE patients with unilateral right and left HS. Abstract words and line drawings designed so as to separate the verbal and visual components of the material were used [Jones-Gotman, 1997]. Statistical analysis for the control group shows a left-lateralized pattern of activation, including the left anterior hippocampus and the left parahippocampus, for the verbal material. Activity during visual encoding was largely bilateral and included the right posterior hippocampus and both parahippocampi. Results in patients suggest greater MTL activity on the side contralateral to the lesion. These results are consistent with data from neuropsychological tests using the same material. The relative unimpairment of right TLE patients on the visual memory task could be explained by the posterior location of right hippocampal activation relative to the more anterior lesion site. This is in contrast with the impairment of left TLE patients on the verbal memory task, which involves the anterior portion of the left hippocampus. In conclusion, this study supports material-dependent regional dissociations of MTL function which may help explain neuropsychological findings in patients with MTL damage.

Retrieval of abstract line drawings modulates activity in retinotopic visual areas
Publication year: 2005

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Growing evidence suggests that brain regions that process incoming sensory information can also be involved in the subsequent retrieval of that information from memory. Recent neuro-imaging studies have shown content-specific retrieval activity, corroborating this hypothesis. Mental-imagery experiments have also found that activation patterns are material-dependent. In particular, activation of primary visual cortex (V1) has been reported for visual-imagery tasks requiring examination of fine spatial features. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the episodic encoding and subsequent retrieval of a set of line drawings and a set of words. The line drawings were composed of simple shapes with a complex abstract configuration and episodic encoding was achieved by asking subjects to perform angle comparisons. Group statistical analysis revealed stimulus-related and task-related activity in occipito temporal and parietal areas, which were used to functionally define regions of interest (ROIs). Contrast between activations induced by old versus new items during retrieval was found to be significant in areas within these ROIs, including retinotopic visual cortex extending as early as V1. No such modulation could be observed during retrieval of words. These results support the hypothesis of reinstatement upon retrieval of the perceptual activity engaged during episodic encoding. Most notably, they seem to suggest involvement of retinotopic visual areas during retrieval of line drawings, possibly because these cannot easily be categorised as objects and therefore require examination of fine spatial features. This observation is consistent with findings from visual-imagery experiments. Further studies with fine mapping of retinotopic and non-retinotopic areas should clarify the content specificity of the observed modulations. [Supported by FCT-POCTI/NSE/46438/2002]

fMRI and photo emission study of presentiment: The role of "coherence" in retrocausal processes
Publication year: 2008

