A network analysis of self-reported sleep bruxism in the Netherlands sleep registry: its associations with insomnia and several demographic, psychological, and life-style factors
Publication year: 2022
URL:

Abstract/Results: Objectives
To investigate the association between self-reported sleep bruxism and insomnia and their potential risk factors (eg, depression and anxiety), and to construct a network model with all these factors.
Methods
We recruited 2251 participants from the Netherlands Sleep Registry. All participants completed questionnaires on self-reported sleep bruxism, insomnia, depression, anxiety, smoking frequency, and alcohol and caffeine consumption. The associations between self-reported sleep bruxism and other variables were analyzed by univariate analysis, multivariate logistic regression, and network analysis.
Results
Although univariate analysis showed that there was a positive association between sleep bruxism and insomnia (P < 0.001), this association disappeared in the multivariate logistic regression model (P = 0.258). However, multivariate logistic regression did show an association between self-reported sleep bruxism and anxiety (OR = 1.087, 95% CI 1.041–1.134). The network model showed that there was no direct link between self-reported sleep bruxism and insomnia. However, there was an indirect link between self-reported sleep bruxism and insomnia via anxiety.
Conclusions
Although self-reported sleep bruxism has no direct association with insomnia, anxiety is a bridging factor between these variables.

Abstract/Results: Abstract
By assessing interrelationships among variables within a specified theoretical framework, network analysis (NA) provides nuanced insights into how associations between psychological constructs are related to outcome measures. Noting this, the authors used NA to examine connections between Paranormal Belief, cognitive-perceptual factors (Schizotypy, Transliminality, and Manic-Depressive Experience), and well-being (Life Satisfaction, Meaning in Life, Somatic Complaints, Perceived Stress, Depressive Symptoms). Data derived from a sample of 3,090 participants (mean age = 50.30, standard deviation = 15.20; 46.5% male, 53.1% female) who completed standardised self-report measures capturing the study constructs online. Transliminality, Unusual Experiences (positive schizotypy), and Depressive Experience demonstrated high expected influence centrality. This indicated that these factors were the most strongly connected and influential in the network. Moreover, Transliminality was a connecting variable between Paranormal Belief, positive schizotypy, and psychopathology. Depressive Experience bridged the relationship between Transliminality and well-being. The conceptual implications of these outcomes are discussed with regards to better understanding relationships between Paranormal Belief, cognitive-perceptual factors, and well-being.

Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Good sleep is pivotal for our daytime functioning and mood. By understanding the psychophysiological mechanisms underlying this link, we can promote well-being and resilience through good sleep. While hundreds of variables across psychological, psychophysiological, and brain imaging modalities have shown to influence the link between sleep and mood, their influence may be indirect. We must thus go beyond these individual associations and integrate modalities.
AIMS
We aim to understand the multivariate landscape of factors that influence the link between sleep quality and well-being by developing and estimating cross-modal network models.
METHOD
First, we review network approaches across modalities, based on which propose ways forward to integrate these levels. Second, we apply these methods to (i) integrate psychophysiological and psychological measures; (ii) investigate propagation of interventions through the network by including behavioral and cognitive process measures; and (iii) link mood to individual affect trajectories over time.
RESULTS
We introduced three methods to integrate modalities using network analysis: multilayer networks, integrated networks, and network-based regressors. Using integrated networks, we could reveal that (i) anxiety is a potential bridging-factor between sleep bruxism and sleep problems; (ii) different cognitive and behavioral elements of a system can be targeted using various interventions; and (iii) characteristics of the individual networks comprising mood and affect predicted longer-term outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS
Concertedly, these studies show that understanding the pathways through the complex system of sleep quality and mood may offer new ways to facilitate well-being.

Scaling crowdsourcing interventions to combat partisan misinformation

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Partisan misinformation undermines people’s ability to make decisions based on accurate information, posing a threat to democracy and liberal values. Current interventions to counter misinformation are less effective when it comes to politically polarizing content, especially among extreme partisans who share the most misinformation. A new line of research suggests that crowdsourcing interventions, or using laypeople's judgments to help peoplespot misinformation, provide an additional layer of content moderation that can help overcome these limitations. We present a model that explains when crowdsourcing interventions will be successful based on three factors: trust in fact-checking sources, dissonance with previous beliefs, and crowd size. These three factors are often at odds in politically polarized social media environments, where more trusted sources may be less willing to provide dissonant opinions, resulting in smaller fact-checking crowds. Based on this model, we discuss how crowdsourcing interventions could be scaled in a way that is ethical and leverages network analysis methods to connect people with neighboring communities outside their ideological echo chambers. Finally, we propose venues for future research in the field
of crowdsourcing interventions that lie at the intersection between individual-level and system-level solutions to partisan misinformation.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Increased psychological flexibility (PF) may underlie the lasting positive effects of psychedelic experiences on mental well-being. The associations between different components of PF, psychological inflexibility (PI), and well-being with psychedelic use are not well understood. We conducted a cross-sectional internet survey of participants (N = 629) with experience of classical psychedelics. Using network analysis, we examined how aspects of a single psychedelic experience (mystical-type features and psychological insights) and the frequency of past psychedelic use, were associated with current PF and PI components, as well as with mental well-being and ill-being. Mediation analyses explored whether PF mediated the relationship between past psychedelic use and well-being or ill-being. The network analysis linked psychological insight to the PF component Acceptance, with no association found between the frequency of past use and PF. Mediation analyses showed PF mediates the association between past psychedelic use and well-being and ill-being. These results suggest that the quality and depth of the psychedelic experience, rather than the frequency of use, are primarily linked to psychological flexibility, particularly Acceptance, and overall well-being. This underscores the importance of treating PF as a multidimensional construct to better understand the long-term mental health benefits of psychedelics.
