Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The first study (Stevens, 1997) looked at conscious responses to changes in 50 T magnetic fields (MF) at frequencies below 40 Hz, but found they did not appear to correlate with the field's presence. Feedback training attempts to improve accuracy were also unsuccessful. However, skin conductance (SC) levels showed an overall increase when any of the MFs were present. There were also suggestive trends indicating that the magnitude of MF-related SC increases was positively correlated to Field Dependency and success at rule-based pattern matching and negatively correlated to reports of previous ESP or PK experiences.
The second study (Stevens, 2001) investigated the idea that the emotion associated with visual stimuli would be altered during concurrent exposure to a MF (50 T, 20 Hz). Although in the predicted direction, neither SC nor arousal ratings showed statistically significant changes. The affective content rating did show a significant difference (p = 0.041), with images viewed under MF exposure having a more positive affect rating. Post-hoc analysis also showed individual differences in subjects' SC profiles, with 48% showing lower SC during MF exposure 34% showing no apparent reaction, and 17% shwoing an increased SC. Overall ratings given by each of the groups appeared to relate to these profiles.
Finally, data was also used in a third study (Stevens, 2000) which found an overall scale-invariant pattern in DMILS data that was comparable to that seen in the MF exposure data, possibly indicating similarities between DMILS and magnetic response mechanisms.

This study investigated the effect of a weak magnetic field (50?µT, 20?Hz sinusoidal, 5?s duration) on concurrent perceptions of visual stimuli. Subjects were seated between Helmholtz coils and gave post-exposure ratings for the affective content and arousing nature of presented images. They were blind as to the presence or absence of a simultaneously presented field. Skin conductance and arousal ratings did not show significant differences between experimental and control conditions, but the affective content rating did (P?=?0.041), with the images viewed under field exposure being rated as having a more positive affect. Such measures might thus be useful as additional indicators of magnetic field detection. A post-hoc analysis of skin conductance profiles showed that 48% of subjects exhibited a lowering of skin conductance during field exposure, 34% exhibited no apparent reaction, and 17% exhibited an increase. Overall ratings given by each of the groups appeared to relate to these physiological profiles.

Hampton Court Palace is reputed to be one of the most haunted places in England, with both staff and visitors reporting unusual phenomena in many areas of the building. This investigation aimed to discover the extent to which these reports were related to 3 variables: belief in ghosts, suggestion, and magnetic fields. Participants (N = 678) completed questionnaires measuring belief in ghosts, previously experienced unusual phenomena and whether they attributed these phenomena to ghosts. Believers reported significantly more unusual phenomena than disbelievers and were significantly more likely to attribute the phenomena to ghosts. Participants then walked around an allegedly haunted area of die Palace and reported unusual phenomena they experienced. Believers reported sinificantly more anomalous experiences than disbelievers and were significantly more likely to attribute these to a ghost. Prior to visiting the locations, half of the participants were told that the area was associated with a recent increase in unusual phenomena, whereas the other half were told the opposite. In line with previous work, the number of unusual experiences reported by participants showed a significant interaction between belief in ghosts-and these suggestions. Results indicated a possible relationship between the locations in which participants reported their experiences and local magnetic fields.

In cases of alleged hauntings, a large number of seemingly trustworthy witnesses consistently report experiencing unusual phenomena (e.g. apparitions, sudden changes in temperature, a strong sense of presence) in certain locations. The two studies reported here explored the psychological mechanisms that underlie this apparent evidence of ‘ghostly’ activity. The experiments took place at two locations that have a considerable reputation for being haunted—Hampton Court Palace (Surrey, England) and the South Bridge Vaults (Edinburgh, Scotland). Both studies involved participants walking around these locations and reporting where they experienced unusual phenomena. Results revealed significantly more reports of unusual experiences in areas that had a reputation for being haunted. This effect was not related to participants' prior knowledge about the reputation of these areas. However, the location of participants' experiences correlated significantly with various environmental factors, including, for example, the variance of local magnetic fields and lighting levels. These findings strongly suggest that alleged hauntings may not necessarily represent evidence for ‘ghostly’ activity, but could be, at least in part, the result of people responding to ‘normal’ factors in their surroundings.

The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.

Although not generally recognized, most target systems in psi experiments have some random element (e.g., electronic noise or biological cell-gating). With this in mind, this paper describes ideas and techniques concerning the phenomenon of stochastic resonance, wherein a noisy system is driven by an external signal that should be too weak to effect it. In a typical psi experiment, information can only be gained by observing the target systems output as a time series of events. This output is assumed to relate to a psi mechanism plus noise sources, so analysis looks for patterns that are hidden by the noise. However, with stochastic resonance, a system becomes a more sensitive detector as noise increases, up to an optimal, non-zero level. This could suggest an alternative way of conceptualizing psi studies: rather than trying to remove it, the noise becomes a variable that actively contributes to the output characteristics.