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The rationale behind this experiment is that presentiment is supposed to be explained as an example of
time-symmetry in physics. In physics, time symmetry generally is not observed, but theoretical considerations suggest that the breaking of time-symmetry is due to the asymmetry in the availability of coherent multi particle transmitters, such as lasers, and coherent multi particle absorbers.
Time symmetry might therefore occur when the brain state is extremely coherent. Meditation is thought to be a practice resulting in such coherent brain states. Therefore our main hypothesis is that meditators show larger presentiment effects. Presentiment effects are measured by comparing the brain activity before emotional stimuli with the brain activity before neutral stimuli. Because these stimuli are presented randomly and the subject cannot know which type of stimulus will be presented there should be no difference.
In order to evaluate this hypothesis we cannot use a whole brain analysis but should focus on certain regions in order to reduce the otherwise required corrections for multiple analysis. The strategy we used was to establish which brain regions do behave differently in control subjects and meditators when stimuli are presented irrespective of the type of stimulus. So in assessing these brain regions for possible presentiment we do NOT select on the basis of later differential behaviour between emotional and neutral stimuli because such a selection would basically result in spurious results as the signals before and after the stimulus are correlated.
Eight experienced meditators were trained to meditate in the hostile environment of brain scanner. There they were presented with, in total, 64 random neutral, erotic and violent visual stimuli during meditation in the scanner. In a separate session they were presented similar stimuli during the resting state. The resting state measurements were also compared to data obtained from 8 control subjects.
First we analyzed the ‘normal’ i.e. causal effects of the stimuli on the brain activity as measured by Bold-levels in the brain.
In total we found 36 brain regions that showed significant contrast between the session when the meditators were meditating and when they were not meditating and comparing the control subjects in rest with the meditator in rest.
Substantial effects of meditation on brain processing of different emotional visual stimuli were found in several brain regions. The relatively largest direct effects of meditation concerned Brodmann areas 18 and 19 in the Lingual Gyrus. Long term effects of meditation, inferred from the contrast between meditators in rest with control-subjects in rest, were only found in brain regions that have been shown to be involved in attention. For the evaluation of the hypothesis concerning presentiment we focused on the analysis of the anticipatory brain signals preceding neutral and emotional visual stimuli in the 36 regions of interest. In previous work with unselected subjects it was found that these anticipatory signals are dependent on the type of the future stimulus, in spite of the fact that at the time the signals are recorded the future stimulus is completely unknown and will be selected randomly. The semi-qualitative analyses of the current results show that indeed this presentiment effect could be replicated in the brain scanner with control subjects. Experienced meditators showed stronger presentiment especially when they were meditating. The effect of meditation was quite clearly that the ‘retrocausal’ effect of violent stimuli was reduced resulting in a relative larger contribution of erotic presentiment. However, stronger conclusions, also with respect to spatial distribution of the effect, can only be drawn after full quantitative evaluation, which currently is in process.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
INTRODUCTION:
It is a well established observation that plane inversion causes deterioration of performance in face discrimination tasks – the so-called face inversion effect (FIE). This phenomenon suggests that the human visual system contains specialized processing mechanisms that are more engaged by upright faces than by inverted faces or non-face objects. One prominent hypothesis proposes that such specialization results from
extensive practice with upright faces, leading to expertise for this canonical orientation. Here, we aimed to investigate perceptual learning for faces presented in multiple orientations, by conducting both psychophysics and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments.
METHODS:
We conducted two psychophysics experiments in which participants performed a same / different discrimination task (DT) on pairs of faces: for orientations ranging between 0 and 300° over one session (Experiment 1) and for a single orientation over four training sessions (Experiment 2). We then conducted an fMRI experiment to investigate the neural correlates of face perception at multiple orientations.
RESULTS:
A quadratic effect was observed across orientations for both reaction times and error rates, indicating a deterioration of performance away from 0° and towards 180°. In Experiment 2, we observed a main effect of session, indicating that participants became significantly faster and more accurate with training. Finally, when tested with a different orientation (240°) at the end of the last session, participants showed a similar
performance compared with the trained orientation (120°), suggesting that transfer of learning across orientations took place.
CONCLUSIONS:
In summary, we have showed a consistent effect of face orientation in both behavioural and neuroimaging results. Specifically, we found that participants gave more errors and were slower in their responses as faces were rotated away from 0º. In addition, performance was improved when participants underwent periods of training, both for trained and untrained orientations. Consistently with the expertise hypothesis, we also
found a parametric modulation of fMRI activity in specialized visual brain areas, according to the quadratic behavioural effect of face orientation.

The neural basis of intuitive and counterintuitive moral judgment

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Neuroimaging studies on moral decision-making have thus far largely focused on differences between moral judgments with opposing utilitarian (well-being maximizing) and deontological (duty-based) content. However, these studies have investigated moral dilemmas involving extreme situations, and did not control for two distinct dimensions of moral judgment: whether or not it is intuitive (immediately compelling to most people) and whether it is utilitarian or deontological in content. By contrasting dilemmas where utilitarian judgments are counterintuitive with dilemmas in which they are intuitive, we were able to use functional magnetic resonance imaging to identify the neural correlates of intuitive and counterintuitive judgments across a range of moral situations. Irrespective of content (utilitarian/deontological), counterintuitive moral judgments were associated with greater difficulty and with activation in the rostral anterior cingulate cortex, suggesting that such judgments may involve emotional conflict; intuitive judgments were linked to activation in the visual and premotor cortex. In addition, we obtained evidence that neural differences in moral judgment in such dilemmas are largely due to whether they are intuitive and not, as previously assumed, to differences between utilitarian and deontological judgments. Our findings therefore do not support theories that have generally associated utilitarian and deontological judgments with distinct neural systems.

Veränderungen der Plastizität im Gehirn unter Hypnose
Publication year: 2010
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
The search for the neural correlates that characterize
hypnosis is a topic of great interest in neurosciences. As a main aim of the present investigations
we tried to investigate whether suggestions of a subjective experience induced by hypnosis
are in fact accompanied by corresponding neuronal changes in the brain. Methods: We
analysed brain activity in hypnosis using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI),
positron emission tomography (PET) and electroencephalography (EEG). Results: The brain
reacts to suggestions under hypnosis differently compared to instructions without hypnosis.
Using fMRI, functional changes in effective connectivity were observed in a visual illusion
condition. When a grey chart was presented in hypnosis and subjects were asked to perceive
it in colours, both the right fusiform gyrus and the ACC were found to receive bilateral input
from intraparietal sulcus. Learning of high-imagery words in hypnosis was associated with (i)
more pronounced bilateral activation in the occipital cortex and prefrontal areas (PET) and
(ii) an improved memory performance. In an EEG study the neurophysiological correlates of
a motor suggestion in hypnosis were systematically analysed. During arm levitation, significant changes in EEG activity were observed which were most pronounced in sensory motor
areas. The suggested movement was perceived as being external. Different activity patterns
occurred in deep hypnosis as compared to light hypnosis. Findings were specific to hypnosis
and differed from the neuronal correlates of a meditative trance. Conclusions: Hypnotic suggestions
and illusions increase the experience of reality and correlate with specific brain
activation patterns. Visual and motor illusions resulted in an enhanced neuronal response in
brain areas that play a crucial role in perception and/or motor processing.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
We tried to bridge the gap between the two main study types concerning meditation by conducting a longitudinal study on meditation training with different types of assessment strategies including brain imaging techniques (fMRI) using the paradigm of "binocular rivalry" by testing the effects of attentional training on the switching rate during several measures. Eighteen healthy right-handed volunteers (5 males, 13 females, ages 20-57, M = 32.8) participated in the first (baseline; t0) measures. After the first measures and after participating in the meditation training for a few times eleven participants left the study and were not available for further measures. Seven participants (1 male, 6 females, ages 20-57, M = 37.2) remained in the study and took part in all the subsequent measures (t1, t2, t3). Behavioural measurements indicate that the ability to focus on the desired percept while suppressing the undesired one improved during the course of the meditation training. We found clear cut effects after six months of training in all participants concerning their attentional abilities (“attending to the stimulus“ vs. "passively viewing“), differences were observed and characterized by activations in the left and right superior frontal and middle gyrus, suggesting an enhanced capacity for selective attention. No clear cut effects were found concerning our hypotheses about binocular rivalry. On a single-subject level remarkable changes were found in some subjects concerning mindfulness, well-being, clarity to and repair of their own feelings and also in the ability to improve in the paradigm of binocular rivalry.

Plasticity changes in the brain in hypnosis and meditation
Publication year: 2009
URL:
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ch.386/abstract
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Neuroscientific evidence interprets both hypnotic trance induction and different meditation traditions as modified states of consciousness that emphasize attention, concentration and the letting go of thoughts, but they differ in terms of sensory input, processing, memory, and the sense of time. Furthermore, hypnosis is based on the suggestibility of a person and meditation on mindfulness; therefore it is not surprising to find differential brain plasticity changes. We analysed shared and non-shared neural substrates using electroencephalography (EEG), positron emission tomography (PET), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Most pronounced EEG changes were in deep as compared to light hypnosis (step-by-step induction) and in arm levitation where suggested movement was perceived as external. In a within-subject-design changes in brain activity during hypnosis and Tibetan Buddhist meditation were compared. High amplitudes in alpha frequency bands were most pronounced with meditation at frontal positions and with hypnosis in central and temporal locations. Significantly greater activity in theta 2 band was observed only with hypnosis in both hemispheres. PET cerebral activation patterns of imagery-mediated learning were analysed in hypnosis in a within-subject-design. Compared with baseline the learning of high-imagery words was associated with (i) more pronounced bilateral activation in the occipital cortex and prefrontal areas and (ii) improved memory performance. Visual illusion in hypnosis was studied with fMRI, analysed with Granger Causality Mapping, showing changes in the effective connectivity relations of fusiform gyrus, anterior cingulate cortex and intraparietal sulcus. Little is known about the neurobiological basis of the process of enhancing cognitive and emotional traits in meditation. In a longitudinal fMRI study attention abilities through intensive Soto-Zen meditation were investigated before (baseline), after training (6 months) and at follow-up (9 months). After six months differences were observed in the left inferior and left superior frontal gyrus; after 9 months activations in the left precuneus. Taken together, the findings advance understanding of the neural mechanisms that underlie hypnosis and meditation. Further studies with a greater sample size are needed to explore the differences and commonalities of hypnosis and different meditation techniques.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The main objectives of this work were to test if it was possible to conciliate Virtual Reality techniques with the recording of neurophysiological data, and to develop and validate new methodological paradigms to study the psychobiology of emotion.
The first study consisted in selecting 3D stimuli similar to those used in the traditional methodological approach to study emotion. We selected 131 stimuli, which were normalized and validated using the Self-Assessment Manikin, in a sample of 214 healthy subjects. The results obtained were consistent with previous studies conducted with 2D stimuli, allowing the development of a Database of Affective 3D Pictures.
In the second study, we tested if the induction of emotions with 3D stimulation techniques caused more intense emotional responses than with 2D techniques. To that end we recorded behavioral and peripheral physiological measures associated with the visualization of the three Scenarios in two modalities (2D vs.3D).
Results suggested that 3D visualization causes more intense emotional responses.
The third study aimed at testing the interference of emotional information in the neurocognitive processing, through Event-related Potential analysis in a dual-task auditory oddball paradigm. Our results showed that emotional induction through 3D stimulation recruits more attentional resources than through 2D stimulation, causing a greater interference in the cognitive processing.
Finally, in the fourth study, we presented indexes of brain activation obtained through Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) when subjects were exposed to the Scenarios in two modalities (2D vs. 3D). Results indicate that 3D visualization is associated to higher activation of the amygdala complex.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
This study evaluated 54 first psychotic episode patients and 46 healthy controls, using multimodal imaging (structural and functional), to identify the neuroanatomical and functional correlates of neurological performance.
Patients showed more neurological signs than controls. There were no significant differences in grey and white matter volumes between patients and controls, although patients had larger, at trend-level, CSF volumes. Global brain volumes were not correlated with performance at any of the neurological subscales.
Preliminary analysis of white matter tracts in patients showed that a worse performance in Primary signs, reflecting more “hard” neurological abnormalities, was associated with disruption of tracts integrity, and specifically with: increased Fractional Anisotropy (FA) of the Corpus Callosum, both Uncinate fasciculi, right Inferior Fronto-Occipital fasciculus (IFOF); left Inferior Longitudinal fasciculus (ILF). A worse performance on Motor Sequencing was associated with a shorter length of the right IFOF, and a worse performance in Sensory Integration was correlated with a reduction in right Mean Diffusivity of this fasciculus.
An Audio-Visual task was successfully developed to investigate sensory integration during functional MRI. Patients had longer reaction time, and gave more incorrect answers, and had larger frontal lobe activation than healthy controls, particularly so if they had a poorer response to treatment.
In conclusion, morpho-anatomical information alone are not sufficient to define the substrate of neurological dysfunction in psychosis, which is likely to reflect an altered structural, and possibly functional connectivity.

Psychosis, neurological soft signs and their meaning
Publication year: 2009

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES:
An excess of neurological signs is present in psychosis, particularly in primary and motor coordination signs. It remains unclear whether these signs progress over the course of the illness, and it has never been investigated whether any progression is associated with changes in brain structure.
METHODS:
We evaluated 49 individuals (mean age 27 years +-8; 59% males; 45% DSM IV schizophrenia) at the time of the first psychotic episode and 6 years later. We investigated neurological function using the Neurological Evaluation Scale, and grey matter volume using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, with a 1.5 T GE scanner. We estimated grey matter volume with automated segmentation methods.
RESULTS:
Rates of primary and motor coordination signs remained stable over the follow up period, as did motor sequencing signs. In contrast, sensory integration signs increased over the follow up period (p=0.007).
Higher rates of primary signs (at baseline) and higher rates of motor coordination signs (at follow up) were correlated with more grey matter loss over follow up (p=0.05 and p=0.072 respectively).
CONCLUSIONS:
Primary and motor coordination deficits may represent trait markers of psychosis and their presence may be predictive of a more progressive illness course. Further work will investigate whether these signs are also associated with regional brain changes.

BIAL Foundation Archive
Start date: 1994
History:
The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Introduction: An excess of neurological signs is present in psychosis, particularly in primary and motor coordination signs. It remains unclear whether these signs progress over the course of the illness, and it has never been investigated whether any progression is associated with changes in brain structure. Methods: We evaluated 49 individuals (mean age 27 years 68; 59% males; 45% DSM IV schizophrenia) at the time of the first psychotic episode and 6 years later. We investigated neurological function using the Neurological Evaluation Scale, and grey matter volume using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, with a 1.5 T GE scanner. We estimated grey matter volume with automated segmentation methods. Results: Rates of primary and motor coordination signs remained stable over the follow up period, as did motor sequencing signs. In contrast, sensory integration signs increased over the follow up period (P = .007). Higher rates of primary signs (at baseline) and higher rates of motor coordination signs (at follow up) were correlated with more grey matter loss over follow up (P = .05 and P = .07 respectively). Conclusions: Primary and motor coordination deficits
may represent trait markers of psychosis and their presence may be predictive of a more progressive illness course. Further work will investigate whether these signs are also associated with regional brain changes.
